ProStars: Cereal and Saturday Morning Cartoon

ProStarsI'm not sure what happened to ProStars cereal, but it was around when I was a kid. General Mills made the cereal and slapped The Great One on the box. Heck, if ProStars was good enough for Wayne Gretzky, it's good enough for me.

Here's an ad for ProStars, courtesy of Retrontario.

I even remember the short-lived ProStars Saturday morning cartoon. It starred Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson and Wayne Gretzky and aired 13 episodes in late 1991. Here's the intro:

Does anyone know what happened to ProStars cereal?

I miss those bad-for-you cereals.

I have a rule with my kids that I won't buy cereal with more than 3 gms of sugar per serving. That eliminates most of the good stuff, including Honey Nut Cheerios. It's fun to watch them reading labels in the grocery store.

The big 4 that are left are Special K, Rice Krispies, Regular Cheerios and Corn Flakes.

@ Mike - I have a slightly differnt rule for my son.

When we go shopping I pick a cereal for him and he picks one for himself. IF he eats all his dinner (veggies included) then he can have a bowl of his cereal the following morning, if not he has mine.

I know many parents who are hordcore NO SUGAR!!! I am of the opinion that you have to let a kid be a kid, in moderation. My son is very active, so I'm not too concerned about his weight. The trade off for the wife and I is that there is no pop in our house, he has had coke/pepsi maybe a half dozen times in his life (I will ocasionally let it slip at a party or when we go out for dinner).

My go-to cereal these days is Special K. In fact, I had a bowl this morning.

I remember Pro Stars. Why did they have to put Gretzky on the box though. They should have put a better player on the box like Guy Lafleur. Guy Lafleur was the best.

At the moment my favourite cereal is Grain Shop.

We were in the grocery store this evening, and I did notice something called Chocolate Cheerios. I didn't read the label, but am betting it's not overly healthy.

Yes, the kids have checked out Chocolate Cheerios. They'd be crazy not to.

But alas, 9 g of sugar per serving, if memory serves correct. Regular Cheerios is only 1 g of sugar per serving.

@ Cheryl - Ok, you've said some off the wall things before, but to say that LaFleur is better than Gretzky, that has to be one of the top five most ridiculous things I've ever heard ni my life.

I am a die-hard Leafs fan, but I would never say that Sittler, or Clark, or Gilmour or Sundin are better than Gretzky. He holds the majority of scoring recods in the NHL, most of his records are NEVER going to be touched. Everyone is entitiled to thier opionion, but Gretzky being the greatest player in the history of the NHL is a FACT!

@ Cheryl & Mississauga Phil.
I am surprised that when ProStars was made that they didn't put a different player on the boxes for the Quebec market. Maybe not LaFleur necessarily.
However, I am with Phil, there is little debate that someone could make to convince me Gretz isn't the greatest of all time.

I believe Wayne Gretzky is the greatest hockey player of all time. Having said that, there are two arguments I will entertain:

1. Bobby Orr - he changed the position and had his career cut short by injury. And blowhards like me never saw him play and therefore can't appreciate him, the way young punks today can't appreciate Michael Jordan.

2. Mario Lemieux - I saw Mario play, and pound-for-pound he might be the best ever. I still think Gretz is the greatest, but I entertain the Mario argument b/c he was that good.

The Guy Lafleur argument is just silly.

@ Mike - I am one of the "young punks" who never saw Orr play. However, I can appreciate the fact that he changed how defense was played in the NHL. As far as Super Mario goes, in my mind he will always be second fiddle to Gretzky, he was an excellent hockey player, but everything about Gretzky was ICONIC. He was so far ahead of anyone else that was playing at the time. I'd even argue that there is no current player in the NHL who could carry the skates of Gretzky in his prime, let alone be conidered in his league. People try to tout Crosby as the next comming of Gretzky, Crosby is a great player, but no one has ever dominated the way Gretzky, when is the last time someone got over 200 pts in a season...Mario sure didn't.

Young punk here too (relative to the conversation).
I have no first hand knowledge of how Orr played, but am willing to agree with what Ive read and seen - he was that damn good.
Lemieux, I know all too well. That iconic goal he scored against The North Stars in the finals STILL haunts me. He single handedly beat The Stars in the playoffs. If there was no Lemieux with The Pens, The North Stars WOULD have won the '91 Cup.
But Gretzky just dominated like no one I've ever seen before. I'm not sure how you'd compare him to other stars in other sports. Maybe Jordan in Basketball...but that's it.

The "young punks" didn't see Jordan play. Lots of us who missed Orr are now old punks.

I think Gretzky is the greatest of all time, so I agree with you. I'm just happy to entertain arguments for Orr and Lemieux. There's nobody else you can argue for...

@ Mike - Yeah, I saw my error after I posted...please amend my comment to "I am one of those blow hards that never saw Orr play......" YOu're right that those 3 would probalbly be the holy trinity of hockey..or should I say "modern hockey" so as to not offend all the Rocket Richard fans out there.....
