Shocking news that Nico Rosberg, newly minted Formula One driving champion, is retiring at age 24. Full respect to someone who focuses on a huge life goal, and is willing to walk away as soon as he achieves it.

I am second today, not in a great mood. Basketball sucked last night. My Cavs lost. That was an ugly game. There were so many fouls. I can't believe it. The Clippers got away with so much. That's two in a row my Cavs lost. They better win tonight, but it's the tail of a back to back. My nets lost as well which also sucks. My Coyotes lost so hockey wasn't good either. It all sucked. Cowboys won last night which is good for my pool.

I don't think the 2016-17 Cavs are particularly interested in the regular season. They'll probably win the conference, but they don't really care if they do or not. They'll be in the Conference finals regardless, and will probably be back in the finals again.

I'm pretty excited that MLB got a new cba. Here's hoping the stove heats up now.

I'm hoping the jays sign Fowler. Getting Adam Eaton from the white sox would be nice too, but the price would be quite high.

MLS questoin for a bandwagon jumper

Why is it aggregate score for two games in the quarters and semis but one game for the final?

December 2, 2016 @ 10:17 AM

Daniel

All soccer finals do this. Not just MLS. its just the way its been.

1 game with extra time if there's a tie and penalties after that

@ Sid_V shocking yes but he's 31 not 24 .
Still young in the real world but not as much in F1. Not many drivers have the fortitude to stop at the top so kudos to him.

It's fantastic we managed to secure home field advantage for the MLS final. It should be the first MLS match to have a million viewers on TSN.

Unlike soccer (which I still can't get into despite the TFC success), I've been watching F1 for a decade now. The sport has been characterized for a long time by stars hanging on for too long. Happens in all sports, but there's a difference between a multiple world champion who was at the peak of their sport struggling in his later years than say, Vince Carter re-defining himself as a good role player in his later years. Still, Rosberg's decision is shocking.

When was the last top athlete in pro sports to just quit in his prime and go out on top? Only Sandy Koufax comes to mind and that was decades ago.

Used to love F1 back in the Hakkinen, Coultard and Schumaker rivalries. But then I started feeling like all that really mattered was the first lap of the race, then the rest of the race was almost already decided

El Classico tomorrow!!!!!!! (Thats Madrid vs Barça)

Little known fact, did you know that they were thinking of naming the toronto soccer team Real Toronto... that's so embarrassing. Like the combined lack of knowledge of Sports and languages which would make you even consider naming a team that...

My twins (Kids-Men) are 25 years old today. It was a journey seeing to become what they are today. It was a struggle at times but wifey & I survived.
Both are doing well - graduated from Univ. & have good full time jobs in their curriculum.
Older brother (3 minutes) decided at last minute to celebrate with his brother (married with 1 son & daughter due in Feb.) & took day off work to drive to Ottawa.

There is a special bond between them & I'm still trying to figure it out. Apart there is little communication between them but when together They are MY BOYS.

Proud of both of them

It blows my mind that sports media members struggle with the concept of the away-goals rule, but the can spew off difference between CFL vs NFL or NHL vs KHL.

A person who rarely gets credit when it comes to coverage of TFC but has recently done a good job of it is Dean Blundell. We're all aware the TFC at the moment is the flavour of the month, but across many sports shows I give Dean the most credit in actually seeming interesting, learning the language of the sport, listening and responding to guests and legitimately showing interest. The worst in my opinion has been Dave Naylor who does one of several things when the topic of TFC comes up. 1) Tries to relate it back to CFL somehow, 2) Barely talks, 3) That he doesn't understand the sport. Being the host of a general talk show entails general knowledge about sports and he is lacking.

I am fully aware of my bias.

December 2, 2016 @ 3:53 PM

Barry Sanders is my go-to guy for an athlete who left the game early; my 2nd player is Eric Cantona.

Other notables that I remember watching, but are not yet mentioned: Carlos Roa, Anika Sorenstom, Bjorn Borg and Ken Dryden, all retired healthy when they left their respective sports.

I'd include Magic, but he retired due to HIV.
George Best walked away at 26 only to return a couple of years later to the NASL, which is where I saw him play.

Then there is the guy that played for the 49'ers, 2 or 3 years ago, after a very good rookie season, he retired from the NFL because of fear of injury.

Why wouldn't they have the MLS game at the dome? It would definitely sell out and weather won't be a factor. For all we know there could be a snow storm on Dec 10.

