Sometimes I wonder if it's time to end the Open Mikes, but then I remember Cheryl.

Is her shower fixed?

Has she contacted the CNIB yet?

Is there an employment lawyer out there who can help her?

Even if Cheryl was the only one commenting in the Open Mikes, I think I'd keep them going...

@Allyson
I'll tell you who stole those lunches. It was that damn Sasquatch that's who.

On the note of what i'm watching and what I'm not, The Bachelor would fall into the latter category.
Of what I am currently watching:

Taboo - premiering this week, this gritty Tom Hardy mini series is set in 1814 London. Beautiful looking show. So far so good.

Fuck That's Delicious / Dead Set on Life - Two entertaining VICE entries, similar in that they are hosted by over the top rotund foodies. It's fun and a little unhinged. One is Canadian, the other from the US, but in both cases, these gentlemen may not live very long lives.

Vikings - This History Channel program has gotten a bigger budget in its quest to mimic the grandiose look and feel of Game of Thrones. It's nowhere near the scale, but it's a decent show with good writing, and will hold me over until Better Call Saul returns.

Better Call Saul - not as action packed as BB, but excellent nonetheless, and in some ways, better. And we don't have to put up with the achilles heel of BB - Walt's annoying son and the every whiny Jesse. And, this season on BCS it looks like the return of one of the best tv characters ever - Gus Fring!

Westworld - twas outstanding, but will not return for many moons.

With candidate Trump we has "Pussygate".
With president elect Trump we have "Goldengate"
So is it a stretch to say that once he is president we should expect "Defegate"?
Just asking.

Not that I am supersticious or anything, but a freaky coincidence happened in the early hours of this Friday the 13th. My wife and I were awakened this morning at about 3 A.M. with a loud crash. At first it scared the hell out of us - it could have been anything! Got out of bed and found that a mirror, which had been anchored to the wall, had come loose and crashed to the floor on its own. The frame was broken, but the glass was not. Does that mean three-and-a-half years of bad luck?

A funny yet annoying way to start the day.

Happy Friday the 13th

A number of my riding Friends are making the trek down to Port Dover today. None the i'm aware of on the Bike but i'm sure that some will ride just to say they did.

And sure enough i had a look at live feed and there's a few loons on Harleys cruising up Main Street port Dover.

Mike, I feel Cheryl should contact a "Contract Lawyer". She stated that she was a contracted vendor so she would have a difficult time proving that she was an employee or treated as an employee. Her best bet is to have someone review her contract and analyse the terms and conditions of her contract. If she could not solicit other work per her contract except for the one client she was working with, she have grounds to win a judgment as an employee. If Cheryl was working through an employment agency, she also may have some recourse.

I'm not a big TV show watcher, but I do/have had favourites over the year. One that I wish would turn into more than ten episodes per year is the former A&E, now on Amazon in the US, "Longmire". The show has managed to keep it's edge and grit with decent acting and good scripts with plenty of twists, turns and characters. Just about everyone, including the not-so-obvious characters for it, have things hiding in their closets. Reviews on the fifth (2016) season were good. Season six is set for release this coming September. Longmire even features Canadian content, with the "seems to be everywhere" Graham Greene playing yet another aboriginal (Cheyenne, in this case) character, which adds another line or so to the incredibly long IMDB filmography list for him. If you're not familiar with his name, look him up and you're sure to think "Oh, yeah...HIM."

Keep these going for sure. I want to contribute, just haven't thought of anything interesting, witty or remarkably hilarious to drop here yet.

Here I am. It was so hard to find the open Mike today. Sometimes when they are first posted, they are not on the blog. No, shower is not fixed yet. I got a call from someone who is coming to look at it on Monday. The door closes, but it doesn't close properly. I don't know if they will have to use a jackhammer or not. I hope not. Well, Legal Aid did call today. Actually I talked to the CNIB today and they are going to get a work place assessment done. I gave them the name of my manager. Yesterday, someone from Human Resources called who has a very thick French Canadian accent. I had a hard time understanding him. Anyway, he says that we will try to get things working, and get me reinstated, but it's possible it may not happen and I gave the CNIB his email address. Legal Aid called today and asked me lots of questions and then said I have too many assets and too much income that I can't qualify for legal aid, but she will refer me to someone else because she thinks I need legal advice. Anyway, what a night. My Habs lost. They got clobbered. Carey Price allowed so many goals. My Nets lost and my Suns lost. It sucks.

So in may or so I was predicting that instead of Matthews the leafs would pick Laine. I of course was wrong. But I still think Laine would have been the better fit here in Toronro. Partially because the leafs are ahead of the game a little bit. Meaning they may make the playoffs but get turfed early. Or they will finish just outside the playoff race. Either way it's a mid round draft pick in a not so deep draft. If that happens whoever is selected likely will only see marlies action. And with the upcoming expansion draft the leafs need to be careful what moves they make.

Mike, is there any push to have Bob Cole call a Toronto-Montreal game this season to celebrate the 100 year birthday of the league?

