Let's go Blue Jays!

And...Does anyone know what happened to Mike Bullard? A week ago he was going to be back soon and now he has disappeared from the 1010 website.

Now I'm hurt you don't read my tweets. :(

I tweeted this over a week ago and talked about it on episode 196 of my podcast.

Mike Bullard is no longer on @newstalk1010 #radio

Bullard is no longer on 1010. I'm not privy to exactly what went down, but it's clear he was pushed and did not jump.

And Go Jays Go! I can't wait for tonight...

Joining the usual 10 minute long queue at the Tim Horton's at King and John this morning, there was a somewhat normal looking 45'ish looking dude sitting at one of the tables as I walked in. Somewhat. It's a chilly October morning, and he's wearing flip flops and shorts. He's got hair a little like Sideshow Bob, but he's got earbuds plugged into a smartphone, and he has coffee and food so he doesn't appear to be homeless.

Within seconds of entering the store though, I hear this guy singing to the song that's playing off his phone..quite loudly. It's Smooth Operator by Sade, and he's singing really badly. But, you know how you sometimes wear headphones and lose track of how loud you might be, so, I give the guy a pass. But it goes on and on, and becoming annoying. After a few minutes of singing the entire song, he finally quiets down as it finishes. Thank Christ, I'm thinking. But, by this point I'm still not quite through the line so I'm expecting him to belt out another 80's hit to his adoring audience in the line up.

Right on cue, he begins singing again, and since he's so terrible I'm not sure what song it is this time. But then I hear "coast to coast , LA to Chicago...". It's Smooth Operator, again.

It's not Tim Hortons. It's Where Crazy Begins.

In his defense, it's impossible to listen to Smooth Operator and not sing along.

I don't chime in like I used to - such is life I suppose - but I still read this blog every day and listen to Toronto Mike'd as often as possible.

On that note - Toronto Mike'd is exceptional. You should be very proud. You have a way of getting the most out of a guest and even if I don't think I'll like the guest I always exit appreciating them a little more.

Toronto Mike'd has replaced my AM radio. Congratulations on the upcoming episode 200. Quite the feat and I'm proud to say I remember when you started this and you've come very far.

The Lowest of the Low talk on the Tim Thompson podcast was timely ... Shakespeare My Butt is next up on my Spotify playlist. I added it at the time Ron Hawkins was on, but my queue had peaked and was something like 150 hours back then. Down to 33 right now. Too much amazing music out there to listen to!

One nuisance, Hallucigenia has since been pulled from the service.

What I'm really enjoying about the podcast is how everything sort of ties together.

With Tim Thompson, we got to talk about his work with Ron Hawkins and Maestro Fresh-Wes, two recent guests.

Too bad about Mike Bullard- why can't radio stations be honest with their listeners?
I'm not sure I can handle another hour of Jim Richards- what's with the yelling all the time? It's a new thing for him but it's super annoying and I end up switching to Sirius XM.

October 14, 2016 @ 11:21 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Quick additional point about the Tim Thompson episodes.

I received a couple of notes that he starts "low key" and was tough to hear.

Tim's not a broadcaster. His career in media has been creating video. And, because this was out of his comfort zone, I think he was a little nervous as first.

But if you listen beyond the first 15 minutes, you'll hear the passion and honesty in his voice. He's a very humble guy who perfectly marries music and sport and I loved our conversation.

I'm just sorry I forget to get a picture with him.

I'm not normally home on a Friday but I feel like ratshit. Over the last two weeks I've had the cough/cold come and go and come back again, then a minor bladder infection come and go (ha ha) and come back again. But I do have obligations so I will suck it up (no man cold for me) and head off shortly. I can deal with the coughing and headache, but the bladder but is damned uncomfortable!

Classic Leafs. They always manage to spoil a special evening. Classic Habs. Win a game with a backup goalie and not their best effort. Dirtbag move by Shaw at the end of the game, though.

I have to finish the winterizing tomorrow whether I like it or not. Snow came to the prairies early but it has gone again - for awhile, at least. Raking, covering, filling a few holes, the usual nonsense...

And yes, Toronto Mike'd is the best pod out there. Period. I'm a day one'r and I am so impressed and so proud of @TorontoMike for turning personal enjoyment into a first rate product that so many people can enjoy.

This may sound odd to everyone else but it took me a bit to figure out who the new girl on TSN was till I realize it was Lindsay Hamilton who used to be with the CBC doing sports there. With the way everyone is jumping around and/or being shuffled around the various stations these days I think we're going to need a flow chart (or a score card) to keep track of it all.

When i get a song stuck in my head i immediately start humming the theme from Jurassic Park. It's so fabulous it acts as a lovely mental scrub for the crap I want out. But something went sideways this morning when I tried getting Smooth Operator out of my noggin. Just after leaving Tim Horton's I got the J.P theme going and it worked well for a while. But then in the office I shared my story with a colleague so Smooth Operator came right back. So, I tried again, but this time..for a reason I can't explain, I now have the theme from Laverne and Shirley firmly entrenched between my ears. Swell.

Let's do it again today. Go Tribe. Game at 4:00 means I have my Habs at 7:00. Well, if the baseball doesn't end at 7:00, I can join the Habs a little bit late. My favourite Leaf is #1 Go Dave!

Cool story ( Ok I think it's cool ) I owned the house Keon owned during the 67 cup run. He sold it that summer and moved around corner to a larger home.

My user name on most forums is redbandit14 for my red Suzuki Bandit and #14.

