Your Blog Sucks Now

thumbsdownOn Friday afternoon, at Downsview Park between Hey Rosetta's set and Broken Social Scene's, my brother Steve made the following declaration.

Your blog sucks now.

A perfect storm has dramatically reduced my blogging time in 2011. I won't delve into the details, but it's clearly affected the quantity of entries. From where I sit, I don't think the quality has suffered as much, but I'd like to ask a question to those of you who are still dropping by...

Does this blog suck now?

Not at all. And tell the nay-sayers they can have their subscription fees back if they think it's that bad. ;)

Disagree - as an expat Toronto Ian living in LA .... It's a lifeline ... Even w fewer postings

The only thing that sucked was that concert.

Brad

I don't check it as often, but it's still a good read

Cheryl

No, it doesn't suck. I like posting on it. Not everyone likes my posts, but they can just skip them. Go Habs.

July 5, 2011 @ 6:07 PM

Ryan G

no it doesn't.

it's a fine blog Mike. it's interesting because i have a blog too (only difference is that nobody reads mine), but mine is laced with stories about how ignorant people are constantly pissing me off, whereas toronto mike is so much..nicer.

but my real question..what of Bev? WHAT OF BEV?

July 5, 2011 @ 6:23 PM

Brother Ryan

Steve is correct in that it is not as interesting as it once was. It's clear that the attention to it has dropped. It's not a second job for you anymore, that is clear. We get it dude.

But still, Steve is correct. Your blog sucks more than it did in the past. I for one didn't like the whole DATE BEV thing just because it seemed completely out of place on this site.

July 5, 2011 @ 6:38 PM

Steve

I stated your blog sucks because you post less content. Isn't that a compliment?

I'm not sure I'd go all the way to "sucks", but ever since you became a Twit, the frequency of entries has decreased, I believe.

In fact, I'd like to see some metrics, pre and post-Twitter.

As that greatest Canadian band (not) Sum 41 says "All Killer No Filler".
I'd rather read quality than quantity anyway.
What we're all interested in is how you job is sucking or you marriage is falling apart or your kids hate you or someone reason to make us feel better about our lives...

July 5, 2011 @ 6:51 PM

Steve

Nope, it doesn't suck. There's less going on, but less going on doesn't equal suck so long as what does go up is still more interesting than not.

July 5, 2011 @ 7:38 PM

The blog is fine. Agree or disagree with you, you are almost always an entertaining read. The quality over quantity suits me just fine.

No it doesn't suck YET. HOWEVER, it has changed ALOT in last while with less interest & I don't visit it as much. When I saw Why date Bev. & George Effing Brett? that lost it for me.

You must be going through a change in your life & if entries continue as above, this blog will SUCK.

It's definitely different - I'm not sure that suck is the right word, however... It used to be more personal; I enjoyed those reflections on topics such as your family, music and the city, and what it means to you. I do agree with the commenters above, however; the Bev entries were a bit odd, and certainly not what I was expecting to read on your blog!

It does suck more than it used to. I blame twitter and other stuff.

It sucks less than you do though but you're a pretty good sucker - like chrome off a trailer hitch.

Everyone goes through good times and bad times, ups and downs, but mostly people age and bloggers end up hanging their keyboards at some stage. Its a process, it has a beginning, a middle and an end, and, this is the way it should be because frankly who out there would you keep reading no matter what they were churning out, or, do you want to be writing for the sake of writing?

Anyway, i'll keep calling you on shit, and telling you occasionally when i agree.

If you still enjoy it keep going. ..

"I've got magic, I've got poetry at my fingerprints."
"I've spent, I think, close to the last [couple of years], I don't know, effortlessly and magically converted your tin cans into pure gold. And the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job [?!], which is to write."

"That's me being polite," - lol.

Your quality lately is much to be desired. Your entries & comments seem to be too "political" wanting a debate & not informative as in the past. Nothing ever mentioned about your family anymore! Everything seems to be about Mike & his opinions.

July 5, 2011 @ 9:16 PM

headsup

If you're blog sucked, I wouldn't spend my time reading it. I find it interesting. I'd definitely take quality over quantity. Just keep plugging away and I'll keep reading.

Whaddya mean "now". (Couldn't resist)

Blog's fine. You update often, each entry is well written and interesting. It hasn't sold out, gone down in flames, or been neglected for weeks or months on end. There's a significant number of readers, and a healthy comment section.

Seems good to me.

It does seem diluted a bit...but still interesting to visit.

let me get this straight

you host a free site where people can chat for free and you post interesting stuff that we all enjoy for free and people are complaining???

there's nothing else like this-please keep doing what you're doing and we'll promise not to complain about this free fun

At least it hasn't gone the way Fred's site has. I agree the amount of content has decreased. I used to check in to this site in the morning when I read the newspaper as I normally get into work 30 minutes early.

I don't think the Bev thing was out of whack. It was different that's all, but there are a number of your posts that aren't what you would consider the norm.

I know people say they get busy and that's why they can't post, but it's kind of like that friend that you see who hasn't bothered to talk to you in a month or two. They say they meant to, but the reality is that they didn't want to. Perhaps you are unispired at the moment and therefore don't have much to post. If you were a position of wanting to post, you are a skilled enough writer that it wouldn't take more than 5 minutes to post a good enough rant or personal post.

I don't blame you, at least you aren't just posting sound bites of yourself on the radio.

What was wrong with the Bev entry? I'm curious...

I wasn't pimping her out!

Just thought it was very inappropriate with Bev. entry & other comments also. Your life must be changing.

I WAS SHOCKED as a family Blog, with James & Michelle & Taryn.

You have not input anything about them for a LONG time -

FAMILY FIRST.

Most readers of this blog live in the GTA. It's a good audience to find an eligible bachelor for Bev.

It wasn't anti-family.

Your Twitter is the problem.

Well, who cares about Bev. As for the George Brett thing, who cares about that either. That's baseball and that was so long ago. go Habs.

Mike:

My best friend in High school in 1976 took his own life & that's why it still really bothers me to read about such things.

His brother was a T.Dot. policeman & Juris used his weapon. NO BS. - His brother the Cop did the same thing 3 weeks later (with a note saying he felt guilty & wanted to see his brother).

Nothing worse than going to a funeral for a 17 yr. old who all his friends had no idea about his final decision.

What do you mean "Now?"
Just kidding.
You're just hitting that tipping point when your fans remember the old days when only they were on board. I think that you're still grinding out the gold and as you once told me, "you do this for your friends and family" and we still love your blog.
Now get me a job already.

Don't be so hard on your self Mike, far more interesting than my blog would be, you present topics that are relevant to your readers.

I like Freddies Blog for his Political rants, but yours takes me in another direction, the Ying and The Yang I suppose.

Keep up the good work and don't let detractors sway you.
