I am not first. That's because I couldn't find the Open Mike right away. Well, my Indians played a doubleheader last night. They won the first game. Homers by Jason Kipnis and Yan Gomes. They lost the second game though. My Diamondbacks won as well, and my Orioles had a day off. Nice to be on the Hydro Support Programme. I have really low Hydro bills because of it. That's a good thing. Oh, my Ravens won last night as well. My Cardinals play tomorrow night and my Browns play on Monday.

I'm going to be so mad if the Jays don't lock up Josh Donaldson over the winter but if any team is capable of making an easy call a clusterfuck, it'll be the Jays post Edwin fiasco.

You must be an NFL fan if you're watching entire pre-season games. It's difficult to think of many things more pointless than watching two teams of guys who will be cut and be back at their regular day jobs before the real season starts.
Not that pre-season games are much better in the other sports. I see the Leafs are playing three of their pre-season games at the CNE/Ricoh Coliseum instead of the ACC.

Speaking of the CNE -- it's now open.
I might go on a night when one of the tribute bands is on the midway stage.
http://theex.com/main/entertainment/music/midway-stage/
Apparently they do extra-long shows, split into three sets of about 50-minutes each, according what someone told me who saw one of them last year.

On the one hand I soooo want Trump to resign because, obviously. But he's the sort of person who will never quit because his ego is too large. If it ever happens, it will happen like Stephen Harper, wherein he never actually says "I resign" in person, instead a carefully worded memo will be distributed by his staff, and he will disappear into the night.

...or he could be impeached, which would, in essence, put the failure in the hands of the Republicans - this would likely be Trump's preferred style of ouster, because he can go down fighting and never has to admit anything.

Even given this, it is almost preferable in my mind to have him stay in power and continue digging the GOP further and further into a pit of unpopularity, guaranteeing a shift in the balance of power at the midterm elections, losing both the house and senate to the Democrats, rendering Trump a true lame duck.

If he resigns or is impeached now, we will be left with Mike Pence, who will continue to do awful things and possibly shore up support from the right so they persevere at mid-term.

I'm off work today, and will even take next Thursday & Friday off. I am both an employee and self-employed, so I do get to have a flexible schedule. My brother is coming in from Toronto. He and his wife are driving to Alberta and will stop here along the way. I don't think we've seen each other since the late 90's, so this should be fun.

Oh, and he's a Mike, so that just seals it!

Unless you have toddlers (or toddler grandkids), you won't know Splash N' Boots. The easiest way to describe them is to call them Canada's Wiggles.

I'm actually taking the youngest two kids to the CNE on Monday so they can see Splash N' Boots perform.

Here they are... soon they'll be in my basement!

August 18, 2017 @ 1:07 PM

Wow, they look a lot more fun than the likes Of Polka Dot Door and Readalong
back in the day! It seems like the kiddies get a much hipper brand of programming
on offer than the likes at this years' Bandshell. Not that this will stop me from taking
mucho advantage of the final year of the Ex's accessibility policy (meaning free entry!).
Next year when it will cost there will probably be a return to better live music!!

@Rob J

As a guy who only passionately roots for the home team (although I really rooted for Jordan's Bulls before the Raptors existed) what's it like when your out-of-town team wins it all?

I mean, the city you live in isn't abuzz... and there certainly won't be a parade there.

I'm just curious!

August 18, 2017 @ 3:40 PM

Rob J

Great question! When they last won it, after a season which pointed to nothing but getting swept in the NLCS, my reaction after the final out was one of intense relief where I could breathe normally again. It really only sunk in the next day that they were friggin world champs. I've never been a 'parade' type of fan.

It's been so fun following that team since the early 80s, knowing I'm the only one 'round here that does so. Listening to or watching their games well after midnight most summer nights, pumping my fist silently after yet another walkoff win, watching them zoom high atop the standings seeking yet another division title gives enormous satisfaction...I really wouldn't want to share that with other fans! It's kind of like my thing, and my fiends know it's not a bandwagon scenario.

I like the fact that as a kid, I chose a specific team to cheer for, not the fallback position of the team nearest by (which would have been a tossup between the Tigers and your Jays)

It's also made me a better, more independent-minded fan since I'm not immersed in their daily media barrage and don't care to be. It's also made me very suspicious (cynical?) of media homerism, but that's another post.

The tragedy in Spain yesterday with so many casualties & injured.
Most of us don't understand with others trying to make a statement on THEIR behalf & somewhat "beliefs" .
Is this is what the world is coming to? It's sickening & those that see the damage & want to do their own statements for a cause with a truck or another vehicle driving into innocent people.
There has to be conclusion to this type of terrorism somehow.

