What I Never Knew About Annie Leibovitz's Shot of John Lennon and Yoko Ono

picturesEverybody knows the iconic photo of John Lennon and Yoko Ono in bed taken by Annie Leibovitz for Rolling Stone magazine, but did you know this pic was taken only 5 hours before John Lennon was shot?

I had no idea.

By the way, Mark David Chapman has thus far cheated us of thirty-one years of John Lennon's music. That really, really sucks.

That's awesome information.

I guess he died with a "bang" in 2 different ways.

John Lennon was an ICON for the world with his vision & especially his music.

Just IMAGINE if he were still alive today.

I respectfully submit that almost everyone knows that...

I know that photo, and I've read and seen a great deal about the death of John Lennon, yet I never knew that photo was taken the day Lennon was shot.

So I respectfully submit that most people do not know that.

It was, in fact, news to me.

I think I knew that once, but had forgotten, so thanks for the reminder, Mike.

Lennon's death is only matched by Jim Henson's, for me, in the what-could-have-been-ness of it all. And also, f*ck cancer for taking George. It's a bitter pill that we lost the two Beatles who did the most interesting work. (Not that I'm wishing we'd lost Paul or Ringo ... just that we'd kept John and George.)

Paul was the establishment. John was anti-establishment.

Pauls songwriting peaked with The Beatles, John was getting better and better.

The reason why the AL photo is so well known is because it was taken on that awful day, so yes most people do know that. However there is no shame in not having known that. The other famous and even more disturbing photo taken that day is of Lennon signing the album for his killer whos name i will not mention here or ever. That photo, and a few others taken of Lennon while he milled about, was taken by Paul Goresh. My blood boils when I think of that whole thing. I still have my copy of Double Fantasy and in fact I bring it out to my dj nights about town. My dad and I bought it at Honest eds as soon as it came out that fall, and then lennon was gone. Horrible.
