Big Match for TFC Sunday.

Will it drain NFL ratings in Toronto?

@TVOR

The only TFC match I watched during the regular season was the game I attended live. But I didn't miss a minute of the first playoff game on TV. I won't miss a minute of the second leg, either. I just wish I could be there in person.

I'm second. I'm not first. Oh well, at least I found this Open Mike. Hockey sucked last night. My Habs lost. This is no good. Also my Coyotes lost again. My Coyotes only won one game. I have basketball tonight. My Cavs, Suns and Nets hopefully will win. I need all of them to win. I got lots of junk mail yesterday. It's stupid flyers. I don't need them. Canada Post is wasting their time putting junk mail in my mailbox. Oh, I have to get a crown. I have two dentist appointments on November 13 and November 27. I get a temporary crown on November 13 and then permanent on November 27. I wish he could have just pulled the tooth, but no, they don't like to just pull it. I really don't like going to the dentist. It's so expensive. I need my Ravens and Cardinals to win on Sunday. My Browns have the bye week. I don't know why my Browns can't win these days.

I couldn't make the game, but hoping to see the East Final or even better the Final :)

Leafs lost again :( they need to figure out this first period laps they keep having. I know they can score but chasing the same to win is no way to go about winning.

Over about the last year and a half, I've gone to 6 events with reserved seating -- everyone has a ticket for a specific section, row and seat. At 4 of those I've arrived and someone is sitting in my seat. It's almost always a group of about 5 or 6 people using 2 or 3 extra seats among them for coats, purses, shopping bags, etc.
I'll say "I'm in seat number 17", and they give me an annoyed look like I'm the one being an A-hole. Three of those times I've been asked something like "And you want to sit HERE?" -- as though they're expecting me to answer "No, I'll just turn around and go home now, and let you use the seat I paid $78 for."
And this is not me showing up half way through something and people having moved over into what they've assumed are unoccupied seats. At every one of these I've gotten there between 5 and 20 minutes before the event starts. And these are games or shows that are obviously completely sold out or very close to being filled, not things where more than half the seats will be empty.
Do some people just not understand the basic concept of reserved seating?

Rreminds me of that Seinfeld episode,

Jerry: I don't understand. Do you have my reservation?
Rental Car Agent: We have your reservation, we just ran out of cars.
Jerry: But the reservation keeps the car here. That's why you have the reservation.
Rental Car Agent: I think I know why we have reservations.
Jerry: I don't think you do. You see, you know how to *take* the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation. And that's really the most important part of the reservation: the holding. Anybody can just take them.

I agree with you and the other commenters from 10 years ago.
http://www.torontomike.com/2007/11/im_telling_you_for_the_last_ti.html

Let's stop the completely pointless clock-changing. It seems the only excuse given for continuing it in Alberta against the wishes of the majority was that other North American jurisdictions still do it (most of Sask., AZ, and HI don't change).
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/great-daylight-time-debate-174530394.html

What's needed is to get the leaders of the provinces and states to agree to stop doing at some specific point in the near future.
BTW, no one will call it "year-round DST". Whatever time any jurisdiction stays on will be their "Standard Time". Look at the Wikipedia page for 'Time in Saskatchewan'.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_in_Saskatchewan

I assume here in Toronto, and Ottawa, Montreal, etc., it would be designated as Atlantic Standard Time if we wanted to stay all year on the time we now use in summer.
If an 8:51 a.m. sunrise (for Toronto) in late December and early January would have kids walking to school in darkness,
http://www.timeanddate.com/sun/canada/toronto?month=12

then just inform schools that they should strongly consider changing to a slightly later start time ( I would assume likely permanently, when the school year starts in September of that year).

I'm an Albertan and it was politicians who cancelled the bill, not the people. Most people don't care and for farmers (dairy especially) it sets off their milking schedule. Alta is pretty much aligned with it's Sask brothers next door and the two economies are intertwined with farming and energy.

I can see changing it being difficult. Most computer software has code in it to change the time so that would require adding Alberta time. So the entire technology world would have to adapt including cell companies. They probably figured why bother.

Every Week there is a mass killing in 1 way or another in U.S.
Today 20+ killed in a church. Last week NYC with killing people in bike paths.
WHY? I have no explanation.
Life sure has changed overall in last few years for the worse.

Mass shootings in the USA are far from a recent phenomenon.

Link for US mass shooting stats

November 5, 2017 @ 6:02 PM

Justin

And here we are, with the instantaneous politicization of every shooting or attack online. Knee-jerk reactions from both sides, the gun-crazies and the "NRA is a terrorist organization" nutbars. I take somewhat of a middle ground between the two.

