Whew! Had trouble finding this!

Go Leafs go!

October 26, 2018 @ 7:54 AM

Cheryl

I'm not first. I had trouble finding this. Well, my Coyotes won. That's great. See, they're heating up. Barfalo beat my Habs though. Yes, Barfalo came back and beat them, but there was no Carey Price. I think Carey Price will play when my Habs play the Bruins. Anyway, Barfalo had to win. My Cavs lost again. Yes, they lost again. That's no good. Why can't they win? Well, apparently postal workers should be back to work in Toronto, but the seucurity guard said there is still no mail. Well, who knows what is going on with fricken Canada Post. They better get their act together soon. I mean come on. I have a birthday coming up on December 12 and how am I supposed to get my birthday money. My birthday is a very important day. It means a lot to me. They shouldn't be on strike so close to my birthday.

Cheryl did you know you were born on the exact same day and year as Bob Barker (December 12 1923)

Congratulations!

Not surprised to hear that Canadians are the most indebted of all nations https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/oecd-debt-1.4415860
Our great leaders have been leading the way with large deficits and the inching up of the overall debt of the country, that have a snowballs chance of ever being paid down. I don't put much stock in all the economists that say our debt in comparison to GDP is low, as we just saw with the Nafta negotiations we could very easily have our economy turned upside down.

@Beatts
Can't fool me with that clever use of your civilian name!! Other famous birthdays on December 12th
include Frank Sinatra's corpse, Mayim Bialik, and Jennifer Connelly's original chesticles, circa that
underrated "Career Opportunities" flick!!! This date really should be a national day of mourning, if
only for the current state of J. Connelly's "career."

Great show, for its time!! Loved me some Jenna von Oy in the latter seasons!!!
I also (strangely?) find Mayim Bialik on BB Theory quite foxy, despite her horrendous warobe!

@Rick
Well, if I'm being honest, Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) is my favourite, but every time I see re-runs
from the first three seasons, I openly weep at the loss of both Kaley Cuoco's original nose and her curvier body. Not a fan at all of her current overly-toned incarnation. Just one Aspie's opinion, folks!!

H.o.E.

Walking past a particular 'poutinerie' outlet reminded of their Yonge-Dundas Square event a couple of weeks back, where one guy in the Kiss tribute act was introducing the others, and after naming the drummer making sure to point out he was fill-in temp for the usual guy. Was that really necessary? In the crowd of about 100 people there wandering around and maybe partially paying attention, was anyone thinking to themselves, "Hey! That drummer in the costume, wig, and Kabuki makeup looks and plays in a very slightly different way from the last I saw them. As a rabid aficionado of Kiss tribute bands, I say that Kiss impersonator is an imposter!"

October 26, 2018 @ 11:12 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@H.o.E.
The regular drummer for that Kiss tribute act resides in Nashville (this was mentioned at
their performance at The Taste of the Kingsway). Probably wasn't worth the cost of airfare
for him to fly up here to play for some free Poutine and the 'amusement' of a small crowd
of randoms, not to mention, the very colourful local street population!! And it's not like the
basic percussive prowess of Peter Criss is that hard to recreate!!! (Mind you, not sure how
many of their studio albums he actually played on in full, despite what Wikipedia's illustrious
Kiss Army of compilers would have us believe!!)

Hey Rick C In Oakville: Not sure if that logic works about dismissing Economists. By that standard Doctors don't know what they're talking about in regards to smoking being bad for you, because my uncle is 85 and has smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day since he was 15....

Canadians piled on debt by buying houses they won't be able to afford should interest rates go up by 3 points. They also used lines of credit with low interest rates to get stuff they don't need, but rather just want. There isn't a direct correlation between government debt accumulation and household debt accumulation. No one sits their buying a house that will make them house poor and says "If the government can go into debt why can't I". For the % that had to go into debt beacuse they couldn't afford to pay bills that's a whole other problem.

I read an article the other week that stated if the majority of Canadians had a hiccup in pay of only 1 week they wouldn't be able to make ends meet and pay bills. i don't have the exact number but it was the majority of Canadians and That's effing scary

October 26, 2018 @ 11:51 AM

Ben V

@ Rick C: Should have added he's smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day since he was 15 and has a clean bill of health with no respiratory issues.

What do you guys think about the Jays new manager, Charlie Montoyo?

