SiriusXM Canada Cancels Humble and Fred

For the first time in five years, there was no Humble and Fred show on SiriusXM Canada's Canada Laughs channel this morning. SiriusXM chose not to renew Humble and Fred's contract.

No reason was given, but I have my theories. It's unlikely due to budgetary reasons as the licensing fee was very small with Humble and Fred generating their revenue by selling advertising. Also, it's worth noting, Humble and Fred offered to waive this small fee and pay for the sole SiriusXM employee who works the daily two hour shift. SiriusXM still took a pass. Did SiriusXM have concerns about the content? Did they want more control over the show (and the hosts)? They're not saying, but both are possibly true.

Regardless, Humble and Fred are moving on with a new distribution deal that will be announced shortly. Funny 820 out of Hamilton will carry them live from 7am to 9am which means many listeners will be able to tune them in on terrestrial radio and others will be able to stream the show live without having to pay for a subscription.

And of course, at its core, the show is a podcast. The wonderful thing about podcasts is that the heartbeat is open source and the distribution channel cannot be controlled by a media company. You can choose not to renew a contract and to cancel a show, but to paraphrase Apu Nahasapeemapetilon on The Simpsons, you cannot kill a podcast.

The Humble and Fred show on SiriusXM is dead. Long live the Humble and Fred show.

Ode to Cloverdale Mall

My daughter got her braces off today. That means I've been taking her to monthly appointments these past two years, giving me plenty of time to wander around Cloverdale Mall.

I joke that Cloverdale is heaven's waiting room, because it's chock full of old people during weekdays, but I find it a rather fun place to waste time. In addition to a Winners, where I've bought great socks and shorts recently, there's a rather unique Home Hardware. This Home Hardware always has seemingly random sales. For example, I just bought a small pack of M&Ms for 7 cents a bag.

20180724_141026

In addition to other key stops like an LCBO, MTO, Rexall and Metro, they have a Dollarama. Check out this kickass CD they're selling for $2!

20180724_135810

The Sunrise Records, which was the last one in the city before they took over all those HMV leases, will sell you used cassettes for a loonie! Kick is a play-thru.

20180724_140510

And I quite like this tee shirt they're selling. Everybody knows that 90s Canadian Alt Rock is a genre.

20180724_140419

There's also this independent sports apparel shop where you can get a good deal on expired goods, like this Jays shirt.

20180724_140156

I'm almost sorry the braces are off and my monthly visits have come to an end. Sure, she'll be wearing a retainer for a while and they'll want to check things out, but I'm told those visits are only a couple of minutes. That's not nearly long enough for a mall this quirky.

Toronto Raptors Trade DeMar DeRozan to San Antonio for Kawhi Leonard

Whoa. While we slept, Masai Ujiri reached agreement in principle to acquire San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard for a package that includes DeMar DeRozan. DeRozan was told last night, and the other parts of the deal are unknown at the moment I'm typing these words.

DeMar DeRozan is the greatest Toronto Raptor of all time. It's been an absolute pleasure watching his progress these past nine years, and when Chris Bosh left for Miami, he said this:

And got us he did. He's got the record for most points as a Raptor, most points in a game, and gave us plenty of moments like this:

Kawhi Leonard is the better player, but he's heading to the Lakers after this season, right? And he's said he has no interest in playing for the Raptors.

I just hope Masai Ujiri knows what he's doing. I have great concerns about this trade, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt, until there's no doubt...

Update:

We have the final details. The Toronto Raptors have agreed to trade DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and a 2019 protected first-rounder to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green.

Jamar McNeil Joins Roger Ashby and Marilyn Denis on CHUM

CHUM was teasing a big announcement this morning, and with Marilyn's son Adam Wylde sitting on the sidelines waiting for his non-compete to expire, there was much speculation he was joining the team. If you follow me on Twitter, you knew that wasn't the core of this announcement.

Joining Roger and Marilyn on the CHUM morning show is Jamar McNeil. He's an American who was most recently on the air in Chicago as J Niice on B96. As you'll read at that link, he was ready to relocate, and now he's in Toronto and will be a key part of CHUM's listener retention strategy when Roger Ashby decides to hang up his headphones for the last time.