I despise guns, and think America's gun control laws (or lack thereof) is ridiculous. However, I've yet to see compelling evidence that tighter gun control laws would make a tangible difference reducing violence. If someone is prepared to kill numerous people, surely they'd be prepared to obtain an assault-style weapon illegal as well. Many of these mass shootings are done with illegal guns, and those that were conducted with guns purchased legally: would more restrictive laws really have stopped them from getting the guns they want? If I wanted to, I could take 3 minutes right now and order an illegal gun online. It's that easy.

To me, it seems that more restrictive gun control laws would do nothing but restrict the freedoms of lawful and responsible gun owners. But I'm open to being persuaded on this one. I do hate guns, after all.

November 5, 2017 @ 6:42 PM

Rick C in Oakville

@Justin: I think the issue in the USA of gun control would be impossible to enact and be effective if implemented now. With the possibility of billions of weapons already out there a large number would go underground.
I think it is more a cultural and historical issue, that makes having a gun in America so different than in Canada. 2nd amendment rights just makes the pro gun lobby dig in their heels.
On the off chance they started stricter gun control, it might be better in a hundred years.

November 5, 2017 @ 8:34 PM

Irv

The gun violence has everything to do with the magazine size. A single shot .308 can kill a single human. A .308 with a 60 round magazine can kill up to 60 people. The success of Canadian gun laws is not because it restricts weapons it's because it restricts magazine size. The much feared AR-15 is actually a smaller sized rifle (calibre, grains). It's effective because people use huge magazines. In the USA they buy a bumpstock which allows you to turn a semi auto into a "full auto" (though technically it's different).

November 5, 2017 @ 10:45 PM

markosaar

@Toronto Mike,

Balked at replying a couple times because this is definitely not my expertise. But my impression is that most people can't stand the phoney interpolated frames that 120 Hz TVs produce with that smoothing feature.

A 60 Hz TV can produce the framerates of the odd exceptional high-framerate movie like The Hobbit (48 fps). And even then most people aren't used to it and think it looks weird.

Practically nothing other than the Hobbit has been filmed at such a high framerate, and most people seem to like the motion blur when they're watching movies.

Not saying they're right, but 120 Hz seems like overkill at the moment...

One must think that Sebastian Giovinco does not have the dicipline to compete at a high level. If TFC does not win the MLS Cup again this year. The blame lies solely on him.

November 6, 2017 @ 8:07 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@markosaar

I'm no expert either, but I thought a truly higher refresh rate meant a smoother picture. I thought the marketing departments were inflating that number knowing that the higher the number the better it would sell.

But if you could learn the actual real refresh rate, 120 is better than 60 for a big screen.

But nobody can match Giovinco in terms of skill. Heck, we're not advancing if he doesn't score that gem in the first leg.

I think Giovinco is a pure talent..and well highly emotional as well (most of us Italians are :) )
he shouldn't have done what he did yesterday a) he wasn't pushed it was a clean challenge that he was fighting for b) even if it was a dirty you should have enough sense to keep your emotions in check.

Altidore same thing, he has enough experience to know not to be baited like that..he went down on that shove like a ton of bricks, I love soccer but antics like that bother me, you wonder why a good portion of people don't like the sport, it crap like that are a big reason, where is the sportsmanship anymore.

I watch about 30 minutes of the last half and I found the ref to make some poor decisions and if he was that bad all game I can see it getting away from him and the players trying to take it into their own hands.

@VOR
he blamed the condition of the field on the Argo, and its the condition of the field that contributed to the fatigue/cramping ..make him look like an idiot, but the European players come from countries that live and breath the game, a field would never be in that condition in Europe. Plus something was for sure lost in translation :)

Let hope they have enough depth to come out of the first leg with something or the very least not a huge whole

November 6, 2017 @ 9:20 AM

Daniel

@TorontoMike @markosaar

I thought the idea of the refresh rate was that 120hz was more for sports than for movies. Especially fast paced sports (like hockey) where a 60hz refresh rate would result in shadowing of players and blurriness in HD. I've never seen it happen but thats the risk

mrmojorisinca

Pitches in Europe can also be bad. Wembley is awful and nobody plays there regularly, except for this season. Premier league pitches are usually ok but the Championship teams have some pretty bad field conditions

November 6, 2017 @ 10:05 AM

mrmojorisinca

@ Daniel

I think its an excuse, as everyone playing on the same field so really no advantage or disadvantage. Gio is softer then what we expect from our athletes in North America and again I'm sure something was lost in translation. I still think he a great talent, glad he is here.