I don't know much about him, but I like that the Jays hired a bilingual manger as it's pretty important to have a guy who has a good handle on both English and Spanish in MLB in 2018.

Although, I am surprised they went as old as they did with the hire, thought they would go with a much younger guy than 53 considering the long rebuild they are in store for.

October 26, 2018 @ 1:07 PM

dale

We will see how Montoyo does early on next season. I think a good choice with his previous resume.

However, did the Jays even consider bringing Cito Gaston back for 3rd-4th time, great with young players & fluent In Spanish also? LOL as he must be like Bob Cole close to 100 years old.

October 26, 2018 @ 1:32 PM

Urooj Islam

@dale

Haha, you KNOW they're going to somehow end up hiring either Cito Gaston or John Gibbons again. The lack of creativity in this team's front office or the last two decades when it comes to managers is amusing.

Maybe Cito Gaston as manager and John Gibbons as bench coach in 2021?

October 26, 2018 @ 2:32 PM

I think Montoyo is the right choice at this time. We dove deeper into this topic off the top of today's Hebsy on Sports. I'm good with the hire.

The MAGA Bomber's van is a sight to behold. Scary shit. If I were Michael Moore I wouldn't be checking my mail for a while.

Speaking of mail, there's literally a cheque in the mail for TMDS and I haven't had mail delivered in a while. You don't miss the mail until you're waiting on a cheque.

My Nets lost. They should have won, but they blew it. I have a big sports night tonight. I need my Habs, Coyotes, Cavs, and Suns to all win. They have to all win. Come on and do it. Well, I know my birthday is December 12. Not everyone can email money. My aunt can't because she doesn't have internet. Who knows. The strike could hit Toronto again. There doesn't seem to be an end in sight, but what does Justin Trudeau care? He does nothing.

Money for Nothing and no Cheques for Free!! Well past time for Dire Straits to reform and then
immediately hit the studio to record an updated version of that MTV/MuchMusic/Classic Rock
Radio staple!!! Sure do hope Canada Post gets its collective A into G in time for December 12!!
Hmm, maybe someone can track down Billy Bragg at some union hall or another, and perhaps
he could record a little ditty as well?!? Murray McLauchalan? Buffy Sainte-Marie? Bieber?!? Or
better yet, "Weird Al" could simply re-release his classic '83 jam "The Check's In The Mail!"

Looks like that MAGA Bomber was described by a former lawyer as having a "lesser IQ" which probably comes as a shock to a lot of us here. Speaking of which, Doug Ford's "Open For Business" signs are going up soon. It would be a shame not to honour Ford's high school legacy by scrawling the letter D in front of that slogan. Not that I condone vandalism of course.

October 27, 2018 @ 9:26 AM

bsmntdwllr73

Fascinated to hear that the (alleged) Maga Bomber (wouldn't want to violate his right to a fair

It's bullshit how idiots can continuously hide behind the veil of anonymity to bully others. Not just this site either (although anonymass' constantly mocking Cheryl was a douche move, and this notbsmntdwlr73 who thinks he's the most clever mf'er around. What a dolt). Notbsmntdwlr73 is notfnny18. I'd say more, but cool kids think they're cool with their anonymity, and wouldn't learn a thing anyways. The funny/horrible thing is that it's probably an adult doing it (no offence Mike, but I'm willing to bet your blog doesn't fare well in the 14 - 24 demographic)

I (finally) caught up on some episodes, and found it interesting when Jamar was talking about how much apologizing we do. It reminded me of a time a while back in a McDonald's drive thru on a Monday morning. Me and this guy both started driving to the merging part after we'd made our orders. I start to go first, but he keeps pushing like he gets to go. He starts screaming so I roll down my window to ask him what his problem was. He calls me an asshole for thinking I got to go first, and I said I did. He yelled 'what, you think you ordered first or something?', and I said I had. He was like oh, well go ahead then. Even though he was screaming and swearing at me, I ended up apologizing for the confusion for some reason. And, I was right. I ordered first because my coffee and muffin were right there ready for me at the window!

Is the best selling album of all time really the Eagles Greatest Hits album?

It's kind of weirdly amazing that a Greatest Hits album holds that title rather than a regular album.

