Do you notice something different-looking in the image above from Oshawa? The countdown clock is displayed during the "walk" signal. A flashing "don't walk" one is shown with five seconds to go, which becomes solid at zero when the number display disappears.
This makes more sense to me than the set-up I see in Toronto and elsewhere, which I think might have been designed by Beavis & Butt-Head (uh, huh huh huh, let's make people run across the street and get hit by cars).

Happy Thanksgiving all

October 5, 2018 @ 7:22 AM

I am not first. How come a couple people beat mme? Oh well, my Coyotes lost. That's no good. They got shut out and they lost. They'll win tomorrow. The Indians are winning the World Series. Yes, they are winning it all and the party will be the first Saturday after the World Series. Well, my Ravens and my Browns play each other on Sunday. My Brrowns should have won last weekend, but didn't. Now they have to play my Ravens. Someone will win. My Cardinals also better win on Sunday.

October 5, 2018 @ 7:46 AM

I beat you Cheryl because I'm a leafs fan. You should be used to it :)

I noticed the ugly crane thing that seemed to be a permanent fixture on top of the L-Tower beside the Sony Centre is finally gone. Supposedly it has been replaced by another one that partly retracts, but I could barely see anything when I looked.
The schedules of events (which include appearances by your podcast interviewees Colin James, and Splash 'n' Boots) for venues like the Sony Centre, Roy Thomson Hall, Danforth Music Hall, and Queen Elizabeth Theatre look crowded, now with Massey Hall closed for renovation, though I don't know if they're any more busy than usual.

Normally I post the Open Mike when I get home from dropping off the two little ones, but today I did it before because I had to jet with my oldest to a doctors appointment in North York.

Typed from beautiful North York.

October 5, 2018 @ 8:50 AM

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

H.o.E. - I gotta say, no one makes pedestrians run across streets but themselves! If I am in a rush, I do not care about the countdown, and it is clear a lot of pedestrians don't, unfortunately. But maybe the type in Oshawa would work out here!

October 5, 2018 @ 9:04 AM

TPOH was amazing last night -- tiny venue, Supermarket in Kensington. Managed to see five of their reunion shows now; I never got a chance in the 90s before they broke up.

I didn't realise until later that the familiar-looking figure talking to Moe after the show was Mark Hebscher.

Next up is Social Distortion!

You just might have to start up architecture/construction categories on the home page's category section!!

October 5, 2018 @ 10:41 AM

I could be a contributor to the Architecture/Construction categories seen as it's my field of expertise and the fact there are no male modelling categories yet.

Bad idea... I can't even say "architecture" properly.

October 5, 2018 @ 11:08 AM

Might need your breadth of design knowledge and expertise in the very near future when I go
shopping for the proper materials to construct a long-lasting cardboard condo. Would probably
have to Skype with you from a Cyber Cafe (still a thing?) in advance, as I sadly lack the technology
and technique to do so from the field!! As for male modelling, having previously seen your handsome
visage, may I suggest a merciless cease and desist order to Brian Posehn for copyright trademark
infringement post haste?!?

Sad to be packing up my short sleeve shirts, find full length shirt sleeves annoying. Keeping my universal beige dress pants though, good for all seasons!

The federal Liberals took a hit this week with Terri Lynn McClinitic and Wetlaufer getting the soft "club Fed" treatment. Their defense in Parliament was pretty pathetic, given the horrendous crimes these 2 committed, and the fact they are no where near any chance of being released in the near future.

Friday Musings:
I've followed TSN's great stories about Joe Murphy written by Rick Westhead. Tragic overall & hopefully Joe gets the help he needs.

Jays season was a bust but hopefully with NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK next will make a huge impact.

Cut my grass today in a winter coat & last week in a tee shirt, so much for those who don't beleive in global warming. Cool this weekend & then +35 with humid factor next Tues/Wed. That's fall weather for ya.

Leafs this year will be same as last. Too much Hype. Nylander is playing hardball & can see Marner & Matthews doing to same next year with their contracts.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL & enjoy the long weekend.

Will be meeting David Shoalts today signing his new book at Forsters Book Garden in Bolton, both our home towns.
Lots to discuss with David. Memories.

