TSN RADIO 1050

TSN RADIO 1050It's official. TSN RADIO 1050 will launch on Wednesday, April 13.

As we discussed when Mike Richards was hired by BCE Inc., The FAN 590 will have some competition in this market when a second all-sports radio station debuts later this month. Personally, I love this move, as the 1050 frequency was wasting away with a simulcast of CP24 and a little sports radio competition can only make things more interesting for us fans.

Essentially, the TSN ~ Sportsnet battle will now extend beyond the television to Toronto radio. Fun!

It will be interesting to hear the full TSN RADIO 1050 lineup, and final changes to The FAN 590's lineup in response. Maybe I'll finally get my own show...

Out of the gate, TSN Radio is making a big mistake.

9am - 12pm Dan Patrick
12pm - 3pm Jim Rome

American synidcated college and basketball talk.
Didn't work before on the Team and it ain't gonna work this time.

The day time should be local, local, local, local, local.

February 17, 2011 @ 3:33 PM

JP

Totally agree, Larry.

I'm interested in listening to Richards..

But Patrick and Rome won't make me switch from Blair and Brady (both of whom I like).

And to be honest, I've been listening to McCown so long, I'm not sure anyone TSN throws out will make me switch there..

February 17, 2011 @ 3:47 PM

JP

They should have done local shows. They could have even looked at old Fan guys like Stellick and Hogan. Or how about TSN guys like Jack Armstrong, Steve Kouleas or Jay Onrait.

February 17, 2011 @ 3:48 PM

Brian

Totally disagree. Love Rome and don't really care for Bobcat. Why would they want old FAN guys??? New blood is what is needed. Someone to cater to the under 35 set.

February 17, 2011 @ 3:53 PM

JP

Old Fan hosts aren't ideal, but I think almost anything local would be preferable to American syndicated stuff.

February 17, 2011 @ 3:58 PM

Tevy Pilc

Outside of broadcasting Argonaut games, what other kind of live sports events could we expect from TSN 1050?
(Realistically speaking... since there's no way they'll get the Jays - Rogers owns the Fan 590 or the Leafs - I just don't see them leaving 640)

February 17, 2011 @ 3:59 PM

Andrew

Wow... US syndicated shows.
I hope it's just a stop gap. Won't make me switch from the fan. If I wanted to listen to US shows, I'd turn on my Sirius.

Sad.

February 17, 2011 @ 4:05 PM

JP

Tevy - next year is the last year on 640s contract with the Leafs.

There is speculation that 640 will give them up and go all news/talk.

February 17, 2011 @ 4:16 PM

Mr. Sarcastic

I'm sure gonna miss CP24 radio!!!!

February 17, 2011 @ 4:28 PM

_Justink

I happen to listen to the radio a lot, and let me tell you there's no way I'll listen to Patrick and Rome over Blair an Brady. TSN's making a mistake by going with the syndicated shows. They won't make people switch from the FAN.

Now, if they put TSN personalities on the air like Kouleas, Landsberg, or Duthie as hosts I might actually listen.

February 17, 2011 @ 4:30 PM

Brian

If your a puckhead and don't care to listen to anything other than hockey talk than no reason to move from The Fan, but if you actually might want to hear some NFL, NBA, or PGA discussion than TSN might be an alternative. The FAN may as well be Leafs Radio.

Toronto, ON (February 17, 2011) – Setting the benchmark for sports broadcasting in Canada since 1984, TSN, along with CTV Inc. and CHUM Radio, announced today that TSN RADIO 1050 will launch on Wednesday, April 13. Debuting just as the NHL and NBA Playoffs heat up, the highly-anticipated all-sports radio station will be available to sports fans in the Greater Toronto area on AM 1050 and nationally online at TSN.ca and on TSN MOBILE.

The next evolution of the TSN brand, TSN RADIO 1050 will feature best-in-class analysis from TSN’s sports experts and insiders and coverage of live sporting events such as Toronto Argonauts games during the 2011 CFL season. TSN RADIO 1050 will broadcast from CTV’s historic Queen Street headquarters and TSN’s studios in Toronto.

“TSN’s mandate has always been to be Canada’s Sports Leader and TSN RADIO 1050 gives the network yet another platform to deliver industry-leading sports coverage to Canadians across the country,” said Phil King, President of Sports and Executive Vice-President of Programming, CTV. “The powerful combination of TSN’s all-star broadcast team and CHUM Radio – one of the most successful radio organizations in Canada – enables TSN RADIO 1050 to make an immediate impact on the sports radio landscape.”

TSN and CHUM Radio will announce additional details on the launch of TSN RADIO 1050 in the coming weeks.

