How Far We've Come: CBC Digital Then and Now

CBC Digital Then and NowMy buddy Retrontario shared an old ad for http://www.cbc.ca that aired in 1995. It's actually pretty progressive for 1995, the first year I opened a web browser.

It's amazing how far we've come since then. CBC News has a great app I use daily on my Android device. It enables me to listen to the most recent World at Six newscast (28:30) and then the most recent World Report news update (10:00) during my walk or bike ride. I love this app.

Think back to that wide-eyed amazement you felt when you first cracked open Netscape and hit up a web site. Now, think about how the ubiquitous the web is on your smart phone and how you use it 17 years later.

We've come a long way.

As Altucher points out not much has changed if you really think about it.

He sounds bitter. I see his point, but I see it differently.

17 years ago, it was pretty much one device per person, and it wasn't mobile. I checked in at U of T, for example, and eventually got dial-up at home.

Today, it really is ubiquitous. I'm listening to large audio files instantly and viewing HD video and images with no noticeable delay. And I'm doing it everywhere.

Perhaps it's how we access digital information that's changed most radically, and the rich multimedia that's now possible. But it sure is different.