October 6, 2018 @ 12:06 AM

My Indians lost. They did not play well at all. That was no good, but hey, they will win it in four or five. Remember the World Series. They will win the World Series and the party will be the first Saturday after. Well, my Habs and Coyotes will win tonight. Then tomorrow is some football. My Ravens and Cardinals will win tomorrow. I don't think the Browns will win, but you never know. My Indians will even up the series today. That's why it will be in four or five.

October 6, 2018 @ 7:07 AM

I must say that one of the (few) hidden pleasures/treasures in Parkdale (for me) is an ongoing
public display of 'talent' I'd like to call LCBO Idol: Ya know, in which a loose core of gentlemen set
up shop in front of what was once formerly a shady funeral home (now that's Ironic, Alanis!!) and
put on somewhat lengthy sets of some of the most tuneless music you will ever have the displeasure
of being aurally assaulted with!! Kindly imagine, if you will, broken strings, improperly tuned guitars
and pitchy vocals that even the neighbourhood's stray dogs couldn't tolerate!! Even better are those
ace A cappella crooners who fancy themselves as the next Lou Gramm or perish the thought, Johnny
Cougar!! Come to think of it, most of these characters are quite fond of singing the blues (well, I
guess it goes with their hardscrabble lifestyles!!), but I don't think that the ghosts of Howlin' Wolf
and Muddy Waters have anything to worry about...YET!! My personal favourite from this Motley
Crue is a fella who actually used to be the superintendent of my building, at least until he got
fired for stealing from the tenants!! Mercifully I was spared his thieving ways, but I guess crooning
for your liquid lunch sure beats stealin'!!! And at least most of these performers are spending their
hard-earned wages at their work venue. I guess it is kinda cool that the money stays in the community!!

Blind Dave

I don't know what they have in Toronto anymore, but here the walk signal turns to a flashing red with a countdown. The timing is based on a normal person walking. Even though I am near on blind, I actually move fairly quickly. My problem is I cannot see across the street, so I have to look up and over my shoulder at the light behind me.

We have gone from a hot, dry summer to a cold, rainy fall. he ground desperately needed the moisture, but as every day ticks by I feel there will be no Indigenous Peoples' Summer. That's a pity because I have moved my long sleeves to the front of my closet and the short sleeves to the back.

Where is Angry Spike?

October 6, 2018 @ 1:50 PM

Pretty sure Angry Spike is starring in another TM thread right about now, but may I suggest
listening to the classic Elvis Costello album "Spike" from 1989, or a choice Spike Jones throwback
jam like "Der Fuehrer's Face" from 1943? That might put a smile on even the saddest sad sack's
sullen face. Think I'll take my own advice and hit Youtube up immediately!

October 6, 2018 @ 1:59 PM

Wow...had no idea exterminators were so expensive. I have bed bugs in my house, how the hell I got them I have no clue, could've been from anywhere, but this really blows. They want 1300 bucks to treat my house which is outrageous. They got you by the balls though I guess. Might have found another alternative though which I'm gonna try first. The heat is supposed to kill them so my buddy is gonna lend me a couple propane heaters and I'm going to crank up my furnace for 2 or 3 days. Hopefully that'll kill them all and then I can disinfect my house. Hoping this works cause I sure as hell ain't got 1300 bucks to dish out.
I had no idea how much clothes, towels, bed sheets, fabric, etc that I had till I bagged everything up. To say I'm stressed is an understatement.

Pumpkin pie is one of the Top 5 greatest human inventions.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone, have a good and safe weekend.

October 6, 2018 @ 4:22 PM

@Blind Dave --
The problem here in Toronto, and anywhere else I've seen the same arrangement, is that people are supposed to stop and not start to cross the intersection once the flashing red hand appears, but it seems almost no one understands this, or they just completely ignore it. While the flashing red hand is telling people to stop, they conflictingly also see the countdown as telling them hurry up at the same time, so they instinctively run across the road while the flashing red hand is telling them not to.
I think it would make more sense to have a countdown for how much time is left for the "Walk" signal, which I think people would more instinctively understand and probably would not require the instructions to be posted for people to read and understand just to do something as simple as crossing the road (and as I said, seem to be almost entirely ignored anyway).