I don't care about what other people watch. Maybe I should have worded the comment differently. The point I was trying to make was that it's difficult to think of anything in pro sports more meaningless what team wins an NFL pre-season game.

August 19, 2017 @ 1:34 AM

Cheryl

Well, how about those Indians. Wonderful win last night. Jay Bruce homered twice. Also homers by Edwin Encarnacion and Jason Kipnis. How about those Orioles. Great win. Manny Machado homered three times and Mark Trumbo and Caleb Joseph also homered. My Diamondbacks lost though. I have lots of time for sports now that I'm retired. Well, hopefully lots of baseball wins today and my Arizona Cardinals will win as well. My Browns don't play until Monday.

Off to the CNE today for the Warriors day parade. It has been a family tradition for over 35 years, my dad and my father-in-law are WW 2 vets, and both participated every year. Only my father is alive(91 yrs young) and this year is very special as my 11 month old Grandson is coming, making 4 generations of our family participating.

@Mike,
First of all I would greatly appreciate it if this section could be transformed into
a Trump-Rhetoric Free Zone! Secondly, last night I ventured down to the Ex to see the
Burton Cummings concert at the Bandshell. He put on a great show and there were even
some teenage punk rockers who must have gotten lost on the way to the punk fest
"across the street!" Still, I could not help but feel as if I had knowingly ventured into a
mildly rowdy C.A.R.P./Zoomer event. Thankfully no XL undergarments were tossed at the
stage Tom Jones style! And although I feel like an old 44, I undoubtedly helped to bring the
average age of the crowd down a good decade and a half. The crowd was so 'homogenous',
I imagine that this is how it was at a Motorhead or Ramones show back in 1979 or 1980!!

I know you said "never tell me the odds" but I'm an accountant, I can't help myself. The Jays have a 6% chance of making the playoffs

I watch every jays game or listen to it on the radio... but I do not consider this to be meaningful baseball

August 19, 2017 @ 5:31 PM

Rob J

As an outsider, it seems to me their problem is that of 15 AL teams, 12 are still playing meaningful games and only 5 survive.

(please note: this is by no means a criticism of the team, their wonderful fans who aren't twitchy at all, nor their media owners who are unbelievably objective and fair and when they are homers, who cares so is everyone else)

August 19, 2017 @ 5:44 PM

Urooj Islam

Yeah, tough to call these meaningful games. They literally need 7 or 8 times to lost every night to make up ground, almost impossible when those teams constantly play each other.

@collingwood dave ..

Super 1st half today with Argos racking up 35 points. I haven't watched more than the odd CFL game here & there in decades. But after watching the great Argos\Ticats season opener, I've caught quite a bit of the Argo action this season. Ricky Ray & SJ Green are superb.

August 19, 2017 @ 7:59 PM

Was super lucky and an ultra wonderful generous neighbour gave me tickets to Green Day.

Liked them a fair amount as a kid but I wasn't a SUPER FAN. The show was super entertaining. Loved the Dookie tracks, the singles, the Trump rants, pyrotechnics, and especially the medley based around The Isley Brothers' Shout, which included Always Look On The Bright Side of Life, more Trump rants, Satisfaction and Hey Jude.

Never been to a show at the Ampitheatre THAT packed. Must have been completely sold out -- shoulder to shoulder on the lawns.

August 20, 2017 @ 2:55 AM

How about those Indians. Great game. Trevor Bauer has come along. He's a great pitcher. No homers though, but that's okay. My Orioles and my Diamondbacks lost. My Arizona Cardinals also lost. Oh well, my Browns will win tomorrow.

Hi Mike,

So I was wondering about the changes coming to TSN starting Sept 4th. Dan and jay return which is great but my thought is around who gets the goat horns and is tossed?

As both Natasha S and Kate Beirness had the midnight slot for years now where are they going as no mention by anyone except for all the hoopla with Dan and Jay. Who is leaving. As you may have noticed that both Kate and Natasha are now on vacation this week. Hmmmmm? If not them and I hope not. Then who gets the gas at TSN?

August 20, 2017 @ 10:27 PM

Baseball sucked yesterday. My Indians lost. That was no good. Franky Lindor hit a home run, but they lost. My Orioles also lost. That was no good at all. My Diamondbacks lost even though Jake Lamb and JD Martinez both homered. I hope it's a better day today, and my Browns will win as well.

August 21, 2017 @ 8:17 AM

If Kate and Natasha get the boot and need a place to stay, I'll take one for the team.

August 21, 2017 @ 8:56 AM

Wasn't it announced that Jay and Dan would do their thing on one of the TSN channels and that Kate and Natasha would be doing their show on another?

Seems silly to have dueling shows but it could be TSN hedging their bets in case Jay and Dan flop like they did in the USA.