My personal observations . I bought a 47 inch LG LCD in 2009 when i got divorced.120 Hz for the sports F1 and MotoGP mostly but hockey if i wanted to be pissed off for a couple of hours. It being 2009 after all.

Recently with the purchase of a car for my wife we got a 50inch RCA LCD TV. 60hz Thinking that LCD and a little bigger would be better we switched.

Maybe it was 8 years of 120hz corrupting my eyes but my LG looks much better than the RCA. Now they are not the same quality The LG was Mid high when i bought it and the RCA is something you'd find at discount store probably so not apple to apples but the refresh rate was subtly noticeable and we've gone back to the LG and are quite happy with it.

So my two cents is i'm in the 120hz camp and like Mike I'd spend the extra on a name brand in my case I'll look at LG before anyone else once this one dies.

I've learned not to compare the sports. If you compare what you see on the soccer pitch to what you value in playoff hockey, you're going to be disappointed. The cultures are just so different.

There's much more embellishment in soccer. And yes, when our NHL leader is hurt, we expect them to finish the playoff game, Bobby Baun style.

That disallowed goal was baffling until I learned it was actually offside. That made much more sense, but at the time it appeared they were calling a fowl. No wonder Giovinco lost his shit. I'm glad he's here, too.

November 6, 2017 @ 10:51 AM

The Voice of Reason

Mike, don't get me wrong I am happy Giovinco is here as well, but he is developing a legacy that is not great.

Diving or embellishment as you put it :) I think is very unsportsmanlike,

I recall during a World Cup where Robert Baggio kick the ball towards his opponent in the box to win a penalty kick (he hit his hand) that sort of thing I understand its tactic and if your the defender should avoid such a kick, but the diving, embellishment when you can still have a clean cut chance on net come on that's not very sportsman like.

I still think that goal should have stood, it didn't look to be offside..not from what they showed us on TV anyway. I think the ref should be banned from any other play off games, he and his lines men did a poor job

November 6, 2017 @ 11:46 AM

Daniel

mrmojorisinca

handballs are different because you can commit a handball; but if its ball-to-hand rather than hand-to-ball its not a penalty

The problem with soccer is that embellishment is incentivized by the the foul & penalty structure. chances created from the penalty area rarely turn into goals. lets say 25% is an extremely high conversion rate of goals. However penalty kicks have a 75% chance of scoring. So the incentive when you're in the penalty area is to go down like you've been shot and hope for a penalty kick

If hockey rewarded any penalty below the hashmarks with a penalty shot, How much diving do you think there would be?

the other incentive is that a red card to the other team almost guarantees your team a victory. So if you can make it seem like the other player's tackle broke your ankle, you can get the other player 2 yellow cards quickly. There is no real penalty for embellishment (not one that is called regularly) so it doesn't hurt (no pun intended) you to make fouls against you look worst than it was. and if you get get the other team a quick yellow, or a red, it changes the dynamic of the game

Jeez, today marks the third day of the right lane of Dundas near Islington being blocked off for no obvious reason. I'm still annoyed when I pass a construction sign and see a big hole in the ground, or a cherry picker parked under some power lines, but at least I can understand what's going on. On the other hand, maybe something is actually behind the pylons, but I'm too busy navigating traffic to notice!

On the plus side, whatever's going on isn't blocking the sidewalk at the intersection, so the students walking to ECI can still cut through the park. As an alumni of ECI myself, I know that if they couldn't get through there, it'd be an annoying detour down Islington to the lawn bowling club driveway. That, or a short wade through the creek ;)

Just watching parts of it, he obviously knew what he was doing and must have done some watching and reading about other races earlier in the 1990 World Sportscar season, probably taking a lot of time just to get ready for presumably a one-afternoon job, when he was already doing MLB and NHL for TSN.

It reminds of once in the 1990s (it must have been a Friday in July) when the morning show of The Fan 590 (or maybe still 1430?) was being broadcast remotely from the Toronto Molson Indy. For a brief time there was a pair of dueling hockey announcer impersonators attempting to describe the first IndyCar practice session, with Erik Tomas as Danny Gallivan and Mike Richards as Foster Hewitt.
Tomas had actually been a TV play-by-play announcer for Leafs games briefly at some point in the 1980s.

Cheryl

My Suns lost last night. That was no good. My Habs hopefully will win and hopefully my Coyotes will win. Also I'm hoping my Cavs win as well. I need three wins tonight that's for sure.
