Leafs Trade Luke Schenn to Philadelphia for James Van Riemsdyk

XXXThe Leafs have a ton of defencemen, and needed to get bigger up front, so Brian Burke pulled the trigger on a deal with Philadelphia that unites the Schenn brothers in Philly and brings big left-winger James Van Riemsdyk to the blue and white.

Van Riemsdyk missed most of last season with a broken foot, but had career highs in goals (21), points (40) and a plus-15 in 75 games during the previous season.

Luke Schenn, on the other hand, was drafted by the Leafs fifth overall in 2008 and it wasn't long before we were comparing him to Scott Stevens. Ok, that was just me, but I'm so full of hope and optimism I get a over excited by a solid period of pre-season play by a Leafs prospect. I thought Jiri Tlusty was Peter Forsberg.

Since then, it became apparent that Luke Schenn wasn't Scott Stevens. He's more of a Chris Kotsopoulos.

Good luck, Luke... your Jedi skills are required elsewhere.

Boy, this one's sure generated a lot of excitement. I thought I'd pop in before I had to entertain company (God help me) and expected to see at least a few replies.

I suppose after 40+ years of futility and the occasional year of teasing, this is about as good as it gets until Burke & Co can generate some positive results.

None of them will help the team right away, and that was expected, so no surprise there. Looks like it comes down to free agency, trades, and some Carlyle magic if he can get "his" team together.

@Blind Dave

I get the feeling people don't know what to think about this trade.

Luke was well liked, and is still very young, but Van Riemsdyk is more of what we need right now.

And it's not like we were a Van Riemsdyk away from contention.

I think folks are taking a "we'll see what happens" approach to this trade. It's sort of meh.

Jeez. Glad you posted a picture. Thought Luke "Chen" was Chinese. Obviously don't follow the NHL. Is the Stanley Cup over?????

I'm thinking a guy named Joe Jackson is going to be more of a baseball fan.

I think it's a great deal, other than the fact JVR doesn't play goal.

Speaking of goal, adios to the Player Formerly Known as the Monster.

How funny. The monster couldn't even stop a beach ball while playing for the laughs, but I bet you he'll make the playoffs in Winnipeg. It would be even funnyer if he won a cup there! ha ha

I think you can add Gus to the long list of Leafs who will settle in and do very well elsewhere.

@ Joe Jackson - The picture is of Luke Skywalker, not Luke Schenn....

I'm 99.9% sure Shoeless Joe was joking.

I don't want a guy commenting on this blog if he can't recognize Luke Skywalker.

I am not a Leafs fan.

So, with that said, I have a small Brian Burke rant.

How can you Leaf fans deal with this guy. In an interview after drafting on Friday (Riley is who they took I think), Burke swore up and down they had that kid ranked #1. And if they had the #1 over-all pick, they would have taken him.

What a complete pile of BS. I am sure they picked a great kid, and he will have many great years as a Leaf. But...c'mon! He really would have taken him first over-all. What a bold-faced liar. He stands there and lies to you Leaf fans. If he as a GM would have passed over Yakupov or Murray, he deserves to be fired right now. I can not stand that arrogant ass, and he keeps giving me reasons to hate the guy.

Rant...over.

I heard those comments, and meant to write about it.

Firstly, if that's true, and he has Moose Jaw Warriors defender Morgan Rielly ranked #1 overall, why did he say he considered trading up in the draft? Why give up assets to move up from #5 to pick Morgan Rielly, who was a surprise #5. It's not like there was a chance he'd be picked in the top 4.

So either Burke lied about having Rielly ranked above Yakupov or he actually considered trading for a higher pick to secure Rielly, who most scouts had going much later than fifth.

Here's hoping Morgan Rielly is the next Brian Leetch.

I just don't know how you guys do it?
My son is a Leafs fan, and my heart breaks a little every year when the Leafs miss the play offs.
But honestly, as far as Burke goes, what good trade, signing, or draft pick has he really made?

Francois Beauchemin to the Ducks for Jake Gardiner, Joffrey Lupul, and a 2013 4th round pick was pretty good.

As was this one: http://www.torontomike.com/2010/01/dion_phaneuf_a_maple_leaf.html

@ 519 Rob - I understand your confusion. I'm a die-hard Leafs fan and it confuses me too.

The best I can explain my reasoning is that I am a fan of the team, not the players or the GM, I am a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs. You have to be able to seperate the entity that is the leafs from the people involved in it right now...I know that makes no sense, but I can't explain it any other way.

It's kinda like being in love...you can't explain it, or quantify it, you just are....

@Mike
You know, honestly I am not THAT sold on either of those trades.
Here's why.
The Beauchemin trade was OK, BUT, it was necessary 'cause Burke threw a crap load of money at him, and then needed to move him. I'll admit, that Lupol had a decent year, and Gardiner appears to have a (possibly) big upside.
The Phaneuf trade...I dont know. Phaneuf is pretty much the only thing left over in TO, and Stajan is all thats left in Calgary. I'll give TO the win on this trade, but not by a huge margain. It sure hasn't turned into Leeman for Gilmour, thats for sure.
If anything, I'd say Burkes best deal was getting rid of Toskala and Blake for Giguere. That was a steal.

The Gilmour trade was the best trade in the history of the worlds.

The Alomar / Carter trade was pretty good, too.

@ Mississauga Phil
I know what you mean.

I was a HUGE North Stars fan as a kid. Most of the players I really liked had moved one, but I still loved the TEAM.
Then, they moved to Dallas.

So, with no players left that I had a major attachement to, and the Green and Gold colours gone South, I wasn't a fan anymore.
All that changed was the city, but it just wasn't the same anymore.

Thankfully, the Sens came into my life shortly after...

@Mike
I know, its not fair to compare the Phaneuf deal with the Gilmour deal. The Gilmour deal might very well be one of the MOST lopsided deals in NHL...no...Major Sports history.

On the Alomar/Carter deal. As much as it was a great deal for TO, Fernandez and McGriff still had good years left in them. That one wasn't as lopsided. I think the Padres made out OK in that deal.

June 25, 2012 @ 3:50 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Rob - At the end of the day I think we fleeced Calgary on the Phaneuf deal as well.

Even if you think Dion is a complete pylon (which I do) we managed to unload 5 pylons and got 1 back...that's a good deal in my books.

However the Gigere deal was a steal, you are 100% right about that one!
