Dean Blundell Sexualized Children on Edge 102

radioAbout a year ago, I wrote about the Dean Blundell Show violating Clause 9(b) (Radio Broadcasting) of the CAB Code of Ethics. That was nothing compared to what happened today. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council has concluded that Dean Blundell violated Clause 8 (Exploitation) of the Canadian Association of Broadcasters’ Equitable Portrayal Code which prohibits the sexualization of children in broadcasting.

It all started with Dean Blundell tweets about Justin Bieber. Bieber fans objected, and Dean let them have it with tweets like "Save your energy for puberty or to fend off your dad tonight while you’re sleepin’” and "He’ll be chuggin’ before he’s 18 if he likes that music."

The CBSC has found no justification for allegedly humorous references to children in sexual contexts, including those of the nature of sexual innuendo, double-entendres and inexplicit sexual comments that would not be problematic if the references were to adults. The Panel concludes that the pre-pubescent reference, “Save your energy for puberty or to fend off your dad tonight while you’re sleepin’” was gratuitous, unnecessary and a clear violation of Clause 8 of the Equitable Portrayal Code. The Panel also considers that the predictions that Josh, the youthful tweeter (they estimated his age as 12ish), will be “chugging” by the time he turns 18, are similar. The Panel considers that these comments were just as gratuitous and unnecessary and were, consequently, equally a violation of Clause 8 of the Equitable Portrayal Code.

It wasn't the tweets that got Dean in trouble with the CBSC, it was talking about the tweets on Edge 102. "Save your energy for puberty or to fend off your dad tonight while you’re sleepin’” and "He’ll be chuggin’ before he’s 18 if he likes that music." crossed the line.

What do you guys think about this ruling? Did Dean sexualize children on Edge 102?

CFN-Why?

A station of class is now a station of crass.

How does the CBSC regulate tweets?

That would be like someone who works for Apple saying that the HTC Evo 4G violates spectrum rules and the FCC getting mad at htc for it.

Interesting...

its the context hes talking aboutit, hes making fun of the fact they like Beiber, However if hes directing this at specific kids then I do have a problem otherwise give the guy a break, I have never really liked Blundells style of humor but geez, worse has been said and done on the radio

Dean is a goof. Seriously.

So what does it all mean, Mike. Will he lose his job?

I don't think Blundell is a comic at all. He's just desperate.

The CBSC does not regulate tweets. This happened because Dean read the tweets on the air.

From the CDSB FAQ

http://www.cbsc.ca/english/faqs/decisions.php#4

Q. What happens if the CBSC finds a Code violation?

A. If a CBSC Adjudicating Panel decides that the programming has violated one or more Code provisions, the broadcaster must announce that result on air. It must make the announcement twice, once within three days following the release of the decision in prime time for television or peak listening hours for radio, and again within seven days following the release of the decision in the time period in which the offending content was broadcast. It must also write a letter to the complainant(s) within 14 days thereafter indicating that the announcements have been made. The broadcaster then must provide the CBSC with a copy of that letter and with copies of the tapes containing the broadcast announcements.

It is also expected that a similar violation will not recur; that is, the broadcaster will not air similar material in the future. It is up to the broadcaster to determine the appropriate means to ensure that the offending type of broadcast does not recur.

So Dean's job is safe, unless Corus wants to use this to get rid of him.

October 20, 2010 @ 8:28 PM

Thanks for the explanation Mike. I read the report on it just now.

Doesn't seem like a big penalty. Airing the ruling 2 times, 1 time during DBS and 1 time during their peak listening time.

Didn't they get in more crap with the jackass boys?

Here's the explanation as to why they got suspended for the Jackass stunt: http://www.torontomike.com/2004/03/the_reason.html

According to Alan Cross, the suspension had nothing to do with the content from the show but with Dean Blundell's refusal to follow orders. Apparently, when it became apparent things were getting out of hand, Cross called the studio and ordered Blundell to cut off the guests' microphones and have security escort them out. Blundell continued with the show and that's why he's suspended. "Insubordination" is how Cross described it this morning.

The station is more like "See? F'n Why?" nowadays, with Blundell being the poster child (no pun or allegation intended) for all things tasteless on air. Brought to you by Corus and Ross Winters.

October 20, 2010 @ 11:10 PM

Caster

For reasons no one can remember today, the Jackass thing was just a PR stunt.

The work of CBSC is paid for by Corus, etc.