I cannot believe it has been five years since the Wonder Twins of Rogers and Bell bought the Leafs, Raptors and TFC. Even with all the miscues since then like hiring Lieweke, the revolving door at TFC, etc., it does not feel that long ago.

December 2, 2016 @ 5:59 PM

stephen

Some hard times there, Sid.

Hard to believe that the Raptors, Blue Jays & TFC appear to have turned the corner on respectability and could be starting to put some distance from mediocrity; and the Leafs are closing in being respectable.

What direction will the Argos go in?

Would never have guessed any of this was possible under the ownership of Bell, Rogers and/or Tannenbaum.

Liking your High Park / Humber River bike route. I have discovered a new way to get errands done: If I need to go to Canadian Tire, I don't drive to Sherway. I ride my bike north on the Humber River trail to the Canadian Tire at Weston/401. There's 5-6 blocks of on-road cycling at the top, but it's a great ride.

What a night. My Habs lost. This is two in a row. I said they weren't going to lose two in a row. This sucks. They better win tomorrow. Cavs lost again. This also sucks. Our Xmas shopping is done, and I have managed to say "Merry Christmas" to one person. I am so pleased with myself. :)

I suppose I'm a kinda sorta bandwagon jumper for TFC. I haven't watched soccer in a very lone time, but I remember being fond of the 70s-80s league that had the Toronto Blizzard and Vancouver Whitecaps. There was even a commercial, 7-Up I think, that had a clip of a Whitecaps player heading the ball. The player may have been Bob Lenarduzzi. Then there was that great soccer show on Channel 47 with Dale Barnes. Two hours every Saturday afternoon and they covered many of the world's leagues.

What a night. It was no good. My Coyotes lost. They had a 2 to 1 lead, but Columbus scores in the last few minutes and then they win in a shootout. Basketball was not good. My Nets and Suns both lost. This really sucks. I am not having a good sports weekend at all. I need wins and I desperately need a Cavs win on Monday. I need one so bad. I hope I get football wins as well, but who knows. Ravens and dolphins are both in my pool, but really need a Ravens win today. Hopefully my Habs can bounce back.

December 4, 2016 @ 4:58 AM

H.o.E.

@GDB -- If there is a snow storm on Dec. 10, they could use an orange ball instead of a white one. Soccer can be played in the snow.
As for the dome and it's crappy artificial turf (or temporary grass that was terrible the last time it was used for soccer during a Brazil-Chile game there three years ago), I'm not even sure if it's still possible for the 100 level seats to be moved into the parallel configuration they used for football and soccer. When part of the concrete floor was broken up early in 2016 to install the new dirt infield for the Jays, at least one news article stated the seats were now permanently in baseball mode, although contradicting that now is Ticketmaster seating maps for upcoming Supercross and Monster Truck events showing the (non-baseball) parallel configuration.

@Daniel -- I think "Inter Toronto" was the cringe-inducing name that was being considered at one point. I don't remember 'Real' ever being mentioned, and there was already the Salt Lake team in MLS using that embarrassing name.

@stephen -- "What direction will the Argos go in?"
Hmm -- maybe Downsview? (at their practice field), Oshawa? Halifax?
But seriously, it will be interesting to see what happens if/when Bell and Tanenbaum eventually get tired of the mostly empty stadium and losing millions every year on the Argos with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Rosberg suddenly retiring was a surprise.
I haven't paid much attention to F1 in the last few years, since I found out there was so much sports car racing freely available from around the world on the internet.

And -- people still pay attention to TV ratings? Do you also still talk about magazine and newspaper circulation? Search for the G&M article "Kate Taylor: Numeris is calling, but Canadians need more information about TV ratings". Never mind the fact that there may be few people left under 35 still paying for traditional cable/satellite TV service. Numeris has to call people at home and get them to agree to use a "meter" to monitor their viewing habits. Does anyone under 60 still have a home phone and answer unsolicited calls from unrecognized numbers? Are these alleged TV ratings determined by extrapolating the viewing habits of a few dozen senior citizens to be representative of the entire country?

December 4, 2016 @ 9:41 AM

Sid_V

@HoE, the seats in the dome can still be moved but it is no longer a quick-change operation (48 hrs was the turnaround time before the changes last winter). The field can be switched for large one-off events, but not back and forth on a regular basis. I think it has to do with changing the turf more so than moving the seats - removing the dirt infield and restoring the new baseball turf is more intensive than just rolling up the old carpet and lowering the pitcher's mound.

