Hmmm, EE turns down 4 years @ $20mil for 3 years @ $20 mil????
Don't think the BJ's are the losers here. EE should fire his agent.

Merry Christmas all!

Thank you, Edwin!

Good luck in Cleveland. We're worse off for having lost you, regardless of how it happened.

I'm thinking his agent get fired soon.

So after getting by just fine with the All seasons that came with the car the few winters i had to break down and buy snow tires last week. the all Seasons are getting worn and my wife couldn't manage them in snow so snow tires it is. judging by the forecast not a bad idea anyway as "they" are predicting a heavier snowfall this winter than we've seen lately anyway.

I thought it looked a bit low wednesday morning and stopped and filled it up on my way to work. it was at about 10lbs , being a new tire i thought maybe the mechanic goofed and didn't properly fill it. it looked fine yesterday but i didn't have time to check it and forgot frankly until i went to go home last night. the tire was flat :( It took air from my emergency pump and stayed up to pressure until i got home ( too late to go to can tire where i bought the snows to have them look)

This morning tire was flat when i went to go get in the car again, luckily i left the house early to deal with that and it's at canadian tire now. Not a happy camper though, annoying to have to deal with this on the 23rd of Dec!

Hopefully they sort it by lunch time I have to start my christmas shopping later this afternoon!

December 23, 2016 @ 10:05 AM

Cheryl

Well, what a Christmas present I got. I lost my job. I thought maybe this would happen, but I lost my job. I got terminated today. Not my fault. Fault is that software doesn't work at all because there are more and more graphics in the software. Well, for now money is okay. I just have to be careful. Anyway, so it's like medical transcription software no longer works with Jaws. Anyway, not good. Now I hate Christmas even more. It sucks. Also my Habs lost another one. Sucks. My Nets lost as well. Well, my Nets play my Cavs tonight. Two favourite teaqms. Should be a good game.

Toronto Mike thank you for a year of great guests

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to every one.

I'm planning to listen to the Denise Donlon podcast, and congrats on the "get". I specifically remember her for hosting the "Too much for Much" shows, which showed videos which were not even that offensive even back then, let alone now. Although I agreed that NIN's Slavery video went too far. I also remember when she was the head of Sony Canada, when she was berating Napster and its clones for cutting into the record companies' profits. Without hearing your interview yet, I sort of wished someone would ask her about those experiences.

Also, as a future topic, it would be great to list some lesser-known Toronto + area bands from the 70s, 80s, 90s that we wish would be still around. Some of mine: Marilyn's Vitamins, hHead, Tuuli...

Now only if you can get Chris Sheppard on your cast...

It's early, but it's the thought that counts, right? Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah/Hanukkah (choose your preferred spelling), Happy Festivus, etc. to all the TorontoMikers out there!

For the third year in a row, I "lose" the annual seasonal "challenge" that my brother and I have: Who will avoid or be the last to hear Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad"? I am at a huge disadvantage, as the office reception radio is on CHFI. This year's "loss" came at a mall in Cambridge, though. It was only this past Tuesday that I heard Jose at work. Both my brother and I agreed on one thing, though, that being that the most-played more-modern Christmas song seems to be Paul Mccartney's "Wonderful Christmastime". Try getting THAT one out of your head after you've heard it.

To close on a more upbeat note, I suggest/present the UK's number one Christmas song for several decades running now. It was written in tough times in the UK, but with a positive view to "look to the future now, it's only just begun". May that be a good wish for all of us.

headsup

@Cheryl

So sorry to hear about your termination.
If it is a software issue that they terminated your work over, I am sure that the Ontarians With Disabilities Act would have something to say about that.
If the company is unwilling to provide you with an accessible work environment, the law is on your side. You should be able to get your job back, or at least a generous compensation beyond your severance pay.
You should seriously look into this.
What they have done to you is not just wrong but it is illegal in the province of Ontario. You have rights.

@Cheryl

I'm very sorry to hear this. Please remember this, you are not your job. You are Cheryl, and you will be fine.

Keep your chin up and let me know via these Open Mikes how things are going. Any company that would let you go on December 23 isn't a company that deserves you.

December 23, 2016 @ 11:53 AM

Douglas

@Cheryl - sorry to hear about your job loss. Mike's words are excellent, and the advice of headsup is sound. Please consider this a low point, and it's upward and onward from here. Good luck from me and likely everyone here on TM.