@jason: They can hitch hike on your clothing(or a guest to your house) and multiply like cockroaches. This has always been my fear with staying in hotels for work acouple of times a month. Even high end hotels are not immune. Good Luck on the extermination.

October 6, 2018 @ 5:26 PM

Jason from Sudbury

@Rick C: Yeah I know. When I found out I had them I literally sat at my computer and googled shit for about 2 hours and stressed myself out even more than I already was. I've never dealt with shit like this before and at first I really didn't know what the hell to do. That's the shitty thing about bed bugs though, they don't discriminate. Black, white, rich, poor, it doesn't matter.
Anyway...extermination starts tomorrow. Here's hoping it'll work.

I give her tons of credit though, for religiously giving updates on her teams even when they lose key games or have putrid seasons. I know people that act like "what's a baseball?" when the teams they never shut up about lose.

October 6, 2018 @ 9:31 PM

2 games played at home, 2 BS performances by the Leafs against 2 of the worst teams in the league.
Tomorrow they play another crap team (Chicago) who are in a semi rebuild & missed the playoffs last year. It's up to Sparks to show his true colours.
Willie must be upping his cap request game by game.
Happy Thanksgiving all.

October 6, 2018 @ 10:24 PM

Ha ha, Habs win and Leafs lose. How about those Habs. They beat Shittsburgh and that is so wonderful in their own home. Carey Price is his usual self. The Price is right. My Coyotes didn't win though. That's no good. My Indians lost again. I don't know why they had to lose, but hey, three games left. They go home and play at home tomorrow. Indians are going to win the World Series. You see, they are just warming up, getting used to things. We're having a party first Saturday after the Indians win the World Series. They'll do it. Believe me. You have to trust me. Today is football. My Ravens will beat my Browns and my Cardinals will beat the Niners.

Shittsburgh? Yeah I kinda like it actually lol.

Hmm, I kind of like the the trash talking, potty mouth Cheryl, she is definitely passionate about her sports.

Your World Series cake is burning in the oven & you may have to tell your baker its OVER DONE, sorry Cleveland.

October 8, 2018 @ 12:16 AM

Well, my Browns did beat my Ravens. Oh well. I like them both. Anyway, it will be my Browns or my Ravens in the superbowl. My Cardinals also won. That's great. Cardinals and Ravens or Browns. I'm having a Superbowl party as well. What do you mean my Indians are done? My Indians are winning the World Series because they will win today and then two more games. It will happen. You talk like it's over, but it's not over.

October 8, 2018 @ 6:56 AM

I hope the Brewers make it to the world series. Really enjoyed watching them play!

October 8, 2018 @ 5:06 PM

I'm with you, Matt, would be cool to see the Brewers make a run but chances are that it's going to be more of the same ie Dodgers, Astros and Red Sox/Yankees.

October 8, 2018 @ 9:05 PM

Jason from Sudbury - Sorry to hear about the bedbugs :'( I hope the heat works...

October 8, 2018 @ 9:53 PM

This year if the yankees win, at least Happ gets a ring which I can live with. Red Sox have them on the ropes though

October 8, 2018 @ 9:56 PM

Former Jays on the Brewers include Eric Thames, Curtis Granderson and hitting coach Darnell Coles, while the Dodgers have John Axford along with Turner Ward (hitting coach) and Chris Woodward (3rd base coach).

October 8, 2018 @ 11:01 PM

There's no World Series party. It's canceled. My Indians lost. There is no party. There will be a Superbowl party though. It will be the first Saturday after the Superbowl. My Browns, Ravens, or Cardinals will win it. Then in the summer there will be a Stanley Cup party and a basketball party. Just because there is no World Series party, there will be parties. My Indians lost. That's no good. They were leading 1 to 0 and 2 to 1. They collapsed.

October 9, 2018 @ 7:03 AM

Wow, I guess that's MEC quality. You should also be wearing cycling gloves! Would have protected your hands!! And don't forget those shaved legs!! Scabs and leg hair are not a good thing! ;)

October 9, 2018 @ 9:46 AM

ooops! I'm the only one that could have made that comment!