@mdoucette77, as I approach my 60's and driving about 65-75K a year, I have found I am just letting these things slide. If someone feels they got one up on me in traffic or a McDonalds line, so be it. Many years ago in Scarborough a guy was shot in the drive through (Kingston and Lawrence)because he asked a couple of guys to move their drug deal away from his kids in the car.
@Sid V, I think we had a similar discussion a few years ago, about my Scottish Grandmothers schooling me about keeping your finances to what you can afford.
Debt is going to drag individuals and government down, and under the current climate the government isn't going to be able to raise taxes to cover the costs. It has to be paid in someones lifetime, and it doesn't look like it will be in mine.
Having paid around 12 % for a mortgage in the late 80's, I am aware of how the debt can get ahead of you.

Well, hockey was good last night. My Habs won. Great shutout by Carey Price. Great road win. My Habs are great. How about those Coyotes. Another great win. That's wonderful. Habs and Coyotes to the finals. Basketball was ho hum though. My Cavs lost another one. When will my Cavs ever win? It's terrible, really awful. My Cavs are 0 and 6. Will they ever win again ever? My Suns also lost again. They only have one win. Well, who knows where the postal strike will hit next week. I wouldn't be surprised if they hit Toronto again. First, there were actual negotiations. Mike and I had a few phone calls where we agreed to the ground rules. For example, I'd only do it if I could read Cynthia Mulligan's full victim impact statement (the one posted to FB, not read aloud in court) at the onset.

So Mike was booked, and ground rules were set, then I think Mike's lawyer knocked some sense into him because he called it off at the last minute.

That's right. My aunt has no email. The money has to come by cheque. I may not get my birthday money. My birthday is very important to me. Well, they're out in Winnipeg now. They're going to run out of new places to strike, so I wouldn't be surprised if they hit here. My Ravens and Browns both lost yesterday. My Cardinals squeaked out a win. My Nets and Suns both lost yesterday. My Cavs fired their coach, Tyronn Lue. They fired him just like that. Now I'm really worried about my Cavs. Are they ever going to win a fricken game this season? Who knows, but I'm really worried.

I'm glad TM did not end up getting Mr. Bullard on tbh, because I don't think he deserves any more air time in regards to that situation. I know Mike would have been classy and able to conduct a world class interview, but yuck.

Cheryl - I feel bad for my boy Tyronn. He did not deserve the axe, they should have done that in the summer time. As it is, we all knew they would implode after LeBron left. I don't even think Ty coached much, I think LeBron exercised a lot of creative control. And I also think the entire situation last season made Ty so sick he needed time off, I'd be super anxious too.

I doubt many people are noticing the supposed postal disruptions. Has anyone actually been getting mail delivered every day for the last couple of decades? I've lived in apartment buildings for most of the last 20 years, and it's always been two or three days a week. And of course in recent years there's really almost nothing to be delivered except junk mail and maybe a small package if you've ordered it.
Speaking of apartment buildings, why are there always people waiting to be let into the door to the lobby? I repeatedly see the same people who must live there and therefore presumably must have a key, and I don't understand how they would leave without it since you have to lock your own apartment door on the way out. And if you don't live there, use your phone to call the person you're seeing as you arrive, or the thing on the wall in the entrance that is there precisely for that purpose.

October 30, 2018 @ 10:44 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@H.o.E.
Many of the 'interesting' characters who live in my crappy building have various folks illegally
squatting with them. A lot of yelling from the street to throw the keys down, banging on windows,
as well as going through ground-level windows due to a lack of keys (guess they can't afford
the replacement fee or it happens too often). Friendly reminder: Don't do crack!!!

October 30, 2018 @ 10:56 AM

H.o.E. - I have been seeing my aunt every Friday (or almost) for about 2 years. I am there usually around the same time, but before taking her spare key and fob, I would call up or possibly wait for someone to get the door. Some people are just frequent visitors, or they know someone will be around so they don't bother with a key but it's weird to always leave home with no key, you're right.

To go off on a tangerine (as Jim Richards says it) with something related to songwriters, I just saw an article about the New Horizons space probe that will be flying past a distant solar system object on New Years Day. When it went by Pluto in 2015, it was strange to learn that it had taken an astrophysicist to come up with the intellectual lyrics for songs like "Fat Bottomed Girls" and "Tie Your Mother Down".

