Favourite Wedding Songs: Building a Definitive List

Favourite Wedding SongsSix years ago, I put together a wedding playlist for my brother's wedding. I shared the wedding playlist in an entry entitled 100 Wedding Songs.

I have renewed interest in updating this list of wedding songs. I'm not a fan of cheesy, poppy wedding songs, but cooler tunes like Pearl Jam's cover of "Throw Your Arms Around Me" and U2's "All I Want Is You".

I'm going to start building this list in this entry, but I need your help. Please leave a comment with cool songs you think would be ideal for a cool Toronto wedding.

No "Last Dance" and the like... not interested. I'd rather hear Radiohead's "True Love Waits".

The living and breathing list of our favourite wedding songs:

  • 311 - Love Song

I don't know about red by treble charger--if you listen to the lyrics, it's not exactly a love song.

For my vote, the wife and I will be using "Crash Into Me" by Dave Matthews Band when we make the wife part official next year.

October 18, 2012 @ 1:49 PM

"Have a little faith in me" by John Hiatt. Like "Have I told you..." it could be about God, or not....

October 18, 2012 @ 1:58 PM

Wouldn't "Nothing compares to you" be better for a divorce ceremony?

October 18, 2012 @ 2:08 PM

And as for an add, what about "it's all your fault" by alanis?

October 18, 2012 @ 2:09 PM

Van Morrison - Into the Mystic

October 18, 2012 @ 2:13 PM

Mike Kic

Bill Withers - Lovely Day

When I got married I was very clear with the DJ and gave him a list. Not a list of songs to play, but a list of songs not to play.

My first dance song with my wife was another beautiful Radiohead song - Fake Plastic Trees.

That's the Van Morrison song I want! Into the Mystic.... perfect.

Treble Charger's Red is now up for review and Sinead O'Conner's Nothing Compares 2 U has been removed. Great feedback @Mississauga Phil and @Alvin.

Keep the suggestions coming... you'll see the list above will change often thanks to your suggestions and reality checks.

Phil Collin's version of Groovy Kind of Love...It was our wedding song.

The only other big one at our wedding (We used In My Life for the dance with our parents) was the first open dance was done to You'll Never Walk Alone by Gerry and the Pacemakers.

October 18, 2012 @ 3:27 PM

what about...

"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" Elvis Costello

"Lips Like Sugar" Echo & the Bunnymen

"Ice Cream" Sarah McLachlan

U2 "All I Want Is You" was our first dance song! love love love that song

October 18, 2012 @ 3:31 PM

Mississauga Phil

Upon careful review of your list, I have to call out Interstate Love Song as well.

I am a huge STP fan, but the only thing about this tune that make it a love song is the name...we used to cover this song extensivly and I can sing it in my sleep...not one of the lyrics are even remotley greamine to a wedding...

October 18, 2012 @ 3:36 PM

Mississauga Phil

That should have said Germaine...sorry

October 18, 2012 @ 3:37 PM

Power of Love - Frankie Goes to Hollywood

October 18, 2012 @ 3:37 PM

Mississauga Phil

What about Wonderful Tonight by Clapton...great wedding song, but only if the lady in question is Blonde I suppose

October 18, 2012 @ 3:38 PM

Love, Reign O'er Me - Pearl Jam or the Who

Not the Huey Lewis and the News version?

October 18, 2012 @ 3:57 PM

Huey Lewis? Hahaha...think I'd take the Jennifer Rush version over that one

October 18, 2012 @ 4:13 PM

Jason C

We played "Thinking Out Loud" by Ron Sexsmith as our first song.

October 18, 2012 @ 4:15 PM

Dude There She Goes is about heroin use

October 18, 2012 @ 4:32 PM

My wedding song was AC DC - Lets Get It Up. It was perfect. I was tired of being a John and she was tired of being a high priced escort. Lucky my Harley had a back seat.

October 18, 2012 @ 4:38 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I always thought There She Goes was about a girl being like heroin.

I've removed it pending a thorough review.

October 18, 2012 @ 4:39 PM

Play the Pet Shop Boys version of Always on My Mind, so awesome and better for dancing. Love Willy but you have enough mopey songs.

October 18, 2012 @ 4:52 PM

Wiccapedia (hey its near halloween) is inconclusive. One band member wasnt sure. Another says no way.

