I can't remember a sports news story more tired and exhausting than the Nylander storyline. All Nylander all the time in the MSM and on twitter since training camp opened. Whether he ends up signing or getting traded for D help, I'm just excited for it to be over with.

Ideally, the Leafs re-sign him and trade a different combination of picks and prospects for a defenceman at the deadline. Because as good as this team is, you saw what happened with the Bruins top line skating circles around us for 7 games last year. Nylander or no Nylander, it doesn't change the fact that this is not a cup-winning D that's built to last for the playoffs.

Am I an asshole?

I've reached the stage of adulthood where I don't want/need anything for Christmas. It's become a gift card exchange which to me is absolutely pointless. I have no desire to do Secret Santa or any silliness. Have the same conversation over and over. "What do you want for Christmas?" "Dunno. What do you want" I was hoping my small circle of friends would grow out of it but no luck so far.

The only gift I want is seeing my sons reaction Christmas day.

I dont need any material shit. Give it to the less fortunate or something.

Scrooge out!

I'm not first. Oh well, I waited a bit before I looked for this one. It worked. I found it right away. Anyway, my Coyotes won. That's great. My Coyotes are going to be in the finals with my Habs. Great basketball night tonight. I need wins by my Cavs, Nets, and Suns. Well, my birthday is in less than two weeks. I hope my birthday money will come, but who knows if it will. They should all be back to work by now unless some of them are still refusing.

My Coyotes won last night. Great game. Love those Coyotes. They'll be in the finals along with my Habs. Basketball night tonight. I need wins by my Cavs, Nets, and Suns. Well, my birthday is getting closer. I hope my birthday money will come. They're back at work, but there is still a big backlog of mail. It never should have lasted this long. They should have been legislated back a long time ago.

Made the horrific mistake of attending a PuckTalk last night as a favor to a guy who didn't
want to waste his extra ticket. I previously attended a similar event at the end of October
involving the Jay Baruchel "Born Into It" book launch and it was a lot more pleasant (didn't
hurt that one of the participants was a very attractive (female!) sports journalist in sweat
pants or perhaps leggings! In other words, all I want for Chanukkah/Hanukkah is a promise that I never have to read or hear those verboten words "WILLIAM NYLANDER" ever again!!! People into comic books and Sci-Fi/Fantasy have long been pegged with the dreaded NERD tag, but those sports-crazed folks heavily into the MONEYBALL analytics of it all are more than equally worthy of said epithet!! That talk ran for over two hours and then the TTC wang-blocked me from arriving home in time to catch Judd Hirsch guest-starring on Law and Order: SVU. F#$king nylander!!! P.S., said talk also doubled as a live podcast taping. Those Athletic dudes don't have nothin' on Mike!!

So in celebration of the preliminary signing of the USMCA deal, I I really do feel/think that it is
extremely crucial that we round-up whatever current line-up of the Village People is available,
and have them promptly cut an updated version of "YMCA" under that title. Perhaps maybe
even expand the group with a Mountie and a Federale!! Plus, I'd humbly suggest that the best odds
of finding these folks involves hitting up cruise ships (no obvious pun intended!!), retirement homes,
and NFL tailgate parties, the locations where they are most likely to be currently 'performing'!!!

@Matt,

I'm there with you, though I think secret santa can be a reasonable compromise to cut down the number of gifts for a family or larger group. Worst case scenario, I can always use more beer or wine.

I've been anti-stuff for a while now. I don't need anything and I don't want anything. If there's something I need I'll figure out how to get it. We all have too much stuff!

Children excepted, there's no gift exchange of any kind in my life. I've written about this a bunch of times over the years, including here: http://www.torontomike.com/2012/12/we_have_too_much_stuff.html

There is really only one reason that Nylander has not signed with the Leafs. His father, not his agent, is pulling the strings. Just take a look at his father's record of smooth contract negotiations, how up front and upstanding he was with them, and how well he did with them. Sign the kid, then trade him before he becomes a free agent. The team is good enough to be a serious contender and maybe even win The Cup. Who needs a RPITA on the team? Not the Leafs.

@Matt, I agree for the adults, and my office is mostly a bunch of guys , and we don't do anything. Everyone use to give the owner cigars, but he smokes so few now they probably have lost their flavor by the time he got around to smoking them.
My kids get cash, and my immediate family ( other than to my dad) don't gift give.
I think a number of people may be pulling back on their spending this year, as it looks like things are looking uncertain in the Job market.

@Mike: I would love to be able to cycle to work a lot more often than I do/can, which is a handful or two times per year. Maybe if there were shower facilities here (and as a co-owner, I know that is not going to happen) and I did not have to be in at least business casual in the office, or have to run out to see a client on short notice. Will you settle for me now driving a car that averages 65-75% of the fuel consumption of my not close to being a guzzler previous car?

Well, basketball sucked last night. My Cavs got blown out again. They better not get blown out tonight. My Nets almost won, but they blew it in overtime. My Suns lost again. Not good at all. Well, my Habs will win and my Coyotes will win. My Nets also play as well. They better win. I don't want my Cavs to get blown out. Well, I got my birthday money. It came early. It was more than usual. Anyway, it came early. I really needed it. Now I don't have anything to worry about. I talked to the mailman yesterday and he said that they're really not paid much, but the thing is I thought these postal workers make lots of money. At least they're back now.