This started when the CRTC were getting too many letters about Jesse & Gene and didn't want to deal with the hassle.

If the complainant is dissatisfied with the apology, they can go to the CRTC, but the "we promise we won't do this bit again" announcement is obviously designed to avoid that.

It's trickier when the show is coming from outside the country (e.g. Howard Stern, when he was on FM, as Sirius is not part of this game).

Dean's jokes went too far. It's possible that he didn't even believe they were really kids he was talking to.

But it doesn't matter. I stopped listen to the station at the end of August. It is completely off my radar and my presets. In the end they probably don't care about me anyway.

October 21, 2010 @ 10:17 AM

NMB Ryan

who cares.

i never listen to the radio but last week had a car for work and listened to that show every morning.

awful. unfunny. boring. forced. every bit seemed to come back to the same topic.

i scanned various stations and they all were quite terrible.

but maybe it's just me. either there's just no radio station that caters to my demo (you'd think there would be at least ONE in the country's major radio market) or they're all subpar.

whatevs.

In the biz

Ask Blundell about his hissy fit complete with Corus lawyers a few years back. Shred and Regan at 103.3 in Buffalo posted a photo of him implying....well wait, call him and ask him. Or maybe Jason Barr would care to speak up.

Blundell seems quite ready to dish it out but when he's on the receiving end he throws a girly hissy fit. Ask Jason Barr why he is really gone from Edge 102.

Don't bother writing Ross Winters. Listen to the station and write the advertisers and tell them you will refuse to use their products or services if they advertise on Edge. Then go to one and hand out this decision to female customers with children.

October 21, 2010 @ 10:34 AM

James

Your comment lost credibility to me when you used the phrase 'girly hissy fit'.

I'm waiting for someone to pick up Biggs and Barr...from what I've seen on youtube, they are gonna be good.

"In the biz" is probably that same guy that posted multiple times when Jason was fired. Kinda hard to believe anything he says.

Blundel appeals to his target audience and he does it well. While I am not a fan of most of his comedy, he knows who he is speaking to and he isn't speaking to me. He knows it. I know it.

Just because you don't like what he is doing doesn't mean he is bad at his job. 10 years and counting isn't an indication that he is bad at his job.

He doesn't appeal to me but I am not of the High School/College age demo.

And I doubt neither are most of the people that read Mike's blog.

@McNulty

OK, but at some point we need to draw the line. Anyone can go on the air and say "Shit, piss, fuck..." or have a bunch of porn stars on(a la Howard Stern)...but at some point what you say does have legal obligations in the sense of decency.
The point is, I don't find the show funny. Never have. It's the SAME OLD STUFF all the time. It's when shows run the course of creativity that they start crossing the line into things that just don't need to be said in the public realm to gain ratings.

October 21, 2010 @ 2:54 PM

McNulty

@Cambo

He crossed line. I acknowledge that. But I think the intent of the joke needs to be weighed as well. He didn't actually mean what he said and he has been forced to apologize.

Of course the apology will be empty because it is forced.

What other sanctions should he face? If the listeners find him repetitive and objectionable they will leave. I would prefer that they do so a new host could take over but I doubt that will happen. And knowing The Edge they will put in Fearless Fred. That'd be worse.

I still listen to the Blundell show and was listening during the Beiber rants. I found them funny and was laughing along with them. However, taken out of context as this is it does appear to violate a clause or two...

Justin Beiber fans can be very malicious. They threatened to kill Kim Kardashian when she joked about marrying him...

October 21, 2010 @ 3:33 PM

Irvine

Who cares Boon? In the end you'll keep listening to him. I guess I can't understand how you, as a father with children, would even accept a comment like "fend off your Daddy while you are sleeping"

Myself, my dream would be to get in the UFC ring with Blundell. Anytime "Deaner".

Amazing, this guy's dad is apparently a minister or something.

