Civic Holiday Long Weekend Open Mike

Open MikeOr do we call is Simcoe Day? I'm pretty sure it's not a Civic holiday as much as it's Simcoe Day around these parts. Either way, most of us get Monday off, and that's a good thing.

Write here about anything you want, and if you have a question, I'll drop by throughout the day to answer you. Anything goes....

No gold medals for Canada.

Just sayin'...

I noticed some charts rank countries by gold medals and others rank countries by total medals.

I choose to look at the latter, although after the Vancouver Olympics, I chose to look at the former.

August 3, 2012 @ 9:42 AM

The IOC needs to invent another sport where only a handful of countries will participate in. Then open it up to women and then give billions of dollars to Quebec so they can develop an athlete or two who can compete in this yet-to-be invented sport.

Once that happens, you'll see a few more medals at the games for Canada.

And that, folks, is our recipe for success at the Olympics. Isn't amateur sport great???

Anyone miss baseball and/or softball at the Olympics?

Starting tomorrow me and a few friends are renting a cottage for a week up near a town called Wilberforce on Esson Lake.

I am going to drink a terrifying amount of beer and sangria.

A select population of three different animal species will make their final journey.

Inert lounging on inflatable watercraft will be the reward of multiple matches of a fantastic game called Washers, while roaring campfires and twisted, politically incorrect comedy will be rampant.

And many years from now, five good friends will reminisce about the week, and realize it was the absolute best of times.

Starting Monday, I'm going to cavort around Amsterdam for a week.

I've never been to Amsterdam. Sounds like a super interesting city.

I miss baseball at the Olympics, too.

The Winter Classic between the Red Wings and the Leafs will have a Russian flavour, thanks to Detroit. Sergei Fedorov, Vyacheslov Fetisov, Igor Larionov and Vladimir Konstantinov. The Leafs will have Russ Courtnall, Bill Derlago, Vincent Damphousse, Dave Ellett, Gary Leeman and Bob McGill.

No offense to the Leafs' alumni, but those Russian names just seem to be so much more enticing.

Isn't it refreshing that there has not been a major doping scandal so far during the games.

@Dave - Those badminton players really acted as dopes...Is it true that Boxing is the only Olympic sport that professionals are not allowed to compete in?

August 3, 2012 @ 2:21 PM

Will Bolt blow away the competition in the 100m?

Will he set a new world record?

How low will it go?

@ryan g: I was up there last year. It's a very nice area. Depending on the route you go, watch out for the tunnel of shoes. (You'll know it if you see it).

By any chance, it wouldn't be this place:

If so, pay extra attention when on Essonville Line. The turn off to their cottage road is nigh unmarked.

Well, Grocery Gateway is getting worse all the time. I'm really tired of their nonsencs. I had a couple out of stock items again plus an item I was supposed to receive, but didn't. Well, I got credit for the item that didn't get delivered. I have no idea why items get listed on my invoice, but I don't get them. If you don't need to use Grocery Gateway, don't use them. They suck. I have no choice. I have to use them. There is no other way for me. Apparently the shoppers shop for the stuff late at night when ete stores close so they have no way of knowing what's in stock. It sucks, I know. Only a couple more months until we get hockey unless there is a strike. They better not go on strike, but they don't care because they make lots of money so they probably have really gigantic savings accounts so they don't have to work. It only means I won't get my hockey.

Not it's not that place but we did consider it as it's a fantastic looking retreat.

Funny you ask about our route.

We're driving in from Toronto and the map they provided says we take "Hwy 12" to start towards Wilberforce..i haven't a clue where Hwy 12 is...yet Mapquest says to take "ON-35" towards Lindsay/Peterborough as a starting point.

Any suggestions on best way to get to Wilberforce?

Sorry to hear about the troubles you're having with Grocery Gateway. I tried them once when they first launched in the late 90s. If I remember correctly, it's Longos that provides the groceries. Maybe you could call someone at their head office and explain your situation and how you rely on the deliveries so.

As for hockey, I'm hoping they're not stupid enough to have another work stoppage. When the World Series was cancelled in 1994 I promised myself never to underestimate the business greed that is professional sports, so nothing would surprise me now.

If there's no labour stoppage, I'm looking forward to another Leafs season. We're no better, and need a lot to go our way between the pipes, but a city dreams of 8th place in the conference are alive and well.

I know you've done this, but thought it would be fun to post the suggested route as per Google Maps.

Summer of the Gun possibly again continues tomorrow with the Caribbean Festival (Caribana) parade as in the past couple of years with shootings. Retribution for Danzig situation.

If going to the parade, wear a flak jacket.

August 3, 2012 @ 6:35 PM

Well, I deal with the head manager of Grocery Gateway. Grocery Gateway is linked with Longos. A long time ago, they were linked with Sobies. They were better years ago because if something was out of stock, it would be listed as out of stock and there would be no way to order it. I keep getting told it will go back to that way again, but it hasn't yet. I need to use them. If I didn't need them, I would drop them in a heartbeat, believe me. Well, I hope the hockey players won't go on strike. I'm looking forward to another Habs and Coyotes season. Now all that is on is boring baseball.

August 3, 2012 @ 6:56 PM

You're rambling on & on.

It's summer, enjoy it with baseball. The problem is that U don't understand the overall sport with offense & defense.
It's the same as hockey.

@Andrew, I hope we are wrong in our assumptions, but sadly it's the first thing that comes to mind now. I went about 10 or 12 years ago with a Trinidadian co worker and his family, and it was a blast. Sadly it gets the bad rap from so few gang bangers. Now I just watch it from the media reports.

August 3, 2012 @ 11:13 PM

Baseball is so boring. It's a boring game and there is no time clock or anything so as long as guys keep on fouling pitches off, it goes on and on and they have to change pitchers lots of times as well. Hockey isn't like that. Anyway, I wish hockey would go all year round. That would be good.

August 4, 2012 @ 9:50 AM

It's the summer & the weather has been hot & humid.

Kids on summer vacation NOBODY outside playing street hockey, football, baseball, tag, riding bikes, chalking on driveways, walking their dogs. What our kids biding their time with now - IPods, gaming it, etc?

Kids, get your ASS's off the couch & do some exercise - only another month until school.

August 4, 2012 @ 9:39 PM

I hope you're commenting from a mobile device while you're outside as you provide inspiration for our younger generation.

Well, kids these days probably are playing with their electronic things. Oh well, if kids are overweight, it's not my problem. I don't have a mobile device so nobody can call my cellphone when I'm out because I don't have one. Primus has cellphones, but I don't want one. I would never switch back to Bell in my life. I can't find anything good to say about Bell now, and if I could get rid of Grocery Gateway, I would get rid of them as well. Maybe one day, some grocery delivery company will start up and then I could switch to it because it would probably be a lot better.

@ Elvis

How come your aren't at the ELVIS festival in Collingwood?

August 6, 2012 @ 1:51 PM

Elvis is a terrible singer. He shakes his voice too much. I like maybe a couple songs by him, but that's it. Bob Seger sings millions of times better than Elvis, and so does John Mellencamp.

August 6, 2012 @ 7:58 PM

@Cheryl, are you high?

August 7, 2012 @ 8:25 AM

No, I'm not high. I don't smoke or do drugs. I happen not to like Elvis. I don't like him. Bob Seger is a beautiful singer. He has a great voice and his slow songs are the best. Okay, there are two songs I like by Elvis, Kentucky Rain and Suspicious Minds. Mind you those songs would be better if someone else sang them.
