Well, the CNIB is coming on Monday morning 9:00 to get me set up. I could be working soon after. Then I won't have to worry so much about money. Anyway, bad night for my Habs. What's wrong with Carey Price. He seems to be slumping. Oh well, Coyotes played a great game. No hockey this weekend, but basketball. Nets at Cavs, and I like both, but want my Cavs to win this one. Please start making your free throws. It's great to be first here so this is the first comment.

I'm glad the CNIB is coming. Let us know how it goes.

The Cavs are just napping but they'll be in the finals. The Habs won't be in the finals, thankfully.

Also thankful for the Habs not being in the finals (Or even worse the Senaturds)

My oldest daughter turns 17 this weekend. I was hoping to pick her up a Toronto Mike gift card so she could pick out any merch that the teenage girls love to wear.

Couldn't find a hoodie with Mike's face on it so it looks like she's getting cake and a gift card to the keg .

Road tolls cancelled! that's a $1,248 cost per year cost dodged. Still wouldn't ever ever vote for Wynne because her other stupid decisions will cost me at least that per year

Have taken a bit of a detour this week from my usual free form rock radio uploads on the web site to once gain highlight Canada's top rated FM station from 1972, CKFM and with announcer Carl Banas.

The site has lots of free form content from the likes of David Pritchard, Reiner Schwarz, The classic CHUM FM and CFNY etc but once in a while a detour to the more mainstream part of the dial is made and can be fun from the time capsule perspective.

I've noticed that my facebook is even more political that it was during the run up to the election in November. I'm also noticing that the divide between the "left" and the "right" is getting much bigger that it was not so long ago.

I'm not without blame I've reposted some of the anti trump memes that come across my feed ,mostly due to how funny i find them but still im posting them so I have to acknowledge that I'm contributing to the Noise.

I'm also seeing that people are getting pretty personal with people they disagree with. this is not anonymous web posts but with people they are apparently friends with.

I know this is universal now or at least it seems that way but i really wish we would go back to actually debating issues instead of calling each other names.

for myself i'm going to restrict myself to mostly posting Birthday wishes, pictures of Trains , Guitars ,Motorcycles and of course funny animals.

January 27, 2017 @ 12:12 PM

James Edgar,

I agree. I'm seeing a lot of unfriending going on over politics too, which I maybe saw once or twice ever in the previous ten years of Facebook.

Does this guest still visit the site?

I was reminded of his inspired comments when I was looking up The Rogue Biway: http://www.torontomike.com/2014/07/the_rogue_biway.html#comment-262413

You'll still be paying Toronto, because now Wynne is going to give them some free money which all taxpayers are going to chip in on.

@James Edgar

I noticed what you're describing during the Rob Ford years.

January 27, 2017 @ 1:53 PM

Daniel

@Rob

Agreed, but at least everyone will be paying for this, not just people who drive on 2 highways. Also I drive a diesel, so the gas tax has less of an effect on me

If they really wanted to save money, they would stop giving public sector employees 25 sick days a year + guaranteed pay increases + DB pensions + Bonus + +++... then turn around and spend that money on infrastructure on a yearly basis. but they won't, because that actually requires work

@James Edgar

Makes me glad I got off facebook. People really get divisive and make these extreme statements and act in a way I have never seen them act in real life

Plus the inherent narcissism of posting all your vacation photos, desperate for likes, bragging about your fictitiously perfect life just gets to me.

January 27, 2017 @ 2:14 PM

mrmojorisinca

I left Facebook because I noticed myself turning into someone I didn't like..
petty fighting..glad I left although I do miss speaking to cousins who live outside of Canada

@Mike yes there was quite a bit of that back then too but the venom has been turned up.
@daniel but what about the funny cat pics??????

I avoid facebook like the plague. I've never had an account and I never will sign up. My ex mom-in-law wants me to sign up so I know what's going on with the family. I love her for it and I'm honoured they still think so well of me, but I just won't do it.

I can't remember if I got this link from Google or from Javed Jafri's site -- been all over the place this evening -- but it was Javed who reminded me I was a big Carl Banas fan in the 70's and 80's.

http://rockradioscrapbook.ca/radckfm.html

Check out Javed's site too (he posted earlier). It is a goldmine.

