Possum Kingdom is About a Rape

emailI received an email the other day about "Possum Kingdom", a great little song from the Toadies that I put on SLS4.

Back in the day, I used to run smellslikesour.com. I stopped actively caring for the site a couple of years ago because something had to give, and the SLS site was that something. One of the songs that sparked a great debate over there was "Possum Kingdom."

Here's the email I received.

ah, boon - re toadies possum kingdom

all these years later and people STILL are carrying on about "vampire" "no, murderer".

as for the "actual events" that "took place" at "possum kingdom lake" in texas - - go google it.  anyone.  you will find nothing.

btw - the links to previous pages are not working, which may account for the frothing and spewing by Impugn.  and which may frustrate anyone trying to follow the previous, invigorating, silly discussion - it contains even born-agains and extra terrestrials, if memory serves.

here to end the controversy, a citation from

"I am from Graham, Tx. Its about ten minutes from Possum Kingdom lake. There were no murders, and Possum kingdom is not a place in Texas. The song is about a single rape that happend in the 90's.
- Andrew, Graham, TX"

and you thought the toadies were more imaginative than that!

so if you are DESPERATE to find out the truth, contact these people:

Possum Kingdom Chamber of Commerce
362 N. FM 2353
Possum Kingdom Lake
Graford, TX 76449

940.779.2424 (Local)
888.779.8330 (Toll Free)
FAX 940.779.4631

you can be sure that any chamber of commerce worth its salt would capitalize on such a popular song! such a big hit!

Yes, many thought this song was about vampires, or a murder. You can see the debate, started in 2003, over here.

Here's that great tune.

One of my favorite songs. I even named a book after it. And actually, there was a body found near Possum Kingdom lake, but that was in 1996, after the song was written. It was actually a male victim, who had been murdered (and dismembered) by his girlfriend for insurance money. The story was reported in HBO's Autopsy series. Autopsy 4, I believe.

From sources in Texas, the song was about a once popular urban legend that vampires hung out around Possum Kingdom Lake a la The Lost Boys. That's all.

I'm from PK and live just outside of it. People around here still debate the meaning of that song. Rape, murder, vampire, urban legend or whatever. The fact is, PK is a strange place where strange things happen. Sure, the summer time is fun and lively, but during the winter, when all the tourists and weekend warriors are back at home, this place can be pretty scary. There have been many unexplained deaths out here that you'll never hear about. There has been gruesome murders that have been forgotten about. My guest, is that song was written for someone in particular to hear and they know the true meaning and that's all that matters.

What a random entry (pun totally intended!!) to come across after all these years!! Haven't
thought about that band or song in at least a decade and a half!! Great song regardless of
the lyrical intent.

I discovered your blog recently because I had watched a pathology movie Revolving around murder cases . One murder case started out with a torso of a man in his 30s been found somewhere around the Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas . The man was a rancher and I have had rodeo guy Who was killed by a girlfriend in an attempt to collect a large insurance policy that she falsely put out on him according to the show . It was the fourth episode of a show called Autopsy. I watched it on Amazon prime but I think the show originally aired on HBO . Part of that episode noted the fact that there had been a similar merger were a torso was found whether that be possum Kingdom Lake or that county or just in the state of Texas I have no idea . I have never give the song much thought other than earth always thought it was a cool song until I saw this episode immediately I went to Google and started researching it and found several different places talking about vampires versus murder theory Which eventually led me to your blog . good read by the way