We could debate topics weekly, but in our lifetime Bob Cole has no equal.

@Cheryl
A few comments.

You contacted a lawyer about your job dismissal & he couldn't help you as he/she was involved with employment issues. Lawyers are a fraternity of people who REFER other lawyers who will deal with these situations, much like a doctor or dentist who REFERS you to another in their field. Your lawyer DID NOT do their job or maybe you DIDN'T ask for a referral. Why contact CNIB?
I beleive you are a tenant in a dwelling whereby you pay rent. If you are it's NOT your responsibility to get appliances (including shower doors fixed), it's the owner &/or Landlord that must get the problem fixed at NO cost to you.
You have too many assets & income? I wish!!!
Habs, just like last year - fast out of the gate leading the league by far at XMAS & then fell apart & didn't make the playoffs. 2017 may be a sign of things to come again - Hopefully.

Good Luck with everything

Find his unedited call of the Cup-winning goal in the 1999 playoffs. Horrendous.

Agree with Douglas, Longmire is a good show. We just finished the seasons offered on Netflix, enjoy the characters, the mix of cultures and the Wyoming landscapes. And Katie Sackoff, will watch her in anything.

Another good show is Shetland-cop show set where else? Shetland isles.

I just started watching The Crown. So far so good, love shows with different accents.

Major task this weekend is to take down the Christmas trees and decorations. The house will look so bland!

Does anyone else suffer from dry hands in winter? My fingertips actually split apart and I have tried all kinds of hand creams and ointments. I even use Nuskin (Krazy Glue with a brush) to keep my skin together. The majority of my days are spent either typing or working with massive amounts of paper, so there is no relief.

Had a nice 90s CFNY nostalgic night, finally seeing the Killjoys at the Horseshoe. There were tickets available at the door, but I'm not sure I've ever seen the place more packed. I've definitely never seen crowdsurfers there before.

January 14, 2017 @ 3:11 AM

Cheryl

Wrong. I own my own condo. I have to pay to get my shower fixed. I don't have a landlord. the lawyer I talked to on Wednesday was a human rights lawyer and he referred me to Legal Aid. I contacted the CNIB who referred me to Human Rights. Anyway, I have too much savings to have legal aid so the legal aid person sent me a list of people to contact, but as it turns out work is interested in having the CNIB see what they can do to get me working again. Anyway, my Nets lost. That was no good at all, but my Cavs won. Kyle Korver is a great addition to my Cavs. My coyotes also won. Hopefully my Habs, Coyotes and Suns all win today.

I think he initially thought Modano had scored the winner, not Hull.

It happens. It shouldn't and didn't tarnish an illustrious 40 year career.

January 14, 2017 @ 8:33 AM

The Voice of Reason

@Mike

Bob Cole is to our generation as Foster Hewitt was to the baby boomers. The fact that Bob Cole gets excited and miscalls the odd player actually adds to his persona.

Bob Cole is to hockey as Vin Scully is to baseball.

I cannot think of a play by play announcer in todays game that will be able to replace Bob Cole's legacy.

I enjoy Joe Bowen, but in 30 years Joe will not have the legacy that Bob Cole has today.

January 14, 2017 @ 11:14 AM

Rob J

@TVOR
He first awarded the goal to Modano, then to *Dennis Hull* (he was definitely not on the ice at the time) and then by fluke he mentioned Brett Hull. The way he said, "And the Cup has been won," indicated disappointment and irritation instead of rising to the occasion.
But Cole is a Leaf-homer through and through, so I do forgive him for his lack of detail and enthusiasm for the Stars.
The fact that CBC 'cleaned-up' his call for future use is a black mark.
(Full disclosure: I am a Stars fan)

"Full disclosure: I am a Stars fan"

Clearly! Because nobody else would give it a second thought.

Maybe it's because I'm a Leafs fan, but I've never noticed him being a Leafs homer. Bowen, by definition, is a Leafs homer. But Cole seems moderate to me... I've watched him call many Habs and Sens playoff games with great enthusiasm and memorable calls.

But hey, I'd enjoy Bob Cole calling novice house league. He really is the Vin Scully of hockey.

January 14, 2017 @ 12:43 PM

Rob J

The comparison reminds me again that I've been alive to hear Cole announce (albeit badly) a Cup for my fave hockey team as well as Scully calling multiple World Series titles for my fave baseball team. So sweet.

I've been alive to hear Tom Cheek announce two World Series championships for my fave baseball team, but I only heard the calls after the fact. I was watching both games on television.

I am so worried.I have to take my car into the dealer on Monday to get the air bags replaced. They recalled it,I got a letter in the mail.
It is a big job at the front of the car and I just know they will have to use a blow torch and maybe a chain saw to get at them, plus they will probably leave it messed.
Good thing about this weekend is listening to play-by-play curling on internet radio,Steve is very good.

