The trade that brought Maloney to the Leafs in 1978 was controversial because they sent popular winger Errol Thompson to Detroit. Thompson scored 43 goals in 1975-76 while the career high for Maloney was 27 goals in both 1974-75 for the Kings and 1975-76 for the Wings. NHL Hockey was very different back then and the Leafs were willing to sacrifice some offense for toughness.

Maloney coached the Leafs for two seasons, but after guiding them to the playoffs and an upset win over the Blackhawks in the first round in 1985-86, he left for Winnipeg after Leaf owner Harold Ballard would not meet his salary demands. He was replaced by the infamous John Brophy.

When I was a kid, I used to hang out at Maple Leaf Gardens with my folks and we became friends with (Banana) Joe Lamantia, the timekeeper at the rink. He used to go to the track, as did my parents, and he recognized us from Fort Erie. Anyway, when there was a shootout during intermission at Marlie games, and they didn't have enough competitors, he got me on the ice to screw up an easy shot from centre ice.

One day, I got a goal, and the prize was a Leaf jersey! He said he'd get whatever name/number I wanted on it. This is when everybody either had a Vaive, Palmateer, Sittler or Salming on theirs, but I chose Dan Maloney. He was tough, got the job done, and was my favourite player. I wore it to a game at the Aud in Buffalo and ran into the other lunatic with a Maloney jersey and we had a laugh over it. "Really underrated player" was the other guy's comment. Totally.

RIP Snowshoes.

In that photo, I think the thing Butch Goring wore on his head looked more like a plastic vegetable colander than a helmet.

Great quip above! Now I seem to be craving some steamed greens as a result, so I guess I know what
I'll be attempting to eat at lunch. I wrote attempt 'cause it is pretty gosh darned nigh on impossible
to get that kind of healthy thing at the kind of greasy lunch places I tend to (over-)frequent!