Buckcherry - Crazy bitch is another song to add. I considered it at my wedding but my wife like AC DC better

"The moon is rising and so am I"

October 18, 2012 @ 4:56 PM

Mike....why do I always have to remind you about David Gray - This Year's Love?
Congratulations by the way.....wishing you and your lady many years of Love & Joy.

October 18, 2012 @ 5:35 PM

Our wedding song was A Song For You by Leon Russell.

October 18, 2012 @ 6:56 PM

As someone who DJ'd wedding in high school and university to pay for said university I have hundreds and hundreds of 'wedding' songs to play and not play... the latter being the most important.

My own wedding went like this:
First dance - Alphaville: Forever Young (the good version. not that shitty fast one)
Last dance - Frankie Goes to Hollywood - The Power of Love

Congrats Mike... let me know if you need a German polka version of The Bird Dance... I got one!!!

October 18, 2012 @ 7:57 PM

"Closer" by Nine Inch Nails pretty well sums up the wedding night.

As the marriage goes on, "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (NIN cover).

October 18, 2012 @ 7:59 PM

@ Andrew

Your 1st song was my 2nd - Forever Young

October 18, 2012 @ 8:01 PM

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I feel like I'm Cheryl.

I've never been to a wedding that didn't have "Old Time Rock'N Roll" by Bob Seger played at some point.
It always gets the baby boomers dancing with their white man's overbite.

October 18, 2012 @ 8:02 PM

You and Me Together by DMB would be awesome.

Back in the day (almost 25 years!), hubby and I danced to Armstrong's What a Wonderful World.

The folks would have had a heart attack with Crazy Bitch.

October 18, 2012 @ 8:04 PM

Stevie Wonder – I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever): my 'first dance' song.

October 18, 2012 @ 9:01 PM

@ Dale

Glad you played the good version!! It was always my favourite to play for other couples, although I'm a bit biased.

I hated doing weddings by the end. I would quote outrageous rates and people would sign up because it was so hard to find someone.

October 18, 2012 @ 10:08 PM

311 - Love song

October 18, 2012 @ 10:51 PM

I guess 'Highway To Hell' isn't appropriate. How about you shook me all night long for the morning after?

October 18, 2012 @ 10:52 PM

It's funny, but I had that song on the original list for Steve's wedding. Not even sure why I cut it...

Genesis's Follow You Follow Me has always been a fave of mine.
Good Luck Mike, you have a lot of work ahead of you.

October 19, 2012 @ 6:26 AM

ACDC "Shook Me All Night Long"
The Darkness "I Believe in a Thing Called Love"

Synically speaking, if this is a second, third (or beyond) marriage CSNY's "Love the One You're With."

October 19, 2012 @ 7:46 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ J9 - You and Me Together is a great wedding song as well....one of my favorite tunes off that album.

October 19, 2012 @ 8:37 AM

519 Rob

WOW...lots of great songs so far.
The one that I have always had in mind for my wedding (not likely at this point, but I digress...), is I Can't Take My Eyes Off You, by Melanie Doane.

October 19, 2012 @ 9:35 AM

Everly Brothers- Let it be Me

Bob Dylan- Lay Lady Lay

October 19, 2012 @ 9:44 AM

@ 519 Rob

That is a great song selection. Not only that, her first album is a classic Canadian album in my mind. I can listen to it over and over. Just a great, fantastic album.

Highly recommended!

October 19, 2012 @ 10:38 AM

Man... I need to wake up before I post. That's me above.. not @519 Rob...

dumbass -->> = ME

October 19, 2012 @ 10:39 AM

INXS - "Mystify"

October 19, 2012 @ 11:24 AM

@Mike - Only the original Hunters & Collectors version of "Throw Your Arms Around Me" qualifies. The original is powerful - especially live versions.

October 19, 2012 @ 11:25 AM

Bright Eyes- First Day of My Life

Coldplay- Till Kingdom Come

Mumford- Lover of the Light

Matthew Barber- You and Me

October 19, 2012 @ 12:55 PM

Also, City and Colour- The Girl
Harry Connick Jr.- We are in Love (we danced down the aisle to that one, but you wouldn't know since you were late to our wedding!)

