May 2-4 Long Weekend Open MikeAre we still calling Monday Victoria Day? Can we please rename it Terry Fox Day?

By any name, a long weekend full of 20-something highs sure smells sweet. Bring it on.

You know the drill, discuss anything you want in this space. And if you have a question, I'll drop by throughout the day to answer you.

Just give LA the Cup now...and quit wasting our valuable time!

That's amazing, isn't it?

How does a team underwhelm all regular season, barely make the playoffs as an 8th seed and then dominate the #1 seed, the #2 seed and now the conference finals?

I keep tabs on teams that have won a cup since we last won in '67. LA would be a new addition to that big list...

Easy team to root for, too...

May 18, 2012 @ 10:34 AM

Maybe Not Dean is Dean Blundell and he's hiding in plain sight?

May 18, 2012 @ 11:08 AM

Does anyone know how they program the music on classic rock stations?

I just started listening to Boom on the long ride home and the say the best of 70’s, 80’s & 90’s yet I can hear the same song at the same time (and who considers "the Box" the best of the 80's). I would think with 30+ years to work with they would have more of a variety...curious

May 18, 2012 @ 12:23 PM

Good question, Wayner. I've asked that one myself many, many times. The problem is "worse" on Canadian stations, whose list of decent older music gets thinner the more back you go in time. There was a lot of absolute crap we were force-fed by CanCon rules in the 70s. I do believe that those rules have had the effect of developing a decent music industry in Canada, to the point where I do not think that CanCon rules are necessary anymore.

May 18, 2012 @ 1:02 PM

I'd argue that the non hit ratio was just as responsible for nurturing Cancon.

In 2012, I'd say CanCon rules have little to no impact on an artists success (outside of say Top 40). The reason is most of the new indie, hip hop, etc no longer needs radio to be successful. Obviously, any marketing (radio included) helps, but in this new world order, radio doesn't matter much. At least not FM radio.

On that topic I thought I'd leave this note for radio fans.

WFNX 101.7 Boston has been sold to Clear Channel. A small independent station (3000 watts) with a storied 29 year history. It's the US equivalent of CFNY in the David Marsden era.

The station was cool enough to let their staff (some there for 25 years) have a final show. And they let them program the ENTIRE show. They're going so deep Julie Kramer is using CD's for music that isn't on the computer.

On the Left Over LUnch they played Godfathers - Birth, School, Work, Death if any of you Spirit fans remember that.

It is 2pm on Friday...the Edge has started the weekend-long loop of the "102 Best New ROck songs of all time"

#102......By The Way by RHCP...I can think of more that 101 songs better than this, so it should be an interesting weekend...and by interesting I mean avoiding the edge at all costs!!

Of course Humble and Fred are talking about me. They'll talk about anyone who acknowledges their existance.

Tell us the number of listeners and I'll stop asking the question. How many people are listening to your podcast Humble and Fred? Toronto Mike, we know you know so feel free to tell us.

Give us a number and when it's more than a few dozen losers I'll eat my words.

Hey Not Dean:

I assume you are implying you are Dean Blundell? If that's the case Dean, I'd like to ask you a question!

I think it was in March or April of 2006 when Shredd and Regan from 103.3 in Buffalo decided they'd take shots at you. I recall you retaliating by going on a rant about Buffalo and how much it sucked. It was around the time that the Tim Horton's was bombed in Toronto. I remember clearly because Edge 103.3 had a skit about it & they stopped this dude to ask him what was happening. He said his name was "Dean Dumbell" and then he ran screaming down the street. It was good, but no where near as good as when the Sabres were playing the Flyers. WEDG took out an ad in the Philly paper leaving a phone number for Flyers fans to comment on the city of Buffalo. They took the responses and played it over "Streets of Philadelphia from Springsteen

Anyways Not Dean, I understood that Corus had to get their legal team involved in some way. Wha' Happened Not Dean? Surely someone that dishes it out like you wouldn't be a girly man that couldn't take it. Would they? Sounds kind of lame to me. Kind of like Rob Ford being scared of Marg Delahunty from 22 Minutes.

But you know why I think H&F piss you off so much Dean? Because in a few years, you're going to be in the same situation as they are. Jobs in radio are scarce. Jobs in radio for low brow locker room morning shows are more scarce. In Toronto they're pretty much non existent.

And I can't help but notice how 102.1 is slowly moving "left of centre" in it's playlist. Far less Green Day & more Gotye & Adele. Even the most dense bystander knows that that's not music usually associated with low brow locker room humour.