This station sucks anymore, I tune in, if thre is a good song on I listen, if not I turn it off, cant stand the personalities on air anymore, fire them all and just play a great mix of alternative and retro and everyone would be happy

The show is not funny anymore, it hasn't been for a while now. The only time I would find myself cracking a smile or chuckling was when Jason made a comment, or followed up on something... now that will never happen, so I don't see the point in listening.
Dean is just a bully, he's not funny. Unfortunately all of his jokes now are making fun of others, and if he gets into an argument with Todd or anyone else for that matter, he gets his back against the wall and only has comebacks like 'you're stupid' 'shut up, you're so stupid you idiot.' It's like listening to a baby on the air. Todd has his moments but they are few and far between.. he acts like he's always trying to impress Dean and make him laugh. Whenever something funny IS said, Dean just feeds off of it and repeats it over and over until it becomes old really fast. None of the personalities are very good.. I miss Barry Taylor. His dry comedy made me laugh so hard at times, not to mention his 4:20 thoughts and Barry funny segments to name a couple.
The station in general kills all music that you might have been a fan of... because of the Edge I'm already annoyed with bands like Metric, Kings of Leon, Three Days Grace, to name a few.. There is so much music out there and they keep repeating the same thing every hour until you want to pull your hair out. I stopped listening to Edge a while ago. Out of habit I find myself randomly tuning in when I don't like anything on the radio, but after about 20 secs I just turn it off again.

- End rant

I suspect that some people are not paying attention. We have a rash of teenagers that are either gay or percieved to be so committing suicide because their classmates are bullying them and yet an entire society feels that it is appropriate to bully Justin by making all kinds of innapprpriate comments about him for the entire world to see and hear. It will take more than wearing purple to stop these suicides, we actually have to stop bullying our youth as well. The adults should know better.

I never heard Dean Blundell, but I can tell you this much. Radio isn't like it used to be. I have all my MP3s and play them at random. That's good enough.

October 22, 2010 @ 8:33 PM

Irvine

Perhaps if you stopped listening to Dean he might go away. If you stop eating at a restaurant it tends to close down too.

Blundell is the epitome of "modern rock" today. Once an almost elitist snob music, it's now low brow & moronic. The older folks (like this forum) can't come to grips with the fact that the music has gone from "The Smiths" to Three Days Grace or Alexisonfire. In the words of the Dixie Chicks "It's a long time gone and it ain't coming back again". Edge continues to pretend it's a "hipster" station by playing Tokyo Police Club (dated by 4 years as new) or my favourite Phoenix. That band had music TEN years ago. Edge just found them now.

Given the huge choices in music today I have to wonder why so many of you sit and whine about the past & hang on to 102.1 as if it's going to get better. It's not. Nothing to see here. Move along. The problem isn't Blundell. The problem is you.

BTW Blundell, I'm still open to that charity UFC match. Don't worry, the KO will take about 20 seconds.

Obviously this skidmark in the underwear of life has never dealt with anything but privillege. How the CRTC who is up everyone else's butt not see that this toxic DJ is justifying abuse ...Apathy belongs nowhere in society. it is just a made up emotion for those who won't stand up and do the right thing. I have been living for over 40 years dealing with my abuse at the hands of various adults and It enrages me that this Meathead is allowed his vocation./// Thanks for standing up for the victims by allowing it to happen over and over again...beaurocrats and lawyers who protect the abusers should be shot and pissed on and I have no empathy for them when something happens to their family.

I contacted Dean about his terrible comments regarding the movie "Precious" where he laughed about her being raped by her father....

Dean goes WAY over the line on some issues and it makes me not want to listen to my favorite radio station anymore...

He basically blamed me by saying that I was taking his 'immaturity' to seriously... Um... how about growing up a bit Dean to avoid issues like this?

October 25, 2010 @ 11:48 AM

Karim

Let's face it the Dean Bludnell show is the most listened to radio show in the GTA, so Dean ain't goin' nowhere. He's allowed to get away with so much, simply because of his position. Blundell's offensive tweets, only gives the show more attention, and this is what any company wants, in radio, bad publicity is better than no publicity.

October 26, 2010 @ 7:43 PM

Satya

Most of these posts are about how Dean sucks in general, which seems to have been established a long time ago.
Cheri, endor..., Morgan all make great points. To answer your question, Mike, yes, the father-child comment qualifies.

Any of us who survived/work with survivors of childhood sexual assault - or any social/political justice issue for that matter - know that as long as we're joking about it, we're condoning it on some level.

Not cool.

I personally think everyone should just get over it! The amount of offensive material out there now blows Dean out of the water. If you don't like it, it's called a "power button"! Turn it off! Shows like Family Guy cross more lines than Dean, and they play that in the middle of the day when children get home from school on CABLE Television. Either become desensitized by it or live a sheltered life. Unfortunately there is no way to avoid sensitive material nowadays. I'm not a fan nor a hater, just voicing my opinion. Thanks.