Google Maps is the reason I was late to your wedding. It started sending me to Paris, Ontario.

THE REAL 519 Rob

@ Andrew
No worries.
Glad you liked the song choice. And I agree, it is a classic.

October 19, 2012 @ 3:55 PM

519 Rob

@Tor Mike
I'm not sure that you've addressed this, but why are you getting married now? You've obviously been with your better-half for some time now.
I'm (honestly) not trying to start shit, I'm just really curious.
I've been with my 'wife' for 13 years. Not married. At this point I see no real reason to do it.

October 19, 2012 @ 3:58 PM

Turning Page by Sleeping At Last

October 19, 2012 @ 4:33 PM

@Douglas that song is AMAZING. I used to be OBSESSED with it.

@TO Mike Also very romantic: Chantal Kreviazuk "Baby Before You" & The Cure "Just Like Heaven."

I see you haven't added my other suggestions to your master list yet. That's cool, I know you are busy.

October 19, 2012 @ 4:44 PM

All suggestions will be considered and some will be added to the master list.

Fake Cheryl

You are right. Bob Seger is the greatest singer of our time. That is why Oldtime Rock and Roll is played at all wedding receptions.

Weddings are stupid. People spend too much money on one day. People get too emotional. Wedding gifts cost too much money. I hate weddings. I am glad my trainer never married. If he did get married I would have had to go to a stupid wedding.
I would get married but Grocery Gateway doesn't do catering. If they did, they would probably screw it up though. That's why I'll never get married.

I think that Night Moves or Like A Rock would be the greatest wedding songs of all time.

October 19, 2012 @ 4:48 PM

Hooked on a feeling by Blue Swede

October 19, 2012 @ 5:23 PM

@TO Mike one last suggestion for after you are pronounced husband & wife:

(or perhaps that will be more appropriate for later in evening)

October 19, 2012 @ 5:24 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Just heard that song recently... and not from Reservoir Dogs.

I'm adding Pussy be Yankin by Lady right now.

October 19, 2012 @ 5:27 PM

@Rosie - which one?

October 19, 2012 @ 6:38 PM

@Douglas Mystify... 'All those stars that shine upon you, will kiss you every night' soooo romantic!

October 19, 2012 @ 9:08 PM

Rick C in Oakville

@Jill and Mike You must have heard it on H&F the other day. That was effing funny, 2 old guys with short term memory loss trying to remember the song . I have those episodes at least 5 times a day.LOL

October 19, 2012 @ 9:50 PM

Irvne (but not really)

Fact People - weddings are just another social confomaty that the world tells you you need to sub---blah blah blah.....(enter a stock Irv comment about life in Vancouver here) blah blah blah...i ahve a tatoo...blah blahblah i pay more in taxes than you make in a year.....

October 20, 2012 @ 1:51 PM

Led Zepplin - Thank You

October 20, 2012 @ 3:53 PM

@Irvne (but not really)

Wow slick, did you even read my posts before you set out with your futile attempt at a flame war?

Had you read what I wrote, I explained that I had married my high priced escort. I was tired of being a john and she wanted out the industry. A sort of two birds with one stone thing.

After we said our nuptials, the Church cranked up the song. She got on the back of my Harley (Softail Classic 2009) and we rode off to the hotel (Budget Patricia on East Hastings).

Later that night, we ordered in some pizza from Panago Vancouver while I calculated how much my income taxes would go up because I could no longer write her off as a business expense (I had to get in Vancouver & mention of my taxes).

October 20, 2012 @ 5:49 PM

OMFG Mike. You forgot THE wedding song.

Vanessa Williams - Best for Last

October 20, 2012 @ 6:42 PM

Our first dance was the Candlelight mix of Dj Sammy's heaven, and the cake cutting was to the fast version.

October 21, 2012 @ 8:22 PM

Willy Deville - Storybook Love (theme from the Princess Bride). I love this song.

October 21, 2012 @ 8:40 PM

Irvine (but not really)

No attempt at a flame war...just a little troll work :)

October 22, 2012 @ 10:31 AM

You're right, I missed #4.

October 22, 2012 @ 10:44 AM

music fan

I dunno about The One I Love. Huge REM fan, but..."this one goes out to the one I've left behind. A simple prop to occupy my time."

How about Chicago's "Will You Still Love Me"?
