The Raptors Choose...

raptorsThere is much speculation as to whom the Raptors will draft tomorrow with the first overall pick. I'm not a smart man, but I know who the Raptors will take. They will draft Italian forward Andrea Bargnani, making him the first European to go first overall.

Andrea Bargnani played last season for the Benetton Treviso. Who was the Executive Director for the Bentton Treviso last season? The answer to that question is Maurizio Gherardini, the newly hired vice-president and assistant general manager with the Toronto Raptors.

Sometimes 1 + 1 does in fact equal 2. Welcome aboard Andrea.

Yeah, except when MLSE are involved. It's not a lock and I know Colangelo should mean the end of the joke that MLSE has become (at least where the Raptors are concerned), but look a what they did to respected hockey men like Burns and Quinn. Also remember Fletcher? I don't think he has been the same since he worked for MLSE. Dryden and Grunwald also come to mind. That company has a way of turning respectable businessmen into idiots. Some regain their respectability when they leave, others don't.

Ok, but what the hell is Maurizio Gherardini doing here if we're not drafting Andrea Bargnani?

I will be floored if we draft anyone else tonight.

I'll be mildly surpised too, but it could be a smokescreen for the draft. The GMs like playing the bluffing game when it comes to who they're going to choose. Colangelo may be posturing in order to get another player, or to maximize the trade value of his pick. Gherardini will be a big help in European scouting wether we pick Bargnani or not. Euro players seem to be more attractive to Toronto since they're used to being outside the US (unlike most American players). Colangelo has made it abundantly clear that Toronto won't be afraid to scour Europe and South America for the best international players and he may favour them over American players.