January 15, 2017 @ 3:06 AM

Cheryl

Great comeback by my Habs. That's awesome and my Suns won as well. That was awesome, but my Coyotes lost. Anyway, Seahawks lost which is not a good thing. Now the only hope I have is for a Chiefs or Cowboys Superbowl. I need those teams to win so I get the money. What was wrong with the Seahawks. Anyway, I have a Nets game tonight. Anyway, so who knows when the CNIB and work will call, but hopefully soon. The shower person is supposed to come tomorrow, but who knows. At first he was supposed to come on Wednesday and then Thursday and then Friday. Then it's just going to be looked at and then who knows if it can be fixed. I mean it's just the shower door not closing properly. They better not have to use a jackhammer. Maybe I'll get a call tomorrow saying that they can't come. Who knows.

If the jackhammer won't remove the door they may have bring in a Bulldozer.

3-on-the-tree

I'm scared...need to bring in my 81 Ford F100 to the shop tomorrow because my tranny is acting up. Its a 3-speed 3-on-the-tree and since they don't make 3-on-the-trees anymore I'm scared they won't be able to get parts. Should've known not to lend my truck to those damn Deheryl boys for their hunting trip in the bush...none of them even know how to drive standard let alone a 3-on-the-tree. Oh well. Good news is my tape deck still works so I can listen to my Sabbath and Motorhead tapes. Also managed to catch my Habs on the am radio last night on my way home. That was a good game!

@J9 - Agreed that the landscapes in Longmire are great, even if they are New Mexico. Filming is done there, as the series was originally a May/June to August fill-in on A&E and now has September releases for Netflix. I read that the filming locations were chosen for their closeness to Wyoming scenery. We get one more season. I am pretty sure that it will be a doozy, as everything, all the diverse but often intersecting plot lines and characters' stories, has to get tied up by the end of episode ten. Good thing they're an hour long without commercials.

January 15, 2017 @ 6:27 PM

Cheryl

Well, football not so good. Cowboys and Chiefs lost. Nobody has the Packers or Falcons so if one of those teams wins, I don't have to pay. Anyway, I don't know if I'll get my shower door at least looked at today. I have no idea. Anyway, I also don't know when the CNIB call and call for the help desk will be. Anyway, who knows what will happen or anything. Anyway, it's Mark Trumbo's birthday, my favourite baseball player so let's all wish Mark Trumbo a happy birthday. My Nets lost last night. That is no good either. Not a good sports day yesterday.

January 16, 2017 @ 7:26 AM

A couple of shows i watched episodes of on the weekend on Netflix caught my attaentionm.

From Dusk till dawn which was a Robert Rodriguez Quentin Tarantino movie . A pretty good one too. The series is basically (so far anyway) the movie script greatly expanded I watched 3 episodes and was pleasantly surprised at how good the whole production is. Not usual for movies turned into Series in my experience.

I also watched Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events , it just came out and has Neil Patrick Harris as count Olaf the horrible Uncle , played by Jim Carrey in the movie of the same name. So far awesome I highly recommend it. I didn't see the movie so i can't compare but the shows are great .

January 16, 2017 @ 12:30 PM

Cheryl

My teams all lost yesterday. My Habs lost. That's no good that they couldn't score any goals. My Coyotes also lost. In basketball, my Cavs got clobbered and I am really worried about my Cavs. They better not keep up this slump. My Suns lost as well. Anyway, shower door is fixed. No jackhammer needed. He just had to make an adjustment and so it got fixed for now. $186.00 just for making an adjustment. That's out of this world. Anyway, someone from the CNIB will be over some time today or tomorrow to look at my computer. The CNIB and work had a talk so the work place assessment is under way. Anyway, so hopefully I can get my job back. Anyway, I don't know why all my teams had to lose yesterday. It's horrible, but Bill told me that since I am not working, not to worry about the football. He doesn't really need the money and I'm in a hardship right now, not working.

January 17, 2017 @ 7:24 AM

@Cheryl
Good your door is fixed, too bad your Teams now have to fixed.
ANYWAY.

January 17, 2017 @ 6:27 PM

Sid_V

@Cheryl, I hope the workplace assessment goes well and they can figure out how to get things working again. The CNIB expert should have a lot of knowledge in getting your work's system working again with your home computer. Good luck.

January 17, 2017 @ 7:48 PM

Cheryl

Well, someone from the CNIB came yesterday. He said that this is the first step. He had to take down all the information. Anyway, he will determine the next steps. Anyway, my Nets lost last night. They were winning at the half, but then really blew it like they played good defense in the first half, but then couldn't anymore. I'm tired of this. Why can't they ever win. None of my other teams played last night.

January 18, 2017 @ 7:30 AM

Cheryl

Not a good hockey night. My Habs lost again. My Coyotes lost again. This is a bad week for sports. Tonight there is a great basketball game with my Suns at my Cavs. It's going to be awesome. Nothing more from the CNIB. Anyway, hopefully something will happen, but who knows. I probably won't be working this week anyway. I'm doing okay though. That shower door fix was an unexpected expense though.