October 9, 2018 @ 9:48 AM

Three things: Long holiday weekends suck, especially when your (MINE!!) one channel TV universe repeatedly shows you stories about family Thanksgiving celebrations!! Heck, even the annual Scott Mission coverage had me feeling down, 'cause at least those folks weren't alone!! Worst of all, my precious libraries were on lockdown for close to 72 hours and that's what really hurt the most. Now I'll just have to steel myself up well in advance for the Christmas slowdown a couple of months from now. Ugh!!!

Also, I saw that Venom flick on Sunday and while it was better than I anticipated, I would have probably enjoyed it more if I hadn't previously read far too many comics involving the title character!!
Always nice to see a long-haired(!) Michelle Williams, even if she was somewhat slumming it
for a big studio pay cheque!! However, her role is a largely thankless one, give or take a few
pertinent scenes in the back end of the film.

And finally, we are barely ten days into the month and already I find myself being endlessly
propositioned for both change and cigarettes from my so-called Parkdale neighbours. Green
Day might have sung about their infamous "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" back in the day,
but ME, I find myself strolling down a "PROMENADE of POVERTY" on a far too frequent basis.
If only I could play guitar and had the classic blues voice of a departed sharecropper's son, well, then, think I'd go ahead and write myself a little song 'bout it!!

October 9, 2018 @ 10:11 AM

@Al The Royal Pain
Congratulations to both You and the rest of The Royal Pains for that tremendous musical
achievement. Pretty safe to say that there will still be no AC/DC on the setlist?!?!

October 9, 2018 @ 10:44 AM

Al The Royal Pain

Pretty safe. Thanks @bsmntdwllr73.

The following weekend we're playing a rare city show...although it's east of Yonge, so I doubt we can get Mike to come out, but if you're in the Pape & Danforth area, you should totally come out!

October 9, 2018 @ 11:28 AM

@Al the Royal Pain
Where are you playing?

October 9, 2018 @ 11:36 AM

@Al The Royal Pain
Pape is obviously a much easier location for me to get to, but I don't know how comfortable
I'd be going to a happening Friday night gig on my own. Though I shall take it under serious consideration!! Would mean sacrificing a scintillating episode of Blue Bloods (loves me some geezer Selleck!!) as I'm no longer able to catch up on my many TV shows at the library. Bastards!!!

October 9, 2018 @ 12:43 PM

Al The Royal Pain

Fair enough. I'd love to see you there, but completely understand.

How about this, if you do show up, you won't hear ACDC, but you will probably hear Van Halen. I don't know if that's a selling point for you...but it should be. ;)

October 9, 2018 @ 1:20 PM

@Al The Royal Pain
Well, it's not often that anyone actually looks forward to my attendance at an event, so now I really
do feel like I should attend!! As for VH, just as long at it involves tracks from the one and only definitive Gary Cherone era of the band. Truly underrated.....Just F'in with you. DLR all the way!!!

October 9, 2018 @ 1:33 PM

Cheryl's streak of picking horrible teams to win Championships is intact I see :)

October 9, 2018 @ 1:56 PM

The Royal Pains are officially booked for Cheryl's cancelled world series party

October 9, 2018 @ 1:58 PM

Just imagine how horrific it would be if I started giving sports picks!! I'd be in cement shoes by the
end of week one... not that I would even have too much of a problem with that worst(?) case scenario!! Darn, I was really looking forward to that particular World Series Party! In Bizzaro World the party could still go on, as Superman's diminished capacity pseudo-doppelganger would most definitely celebrate his losing team!!!

October 9, 2018 @ 2:10 PM

Urooj Islam

"The Royal Pains are officially booked for Cheryl's cancelled world series party"

Maybe Al and Cheryl can reschedule for the Super Bowl party or the Stanley Cup party or the ever popular "I don't know what to call the NBA Championship or know the name of the NBA Championship trophy but I still want to throw a party for it so I will just call it basketball" party.

October 9, 2018 @ 3:18 PM

@Urooj Islam that party name is a little on the long side, perhaps an acronym would help. Hey everyone, we're happy to play at Cheryl's IDKWTCTNBACOKTNOTNBACTBISWTTAPFISIWJCIB party!

@Al The Royal Pain
Ah, now I get it. You just summed up the gist of Mr. Islam's previous comment in a lengthy
acronym. Good stuff!!