@H.o.E,
Wasn't aware that Jim Vallance(!) was mentioned all that frequently on here, aside from that keen
gentleman who responded to my (London) Quireboys namedropping in the Lou Schizas KOTJ
thread yesterday. Mr. Higgs' drum performance on that first Prism album, as well as his ace '70s
songwriting strongly goes to show that he had the right stuff long before the Bryan Adams
team up. Plus, he guested as Mr. Adams' drummer during the promo for the latter's "Get Up"
album in 2015 (half hour etalk special). Where would Aerosmith and all sorts of other now largely forgotten hair farmers have been without his assistance in the late eighties and earlie nineties?!?

Has anyone caught the Ann Rohmer ads for that Window company on CP24 yet? Was a bit jarring to see her in an infomercial type of thing on there this afternoon.

@H.o.E.

I got mail today for the first time in a week. If it wasn't a cheque, I doubt I would have cared.

I live where my mail is delivered to a community postal box whereby all neighbors pick up their mail.
My box is across the street from where I live & I see CONSTANLY people throwing junk mail back into the box where outgoing mail is supposed to go.

NO WONDER WHY CDA. POST IS ON STRIKE having to sort through all mail & then discard junk mail.
Time & employees cost $.

@dale

The city or municipality should be providing blue boxes for community mailboxes for all the junk mail. My community mailbox has had one for years.

Still, putting the junk mail back in the mailbox is pretty weird. You live around a lot of weirdos.

Finally, my Cavs won a game. That's great that they won. My Coyotes also won so that's really awesome. My Habs didn't do great though. Carey Price wasn't so great. Oh well, they'll still be in the finals with my Coyotes. Well, postal strike is still on. They apparently have a special mediator. Well, doesn't seem like this special mediator isn't doing anything. Well, as long as Toronto stays working, it's okay, but who knows. They very well could go out again.

October 31, 2018 @ 7:18 AM

Mike you've never heard the expression "bad juju" before ? Same as bad karma...

October 31, 2018 @ 8:17 AM

Beatts - thank you for the clarification! :)

TM - yes, i don't want any bad stuff coming back my way because i put the story on to the Internet! I did tell some friends though just to share the story and get it out of my system, it is a doozy. also, i am sorry that Stafford dissed you yesterday over a simple question, one that many interviewers would ask someone who was in Lou's position.

May I be so bold as to suggest that bad juju does not exist? :)

Anyone else pick up Jeff Wood's Records and rock stars audio book he just released ?

15 hours of interviews and Jeff's story about working in the radio business. Makes for great listening on the commute to work. Best voice in radio next to Mike Boon.

Best thing about Halloween (and just when exactly did this become a day seemingly treasured more
by Peter Pan-esque adults than their kids, if they even have any?!?): The unassailable fact that Warren
Zevon will be heard on terrestrial radio, even if it is only that one particular track. Better than nothing, I suppose! Real shame that Lee Ho Fooks has now closed down. Not that I ever actually made it there
to enjoy a big dish of beef chow mein!!!

@Beatts
Love Jeff Woods program. Never read his actual book 'cause the local library system spent the cash
on additional Bieber 8-Tracks instead!! Never miss an episode of his radio program, that is, unless an extra special episode of Shark Tank is airing concurrently.

@Mike
Just saw that gentle Twitter storm regarding M. Stafford calling you 'some turd in a basement.'
I take great offense to that!!! Sure, you operate TMDS out of the very classy lower part of your house,
but I'd like to think that if that particular label applied to anyone, then it would most certainly
be YOURS TRULY!! Perhaps I should now quickly change my online handle to bsmntTURDdwllr73 in some kind of Bizarro tribute to the bitter online rantings of a former Jeopardy! combatant?!?

Strangely I thought of that song when looking at Google maps for the census address of a late 1800s residence of an ancestor, which it displayed to be in "Mayfair, London", although it was apparently called "St. George in the East" at the time, when I suppose neighbourhood jurisdictions may have been more likely to be defined by church parishes. And I think they may have lived above a tobacconist/coffee shop they ran, not a Chinese food restaurant.
A few years back, I heard a TV sports commentator say Canada was in the "Lawyers, Guns and Money" group for World Cup qualifying, when they had to visit Havana and Honduras.

I'm not one of those adults who gets excited by Halloween, which I've always thought of as being for kids under 12, not adults or the groups of 14-year-olds who show up at your door trick-or-treating at 10 p.m. without costumes (though I suppose they could claim to be Beavis and Butt-Head).
In the last couple of years I have seen a few dogs being walked in costumes, though not quite as inventive as this one.