Of course dude, you could always have your Dad put out the collection plate at church if you fall on hard times. Or apply for a job in Buffalo. Maybe stop in and say hi to Jason Barr at 97,7. LOL.

May 18, 2012 @ 4:07 PM

That might be my favourite Irvine rant of all time.

May 18, 2012 @ 4:31 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

It's a fine Irvine rant, but I don't think it's Dean Blundell posting as Not Dean.

I think Dean would either post as Dean Blundell or would create and alias that was completely different to remain anonymous.

He'd either sign his name, or call himself "Brian" or something. "Not Dean" is likely not Dean, like he/she says.

But still a good rant...

May 18, 2012 @ 4:41 PM

LA will not win the cup. My coyotes are going to come back, trust me. They will win on Sunday and then win the next three. Trust me. It's Coyotes in seven. LA will be gone. The coyotes were in a bit of a slump, but they will win again. You have to trust me on this one though. I am not looking forward to just having boring baseball. Oh well, I just don't listen to baseball. It's too boring.

May 18, 2012 @ 4:53 PM

My May 2-4 doesn't include Victoria.

May 18, 2012 @ 5:13 PM

I'm not a H&F listener but I think it's lame to shit on them for their podcast.

They formulated a plan, invested a lot of their own time & money into trying to make it a go. How's that a failure? A "failure" is someone whining incessantly on SOWNY on how CHUM AM is dead & how unfair it is.

May 18, 2012 @ 5:15 PM

Here you go Irvine. LOL!!!

prate   [preyt] verb, prat·ed, prat·ing, noun
verb (used without object)
to talk excessively and pointlessly; babble: They prated on until I was ready to scream.

verb (used with object)
to utter in empty or foolish talk: to prate absurdities with the greatest seriousness.

May 18, 2012 @ 7:03 PM

Congrats on copying the word from the dictionary slick. I do realize what you're trying to imply (that I didn't know the word prate existed). But I did and I've used it. I've used serendipitous in a sentence too. Mind you, it's been a while.

But nothing can annoy me today Corey. Not only did I pass my CCIE written exam, I also found a nice sweet contract in Vancouver, BC. 5 years of Alberta is enough.

May 18, 2012 @ 11:21 PM

I leave Calgary at the end of June. When I first drove into the Fraser River valley 2 years ago (work) I knew that was it man. The mountains, the green, listening to the Peak 100.5 in my car. It didn't matter how much a house cost or that taxes were higher. It just felt right.

So I will settle in first in the West End. Denman and Robson in what's downtown Vancouver to most. It's a place designed to let you walk everywhere. And it rains and rain is life. Unlike in bone dry Alberta. Food tastes good. People live there because they want to live there.

And in time I want to move to a place called Bowen Island. It's an island just off the cost of Vancouver. I can live there, jump on a ferry, land 15 minutes later at Horseshoe Bay..and jump on a city bus that will have me downtown 35 minutes later. How's that for "transit city" eh Rob Ford.

As for BC Bud..well I don't smoke weed, but I have tried it. It went like this. I took a few drags off the joint, lost feeling in my teeth & crawled into bed. I'll stick with BC beer of which there are many micro breweries.

And for those of you that enjoy "BC" and all it has to offer, here's a brilliant band from BC that Peak 100.5 introduced me too. It's Bob Marley North

May 18, 2012 @ 11:34 PM

Oh and Toronto Mike. The real "punk rockers" of the 21st century are not Green Day. They are not Pearl Jam. They are not the RHCP.

The real punk rockers of this era are the Dixie Chicks. The entire country turned against them. The president spoke out against them. FM radio disowned them. Former fans drove over their records with bulldozers.

And the Chicks came back with a record with a hit single that told the United States of America to kiss their fucking ass. That dude is real punk. It's more than a skateboard and a pin in your nose

May 18, 2012 @ 11:37 PM

Going to the Jays game. Gonna drink over priced beer, eat exspensive hot dogs, get caught in horrible traffic, pay ridiculous parking rates and have a blast :)

Go Jays

May 19, 2012 @ 7:56 AM

@Irvine Who are and what did you do with the Real Irvine?

I agree on the Dixie chicks . That was more punk than 3 power chords strung together. Or a skateboard and nose ring.