I have refrained from posting on facebook as debates on Trump or Trudeau doesn't seem to ever end very friendly.
@Daniel, funny how public sector wages/benefits etc. are always the elephant in the room, no matter what province you are in. I have been working in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia the last couple of weeks, and the Nova Scotia teachers are returning to work to rule (almost can't remember when any teachers group wasn't doing this) as 2 more days the Teachers Union thought they negotiated as days off in the recent contract, have the government believing they use these days for Prep,marking or Professional Development. Doesn't anyone negotiate in plain language any more?
http://globalnews.ca/news/3209993/nova-scotia-teachers-returning-to-work-to-rule-monday/

Heres the quote "The union said in a release they have “lost trust” in Premier Stephen McNeil after remarks that the two extra days off allotted in the latest offer would be considered marking or prep days, rather than actual days off".
In a 175 day (minimum) work period they need an extra 2 days off plus sick days? The cost is around $20 million, which for us Torontonians seems small potatoes, but given the deficit her is $241 million, it is a significant number.
If you aren't working for the government down here you are barely getting by.

Thinking of doing a trip to Quebec City next month. Has anyone stayed anywhere nice in or around the city?

BTW: Hi everyone, trying to catch up on all my socials. =)

I'll let you know how the CNIB goes. I got a confirmation email yesterday and this is just an evaluation since work set me back up again for the evaluation. Anyway, so that's what will happen. My Cavs won last night over my Nets. It's about time that happened. I really don't know what's wrong with my Habs, but they will win the cup.

January 28, 2017 @ 7:41 AM

Javed Jafri

I have a Facebook account but do not actually use it for some of the same reasons mentioned here but I keep the account as you need Facebook to access certain content.

January 28, 2017 @ 12:06 PM

Javed Jafri

Thank you Blind Dave for the mention. Re Carl Banas on CKFM - the early 70's from CKFM has a "Space Age Bachelor Pad" type and retro charm.

A contrast to be sure from the free form, underground and alternative radio that I like to feature.

The Voice of Reason

It appears that my prediction of Trump being good for American jobs at Canada's expense is becoming a reality. GM is shifting 600 ONTARIO jobs from Cami in Ingersoll to Mexico.

I would like to have access to the auto bailout contract that our Liberal Government signed in 2009. We the taxpayer covered 20% of the bailout and it seems OUR investment did not have any guarantees of long term sustainable employment.

The Mcginty/Wynne legacy of incompetence will scare us for the rest of our lives.

@The Voice of Reason

Humour me by leaving the pro-Trump rhetoric off my site. One week of his rule has me completely grossed out.

I'm sure there are other sites and forums where you can pump his tires.

Thanks.

January 28, 2017 @ 12:32 PM

The Voice of Reason

Mike I am not pro Trump. I am anti Wynne. I feel it is sad that we do not have a leader on any level in this country that place Canada first.
Trudeau ran on the premise to run deficits of less than $10 billion in each of the first three years of its mandate, still reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio each year and balancing the books in the final year. Trudeau has acknowledged the deficit will exceed $10 billion this year and that it will be difficult to balance in the fourth year. A study was released just this week that if you are an 18 year old person in Canada today, you will NOT see a balanced budget for another 56 years at this rate.
Mike, if those numbers don't frighten the average Canadian, they should.

January 28, 2017 @ 12:47 PM

Blind Dave

@TO MIke @ VoR

I read the above as being anti-Trump and anti-Ontario Liberal, but pro Ontario/Canada. If we are collateral damage to such things then that is a real shame.

Top 100 NHL players of all time.
Omissions - Malkin, Micheal Goulet (5th top scorer), Hawerchuck, Belfour with 3rd most wins in history.
Shanahan, Datsyek, REALLY? Kane & Keith (a few good years & too less time in NHL)? Towes a pick for sure.
Where did Pogge, Toskala, & my fave John Scott who was MVP in last years AllStar Game rank?

January 28, 2017 @ 2:27 PM

The Voice of Reason

Andrew, I recall the classic Montreal/Toronto argument when Pogge and Price were drafted. Where is Junstin Pogge today?

One certainty, Patrick Kane has not done enough to be on this list.

I know Facebook gets lots of hate, but I can't imagine not being on it. It's really how most people communicate now. So if I want to see pictures of my nephew or my cousin's kids or keep up with friends and family, I need to be there.

I don't have to post... and I'm careful to only follow actual friends and family (I think I have 50 FB friends)... but I'm glad I'm there.

I went to school in Halifax for 4 years. No matter how badly things were going in the rest of the world Halifax never felt it. Its because it's a government town. Maritime gov + Navy + 3 major universities meant everybody was always gainfully employed with 3.5% pay raises no matter what was going on with the Canadian economy.

People shouldn't get this level of job security or benefits or salaries. Not when its the hardworking taxpayers paying for it

@Lorne

The Alt hotel Quebec was the best hotel I've ever stayed in my life. Its pricey (unless you're working on a 1.4b takeover and the client is paying for your accommodations) but its incredible

Basketball was not good last night. My Nets and Suns both lost. That's no good, but my Cavs play today so that's a good thing and hopefully they can win. Why is it so hard to make free throws. Well, tomorrow is when the CNIB comes. I don't have a return to work date yet. Hopefully it will come soon.