December 23, 2016 @ 12:02 PM

headsup

I strongly believe that this EE situation is not just about his agent not doing what was best for his client. It speaks to the pure ineptitude of the Blue Jays front office. Someone needs to tell Mark Shapiro that he doesn't work for Cleveland anymore. He either doesn't know how or have an interest in building a winner in Toronto. His heart is still in Cleveland, and so Mr. Shapiro should just drag his sorry can back there too.

December 23, 2016 @ 12:03 PM

James Edgar

@Cheryl sorry to hear about your job. That really is horrible timing.

Take mike's advice it's very good.

December 23, 2016 @ 1:24 PM

GUNTER

@Cheryl
Please take the advice above.
You have been terminated illegally.
Your company is definitely in the wrong, even if the software they use no longer works for you. This is illegal.
And what a terrible company that does this on 23 December!
Please - get legal advice as soon as possible.
Try and and enjoy the holidays. Even just some comforting food or enjoy your sports teams and listen to some bob seger with a nice beverage and relax.

December 23, 2016 @ 1:40 PM

T

Anyone that thinks it is the BlueJays blunder doesn't get it. The Bird was offered 4/80M, that's like winning the lottery 80 yrs in a row. But that aint good enough for the Bird. All these sports megalomaniacs need a reality check. They are delusional.

& he kept saying he wanted to spend the rest of his career playing for the Jays?

Sorry about the obscene language Mike, but FU Edwin.

December 23, 2016 @ 2:47 PM

dale (Bolton)

Merry Christmas to all of you commenters & especially you Mike for keeping this blog ongoing.
Cheryl - you have to seek legal advice as mentioned by others. Your workplace has to provide you the proper tools & info to do your job. If they can't it's THEIR responsibility to make sure you have it.
Go Columbus Blue Jackets Go - my sisters nephew Josh Anderson plays with the Jackets & having a good season so far after winning the Calder Cup with Lake Erie Monsters (CBJ farm team last year),

All the best everyone

This evening while watching the Montreal / Columbus game there was a commercial for some cold thing (sorry didn't catch the name) but the spokesman is some old hippy with grey hair and beard. As soon as I heard his voice it was Dick Smyth. For those of us who remember chum am in the 70's getting Dick or even Brian Henderson would enjoy if you could get either as guests.

December 23, 2016 @ 8:31 PM

Blind Dave

@Cheryl

Take the above advice. You deserve better compensation. You are also not your job, as was stated above. I've lost a few jobs over circumstances beyond my control and it sucks no matter what.

@TM

Your podcast is rocking and it's the best podcast on the internet, bar none. Thanks to you and all of your guests for some great interviews.

Merry Christmas, all! Be safe & happy!

Bottom line about the Blue jays. Mr. Shapiro inherited a 1st place team and in less than 2 years turned them into a team that will not make the playoffs . That said he has done exactly what the owner of the team wanted , increased profits while cutting costs.
The losers, Toronto the city and Toronto Blue Jay fans.

December 24, 2016 @ 5:16 AM

Cheryl

Okay. Thanks for the advice. Problem here is I was an independent contractor. I asked about compensation and I can't get any because I am an independent contractor. Anyway, my dad and his wife told me the same thing that chances are very slim a lawyer will help. Well, they were screwing around with me a couple weeks before this all happened. Anyway, and there are some other people on a mailing list I am on who say the same thing that the software for medical transcriptionists is becoming less and less blind friendly, has more graphics so it doesn't work with speech software. Anyway, my Habs and Coyotes lost. At least my Cavs won. They're the team I can depend on winning because my others are slumping. My Cavs beat my Nets. It's so good to have my Cavs doing so well.

December 24, 2016 @ 7:22 AM

Merry Christmas everyone... Happy Holidays or Season's Greetings. Whatever you choose to celebrate, celebrate it with the ones you love.

I hope this year becomes the year of civility. After the shit show that was 2016, I really hope people will start to think about people as just that. People.

I know it's a lot to ask, but one can hope.

