Hi Mike,
I just wanted to share in your outrage about the little girl who was refused her first Holy Communion because she had to use a rice wafer in place of the standard wheat-based wafer. Even as much as I am a christian, I have to say that I am appalled at such a decision by the Catholic church. Practices such as these were given to be (powerful) symbols to help people in their relationship with God, not to be an impediment. It is striking in its parallel with the story of Jesus and His disciples picking and eating kernels of wheat while crossing a field on the Sabbath. The Pharisees, literally applying the Law, scold Him for doing any kind of work on the Sabbath. He told them, quite rightly, that the Sabbath is was meant to keep (for the well-being) the people, not for the people to be burdened by keeping the rules. A symbol, like the Holy Communion wafer, should be an aid to faith, not a hindrance.

Thank for pointing out this injustice.
Leland