October 9, 2018 @ 3:29 PM

Rob J

I've said it before but I give her all the kudos for diligently providing game results even when her heroes have lousy seasons or lose tough playoff games. Too many fans who are insufferable during good times suddenly develop a convenient case of amnesia when their teams crap the bed.

October 9, 2018 @ 3:31 PM

@Rob J
Oh, so you mean like a lot of Blue Jays fans throughout most of the past 20 years?!?
As for Cheryl's eternal Cleveland fandom, at least the fictional Indians squad in Major League
2 made a good run for it!! And ya definitely gotta give it up for/to the hardcore Pro-Line fanatics, whose previous long-term love for the Leafs could never be soured, even by the threat of perennial personal bankruptcy!!!

October 9, 2018 @ 3:45 PM

Rob J

I learned my lesson and absolutely will not mention any specific fan base as examples! Though you are certainly free to draw your own conclusions.

October 9, 2018 @ 3:51 PM

@Rob J
I have never been a sports fan, but as a longtime comic book enthusiast, I'm pretty familiar with
fan-boy/girl griping, 'boy'cotts, complaints, etc.!! It's human nature to try and tear down the things
we supposedly love when they have the audacity to disappoint us!! Cheryl might truly be the
greatest and most mature of us all due to her steadfast tried and true belief/fandom. Then again,
it also helps that she has many teams in many leagues to root for. At least there is always someone
to cheer for on the winning side, and perhaps sometimes even more. Maybe a lesson in that
for us all to learn from. Hmmm, suddenly I've got a serious hankering for some fancy cake...

October 9, 2018 @ 3:58 PM

Getting back to the Elton John topic from the last couple of Open Mikes, I can't remember tickets for anything going on sale more than a year before it happened. I'll bet there's at least a few people buying tickets who are confused and think the shows are this month, as Ticketmaster and other sites that list these things are not in the habit of having to specify the year shows will occur.

October 9, 2018 @ 4:07 PM

Rob J

I'm always up for learning new lessons...and I'm definitely always up for some fancy cake, celebratory or otherwise!

October 9, 2018 @ 4:11 PM

What's gonna happen to Cheryl's Chief Wahoo cake? Re decorate it for the Cleveland Browns Super bowl party? If the Browns don't win must be re iced for the Habs or Coyotes NHL party. By then, there will be more icing on the cake than actual cake.

Cheryl has to be realistic with all sports prognostications & promises. No clue.

October 9, 2018 @ 4:25 PM

@bsmntdwllr73 what comic books are you into? The serial comics of DC/Marvel, or stand alone mini-series? I've read Y-the last man (fantastic mini series!) and I'm currently working through The Sandman (started buying them, so I want to finish purchasing the collection even though I can get all the books at the local library). I tried getting into DC serial when they rebooted a couple of summers ago, but there were too many issues to keep track. Do you have any mini-series like Y or Sandman that you'd recommend?

October 9, 2018 @ 5:55 PM

Not a very exciting sports night last night. Oh well, looks like tonight won't be any better until really late at night when my Coyotes play. They better win. My Habs play their home opener tomorrow against the Kings. Well, the Kings won't be Kings because my Habs will shut them down. I know you're probably disappointed about the party. It's canceled, but look forward to my Superbowl party, Stanley Cup Party and NBA party. It will happen. My baker wasn't going to bake the cake anyway until the day before the party.

October 10, 2018 @ 7:27 AM

H.o.E. - the new normal is getting them way in advance for bigger tours it seems. All three concerts I have gone to in the last 4 weeks, I bought the tickets eons ago. When I saw Adele in 2016, I purchased them in 2015! It is bonkers. Hopefully no one shows up a year early!!

October 10, 2018 @ 9:03 AM

Re: pests in the house... not as bad as bed bugs, but last week I went to soak some chickpeas for the next evening's dinner. I wash them as I usually would any dry good and wonder ... huh ... what are all these brown flecks in the water?

Oh. Fuck. They're moving. And I had just eaten a pound of these chickpeas the previous weekend...

The entire pantry was infested, though the chickpeas seemed to be ground zero. We threw out everything that wasn't in a tin or glass jar. So much waste. But we haven't seen any since...

Bought a bunch of containers/jars and no longer will anything be stored in paper, cardboard, or an unsealed bag in there.