JNiice2

As for Adam Wylde, he and Steve Dangle are actually filling in for Jeff Blair on The Fan 590. I'm pretty confident he'll end up on a Bell Media station, but that's where you'll find him this week.

How to Pronounce Toronto

I've lived in Toronto my entire life. I was born in Parkdale. I've never even lived in Mississauga or Thornhill or Ajax or another border town. I've always lived in the megacity.

CHUM is making another announcement (as I type!) and I predicted they were adding a third person to the Roger and Marilyn morning show and that this third person was coming from the USA. It turns out I was bang-on, but more on that later. Here's the reply I was just tweeted.

I've always been told real Torontonians don't pronounce the second "t" in Toronto. We say "Toronno" or "Trawno". But here's the thing... I often pronounce that second "t" because it's damn fun to nail that second "t".

So no criticism from me when Jamar McNeil hit that second "t". I'm more than OK with it. In fact, I'd be delighted if it caught on.

Oldest Tee Shirt I Still Wear Regularly Turns 20

I'm a big fan of tee shirts. I wear a tee shirt or two just about every day of the year. Even in the dead of winter I'll wear a tee shirt under my jacket.

I'm guessing I have about twenty tees in my current rotation. The oldest one I still wear regularly is now twenty years old. It's a Pearl Jam shirt I bought when I saw them at Molson Park in Barrie back in '98.

My Concert Going Shirt

Not surprisingly, I love getting free tee shirts. Send me a tee (medium, please!) and I'll probably wear it. Is there anything better than a free tee?

Greatest Blue Jays Defensive Plays

I haven't watched much Blue Jays baseball these past two months. I watched quite a bit in April, but by mid-May I found myself doing other things. It was clear the Jays weren't contending for a title this year, and I found myself more inspired by their AA team, so I decided to take a break.

On reddit today, there was a discussion about the greatest Blue Jays defensive plays of all-time. That post has inspired his one.

Here are five of the greatest defensive plays in Blue Jays history.

Roberto Alomar vs. Lenny Dykstra

Josh Donaldson vs. David DeJesus

Buck Martinez vs. Broken Leg

Kevin Pillar vs. Luke Maile

Devon White vs. David Justice

2018 Buick Enclave Avenir AWD

I recently upgraded from my 1999 Mazda Protege to a 2018 Buick Enclave Avenir for a couple of weeks. Unlike my Protege, the Enclave actually fits my entire family of six. Even with us all buckled up, there's plenty of room.

20180705_161031

That's the biggest difference. The Buick Enclave Avenir is super roomy. I thought of removing the seats, building a podcast studio and bringing my services on the road. Instead, we planned a couple of road trips and puttered around town.

20180705_161047

How roomy was it? I was able to drive three of my kids with room for my bike in the back.

2018-07-06_05-04-34

There were some safety features with this Buick that blew my mind. There's this bird-eye camera view they call "surround vision" that's just magic.

Buick

I also like the dashboard displaying the speed limit of the road I'm on. There were times driving back from Cambridge I was sure the limit was 100 but saw on the dashboard it was actually 80. I'm sure that saved me a ticket or two.

Buick

When the Buick left me for Oshawa, and I drove my Protege again, I felt like I was sitting on the road. You get used to the height of an SUV, and you get used to the powerful 3.6 L DI V6. Not to mention the infotainment system, Bluetooth streaming, touchscreen navigation, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, etc....

Scenes from Cambridge, Ontario

I've been driving a new Buick Enclave for the past couple of weeks, and since it's heading back to Oshawa tomorrow, we thought we'd take a road trip to Cambridge, Ontario. We picked Cambridge so the little ones could walk amongst the butterflies at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory, and we adults could check out the locations we've seen on The Handmaid's Tale.

Here are some pics I took today.

John Tavares is a Toronto Maple Leaf

My Toronto Maple Leafs have just signed their biggest free agent, ever. John Tavares is coming home, signing a seven year $77-million deal.

I was on a bike ride with my youngest when I got a phone call from my oldest. "Dad, guess what happened?" I knew from the tone of his voice that #91 was a Leaf. It's all we've talked about all weekend.

Tavares is 27 and has 621 points in 669 career NHL games. He and Auston Matthews up the middle gives us Penguinian strength at centre and is an enormous upgrade over the departing Tyler Bozak. This is exciting!