May 19, 2012 @ 8:29 AM

The Dixy Chicks suck. they really do. They are over hyped. Rascal Flatts is better any day, so is Lady Antebellum. Baseball sucks. I wouldn't go to a game unless someone paid me and they would have to pay me a whole lot for just sitting there being bored because that's what I would be with baseball. Yes, the Coyotes are going to win the cup. tomorrow will be win one of four. It will be coyotes in seven. As for Vancouver, I have relatives there myself, but I don't like it there very much. Too much rain.

May 19, 2012 @ 8:56 AM

@ Rock Band avatar does not look like me. But she looks as I hope I would if I was a rock star LOL.

I heard a ton of STP last night. It was wonderful. The songs that are my daughter's lullabies...she has good taste!

May 19, 2012 @ 9:11 AM

Ryan G

My girl and I went to Deerhurst Resort for a few days last week and it was fantastic.

Expensive, but fantastic.

For breakfast you can have an order of bacon and eggs, for $15. Or you can have the all you can eat buffet for $20.

I generally avoid buffets since it's a license to be a complete glutton - I don't really need to eat 6 plates of scrambled eggs, 42 sausages and 19 strips of bacon.

So I ordered a bagel and a coffee with some slices of tomato, and my girl had an english muffin with coffee, for a total of $14. It was like eating at Tim Horton's while wearing a monacle.

The best money spent though? The swedish massage.

Where else can I drop $150 to have a strange woman rub me down (almost) everywhere for an hour, using warm oils, in a dim room with relaxing music, while I'm nearly buck naked, all with the blessing of my girl?

But the strangest site of all while in Huntsville?

A middle-aged white woman driving a taxi.

I believe Brett Lawrie to be the greatest player in the history of baseball.

May 19, 2012 @ 12:27 PM

@Cheryl: the Dixie Chicks are over rated? They're definitely more talented as musicians & artists than RF or Lady Antebellum. They're also far more purist to their roots. And that's cool

@James: The Chicks are punk rock, at least in attitude. I mean could you imagine Green Day telling their fans & the president to kiss their ass? And then releasing a song AND a movie about it?

And they questioned their own genre & the radio that supports it in "Long Time Gone" much like John Cash did.

"We listen to the radio to hear what's cookin?
But the music ain't got no soul

Now they sound tired but they don't sound Haggard
They've got money but they don't have Cash
They got Junior but they don't have Hank
I think, I think, I think"

@Elvis & Toronto Mike. Nah man, no blogging. I mean it might be cool to go sit at the Starbucks on Denman & Davie, look out at English Bay & write but...nah.

Look on the upside!. You'll be able to stop by my tiny cottage on Bowen Island ($$$ for real estate there). The kids can camp in the front yard. My dog (Pug) will love it. Plus Bowen Island beer is only $7 bucks a 6 pack. You can take the kids on the ferry to Horseshoe Bay then jump on Route 257 and head into Stanley Park.

And Mike, if you do it on a weekday, you can head over to 99.3 The Fox & have Brother Billy sign your pec.

Blind Dave

I did it too. Fail, that is. See below.

That was me abovc who asked if you'd nailed down the contract. Just forgot to sign my name. VERY happy for you. Seems like you're ready for a change and you're really geared up for it. That's awesome. And the rain in BC is a bit misunderstood. There are lots and lots of summer sunny days there.

The Dixie Chicks conversation hasrenewed my interest. Think I'll have to check them out again.

I appreciate your dedication to the Coyotes, and good luck, but I just don't see it. So with LA in the final, I would definitely cheer for them if the Rangers get in, but if it's New Jersey I'd have a hard time taking sides.

May 19, 2012 @ 1:01 PM

@Blind Dave:

Thanks Dave. I've had the fortune & adventure of living right across Canada now. Halifax, Ottawa, Toronto, Waterloo, Edmonton, Calgary, a short stint in Whitehorse & on to Vancouver. Each city has it's own charms as does each region of Canada. BTW, Whitehorse & Yellowknife are pretty cool. Whatever you do though, do NOT drive to Yellowknife. I have to admit buying caribou smoked in a real teepee in Edzo was cool. The MacKenzie Highway defines "the true north strong and free". You can hear your heart beat if you stop your car and turn off the motor.

Summer isn't so bad in Vancouver for rain. Winter can be at times. But I'll take it over the incessant burning sun of Calgary. One would think that constant sunshine is something people would look forward too. It gets on my nerves. Summer can be like Groundhog day sometimes (especially in Edmonton). Daylight appears at 4 AM and lasts till 11 PM. All summer. Makes for some nasty grass fires (see Slave Lake) and for some wicked storms. Last year a dude actually drowned in the street because it rained & hailed so hard. How fucked is that?