Then on Friday apparently I left the freezer ajar over 24 hours >_

October 10, 2018 @ 9:49 AM

Back in my prime comic book buying days, I was pretty much evenly
split between Marvel and DC, but undoubtedly the former has
always been my favourite comic book company. Lack of consistent
funds and far too many reboots and repeated number one issues
helped cause me to lose interest. Now, I just take out the bound
graphic novels if and when TPL orders them. As for Y-The Last Man,
I concur that it is a great read, however, I only have limited exposure to
the Sandman oeuvre, so I'll have to reserve my opinion for now.
Other potential suggestions: Fables (Vertigo), 150 issues/20+ graphic
novels), Saga (same author as Y..., 54 issues, 9 g.n.s), Alan Moore's
The League of Gentlemen (various graphic novels), all of these are
worthy reads. Hope this helps!!

October 10, 2018 @ 9:59 AM

markosaar - zomg, that is icky. i'm sure they just came in with something and multiplied... glad it is all cleared up now.

i hope everyone can enjoy this last gasp of fabulous weather. someone is coming to my office over my lunch break so i unfortunately, cannot :(

The proper title for those Alan Moore graphic novels is "The League of Extraordinary

The strangest sports media story of the year thus far has to be the 2 Detroit Tigers' TV broadcasters getting into a physical confrontation in the booth after a game late in the season, apparently over a chair. Now they've both been terminated and will not return next year. Their salaries were mentioned as well: 500k and 350k. (The higher paid guy also did other work for the station). Those paydays are higher than what I would have predicted. You know there's going to be a massive list of hopeful replacements for those on-air spots.

October 10, 2018 @ 12:10 PM

Cherish this moment.
3 Leafs leading the all NHL in scoring.

markosaar, we had a similar problem with a moth infestation from an open bag of brown rice, took weeks of cleaning, and throwing out a lot of pantry food.
Hopefully the freezer didn't defrost, they usually can sustain cold if only slightly opened.

Watching launch of 2 crew (one American, one Russian) to ISS -- it lifted off and got to about the point of about where the four strap-on boosters would separate, and heard the Russian translator's voice say "failure of the booster".

It sounds as though the capsule with the crew may have been able to make an emergency separation.

Well, my Coyotes won in a shootout. That's great. They finally won a game. My Habs play their home opener tonight. They will beat the Queens. Yes, really Kings, but they can be Queens. Well, I voted yesterday. I like the vote at home. I didn't have to go anywhere. A couple ladies came to my place and helped me mark my ballot. So many candidates for Mayor. I voted for Torey and I voted for Mark Cormier for council. I didn't vote for school trustee. I mean I am an old single woman. I really don't care about schools. I don't have kids so why should I vote for trustee.

A couple of musical musings on some old tunes this morning: More than 31 years have gone by
since the original release of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" track, and I can't be the only
person still waiting to find out if Annie is indeed okay, can I?!? I mean, it's not like MJ is still around
to answer that musical query for us at this point, but I really feel like he left us hanging with that
one. Although it is quite possible that she is indeed dead by the end of that song, as MJ's impassioned
questioning of her safety status is quite hysterical at the end. One for the Sphinx, I guess!!

And now for some melodic pondering of a more CHEEKY manner: Caught myself listening to the latest
remastered Bee Gees greatest hits package last week and one track really got me thinking: Wouldn't
it be great if the first and last words of "Fanny (Be Tender With My Love)" were transposed in a more
updated cover version. Ya know, "Love (Be Tender With My Fanny")? After all, we are living in a most
evolved era and such a re-titled track would be socially inclusive of us all on so many levels!!! Kinda
makes me wish I had the musical talent to pull it off myself. Then again, it's not like the lack of
a melodic voice kept Lemmy from having a lengthy career in da muzik bizness!!!

Hey TM, surprised you haven't mentioned anything on the Gord Downey documentary on CBC Friday night , I just heard about it on Evan Solomons show today.
I heard a lot of BeeGees over the 70/80' s but didn't recall the Fanny song. Maybe they were covertly thinking of fannies when they wrote it .

Nice to see York region charging this nair do well after an incident with an off duty Metro Cop. (dripping irony!!)
Handcuffing a 70 year old man is pretty disgusting, almost somethig you would read about US policing.
Total over reaction,
