Free TTC on New Year’s From Midnight to 4am

TTCFor those Torontonians planning their New Year's Eve festivities, don't forget that the TTC is offering free service from midnight to 4am.

I'm pretty sure other transit systems in the GTA have free service as well. GO Transit, for example, is free from 7pm on December 31 until 2:10am on New Year's Day, and Mississauga Transit is free from 7pm to 4am.

Note how the TTC makes you pay to get to the party whereas everyone else is taking you to and fro free of charge...

Dizzy

It's a start: many systems have free service on New Years Eve. The idiots at the TTC are more concerned about their purse strings than offering community service on that night.

Toronto Icarus

Thats pretty cynical Mike.

There are plenty of reasons to knock the TTC but the fact remains that new years eve is one of the busiest party nights of the year and there is no obligation on the TTC to provide a free service. In fact it could easily be argued that the money earned on new years eve could be used to defer the fare rise for a few months.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I'd argue it's just the right amount of cynicism.

All other GTA transit systems will be free by 8pm on New Year's Eve. Most earlier than that. Here's the list:

Brampton Transit – 7:30pm December 31 – 3:25am January 1
Durham Region Transit – 8pm December 31 – 2am January 1
GO Transit – 7pm December 31 – 2:10am January 1
Mississauga Transit – 7pm December 31 – 4am January 1
York Region Transit – 7pm December 31 – 3am January 1

The TTC is free after midnight for four hours, but that's only because of an outfit called Toronto Entertainment Alliance. http://www3.ttc.ca/News/2009/December/18_12_Free_TTC_NYE_service.jsp

So yes, it's good the Toronto Entertainment Alliance is paying for free TTC from midnight to 4am, but I'd be amiss not to mention the fact that all other neighbouring systems will be free much earlier, meaning you can take their system to and from your New Year's Eve party.
