First lol. Happy Thanksgiving Everyone. Go Cats Go! Oskie Wee Wee!

October 6, 2017 @ 8:18 AM

I'm not first. Oh well, big deal. How about those Indians? That was great. Jay Bruce hit a home run and Trevor Bauer pitched a real gem. Corey Kluber pitches tonight. My Habs won. I couldn't listen to it all because I'm so pumped up about my Indians. They were losing when I switched to the Indians. Surprise that they won in a shootout. My Coyotes lost though which is no good.

Since @DUTCH has mentioned the CFL, I thought I'd mention that I'm taking the whole family to the Argos game on Saturday. First time I'll have seen them at BMO Field.

I love playoff baseball, but some of these night games go so late!

In the AL, I'm rooting against the Yankees and Red Sox and then I'll likely root for the Astros.

In the NL, I'm just rooting for exciting games.

I still think that my previous suggestion 'bout looking into a sponsorship from
the sports-gambling side of the street or perhaps Gamblers Anonymous might
be a good idea!! Wish I had connections to help you out in this regard!!

October 6, 2017 @ 9:06 AM

I'm confused by this -- what is it about the 1967 Leafs Stanley Cup parade that YouTube would claim their advertisers would find to be "not suitable".

If you're taking your kids to an Argo game, that should help lower the average age of the crowd there. Actually I think it's improved a little in the last 3 or 4 years, but before that I would look around and think I must have been by far the youngest person there, and every game looked like it was seniors day.
Yikes -- If the picture in this article shows the typical size of the crowd at Argo games,

that looks it would fit into the current Varsity Stadium (5000 seats) and still have some empty seats, in spite of whatever ridiculously fictitious attendance number they fabricate to make themselves look better for sponsors. Maybe they could work out a deal to play at U of T or York U for next season.

The last time I saw Saskatchewan play in Toronto, 2/3rds of the crowd was wearing green. Apparently there are lots of transplanted Saskatchewanians in Toronto. So that should help numbers... but we'll see.

I'll report back!

October 6, 2017 @ 9:17 AM

^ meant "looks like it would fit ... "

October 6, 2017 @ 9:20 AM

I don't know why anyone would bother buying the more expensively priced tickets. It looks like it's effectively general admission -- show up ten minutes before game time, buy the cheapest tickets, and then move anywhere you want to by about the middle of the first quarter.

I haven't heard from Rob J in awhile. I know his Dodgers play today.

October 6, 2017 @ 9:42 AM

I've only ever been to one Argos game back in 1979 at the old Exhibition Stadium so I don't
really have any ties to the team or football in general. Kinda funny, actually, however, as my father
played football as a teenager (not at school, as my grandmother wouldn't sign the permission
form, but after class in a more ad hoc version without equipment.) His nickname was "Moose",
because apparently he was a real battering ram! Still, there is one thing that I'm most curious
about: what ever happened to the once-stated plan of using BMO Field as a concert venue?
I know that Sloan played there in some kind of promo event to usher in the facility and that
I saw the Genesis reunion tour there back in 2007, but after that the live music seemed to
seemingly stop. Sorry to the critics if my Genesis reference offends anyone!!

Good question... maybe with the Bud Stage being right there has softened the market.

If you can sell 15,000-20,000 seats, you've got the ACC, Bud Stage and dome... but I don't know. Maybe someone wiser can shed some light on this one.

Some ass clown stole a really nice plant outside our house. Who the hell does this? If it was a hobo, what's the value? It wasn't just torn out and thrown around the street. It's gone. I can't imagine someone in the neighbourhood stealing it and re planting it in their own yard, but I suppose there are some weasels out there who'd do this sort of thing.

Today i'm going to buy another big ass purple mum just like the one that was stolen, but i'm gonna put a colony of poisonous fire ants in it to sting the next prick that decides he wants it.

October 6, 2017 @ 9:50 AM

@Ryan G

That sucks, man.

There was a guy in my neighbourhood who had his bench stolen from the front of his house, and I wrote this very angry sign to let the thief know how low that is.

I don't know if that ever works, but I'll bet it feels good to write and post it.

October 6, 2017 @ 9:52 AM

@Ryan G
I like how your mind works! Sorry about the stolen plant. Sometimes you have to
go all Ezekiel 25:17 on the unjust!!!

@Toronto Mike @bsmntdwllr73 (jesus that's tough to type!)