January 29, 2017 @ 7:50 AM

We stayed in the Hotel Chateau Laurier for Carnaval a few years ago - it was right in the old section of town and very nice. It is independent, and not too fancy but very comfortable.

I took a break from Facebook for a month and didn't really miss it. I have been unfollowing people ( not unfriending them) lately and it has drastically improved my Facebook experience. There are three things that will get one of my friends unfollowed - talking about how great Trump is, incessantly dropping f-bombs, or posting excessive numbers of selfies with washed-up performers you happened to see at a casino (I'm talking about you, Sha Na Na fanboi!)

January 29, 2017 @ 11:05 AM

Great basketball game yesterday. My Cavs won. That's a great thing. Anyway, today is the day. CNIB will be here in a couple hours. I don't have a return to work date yet. I think the chances are 50-50 that I will be working tomorrow. They would have to figure out how to make the new software work and then work would have to reinstate me. There was an email from work to me copied to the CNIB saying what my new password is so hopefully I can get reinstated. Anyway, Cavs will win again tonight I hope.

Looking forward to Men's curling this week.Howard will go all the way I know he will anyway.I have him in the big pool anyway .I know he will make all his shots anyway
I hate basketball

January 30, 2017 @ 4:51 PM

Cheryl

Well, my trainer isn't curling in the provincials and neither is Kean. I haven't been following it as much this year. Basketball sucked last night. My Cavs, Nets and Suns all lost. My Cavs can't afford to lose many more games. I need them to stay on top since my Suns and Nets aren't winning. Anyway, the CNIB was here yesterday morning. There is nothing they can do. It's up to my work to make the software more accessible. They took notes and pictures and will contact work. I don't know when I will be working. I know what it's like to lose your job. Ingrid probably could just go ahead and retire. I mean she probably gets a good package, I don't. She can go ahead. She's probably in her 60s already as she was around when I was a kid and I thought she was rude. She can just retire, nothing to worry about here.

January 31, 2017 @ 7:19 AM

Hurrie Haaarrrd

Howard is 3 and O at the curling thats great.He will be 5 and O after today.It is great anyway that his son Ron Howard can get time off his job on tv to play also anyway.Roy is coming over to watch curling today

I don't see the big deal with Facebook. I don't have it installed on my phone, but can still check the mobile site if I need to look something up. It's good for event planning.

I use it very passively... works a bit like a telephone book really, but only for people I actually don't mind getting in touch with me.

I used to enjoy it and engage with it a lot more, but the more corporate it got, and the more family and colleagues joined, the less fun it got.

January 31, 2017 @ 1:42 PM

Totally agree

re: Toronto Mike ‏@torontomike 29m29 minutes ago
@1236 I can't imagine paying $49.95 to hear DoFo speak

Totally agree. They'd have to pay me much more than $49.95 to suffer through listening to Doug Ford speak.

January 31, 2017 @ 5:13 PM

Cheryl

My Habs finally won a game. Awesome. Max Pacioretty with a hattrick. Alexander Radulov with another goal. Habs are winning the cup. Coyotes not so good. Another loss. My Cavs play tonight. Hopefully a win. They need to win. Anyway, nothing new on the work front. There was this mass memo from our property manager yesterday about garbage. People are putting the wrong thing into the green bin that shouldn't be there and she says that if this continues to happen, the city will refuse to pick up garbage from our building and we will have to pay a lot more. I don't know how much more we will have to pay, but I called the city to confirm what I'm putting in the green bin and the guy I talked to said I'm doing the right thing, but somebody is not and I don't know who that somebody is, but I want to kill them because they don't put the right stuf in the green bin. I really don't know how I'll be able to pay more. I'm not working now. The manager keeps spelling cooperation with a hyphen making it co-operation. She doesn't even know how to spell. There's no hyphen there. Co is a prefix. You don't hyphenate after a prefix.

February 1, 2017 @ 7:43 AM

Cheryl

Great Cavs win last night. That was awesome. Now can we put together another big win streak. My Nets and Suns didn't do very well. That was no good. Actually my Nets were winning, but they choked in the fourth quarter. Anyway, hockey tonight. Habs play the Flyers and will beat them. Coyotes play the Blackhawks and will beat them. It will be a great hockey night tonight. I don't know what they'll do about garbage. The person who is putting the wrong thing in the green bin should be the one who has to pay. I don't know why everyone has to pay. They don't care if I'm not working. Anyway, you don't put a hyphen in cooperation. It's just cooperation. Coordination doesn't have a hyphen in it either. You see, co is a prefix. It's not a word on its own so no reason for the hyphen.
