State of the Union Address

notepadSome of you have been dropping by for almost nine years. Some of you just found out this place existed. I figured it's time for a general state of the union address, a.k.a. an entry to test that everything is functioning properly.

At about 5:30 pm yesterday, a disk failure brought this site offline. It's been rebuilt, with minimal damage, but I won't know everything is cool until I publish an entry.

You may have noticed posting frequency is far less than it's been in the past. There are two reasons: I'm crazy busy lately and I'm aiming for quality over quantity.

There will be no entries for the sake of posting (except for this one). If I deem nothing blog-worthy, I'll skip a day. There will be no "what I had for breakfast" entries unless it was a really, really good breakfast. It's going to have to be one helluva breakfast. Damn, now I'm hungry...

I'm very interested in your feedback. What entries do you hate and which ones do you enjoy most? Be honest... I promise not to cry.

Long time lurker

As a white male born in 1974 who has lived in the GTA, now in BC though, your entries fit my demo pretty well...except the Leafs...I hate the Leafs...mostly due to incessant media barrage of the past 25 years

BTW, I wonder if there is correlation on the crash to the most recent post celebrating the rise of Chrome (to which I've switched to full time about a year ago)

I sense a Microsoft conspiracy afoot

@Long time lurker

Nice to hear from you! I'm going to leave this as the top entry for a while so all the readers who don't ever comment follow your lead and chime in.

Maybe all my readers are GTA white males born in 1974?

February 23, 2011 @ 4:42 PM

Pat MaGroin

Geeze... hummm
Great, so no more stupid stuff about Freddie P...PERFECT
NO more Leafs...EVEN BETTER..
Busy...YES everyone has to grow up at some point.

Another Lurker

I found this blog when looking for Humble Howard about six years ago.

I come by once a day to see what you're talking about.

Love it!

Good slim it down who really cares about Brower tends or 20 year old bands breaking up.

February 23, 2011 @ 5:35 PM

The obit posts seem like obvious linkbait and delude your quality post ratio big time

February 23, 2011 @ 5:46 PM

White male, engineering student and my early 20's in the GTA. Found you looking for info on the EDGE a few years back. You are one of only a few blogs I have in my Google Reader. Its probably easier to tell you what I glance at over what I read. I glance at leaf updates and celebrity deaths (especially if I have no idea who they are). I most enjoy the little bits off the internet you share (video, stats, etc.), as well as your opinion. I look at everything, somethings, a lot more closely than others.

February 23, 2011 @ 5:55 PM

It's good to have more people hating the Leafs. Well, if you hate the leafs, you must love the Habs. Habs are great. AS for posts I hate, I hate posts about baseball because I hate baseball. I hate posts about all these modern rock or rap groups I know nothing about.

February 23, 2011 @ 5:57 PM

Cynthia Spreadbottom

As for all people that have a pulse NO ONE EVEN CARES ABOUT THE habs

February 23, 2011 @ 6:15 PM

Been following you for MANY yrs. mostly on a daily basis. This blog is yours & you do whatever is necessary to keep it going. Personally the music stuff & radio dialogue isn't important to me. I can understand your family is growing up & a LOT less of your personal stuff has been submitted lately. I can relate to that with lifestyle changes as kids get older.

Your Friday rants MUST stay as it lets readers start dialogue.

I'm sick & tired of seeing "I love my Habs & I hate the Leafs & baseball sucks".

February 23, 2011 @ 6:24 PM

My favorites are Toronto-centric news and events. I came here Googling for news about Martin Streek. (sigh)

I'm not a hockey person, but it seems like you do a good job on keep abreast of what the team's up to.

I agree with (other) Mike that the obits seem out of place, save for those that you had an actual connection to. Obits are for the living, after all.

You tend to do a good job posting some YouTubes that I haven't seen spammed all over the place. The recent one about the U.K. was neat. The RetroOntario highlights are appreciated.