I swear I thought I heard, I think on 680 but maybe it could have been 1010, on one of their newscasts this morning at the end of a segment with a reporter talking about the eclipse, tell people to make sure their dogs and cats were indoors today, as though she thought just merely being outside would somehow damage the critters' eyes? She seemed to be completely serious and not joking. Does she think Fluffy or Fido have been informed about and understood the concept of a partial solar eclipse, and might somehow have looked right at the sun like they would not have done on any other day?

August 21, 2017 @ 5:00 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I just got back from the CNE. Great day with the two little ones... they got to meet Chase (from Paw Patrol!) and Splash N' Boots (who will soon be on Toronto Mike'd).

I remember 1979 and being scared any glance at the sun would permanently blind me. It was frightening for me at that young age.

I didn't tell the younger two anything about today's eclipse, and just told the older two to wear proper glasses so they could enjoy the show. My daughter went to the Science Centre and loved it.

As a best practice, parents should be telling their kids to avoid staring directly at the sun every day. It's never a good idea.

@Rob J,

Almost completely caught up on Casefile. I set aside all the other archives to get through it, but interspersed new episodes from regular podcasts.

@ markosaar

Glad you're digging it! A rare example of someone else liking something I do.

(It's definitely more about the mystery than the resolution)

August 21, 2017 @ 7:28 PM

markosaar

@Rob J,

Oh I know. Obviously I'm hooked, and in general like this sort of thing regardless. It just took me a little while to get used to this format, and the podcast itself to find its step.

That said, the East Side Rapist marathon was ... quite tough to get through. Really the only segment of the entire show that was so rough. Did all 50+ cases really need to be detailed...

Also you're doing the internet wrong if this is one of the rare circumstances :) There are echo chambers for everyone! ;)

August 21, 2017 @ 8:20 PM

Rob J

Re: the East Area Rapist 4-parter...I made the mistake of doing a quick google search on the case as I'd never heard of it, so i knew from the start it was still unsolved! Huge mistake on my part! Incredible that a brazen criminal remains free decades later.

August 21, 2017 @ 9:12 PM

markosaar

@Rob J,

A few times I did a quick search to get an idea of what I was getting into. Felt it was fine for this one ... and it was a FIVE-parter + some bonus interviews, 8+ hours for one case!!!

This one was the most enlightening of the bunch ... like I've seen literally every single Law & Order episode + spin-off, and was always a bit confused when they refer to "M.O." ... well ... here's an example of a real life piece of excrement that actually adhered to an 'M.O.' 50+ times!!!!!

Fuck.

August 21, 2017 @ 11:17 PM

Rob J

It will be a great day when he's finally caught. I hope he listened to the episodes and is crapping his jeans with fear. Someone in his current life MUST know something and have the courage to come forward. Remember, the Unabomber was turned in by his brother who recognized the themes in his manifesto.

For such a prolific criminal still on the lam, I'm surprised the story wasn't in the public eye as so many other crimes from the 70s and 80s still are.

August 21, 2017 @ 11:56 PM

markosaar

@Rob J,

Not basing it solely on this particular podcast, but these things make it clear how vastly different police work became by the late 80s, after computer databases and DNA testing became the norm.

With respect to the aforementioned Law & Order, I haven't seen much of the UK iteration, but that which I did was recycling USA plots -- but with the twist that they did/did not have access to CCTV footage.

August 22, 2017 @ 12:30 AM

Rob J

No doubt if some of the unsolved crimes from the 1960s to the mid 1980s were committed today, they'd be solved in a heartbeat due to DNA testing. However, so many cases (famous and otherwise) are stained by police ineptness, corruption, and ambivalence. I may have stated before on an Open Mike that if I were a victim of crime, I would not trust the authorities to act in my best interests...and I'm white.

August 22, 2017 @ 12:49 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Indians won, but that was close, and they almost lost it. Roberto Perez homered and that's great. My Orioles also won. Lots of homers by Wellington Castillo, Jonathan Schoop, and two by Adam Jones. My Diamondbacks also finally won again. My Browns won as well. That was a great night. Football is going good so far. My Ravens, Browns or Cardinals will wini the Superbowl.

MLB is over a century old and yet you can still see something that's never happened before, like, oh, I don't know, a 10th inning walkoff homer to spoil a no-hitter. Incredible drama and finish!

My Indians lost again. What a shame. Corey Kluber pitched a gem and got no run support, but then what happened was that the pen gave up a bunch of runs. Only good thing was Edwin Encarnacion homered. My Orioles won though. Homers by Manny Machado, Trey Mancini, Wellington Castillo, and Chris Davis. My Diamondbacks lost again though. Well, it's too bad about Kyrie Irving. Why did he want to get traded?