I think I type the following on behalf of all TM readers: All praise be due to the various higher powers
and deities for ensuring that the postal system's number one fan received their birthday money
exceedingly early. Our very looong local griping nightmare is at last over. Well, until all ten teams
lose tonight and again tomorrow, and then they'll be some other scapegoat/ boogeyman on the

I gave up on Xmas gifts for adults long ago. For many years I sent a gift basket to my mum in Ontario. She passed away last April so that is no more. The only gifts I give now are to my granddaughter, who is six. Other tan that, I let The Lovely decide who gets a gift certificate and for how much. My birthday is at Xmas and it is by my wishes ignored, though The Lovely and I do a small gift exchange on birthdays. My pleasure on Xmas day is to watch my granddaughter and see how happy she is. If I have that, along with everyone in good health, then that is my happy Xmas.

Well, hockey was good last night. My Habs played a great game. 'Awesome. Good to have Shea Weber back, that's for sure, and the Price is right. Also my Coyotes won again. Thing is that their goalies are injured, but they have this awesome new goalie, Aiden Hill. He's awesome. Now you know my Habs and Coyotes are making the finals. Yes, they are doing that. Basketball was not so good. First my Nets lose and then my Cavs lose. Why can't my Cavs ever win anymore? This is really awful. Well, football today. My Browns, Ravens, and Cardinals better win. I need them all to win. Also my Suns are playing today. Come on Suns. Please win.

Just coming up for air now... what a crazy fun blur yesterday was.

Lakeshore Santa Claus Parade
Kid #3's first Timbits class at Rennie Park
San Remo Bakery
Episode 404 of Toronto Mike'd with Jane Stevenson
Nylander signs
Sloan with Elvis

Missed the Leafs and Raps win, but when I got home from a cold and wet ride home from the Phoenix I watched the highlights. Tremendous starts to the season for both teams... so much fun!

December 2, 2018 @ 10:03 AM

Sloan were phenomenal, but fuck that over-capacity venue and the drunken morons dancing with their elbows and backpacks in such a crush.

I watched the Raps squeeze out that win, disappointing win. Every win is good, but we struggle to maintain leads all the time. I laughed a lot with my friend, so the bigger picture is that I am always happy no matter the end result of a Raps game. My brother also drove me out to Hamilton to look at used cars, only to realize it was a rebuilt title, so what a waste of gas. I really owe him the world!

So I have no car, still - first world problems I know!

Yeah, 10cc had at least a whole greatest hits album (or two) worth of fine songs, even if the term greatest hits is used rather charitably as far as success on this side of the pond is concerned. My
personal favourite is "The Things We Do For Love", but the vocals on "I'm Not In Love" were also
very influential on other artists: B. Joel's "Just The Way You Are" and R.E.M.'s "Star Me Kitten" are
two shining examples of said influence. As for 10cc, I also enjoy their songs "Rubber Bullets",
"People In Love" and "The Wall Street Shuffle."

Hi Toronto Mike. I've been a listener to your podcast for some time now. I've noticed in recent episodes that you're perplexed by the Blue Jays radio broadcast not having one unified voice. This was a situation with the Yankees on their radio with Red Barber, Mel Allen, and Phil Rizzutto from 1957-1964. This practice of multiple PBP voices continued on for decades after that and so while that's the old style here's a more recent example from them. The Yanks had both John Sterling and Michael Kay doing that arrangement for 11 years starting in 1991. Hell, Charley Steiner took Kay's place for 3 years after that. It's only been since 2005 that the Yanks have gone with a traditional PBP + Colour arrangement on the radio. So If the Yanks could have multiple PBP guys I think the Jays having 2 or 3 guys handling PBP is more than fine and is actually a throwback to an earlier era of radio broadcasting.

As long as there's a bonafide #1 guy then there's no issue (that guy is clearly Ben Wagner) I will agree with you that Mike Wilner was the Radio Voice in Waiting and he got totally screwed but I think he will eventually get his day to shine.

That's just my Toonie's worth.

My Cavs won last night over my Nets, but now my Cavs are number one, my number one, so I cheer for them no matter what and they won by a couple points. That's great. My Habs and Coyotes both play tonight. Hopefully they will get wins. Remember Habs and Coyotes to the finals. It will happen.

Nope.

There was some recency bias at play, because a few listened to Mike Richard's announcement and a few listened to Acid Test and Andy Kim.

So for some, "cherry picking" meant listening to the most recent ep.

My Cavs lost again. My Nets lost even though they had a 20-point lead. It sucks. Also I have no credit card which also sucks. It had to be canceled because I had a charge on it from something called Pampered Chef. I didn't buy anything from Pampered Chef, but the charge was on there. Anyway, I had to call the bank. The bank had to cancel my credit card. They say three to five business days for a new one. Well, my Tunein Live subscription renews on December 8. Now that my card is canceled, it won't renew. I had to change my account to use my friend's credit card. I need Tunein Live. That's how I listen to games. I need to have Tunein Live. They will automatically cancel if no credit card. Now I have to pay my friend back. Who knows how long the card will take to get here. It may be more than five business days. You never know. This sucks. I wish there was something else they could do other than cancel my card.