I can't say there's anything really that would make me switch the channel. Your writing is good, you tend to be fairly insightful, you update regularly. You have a cool jacket. =)

February 23, 2011 @ 6:36 PM

How else will i know you are alive if I don't see a daily post?

I am going to have to start checking with Mom to make sure you are okay when I see a few days go by without anything.

Also, I found this site when you were sitting next to me in your underwear eating cheerios and told me about it. I remember it vividly.. LOL

February 23, 2011 @ 6:39 PM

Lose the CFNY B.S. and it would be perfect.

Keep making posts where Mike from Lowville and Ajax Mike make boobs of themselves.

You know I love you and your blog. I tell you every morning.

February 23, 2011 @ 6:42 PM

The radio ones are always the best. Don't care for/ can't stand the sports ones (there's enough sports blabber on the web) anyway.

February 23, 2011 @ 6:50 PM

i actually like the death notices

February 23, 2011 @ 6:53 PM

I like the blog the way it is. But posting to make an entry is never good idea.

You've never done a "what I had for breakfast post" though.

February 23, 2011 @ 6:54 PM

Well, about the death notices, I don't know half the people who died in them. That's the problem with the death notices. Leafs suck. Habs rule. Ole ole.

February 23, 2011 @ 7:04 PM

Found your blog during the big FAN 590 shakeup in June, now I am a daily reader and twitter follower. Love the radio analysis, no negatives, keep it up and thank you!

February 23, 2011 @ 7:56 PM

I found you trying to find out what happened to Jason Barr. I love the radio stuff. I can live with sports blogs as well. This is the only blog I read.

February 23, 2011 @ 8:09 PM

I'm a, wait, wrong Radiohead. lol

Radio is what brought me here and what will keep me here. But please don't do a "what I had for breakfast post" coz I don't want to lose mine if you had something I can't stomach.

February 23, 2011 @ 8:11 PM

I'm a mid-twenties white male who goes to school in Toronto. I stumbled across your blog in search of info about Martin Streek.
I enjoy your entries about radio, sports, and random YouTube links. I can appreciate your need to make strategic quality posts. Its safe to say that I, and many others, are thankful that you are willing to continue posting on a regular basis. I check most days. Thanks for your blog, keep up the good work.

February 23, 2011 @ 8:34 PM

Discovered you when I went back to work one September without Humble and Fred! I will have to check your archives and then will know how long it has been! Love most of it but find the sports dull as i have NO CLUE but........sometimes your info comes in handy in sports like conversation when i can pretend i have some opinion!

February 23, 2011 @ 9:02 PM

P.S. I love the stuff about your family and that seems to be missing lately........and the retro stuff is my fave!

February 23, 2011 @ 9:04 PM

Gta Rob

Came here years ago for some radio news. Great site, love the post, could do without the mindless comments from some diehard sports fans who say the same thing over and over again.
Keep it up Mike.

February 23, 2011 @ 9:19 PM

Enjoy the Retro links as well.

February 23, 2011 @ 9:43 PM

Buffalo Boy Mike

For a review from south of the border, I have no problem with your Blog Mike, I stop and read every day just about, even when I am lacking for ideas on Buffalo Boy I come by and check out things, usually my evening when I get on the computer goes Toronto Mike, Freddie P, facebook, Buffalo Boy....not necessarily in that order.

February 23, 2011 @ 10:17 PM

Female, 25, from Toronto - now in Vancouver.

I stop by once a day to see what the word is in my fair former city. I find your commentary a good "man on the street" supplement to reading the paper.

I would hope for at least one new post a day...that way I won't be disappointed and can read something. Maybe leave the Retrontario stuff for the days when there isn't much happening?

I love the deathwatch - even if it is a no name.

Also, less Leafs...more Raptors!

February 23, 2011 @ 10:30 PM

White guy, engineer, 40+ (oldster).
Enjoy - radio gossip, Leafs talk, technobabble, liberal leanings, CFNY, long walks on the beach.
Eyes glaze over - obits, softball, baseball, Leafs in '93, >1000 song titles, CFNY deathwatch, empty filler.