Cheers,

Andrew

@ Andrew
I understand.
This morning I was surprised when a knock on the door & I see a OPP police car in front of my driveway. HOLY SHIT?? WTF.
I answered & cop with a kid (9-10 years old) & I said what is going on is there a situation.
"No Caledon OPP & kids want to thank you in person for donating to our Shop with Cops Program this year as it makes a difference for all". A thank you hand written note was given. I donated again this year to make a Christmas for those less fortunate.
This made my day - tears in my eyes, a cherishing moment.

I just watched a video of PK Subban helping out some kids in Nashville and Montreal this year. Like him or not on the ice, PK does great things in his communities and sets a high standard for how a pro athlete can make a difference. Well done, PK!

Partisanship aside, does anyone really believe a politician anymore?

I've just watched Trudeau's year-end message, and I ask myself, who believes this crap?

Is our PM really this fucking naive? ....shallow? .......daft? .......easily manipulated?

I felt the same contempt when Harper spewed his rhetoric; but I viewed Harper as a shrewd and conniving bastard.

Martin was good, he was animated, and you wanted to believe in what he had to say, but you knew he was full of shit too; and Chretien, he was no different, just a taller pile of shit once you figured out what the fuck he was on about.

But Mulrooney, he was the biggest and best at telling folks what they wanted to hear - what a fucking-piece-of-work he was; when he spoke, you could even smell the shit!

Happy Holidays, everyone.

And remember, 2017 will be that much more expensive, and you can thank politicians at every level, for making it so much more expensive than it needs to be.

December 24, 2016 @ 9:45 PM

Cheryl

Well, sucks to lose your job a couple days before Christmas. Anyway, I'll be okay I think as I have a plan. If I do find a job, I will be lucky. They were screwing around mith me for a couple weeks though before all this happened. I am on the Hydro support programme though. I applied for that a couple months ago and didn't think I would get it, but I got it. Anyway, Browns won last night. Surprise and Cardinals also won. My Cavs and Ravens will win today. I need them to.

December 25, 2016 @ 7:49 AM

Cheryl

Well, I needed that win. My Cavs were losing pretty big, but they ended up winning in the fourth quarter. That was so awesome and they win by a point. My Cavs are so good. My Ravens sure blew it though. They couldn't hold the lead. They will miss the playoffs. Oh well, I have a Cavs game tonight so that's good. Anyway, so thank goodness Christmas is over so we won't have to hear about Christmas stuff until next year. They were playing Christmas music through the Cavs game yesterday and Friday. When they went to commercial, there was a bit of Christmas music after the commercial. I didn't like that.

December 26, 2016 @ 7:39 AM

Cheryl

What a night. My Cavs and Suns both lost. My Cavs decided to rest Lebron again. What they should have done was just reduced his minutes. Anyway, it's no good at all, not good. My Nets did squeak out a win. Well, hockey tonight. I want Habs and Coyotes wins.

December 27, 2016 @ 7:07 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Coyotes lost last night. No Habs. My bad. They play tonight in Tampa Bay. I was missing them so jumped the gun. My Nets are in Chicago tonight and my Suns in San Antonio. My Cavs are off until tomorrow. Anyway, there is a possibility for a job. My friend has to help me update my resume tomorrow. Anyway, so I don't know if it will work out or anything. I don't want to work until mid to late January though as the apartment next to me has to get something done in it and it's being done January 9 and will be noisy work so I don't want to work that week. Anyway, I will be fine especially with my new plan in place.

December 28, 2016 @ 8:02 AM

Rick C in Oakville

@stephen: You nailed it. The political leaders will say anything to stay in power, and believe most voters will buy in. Martin was probably the only one i trusted of your list, having reduced the debt and deficit as finance minister. But I never voted for him as the Liberals of that time were pretty well tainted with their sponsorship scandal. Trudeau better watch his cash for access might taint him and leave some of his supporters a bit disillusioned. I wonder if any big Oil lobbyists donated, if they did that could be very damaging in light of the pipe line approvals recently.

December 28, 2016 @ 8:43 PM

Cheryl

Well, not a good night. My Habs blew it. They had to mess it up. Carey Price wasn't on his game. He blew it in overtime and my Habs lost. Also my Nets and Suns lost. My Nets were winning as well, but they blew it in the end and let this Jimmy Butler guy keep scoring away. This is not good. Anyway, I heard there is a storm out today. My friend is supposed to come and help with my resume. I hope he can make it. My Habs better win tonight and my Coyotes and Cavs better win tonight.

