416 000 Mobile Phone Spam

phoneOver the past six weeks or so, I've been receiving spam calls on my Blackberry. These calls come from a number of phone numbers, all starting with 415-000. When I answer, the recording tells me the warranty on my car is about to expire.

I know I'm not the only one getting these, because my wife gets the same call on her cell. The last two numbers I received this spam call from are 416-000-9763 and 416-000-5579.

I have two questions:

  1. Are you getting these mobile phone spam calls?
  2. Is there any way to block inbound calls from the number 416-000-xxxx?

I just pressed 1 like the instructions said and it put me on the line with a girl. I told her that I don't even own a car and that I'd like my number taken off whatever stupid list they have. Haven't gotten a call since.

People here at work have received the same calls and believed the person until they started asking questions like, "What is your name?" - wait a minute - you're call me!

I haven't gotten any but I have calls from +0000000000.

I don't pick up any calls from numbers that aren't in my address book to begin with.

Answer the call like Daniel says and press 1 and tell them you don't own a car. They took me off the list and haven't heard from them again.

The number keeps changing and blocking them won't help. I spoke to them and asked them which car was expiring and they were unable to answer me. It was fun.

As I am sure you are aware there is this neat tool called "Google" and it can tell you a lot about this company.

Here is the link

Toronto Mike

I'm not familiar with this Google you speak of.

I do LOVE live.com search, and that AMAZING tool got me to http://consumerist.com/5147530/att-mobility-sues-over-auto-warranty-robocalls .

You know those annoying robocalls on your mobile phone about renewing your car warranty? The companies behind the calls use spoofing to remain hidden, but AT&T Mobility just filed suit in federal court to track down the culprits, then hopefully make them stop. This is great news, because judging from the quotes given to RCR Wireless, the FTC and FCC both don't seem too concerned about the matter.

It's more fun throwing the questions into the wild than cheating by using this Google thing.

"This is the final call before we close you case"

Three times a week 416.000.XXXX calls I ignore it and a message is always left.

I agree with Mike it would be nice to be able to block calls.

Ya, I get this call a couple of times a day. also getting the 'you've won a cancun vacation' from some spanish lady, daily. Bottom line is, your cell phone provider, or your cell phone authorized dealer has sold their list of phone numbers to make some extra cash. Bastards

Anonymous, too

I've had a number of these too, always during office hours when I don't answer my cell, with never a message left.

@Anonymous, I'm no geek but I'm sure auto-dialers can just start dialing any number at random. And unlike email addys, the phone number system is very simple and it should be extremely easy to program your targets into any software to narrow it down. Do you have some proof the cellcos are selling numbers?

1. Yes. I've gotten the car warranty expiration one, among others. One that has been calling lately (2-3 x/day) is a 519 one which is apparently a TD telemarketing # (I Googled it).

2. No. (I know, we should be able to).

And so much for that opt-out campaign b/c telemarketers can gain access to the do not call list! Argh.

I got crazy guy calling in Arabic and limited English for more than 6 hours in one day - evening till 2am at night. The guy used 2 phone numbers and kept calling me almost once a 20 minutes and total of his call was about 30 times including 2 SMS I quoted below. He called me again in this morning before 9am.

يا معغن اناعو زك فى شغل متخليش و حده در عليم كلمنى ام تغضه"

"Hello, good night really i like your voice and i hope to hear u again and know more about u like ur name and how old u are? Good night and good dream with angel my name is ahmed and my number is 0117718273"