The rain brings green & it brings life. You feel it coming down the Coke (Coquihalla) as you head towards hope. The whole world is green & forest. Speaking of the Coquihalla, the snow pack this year reached 900 cms. A bit more than 2 hours from Vancouver. 9 meters of snow. The west side of the Coke (known as Hells Gate) is the steepest grade I've ever seen on a highway. Either that or Hwy 3 going into Osoyoos.

BTW, if you're a microbrewery beer fan, BC is the place. Man, they have a microbrewery in every small town in the entire province. And they have ghost towns.

Good beer & a kick ass transit system. The foundation of any good place to live.

May 19, 2012 @ 1:34 PM

4x4 Time

Anyone have any reccomendations on NYC hotels that do not cost $300 a night? Thanks.

May 19, 2012 @ 3:22 PM

Have you tried searching online? TripAdvisor lets you narrow down by price & having used it frequently, the reviews are pretty accurate. If the bulk of the reviews are good, chances are it's good. Of course anything that is super cheap probably is for a reason.

I used a cheap hotel site in Vancouver once. I ended up at the Budget Princess in the Downtown East Side (skid row like nothing you've seen). The place was surrounded by $30 dollar hookers & every type of addict imaginable. I had to take all the shit out of my car and leave the doors unlocked so the crack heads wouldn't smash my windows. The hotel wasn't bad in the end, just old. After a few drinks I took a stroll around East Hastings & even went in the pub. An interesting adventure to say the least. Moral of this story, don't choose the cheapest hotel on the list.

If you are going cheap, also check the bedbugregistry. It's an online site that people report bedbugs at. Like Toronto & most large cities, NYC is dealing with a serious infestation with bedbugs. No matter where you stay, look between the sheets & mattress & box spring. If you see any indications, get out. Put your clothes in the bathtub & hang up everything else. Play it safe.

May 19, 2012 @ 5:46 PM

Well, Rascal Flatts and Lady Antebellum are better than the Dixy Chicks any day. I don't like the Dixy Chicks at all. The Coyotes will win the cup. Just wait. They will win tomorrow and then go on and win the next three games. My Habs did it a couple years ago, so my Coyotes are going to do it this year and then you'll wonder why LA isn't there anymore. Just wait. Baseball really is a boring game. It's too slow and the season is too long.

May 19, 2012 @ 6:04 PM

This new Irvine blog sucks.

May 19, 2012 @ 6:14 PM

42 entries ago I wanted to say something.. now I just want to say.. Kings will do it (my 14 year old son called it first game of first round - annoying part now is that he reminds us *every win*...); I love Lady Antebellum and I 100% support Dixie Chicks even though I can only stand a teeny-tiny part of their music.. I love Humble and Fred. Not every episode gets me but I know that even if I don't "love" this one, the next one will be something I will learn from. I haven't even mentioned that I love the Jays.. I've been a happy home-body today doing house-stuff. Best May 2-4 in years! Moneyball is playing on TMN.. Life.Is.Good.

Who has read the Shades of Grey trilogy?

May 19, 2012 @ 6:25 PM

@Cheryl. If you were a Kings fan, Mike would kick you off this blog. Remember back in the Wendel days, the Leafs were beaten by the Kings after that stupid non call on Gretsky. I would have tossed my TV out the window, but there were people on Bloor Street below.

But you know something Cheryl? I watch Ghost Adventures sometimes and they talk about "residual ghosts". These are ghosts are are just energy and do the same thing over and over like a sound track. I finally realized it today reading this while making pasta. YOU are the ghost of this site. You are that residual presence that repeats itself endless. My wife is Wiccan, maybe she'll be able to help you.

PS. The Kings are likely going to win the Cup. Look on the bright side. It'll make for great late night talk show jokes.

May 19, 2012 @ 7:52 PM

Blind Dave

Yes, that non-call on Gretzky was a very bad (non) call, but I don't think Kerry Fraser did it on purpose, and lets face it, the Leafs still had one more game to put it away -- and they didn't.

That was also the last year that Cheryl's Habs won the cup. I have a feeling it'll be a long time coming for either the Leafs or the Habs.

Yeah, I learned all about residual ghosts on Ghost Hunters. I watched the show for a few years until I got tired of it, but I stll love learning about the spirit world in general.