@H.o.E.
Obviously the majority of Warren Zevon's' fans throughout his lifetime were dudes employed by
the media in some manner who were getting their records for free, hence the occasional mentions/nods in unexpected places!! My favourite WZ tribute is that mid nineties film "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead" with Andy Garcia, in which he allowed the use of his song title on the condition that the original song be played during the closing credits. P.S., I once read that at one point in his career, all of his albums needed to be vetted by the U.S. ATF bureau due to their somewhat skewed lyrical content!!

TM - something from my past reappeared in an unexpected way on Monday afternoon. A few years ago I would have cried my eyes out (and my stomach still gets sick when the topic comes up) but Monday I just let things slide and tried to give out good energy. Long story short - someone claiming to be the ex girlfriend of my ex boyfriend, contact me for closure and to understand things.

The funniest part of the now infamous Mike Stafford tweet is that he doesn't even realize that he is basically indirectly criticizing himself and all of the old "play it safe" media in this city.

Toronto Mike had the discipline, drive and the balls to start his own thing which eventually became the unofficial media podcast of this city. Literally anyone in the industry could have done a similar podcast, they certainly had better contacts than Mike did, but didn't want to take a chance. Now they whine about someone who did take that chance and established himself from the ground up. Lame.

All of the recent layoffs just make it more apparent how risk averse old media is, they will suck on the teat of a declining media company for decades then claim to be blind-sighted when they are let go, all the while doing nothing to create something for themselves outside of it.

Well, my Nets squeaked out a win, but my Suns lost and lost big. My Habs better win tonight. Come on Habs. Also my Cavs better win again tonight. I don't celebrate Halloween anymore. I'm not a kid and I don't have kids. This special mediator is not so special if he can't settle the postal strike. It will go on through my birthday, you'll see. I won't get any card with money in it this year. Stupid unions. I really really hate unions and I would never ever vote NDP.

November 1, 2018 @ 6:54 AM

bsmntdwllr73

I really enjoyed the Randy Bachman/Fred Turner group Union, Toni Child's "Union" album
and the multi-line-up Yes collaborative release "Union." So, in other words, not all Unions
are a bad thing. Just puttin' that out there!!

November 1, 2018 @ 9:44 AM

Beatts

Cheryl you say you're not a kid anymore so you don't celebrate Halloween but you still expect birthday money from Relatives ?

bsmntdwllr73 I caught a really good documentary on Randy Bachman a few days ago. Was a real straight arrow and bucked the norm of the typical 70's rock star lifestyle. Most likely the reason there was so much tension between him and Burton Cummings and the cause of their break up. His wife divorcing him took a very hard toll on him also. He strikes me as a bit of a task master though. Even Fred Turner seemed to be sick of his shit at times.

November 1, 2018 @ 10:03 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Beatts
Fred Turner was one handsome side of beef in his prime!! (Probably should have kept that as an
interior monologue!!!). As for Mr. Bachman's alleged tough task mastering, it would seem to me
that BTO would have basically been Turner Overdrive playing the Winnipeg equivalent of those
Sturgis bike rallies if not for Randy's melodic gifts!

Going out on a limb here, but... today's Sunshine Girl is named "Krimszon Laice", soooo I'm pretty
sure that she posed under an alias. Another one of the Sun's throwback, rougher-looking older
models. Might it be time to finally put this long-past-its-prime feature to bed?!? Plus, the unmissed
Sunshine Boy feature was long-ago quietly put-down, allegedly over a lack of viably attractive submissions, so perhaps we have now reached the nadir in cheesecake model availability? Boy, I sure do miss those free-flowing days of fresh-faced 'horseback riding enthusiasts' from Quebec!!

November 1, 2018 @ 10:41 AM

jj

bsmntdwllr73 - LMAO at her using an alias. I remember in high school, a guy in our class brought the Sun in and was like here's my sister! :P

Beatts - candy does not pay the bills, but the money from relatives sure does ! my relatives don't give me $$, but before she got married, my friend's grandmother gave her money on the most random occasions haha.

November 1, 2018 @ 11:52 AM

And those oh-so-clever aliases are usually just one of the more enjoyable reminders/remainders
from their glory dazed (!!) of yore at long-defunct peeler bars!!