I strongly suspect it's a bum. I live in the east side of the downtown core and they are as plentiful as embarrassing Donald Trump quotes. I once saw a scraggly heroin junkie woman stealing a few flowers from someone's yard, and put them in her hair..that was actually a little sad..but I digress.

Frankly, I am amazed how some of these people still walk the earth. Ever see the crazy woman around yonge/dundas or jarvis who's perpetually hunched right over on a walker, dressed in all black who screams at everyone and shakes her fist? She looks 123 but maybe she's like 40 or something.....streets will do that to you I suppose.

October 6, 2017 @ 10:10 AM

@Ryan G
I've had the great displeasure of seeing that handsome women you've just described
patrol up and down Yonge Street for over 25 years!! She is just one of the many charming
"street performers" who have became (at least to my slightly warped perspective!) almost
a heroic last stand against the inevitable, continued over-gentrification of the formerly quite
seedy downtown core. Ah, shit, now I'll probably be chastised for putting down the presumably
sanity-challenged. You just can't win sometimes!!!

I used to comment online a lot but have generally dropped off because of a lack of time, and just it feeling useless. Though I still enjoy the challenge of attempting to change minds.

Something that spurred me back into it a bit was the local homeowner vitriol and rancor against the Woodbine bike lanes. I thought it was so goofy that their arguments were essentially, "now there are more cars on side-streets, and cars are dangerous". Though they weren't really connecting the dots there.

Whenever this gets pointed out the counter-argument is always, "but cyclists break the law!" Immediate weird tribalism and false-equivalency. The part where this breaks down for me is that even the worst scofflaw cyclist is highly unlikely to kill anyone but themselves. Meanwhile over 40000 people died in car collisions in America and Canada last year, and we just accept it as a fact of life.

Edward Keenan just wrote a good article on this:

I wish everyone would just relax on the roads ... remain vigilant, but don't freak out over missing lights, getting that extra car-length, etc. Leave a bit earlier and take your time. Explore alternative transportation. Even Sue-Ann Levy has taken to biking to work hah.

I plan on continuing through this winter. I have warm clothes, a generally nice route mostly along the lake shore, and studded winter tires.

I hear you. We run the risk of not seeming compassionate to the many people who clearly have some serious psychological issues, and that I get. If only we had an island nearby that happened to be named "Centre" that we could put 'em all on and then let nature take it's course.

Kidding of course.

We'd send 'em to Ward's Island.

Too bad that the legendary George A. Romero isn't alive any longer to make a film
about this very subject. Although, come to think of it, I think that he might have
already done just that. Plus, I believe that he became a Canadian citizen so there
would have been the whole CanCon angle to it as well. I live in Parkdale and I'm
sure that it wouldn't surprise anyone if I mentioned that my cherished(!) hood has
more than its fair share of the unhnged. In fact, the Parkdale library, where I'm currently
typing this, is almost like a drop-in day program for many of these people. Same with
the Yorkville and Reference library branches. But that is a sad story for another rant!!
Can't help but think of the Family Guy episode where Peter introduces Chris to the
library and tells him that "the library is a place where the homeless people come to shave
and go BM." Truer words were never spoken, fact or fiction!

I think the one concert at BMO Field occurred in 2007, the first year it was open, when it had artificial turf that was replaced by grass two three years later. And this 2014 article mentions something about it being too expensive for concert promoters to pay the unionized city workers (I assume to set up seats on the field and maybe the stage?)

Football stadiums are not great concert venues, other than maybe (if it still had artificial turf) one of those day-long festival type of things with general admission so people could move between the standing on the field and sitting in the seats. To repeat myself, what's really needed at The Ex is a Radio City Music Hall or The Theater at Madison Square Garden (formerly The Felt Forum) sized and type of venue that could be used all year, not just in summer.

Oh man, losing Marek vs. Wyshynski sucks so much.

It was so much more than a hockey podcast, it was more of a buddy podcast. They had incredible chemistry that Wyshynski just doesn't have with Lozo.

I've never been so bummed about a podcast ending.

I'm guessing Rogers told Marek he can't record with Wyshynski any longer.