And I do agree with Irvine. Our country is a beautiful and special place, and every part I have travelled to has its own special way and feel. I've done all the provinvces, so it's just the three territories left to go!

May 19, 2012 @ 8:27 PM

Welcome to the coast Irvine. When you get settled there is a summer festival in Surrey called the Fusion Festival - it is worth the skytrain from the West End. No booze, but great music, great food and a great vibe.

May 20, 2012 @ 7:50 AM

LA will not win the cup, absolutely not. The Coyotes are going to win today and then win the next three games. Next year my Habs will win the cup. That will be great. I don't believe in ghosts. There is no such thing just like Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, or tooth fairy. Anyway, six hours until game time. Go coyotes go.

May 20, 2012 @ 9:02 AM

@Blind Dave: Given the current state of Canadian hockey, I think it will be a while before any of our teams win anything.

If you haven't visited the Territories you should. I spent a couple of weeks on a project in Yellowknife. What a great place. You can own a house in town, on the lake and it feels like the bush. Once you get there is a sense of absolute peace as you look across 1000's of miles of nothing. I prefer Whitehorse in the Yukon more. Great little city, awesome downtown & surrounded by small mountains/big hills. I had a contract offer by NWTel put on the table a few years ago. I SO regret not taking it. If you like the North, check out the magazine "UP Here".

@LEW: I'll have to check it out. I was hoping to make it to the Squamish Music Festival this summer. I gave serious thought to moving to Squamish but it's just too far to drive every day. I made a pact with myself to stop driving unless it was a trip for the weekend. That's why I love the West End. It's got a vibrant street life without the pomp of Yaletown or Granville Island. You can walk to Stanley Park & you can walk to English Bay. Lots of little hole in the wall places to eat & cool coffee shops (Hello Blenz).

And I can listen to 100.5 the Peak.

On that topic, check out the Zone 91.3 out of Victoria. It's a pretty good alt-indie radio station. It's signal beams clearly into most of the Lower Mainland. It's far more diverse than 102.1 is.

May 20, 2012 @ 12:42 PM

Have a Great summer with Blue Jays baseball. Time to hibernate again. See you in September.

Suns, Habs & Coyotes DONE LIKE DINNER.

May 20, 2012 @ 2:21 PM

What did I tell you? My coyotes won today. I told you they would. See, they're too good. Three more games and then no more LA. See, I told you so. Mike Smith is the best. Both goals were scored by Shane Doan. It's going to be Coyotes in seven. You have to believe me. There will be more hockey yet. Sure wish hockey lasted all year. I hate baseball. Baseball season is so long. Why do they play 162 games anywawy in the regular season? That's too many.

Robin Gibb - RIP.

Nothing to say but love your music (early stuff) & especially - Islands in the Stream you guys wrote for Dolly & Kenny.

It's my 22nd anniversary today & that was a song my Wife & I loved even though it wasn't our wedding song.

May 20, 2012 @ 8:18 PM

Mike - Thank you so much for posting that 1993 Blue Jays World Series clip. I never got to see the whole inning. Sure, I've seen the hit many times. I was at a wedding in Columbus, Ohio that night. Not a single TV nor radio in the hotel where the reception was had the game on. At about 1 a.m., our group tuned into CNN or ESPN to learn that Carter had hit the home run.

I hated the BG's. I hated their high voices when they sang Staying Alive. That sucked. Anyway, the Coyotes are not done. They are going to win the cup. Trust me. They will. The cup belongs to my Coyotes. They will win the next three like my Habs did two years ago. Just wait.

May 21, 2012 @ 4:54 PM

Mississauga Phil

@ Cheryl - I don not recall the Habs comming back from 3-0 series last year...which series was that???

The Coyote's will fall to LA, and as I stated before, what is the basis for your beleif that the HAbs will win the cup next year??? I'm going to assume it is alcohol abuse since they have none of the peices they need...including a coach...they have no coach, and abunch of overpaied has-beens.

Don't get me worng, the leafs aren't in much better shape, but I'm not the one claiming that a team who finished in the basement is going to win the cup.

So Cheryl..I ask you..what is the basis of your theory?

May 22, 2012 @ 12:37 PM

I'm talking about the 2010 playoffs when my Habs were down three to nothing to Washington and then went on to win that series in seven and the next round did it to Pittsburgh. It will happen again. I just know my Habs won't be bad like last year. My Coyotes will win tonight and then the next two games. Just wait.

They were down 3-1 the only team in the last 25 years to come back from 3-0 were the Flyers against Boston a couple of years ago.