December 29, 2016 @ 7:54 AM

Cheryl

Well, I can't find the next Open Mike. I looked. Not here. Anyway, my Nets lost last night. My Cavs, Suns and Habs all won on Thursday. Anyway, I applied to a couple places. I got a reply and said I need to do a speed test and told me where to go do it online, but it didn't work with my speech software so I said I can't do it. Then he said I have to do it as he wasn't going to make exceptions. I can't do it so I said I'm not interested. I don't want that job anyway. I mean I will be fine. I'll take a job if I find a good one, but if I don't, I'll be fine. Problem is that a lot of software for transcription is more graphical not working with speech software. This is what I told my dad and his wife and they just don't believe it and think I'm making things up, but I'm really not. It's the way it is. Anyway, if I find something I find something, but if not, I won't.

I forgot yesterday was a Friday! Sorry about that... this tends to happen between Xmas and New Years as I take time off to hang with the family.

Let's let this Open Mike ride until next Friday when I promise to post a new one. :)

All the best to EVERYONE in 2017.
Hope for a prosperous & healthy new year.
Thanks Mike

The Sheepdog are the epitome of what a rock band should look and sound like. That is all.

Happy New Year to all.

December 31, 2016 @ 11:34 PM

Cheryl

Well, not a good day for sports yesterday except my Cavs won. I can depend on them to win. I think they will repeat this year. My Habs lost and my Coyotes lost. That's no good. My Habs did lose in overtime so they get a point, but that was a game they should have won. My Suns also lost. That's not a good thing. Anyway, last weekend of regular football season. I am ahead inn the pool, but just by a bit so I need to stay ahead. Happy new year. I hope it's a good year. I have to save money. It is honestly true. Transcription is going to software that is graphical and doesn't work with Jaws which is my speech software. Anyway, if something comes along and it's really good, I'll take it, but on January 9, they will be doing some repairs in the apartment next to mine so I don't want to work before then anyway.

January 1, 2017 @ 7:41 AM

Cheryl

Well, football wasn't too good. The pool is tied. It ended in a tie. My Cardinals did win. My Ravens played like they didn't care. My Browns blew it. Oh well. Anyway, I am an independent contractor so that's why they can't provide compensation pay. Anyway, so I hope this is a good year. If I have to touch my RRSP, that won't be too good, but that shouldn't have to happen yet.

January 2, 2017 @ 7:34 AM

Cheryl

Well, my Cavs won another one. Boy it was close though, but they won it. I can count on them. My Suns didn't do so well. They lost. They are at the bottom. Well, Bill wants a playoff pool. He says it's better to have a winner. I have the Seahawks, Cowboys, Dolphins and Chiefs. He has the Steelers, Patriots, Giants and Texans. Hopefully I win.

January 3, 2017 @ 7:04 AM

Cheryl

My Habsd won a close one last night. That was something. They almost lost it, but won in overtime. My Suns also won. It was good in the sports world. Now let's hope my Cavs win tonight. They may not haqve a lot of their starters though, but I need them to win. Anyway, so I thought there was hope of getting my job back because I talked to someone at the CNIB who said that it's the law that even though I am an independent contractor I have to be accommodated for which means that the company has to make the software accessible. She was supposed to call me back later yesterday, but didn't. Anyway, and then my dad tells me not to get my hopes up because if they wanted to pay attention to the law, they would have tried to accommodate. Anyway, so I don't know what will happen. I have no idea. I've been working at home since 2002 so I don't really want to start going out to work again. Anyway, who knows what will happen.

January 4, 2017 @ 8:03 AM

twins from bolton

My 1 son who lives in Ottawa bought tickets for World Junior Hockey game tonight - Cda. vs. Sweden as MANY tickets were not sold. He waited until 2PM & got approx. $ 200.00 each tickets for $ 40,00 each - 2nd level at blue line in Montreal. He then calls me at work & says "do you want to go". 7 hr drive for me & said no & told him to have fun.

January 4, 2017 @ 6:06 PM

Cheryl

My Cavs lost. That was not a good game, and my Coyotes lost, but my Habs won. So far nothing. Probably that person from the CNIB called just to get my hopes up. She won't call back. Anyway, so who knows. There's nothing out there, that's for sure. They are making things less and less accessible for blind people, I know they are.