Live Events
Headlining TSN RADIO 1050’s live events lineup are the Toronto Argonauts, as the station has secured the exclusive radio broadcast rights for the team’s pre-season, regular season and playoff games through the Eastern Final during the 2011 CFL season. TSN RADIO 1050 will also have a pre- and post-game show for every Argos game, plus a weekly show on Toronto’s CFL team. TSN is the exclusive English-language television broadcaster for the CFL in Canada.

Toronto Argonauts President and CEO Bob Nicholson remarked, “We are excited to embark on this journey on TSN RADIO 1050, allowing our fans access to all of our games on radio. We have a long history with the leadership at TSN so we know the quality of work they produce and the excellent standard with which they cover our team. Their radio arm will take this relationship to a new level and we couldn’t be more excited.”

Along with live Argos broadcasts, TSN RADIO 1050 is also the official radio broadcaster for two of golf’s major championships – THE BRITISH OPEN and the U.S. OPEN – and EURO 2012 and 2016.

Broadcast Team
TSN RADIO 1050 will feature the best in sports talk radio utilizing TSN all-star roster of sports broadcasters, experts, analysts and insiders, including Bob McKenzie, Darren Dreger, Pierre McGuire, Dave Hodge, Ray Ferraro, Dave Naylor, Glen Suitor, Chris Schultz, Matt Dunigan, Jack Armstrong, James Duthie, Michael Landsberg and Dave Randorf.

In addition, veteran radio broadcaster Mike Richards joins TSN RADIO 1050 as the host of the station’s marquee morning drive program, THE MIKE RICHARDS SHOW. The outspoken and always entertaining Richards was previously the host of the highest-rated sports morning show in Canada, Mike Richards in the Morning. Richards returns to the biggest radio market in Canada after his highly successful stint in Calgary, where his show was the fastest-growing male-targeted radio program in the province.

ESPN’s Dan Shulman will also make exclusive contributions TSN RADIO 1050. It was announced earlier this week that Shulman will work exclusively in Canada for TSN, providing analysis and reports across TSN’s platforms and programs.

Program Lineup
Along with Mike Richards hosting TSN RADIO 1050’s highly-anticipated morning show, the station’s weekday lineup marks the return of the JIM ROME SHOW to the Greater Toronto area with outspoken host Jim Rome, along with the Toronto debut of the DAN PATRICK SHOW with SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL’s Dan Patrick.

What's the demographics for listening to pro sports 24/7 on AM radio? It sounds like two conglomerates fighting over crumbs.

February 17, 2011 @ 5:14 PM

JP

CQ - I believe that overall, the ratings for sports radio are lowish..

But, sports radio rates very highly for men 25 - 55 with disposable incomes specifically. And that tends to be the market the advertisers want to attract.

February 17, 2011 @ 5:48 PM

CQ

C'mon. Men 25 to 45, with disposable incomes, sit around listening to AM radio in 2011?

Great news that the Dan Patrick show is now in Canada. Easily the best sports talk radio show....

February 17, 2011 @ 7:43 PM

CQ - apparently! Otherwise I guess we wouldn't have 2 1/2 sports stations in the city.

The "Mike Richards Show" is decent...however it really does get predictable rather quickly and boring at times. He gave Calgary listeners 6 decent years...considering there was no competition within the Calgary market. The FAN 960 listeners Im sure dont miss 'Bob Cole chicks I like', or english premiere soccer updates, on line gambling..ect.

With that being said, Calgary listeners were subjected to many of the announced "Broadcast Team" members via the Richards show and most of them were difficult to listen to most of the time.

Good luck to you TSN Radio 1050...you are going to need it!

I'm from out west near Calgary... Mike Richards was the best part of every morning. As for Jim Rome, his show is excellent as well. You need Jim Rome on your sports radio... neeeed. You can local just before and just after the jungle. Also.... will TSN radio be broadcasted on sirrius? Might give me another reason to resubscribe.

March 7, 2011 @ 9:50 PM

Barth

You guys are lucky to have him. The fan960 in calgary is totally without any good local content since he left. He was great in Calgary. Very entertaining.

As long as TSN talks about something other than hockey for a portion of the day, I will listen

Competition drives quality. Simple. Fan590 has had no competition and as a result the only person worth listening to is McCowan. I don't know one true sports fan in this city that can stomach 'all leafs radio' so from my perspective Patrick and Rome are welcome here. Options rule!

April 5, 2011 @ 10:29 AM

Calgary Guy

I do miss Mike in the morning, the fan is hurting for a good morning show these days. However I often found that Mike would go back to some very tired material, as well kissing butt to guests like Pierre McGuire made me feel a little sick some mornings. Bob Cole "chicks I like" just sad. That being said he did make you laugh and every so often he would provide a great interview. The talent pool left behind at the fan is well ,shallow. I'm pissed he left my city but morning drive T.O. is where's it's at...good luck trader.