Well if I was having a party and Satan was coming, I'm guessing he'd be a hell of a lot more fun (see what i did there?) compared to that goody two shoes Jeebus. Er, I mean goody two sandals. And since Jeebus wears sandals all the time I'm gonna bet his feet are reel gnarly, whereas Satan's cloven feet would be a hit at my party, minus all the cloppety cloppety of course. And what chick doesn't dig a guy with horns and the ability to make someone's eyes go all white and have their spin round and round (like a record) on a whim. Besides, God would bring a six pack of Near Beer and Belzebub would be haulin a kegger , a case of jack daniels and a couple of hundred deviled eggs. Good times.

I got a kick out of the CFL banter. I'm a Torontonian transplanted to Saskatchewan. The CFL and junior hockey are huge out here. And yes, there are Rider fans everywhere. Mind you the Leafs still get their supporters on the west coast swing. It's funny to hear the crowd roar when the visiting team scores!

October 6, 2017 @ 9:04 PM

Satan is real, but he is not coming anytime soon. He hasn't played since 2014, and the Leafs have no need for a 42 yr old Slovakian defenseman.

October 6, 2017 @ 9:29 PM

Urooj Islam

Not a CFL fan but since Toronto Mike brought up that he's going to the Roughriders/Argonauts game on Saturday, I'm really interested to see how much (and how) Roughriders runningback Trent RIchardson plays.

There's something very admirable about a player who was so highly regarded coming out of Alabama and a Top 3 pick in the NFL draft just 5 years ago trying to re-ignite his football career in Canada. Most in his position think that the CFL is below them.

I am rooting for him.

My Las Vegas Golden Showers sprinkled in a couple of goals last night but it was enough to be 1-0-0
Tonight they will pour in a bunch of goals against some team from Arizona and be 2-0-0
I know they will for sure.
Other than that not much else happened in sports yesterday.

October 7, 2017 @ 2:12 AM

Well, that Indians game started at 5:00 yesterday. I went to bed before it ended because it went really long. My Indians were losing. It was tied at 8 for so long. Good thing they won, but Edwin Encarnacion is hurt and that sucks. I just hope they keep it going. My Diamondbacks lost though. That sucks. My Cavs also lost. They were leading through most of the game, but they lost. My Suns also lost. My Coyotes will beat the Golden Knights. I didn't know the Golden Knights had any fans. Well, my Habs also play tonight. It's the Capitols. Habs will win because the price is right. I hope my Ravens, Browns, and Cardinals all win in football tomorrow.

October 7, 2017 @ 8:14 AM

Las Vegas Golden Showers?!? Pretty clever, as I'm sure that there is a lot of that going

Why did the Golden Knights have to beat my Coyotes? That sucks. The Golden Knights really have to be so fricken good? Anyway, my Coyotes lost. My Habs also lost. Why did Alex Ovejkin have to score so many goals? It sucks. My Diamondbacks also lost to the fricken Dodgers. Well, they'll bounce back. They have to. Well, football day today. My Ravens, Browns, and Cardinals will all win. My Cavs also play so hopefully they win. I also need my Habs to win tonight. Do it, Habs. Carey Price has to stop allowing so many goals.

October 8, 2017 @ 9:54 AM

Happy Thanksgiving All.

Our family had our dinner late this afternoon with 10-12 people here. Of course most asked what can I bring & gave them suggestions - salad, desert, buns, fruit tray, etc. & told them 10-12 people for dinner. People usually BYOB & I supplied wine (which I don't partake) & main course, turkey, potatoes, 3 veggies & enough refreshments for all. Also made desert for a variety.
We decided to invite friends (a couple) who have became close in the last 2-3 years & said they would bring desert. She likes her wine & he likes his beer.
They show up before noon with a 9" pie that was cut in half & 4 tarts & 2 of their nieces that they are babysitting today. No BYOB.
I left in a hurray to get more beer & another bottle of wine (I already had 2).
Others did their deed with many leftovers.
A good time & full & everyone offering to help with dishes (no, the dishwasher can do it later) except above friends. !st in & last out & thankfully 1 niece old enough to drive them home.
Not complaining, but complaining.

October 8, 2017 @ 7:54 PM

Haha Andrew, sorry you had to go through this, maybe they are better as solo guests, than when a crowd is around.

Sports sucked yesterday except my Ravens won. My Browns and Cardinals lost. Also my Cavs lost. My Habs lost again. This sucks. On top of that, the fricken Yankees beat my Indians. That sucked. It was 1 to 0. Well, there is a game scheduled today, but it's going to rain so it won't be played. Happy Thanksgiving. I'm not thankful the fricken Yankees had to win.