Was out biking today & see that the demolition has begun @ bloor/yonge. Too bad all these character buildings are going to replaced by the generic condo/shop ones. Same thing is going to happen at Bloor/Bathurst with Honest Ed's closing Dec. 31.

Too bad for ED, such a great store. Where else can u get goods from all over the world, not just CHINA. Remember this chocolate covered pretzel bar from Israel. Gold Jerry, Gold!!!!!. Ed's wasn't for everyone, u know the Oshkosh, Gap douches, but it was good for the people. Who else in this city gives out free turkeys. Not even the banks do that. Ed was one of a kind, his son, not so much to sell out to some developer from BC.

@ Gordon
To date a woman like Mulligan was probably Bullard's apex. Stalking aint that funny.

December 4, 2016 @ 2:17 PM

Patrick

Tom - A real shame as I suspect Ed's sons probably resent all the stuff their father did with Honest Ed's and the community growing up and were more than happy to sell off the building and what not once the old man passed away to get the cash they want. I wouldn't be shocked if behind closed doors they are ashamed of the store and what their father did.

On another topic - anyone know why CP24 is bringing back Jill Colton for their weekend show but only making her sit outside for weather hits and not even get a couch spot? It seems a bit odd after she was in hosting for so long after Nneka left and they brought in that new gal.

To an outsider it also seems like something is up with their lineup of hosts, reporters and such. Has there been quietly a few layoffs or something that hasn't been reported?

A question for all Capricorns.

My 2 boys were born Dec. 2nd, my grandson born 12/13/14 (Dec 13), & I was born Dec. 29th.
Was a gift ever given to you during Dec. was for Xmas & also for your BDay?
We have never done that but myself growing up was a constant with relatives. A 1 for 2.
My twins always had their day - be it in December or another day to celebrate.
Wrapping paper is there such a thing a 1 side Christmas & other side Birthday for us?

Both days are special to all of us & for those reading that were born in Dec. Happy Birthday & Merry Christmas.

I also feel for those born Feb. 29th a birthday every 4 years.

re: twins from bolton - I have three nieces born btwn Nov 22-Dec 31st - their parents ensure bday and Cmas kept separate.

@Gordon - as a woman, it's sad to see a male say he'd expect this behaviour from any male. It isn't you - it's society that needs to reinforce no meaning no, and emphasize the needs for ways in which to transition out of relationships ending in healthy ways.

I'm stoked for the TFC and their fans - well deserved! I am a newbie Raps fan so just attempting to even track their progress this year is tough.

December 5, 2016 @ 11:15 AM

Douglas

@ Sandy - Agreed. As I used to listen to Buffalo radio a lot in the 80s and 90s, unlike most of their fans now, I was aware of and liked their earlier material, which was usually full of energy, even on the "slow" songs. The 'Dolls lost me after "Gutterflower" when they became much more mainstream pop-ish rock. Only the few big hits get played on air anywhere but in Buffalo or Rochester, and I don't think anything from this year's release, "Boxes", got any radio play at all. I suspect we're not missing anything there.

Well, how about those Cavs. Great that they won. Wish it wasn't so close though, but a win is a win. Thank goodness they won. They needed it. Thanks Cavs. My Nets didn't do so well. Lost another close one. Not a good thing. Anyway, hockey not so good. Coyotes lost last night again. Hopefully they can win tonight and my Habs will win tonight. Anyway, knee pain really sucks. I have some again today. My trainer said he would take me skating, but if my knee doesn't get better before 11:00, chances are I can't go. It's down the right side of my right knee. I had it before and it went away but now it is back and it hurts. Also I'm out of work. I was going to type for another hospital as I can't use the hospital's new software, but then I got the new hospital's software installed and there is a little thing that my speech software won't read and so I am out of work until they can sort things out meaning money is going to be tight. Oh well, what can I do. Well, the good thing was my Cavs and hopefully they can beat New York tomorrow.

Knee is better this morning for now. Funny how it comes and goes. Anyway, still no work. I get the same old song which is hang in there. I'm tired of the same old song. I want action. They should pay me anyway because all this is not my fault. If they would test software out to see if it worked with Jaws, then this wouldn't happen, and yes, there is a way to do that. Get a demo copy of Jaws absolutely free. Anyway, so this really sucks. Anyway, my Cavs did win last night and won big. They won just for me. They're an awesome team and my Nets squeaked out a win as well. My Suns lost though. Hopefully my Habs and Coyotes can win tonight. A couple key players out for my habs for four to six weeks, Alex Galchenyuk and David Desharnais. Not good. They're both out. Well, put Carey Price in and he can steal games.