February 23, 2011 @ 11:31 PM

My 2 cents...

We all pay nothing to consume this content.

It's safe to say Toronto Mike isn't getting rich off of us. Maybe some pocket change from the ads... I know I never click them.

We're lucky this blog exists and we can all participate. I feel guilty reading every day and rarely commenting.

This is my favorite blog. Kudos, friend.

February 23, 2011 @ 11:32 PM

Of course, I miss your independent (and meaningless, lol) SLS lists of old. And the Humber River family stuff is pleasant. I am already awaiting the news of what vehicle(s) you might get to test drive for Ford this summer...

February 23, 2011 @ 11:40 PM

Another GTA, born in 1974, white male here. Now living way south of the border.

On my Chrome bookmark bar, you are the second link, after Facebook. Usually you are the first thing I check daily. I feel like you are my little link to my old like in Toronto. I'm a big Jays and Leafs fan, so I prefer those posts. And I usually skip over all the radio crap, no offense. Well, except when we went after that guy who was stealing your shit and posting it on his site.

I don't follow Toronto politics too much anymore, so I don't really know who Rob Ford is, so I tend to skip over that, too.

But as someone above said, this is your blog. Write what you want. I'm sure we were all be here reading.

February 24, 2011 @ 2:55 AM

Look at my handle, I miss my city, I miss my team and I look forward to your stuff. I got your shit when you did the bet with the girl from Team 990.I check in once a day, and I also wear #5 when I fly the colours here!

February 24, 2011 @ 3:08 AM

i like the blog Mike.

for me it's a great daily diversion (hey that's alliteration!)

In fact your blog, along with Freddie P's, inspired me to start my own, mostly to retain a certain sharpness to my writing. i even started doing the monetizing thing with the google ads or whatever it's called, and since i'm the only one who reads my blog, i've received a grand total of zero!

-i love the insider radio stuff, primarily about the de-evolution of cfny

-posts about unusual or quirky stories/websites,etc like the one you posted about the site that just featured animated gif's from movies

-Not so faves:

-don't really care for the posts like "a thousand songs with the word love in it" or whatever

-Toronto Mike infomercials

that is all.

February 24, 2011 @ 8:04 AM

James Hamilton

I think I see too many dead people here. Unless they are famous Canucks or have ties to Toronto you should cut down on the obits. I mean, come on, Uncle Leo?

I - like many readers it seems - found your site while google'n radio news,
specifically edge 102.1

I enjoy most of your posts and I simply enjoy browsing. I wouldn't change much. We all keep coming back, it's for a reason.
And to add; I was quite proud when you reposted a comment of mine of Nov. 11th-ish as your main entry regarding my intellectually sarcastic opinion of our Leafs at the time.
*thumbs up*

February 24, 2011 @ 9:05 AM

I'm a 40-something Marketing Communications Specialist who was born in Toronto. I check in most days because I enjoy Mike's writing style - and lack of grammatical errors.

I too enjoy the family content and most of the stuff Mike posts. I discovered this site while looking for Humble and Fred a few years back.

That broad Cheryl - and her inane Habs bullshit - adds zero value.

I also enjoy the thoughtful comments posted most of the time.

Great blog, nice variety of content - well done, Mike!

February 24, 2011 @ 9:23 AM

Great place to stop by ..I do it once a day. I'm closer to 50 than 40. Mostly great stuff..obits are fine, short and sweet. Love the radio insight that you provide. The song lists - I will skip that everytime. Love reading peoples opinions, other than Cheryl's - her goal is obvious: to be annoying. One thing I'd like to see is the odd poll with voting buttons. Keep up the great job !

February 24, 2011 @ 9:50 AM

Like a few others, I picked up your blog while searching about what happened to Humble Howard. I've had your blog in my "favourites" folder ever since.

I'm a white female, age 40 with three young sons. I live in Mississauga and also read Mississauga blogger's entries, but alas, I can't find them anymore. Whatever happened to that?