Interestingly I came across this while searching for concerts.
I agree with the majority of poster's here that Dean is insensitive, ignorant, and immature.
I have personally written 102.1 explaining that the Dean Blundell show is offensive, basically losing me as an listener in the mornings.
( Oh well I just have to play a CD on the way to work )

P.S. Please don't compare Dean actions to a cartoon "Family Guy". Dean is directly communicating to minors in our community I am mad that he would say that to anyone, but if he had said that to my kids I would be in front of Irvine looking to do some "charity work".

Fuck off. All of you need to get a sense of humour. Beiber can suck my ball sack while I sperm on Mike's face. Oh my God....Did I offend some of you with that? Too bad cock sucker's free speech is a bitch. Turn the fucking radio off if you don't like it.....again, suck my balls....

I kind of agree with John above......some days I want crude and silly....thats is when I turn to Dean and the boys. On the days I want cheese.... I turn elsewhere and when I want quality I turn to 94.9

There seems to be a growing trend of "Internet Hate" out there. Where if you disagree with somebody you tell them to F off and suck this or that thing. Seriously just because you have animosity doesn't mean you should act like a douch. I'm sure a face to face conversation would go differently.

As an FYI freedom of speech doesn't include the spreading of hate, threats of violence and other conditions.

Thats because Canada's laws are retarded. We say we have freedom of speech but if we censor some things that a few disagree with then its not really freedom of speech. It has come to the point that most people have become over sensitive and therefor we have to appeal to everyones taste. Yes in hindsight those laws were meant for extreme cases, but to complain about what someone says or does on the radio like this is just stupid. Either grow up or shut up. No one care that you are offended

Dean's a gas. Yes... they are poo poo pee pee jokes. So what? He wouldn't be able to maintain his job if nobody listned to him.

Howard Stern is a Shock Jock. Dean isn't; yet. But good for both of em. My life is more enriched as a result.

really, anyone who is offended about the bieber shit is a f**kin`loser who has way too much time on their hands including the tard that complained to the CRTC about the initial child gayness shit... that was funny, bieber is a fag.. bieber is not american, claims to be, thus is a traitor to canada, bieber prolly does chug the dick.. blundell is funny as fuck, todd is an ugly fag, but still funny, jason was funny, bug got let go, derrick is blind and funny.. bieber, is gay and pubescent.. fuck bieber, dean blundell is the shit.. oh and meatus... it is spelled rhetoric... hahaha

You guys are a bunch of babies, who sits around listening to a radio station they don't even like just to complain about it? I'm sure there are more productive things you can be doing...

It is comedy it may not be your preference so don’t listen, if everyone had the same sense of taste the world would be boring. These are jokes (JUST JOKES he doesn’t want them to be real) and I think they are funny. I don’t know Dean personally but I am sure he is man enough he would die to protect your children in a real life situation or put himself in harm’s way for a fellow citizen. If you do not like what your hearing change the station and let us other 2 million listeners enjoy it. You’re the kind of people who complain about words in an anthem and what is acceptable in a kids cartoon or in a song, it is mine and my wife’s job to delegate what me and my family see or hear IT IS NOT the responsibility of the broadcaster. It is the only morning show with any kind of a pulse and you better not wreck it for all us happy listeners. And to get penile like yourself Irvine you want get in a Ring give me a holler my rings anywhere you choose you girly man talking all big on a reply board, your just a sad pathetic person with nothing better to do than complain to feel better about your own failures in life. Meghan I love you and your comment.

Hi. I'm a woman. I get offended on a day to day basis from REAL sexism. This is a comedic radio talk show. RELAX. I like to laugh at jokes knowing they are harmless and hilarious. And you want to know something really crazy and new....when I don't like what I hear...wait for it....wait for it....I TURN THE F*CKEN STATION OFF. God people are a bunch of cry babies these days. We all have choices. Choices to say offensive things...choices to listen to them...and choices to change the station! Get over yourself. You only give Dean more cred by whining about him. Yea, I said whining.

Hahaaa! I love the show! I lmao every day.
Really people. Get over it! Who cares es what he sais. This is his job.and he is still able to do it as long as people like myself and so many others keep listening.
Which we will! Because I can find the humor in his show.and know to take a joke.
And I bet even the bitch dude that started this tunes into his show at least once a week. I know he does.because there is always that one dick that calls in to try to be the man..but is always put in his place. Haha!