Relating to the other post -- I also found it odd to hear that someone who has lived in the GTA for a long time had never been on a GO Train. But then just in the last couple of days, after telling people I had gotten to a place by taking trains and buses, I've had two people something like "I don't know anything about how I would do that" -- as though it was something they would never consider because it was too complicated?
It's gotten easier than it has been in the past, now with the Prestocard, and or Google maps able to tell you exactly how to get almost anywhere, without needing to memorize or carry printed timetables. Not that I would necessarily want to do it every day, but a few times a year I go to places in Oshawa, Peterborough, Hamilton, etc., on GO and local transit. Mississauga has been greatly improving their system, with some "transitways", roads that are dedicated entirely to semi-express and GO bus routes.
I get that people who live in rural and even outer suburban locations would probably have trouble living without a car, and taking public transit usually takes longer than driving to get to most (but not all) places, but I really don't understand why so many people still insist on driving into the downtown core every day so they can complain about being stuck in gridlock. I suppose, especially for some older men, there's some kind of strange inexplicable faux-macho or arrogant antipathy about using public transit. One particular "stalky" former TV/radio talk show host sure seemed to have that.

October 9, 2017 @ 10:26 AM

^ should've been "had two people say something ... ".

I'll also add that I've never used Uber, and only been in a taxi twice in my life, both times going along with relatives who had chosen to do so.

All of my life I've lived in Toronto neighbourhoods that weren't particularly Go-friendly. It was always easier and cheaper to take the TTC.

Now I live pretty close to Mimico Station but for the past five years I've biked everywhere possible. The ride to Exhibition Place is super easy.

So yes, it's possible to live in Toronto for four decades and not drive everywhere and never use the Go.

October 9, 2017 @ 9:35 PM

I am mad as hell. The game didn't get rained out, but my Indians lost. It's horrible. They had to lose to the fricken Yankees. It's really awful. This is like last year's world series when they couldn't even close it out. Also my Diamondbacks are done. It's awful. It really is. Also my Suns lost again which is no good.

October 10, 2017 @ 7:19 AM

Yes, my Habs and Coyotes both lost. I don't understand why the Golden Knights are so good. My Habs are doing awful right now. My Cavs also lost. My Indians need to win tonight. Anyway, I fell and hurt my bum. I was walking around the garden path around my building. I made one little wrong turn and it got me lost. Then I felt some rain so I was worried about the rain and I fell somehow. My bum hurts. My lower back hurts. It sucks. I fell. My back hurts. It's probably a bruise or something.

The USA failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1986. That was also the last (and only) time Canada did make it. Now few Americans will be watching next year, while paradoxically just as many Canadians as always will be watching, as no one cared the one time Canada did qualify in 1986. "They threw a parade -- nobody came."

Canadian National Soccer team jersey, or KFC cashier shirt? (scroll down to second message)

To me, it looks like an honest and easy mistake to have made. I did a Google image search for both, and I think if a bunch of the different photos with the logos pixelated were put into an online visual quiz, almost nobody would be able to correctly guess which ones were KFC or Canada Soccer.

Great to see Team USA fail.

American soccer fans are one of the most annoying sports fanbases on the planet, the arrogance and entitlement of Americans combined with the passion of rooting for a relative underdog, ti's just the worst.

Not a FAN of US teams but its not a good thing for Soccer in North America when the US fails to make the World Cup.

October 11, 2017 @ 1:37 PM

It's probably a bone bruise, but it hurts like crazy. Sitting is the worst thing. I can walk okay and stand okay, but it's the sitting stuff. My Indians lost again last night. I don't care about the World Series now. I really don't. Anyway, my Nets and Suns also lost last night. No good. I will be listening to my Cavs tomorrow night and my Habs on Saturday. No more baseball until next year.

Early Open Mike for Oct. Friday 13th UGH, as leaving very early tomorrow morning for 5 days to see my son & his family including 2 grandkids in Ottawa.
The Leafs as of now have scored the most goals of any team & their Power Play is #1 overall. A dismal game last night.
@Cheryl - Your Habs have the least scored goals (5 in 4 games) & their goal differential is the worst in the NHL. There is dissention within the "room" & Bergevin must be soiling his pants not knowing what to do. Cheryl you can wake up next Sept, 2019 as your BBall teams are done, Habs & Coyotes are going down the toilet & your football teams are floundering like fish out of water.