For the most part, I enjoy your entries, although I must admit, it gets a bit tiring reading about the Leafs.

I enjoy reading about GTA radio gossip and techie entries.

Hope this helps your demographic profiling!

February 24, 2011 @ 10:16 AM

Not a fan of Leafs or Raptors related entries.

February 24, 2011 @ 10:55 AM

Keep doing what you are doing Mike. The mix and balance are good.

February 24, 2011 @ 11:06 AM

27 year old male in Waterloo, ON.

I love the posts on Toronto radio; that's how I found you a few years back, but haven't been a regular reader until recently. I also love Leafs and music related posts. I guess I read this blog to be kept in the loop of anything Toronto related since I briefly lived there and occasionally visit it. All in all, I like what's here.

February 24, 2011 @ 11:09 AM

I appreciate what you've got here, the mix of different things is no problem for me. I read just about everything, only skips are usually the here are a bunch of songs with X or Y word in the titles and anything about basketball, because I friggin hate basketball. I realize I'm in the minority there though so keep the basketball stuff coming so long as it interests you. Unlike some I appreciate the death watch posts. some people's deaths I probably would have missed were it not for those. My favourite posts are usually to do with radio.

Bottom line though is that it's your blog and you must be doing something right if we're all still here. Do what works for you and what you think is best and I'm sure at least most of us will stick around.

February 24, 2011 @ 11:30 AM

Entries I hate = All ass kissing of Corus = about 50% of this blog. Love the other 50%

I'm a '64 white male, moved to T.O. in the late '80s. Liked Detroit and Boston before moving to T.O. so agree that the brain damaged cheryl should just go away. Long story on Detroit and Boston, but suffice it to say, I'm a Leaf fan. Went to my first game in '73, saw 13 home games in '10.

I pretty much "follow" you on twitter now and click on links to posts that Interest me, vs going to the blog and reading it every day like I used to. So keep your titles interesting.

I think I found you/your blog from googling for H&F.

Nothing that I really dislike per se. Maybe brain damaged cheryl, but that's not your fault.

Go Leafs Go

Corus hates me. Not only is there no ass kissing, but it's been quite the opposite. Revisit the archives, bro.

@Everyone who is tired of Cheryl's comments

I don't delete comments unless there is a personal threat or the revealing of info I don't think should be hosted on my server. That rarely happens.

I certainly don't delete comments b/c I disagree with them or they're annoying. I'm not sure where Cheryl came from (although I think it was the PK Subban entry from last spring), but she's here and I'm not about to censor her.

What would you do if you were me?

February 24, 2011 @ 1:35 PM

Mike, I still come here every day looking for Sandra Rinomato's breasts!

February 24, 2011 @ 2:35 PM

Male, black age 46

I try to read your blog everyday when I can. I can't think of anything that really bothers me...even the "content fillers" give me a laugh from time to time...

February 24, 2011 @ 5:38 PM

Well, the Habs will beat the Leafs tonight. I've been a Habs fan for many years. It used to be that they won the cup a lot. Anyway, as for the Raptors, I'm a Suns fan in basketball. Suns all the way.

February 24, 2011 @ 6:13 PM

Mike, I agree 100% with why you do not block Cheryl, but I wish you were more of a prick who would just do it already.

I have nothing bad to say about her... because after 500 posts all we know about her is that she loves the Habs and doesn't know who any relevant person that has lived is....

That game was awful last night. It really was. My Habs lost in their own home. They'll win tomorrow though. The Leafs won't make the playoffs. If they do, I'll hide in a hole.

February 25, 2011 @ 4:35 PM

@Cheryl. Promise?

February 25, 2011 @ 9:56 PM

The "@" preceding a name actually started on blogs when you are referring to a specific entry. For example:

@Cheryl, do you promise to hide in a hole if the Leafs make it to the playoffs? I know a lot of people with shovels.

The Twitter thing works too, but in the case with @Cheryl here, it's not her Twitter ID, I'm sure.