I'm not certain what criteria they used but I'm certainly OK with Keon at #1 :)

October 15, 2016 @ 11:58 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I struggle to appreciate Dave Keon. By all accounts he was a great Leaf but I never saw him play. I missed his entire career.

I see him named #1 and it simply reinforces the fact the Leafs have never really had a superstar. I never hear Keon talked about in the same breath as the NHL greats.

This is not meant to take anything away from Keon but simply to say people my age and younger have no idea how good Keon was.

October 15, 2016 @ 12:34 PM

Blind Dave

I remember Keon being a highly-respected and go-to guy in the 70's, but my hockey memories start after the Leafs last cup win (I was three in 1967). He may have been impactful, but his contributions were over shadowed in later years by some horrible Leaf teams. My dad was a big Keon fan.

@ James Edgar, cool story with Dave Keon.
Around 1970, my hockey buddy who was Catholic and went to St. Boniface church in Scarborough told me Keon was a regular at their church, and knowing I was a fan invited me to go with him. Went for 3 or 4 Sundays, but never got to see him. Not sure if my buddy just wanted to have someone tag along or if the story was legit. I think Keon lived in the Guild Inn at that time.

October 15, 2016 @ 3:43 PM

Dawn Keibals

@ Toronto Mike..YES Davey Keon was a spectacular smooth skater.Nobody but nobody has been better than him in his prime ..and after so don't even start to try and name names .
Also google Mr. Keon for the amount of shorthanded goals he scored in his career. When there was a 6 team NHL not like today 30 teams and 60% of the players should not really be playing in the NHL.
I will admit 5 players in the top 100 could have been #1 but Keon being #1 was a fantastic choice.

Oct 15 is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day. It's something that touches far more lives than people are aware. Chances are you know someone who has been affected by it. If no one else-- you know me.
We call it "a loss", because it's too painful to say the whole phrase: the loss of a child. My Itty Bitty may never have been born, but he lived. He was loved. He had a Mom and a Dad who loved him, and still miss him. When it comes to such a loss, you can grieve, you can heal, you can come to terms with it, you can live the rest of your life. But you never really "get over it". It's part of you-- that life, that child you knew and who might have been. They're part of the fabric of your life, and will always be part of your heart.
You know someone who has been through this-- even if you don't know. A loss is still seen as shameful. Something to be hidden. There's the underlying thoughts of BLAME. What did you DO WRONG? The answer is nothing. Nature is-- nature. Sometimes it just sucks. So what can you, a person who knows a person, do? The answer, again, is nothing. You can't do anything to fix it. But you can be a friend, a kind voice, a loved one. Just like with any other loss-- all you can do is be there for them. As a friend, a loved one, a family member, or even just an expression of condolence or warm thoughts. There's nothing you can fix. Just-- be there for them.
And if you are the one who has been through the loss-- know you aren't alone. This happens and there is rarely-- if ever-- anything you could have "done about it". Remember the tiny life you had, and loved, and will never forget. You were a parent, and loved as only a parent could. It's okay to feel sad. It's okay to mourn, to grieve. And it's okay to be strong. You are not alone.

October 15, 2016 @ 10:56 PM

Yes, it's Cleveland's year. I hope they win two more games to advance to the World Series and they will. My Indians can do it. It was a great win yesterday with a homer by Carlos Santana. They'll do it again tomorrow and Tuesday and then be off to the next round. I really don't care about Jose bat flip. My Habs didn't do so well yesterday. They lost, but it was in overtime so they get a point. They need Carey Price back and he will be back. Tuesday is the home opener against the Penguins. Coyotes won their home opener in overtime. That was great. So it's going to be Habs and Coyotes to the finals. Kean won again last night and yesterday afternoon so they only lost one game so far. Good to see them doing well in this spiel. They better win it. Today is football day. Ravens will hopefully get out of their slump and win and I have lots of wins in my pool today.

October 16, 2016 @ 6:01 AM

Andy

When I was visiting family in Ohio over the summer, my sister in law hinted that it was going to be the Indians' year (The diehard Cubbie in me disagrees, but it would be something for Cleveland to go championshipless all these years and then win three in a matter of months).

October 16, 2016 @ 11:27 AM

Blind Dave

I caught a good portion of the Cubs - Dodgers game last night. I'm impressed with how the NL plays the game within the game, especially from the Cubs manager.

It's going to be interesting the rest of the way, regardless of who gets into the Series.

October 16, 2016 @ 2:46 PM

Tom

Why should anyone be surprised that the Indians are up 2-0, after all, they swept the best offence in the AL, in Boston. The Jays may have better pitching but it comes down to the manufacturing of runs & TO cant do it. They couldn't do it last year when they needed it (remember GM 6 2nd & 3rd with no out & couldn't drive in that 1 run to tie or go ahead, thanks Josh) so what makes u think they can do it this time.

Jays players say they have learnt from their past having been there before. We'll see.

GM 3 win & they are in it, GM 3 loss & bye -bye Birdie.

& why is Domi in the top 100, he was a goon that's all he brought.

October 16, 2016 @ 3:04 PM

Cheryl

My Ravens lost again. That's no good, but they lost. Anyway, Cowboys beat the Packers, but they're both in my pool. I got wins in my pool by the Seahawks, Lions, Titans even though the Browns are in my pool, Saints even though the panthers are in my pool. Anyway, Colts lost which is bad and Eagles lost which is bad. I hope my Cardinals win tonight even though the Jets are in my pool as well. Dolphins won which is also good for my pool. Yes, Indians will win tonight and tomorrow and advance. I know they will win the World Series. Indians can do it. Kean lost yesterday. They got knocked out.

October 17, 2016 @ 3:59 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Way back in 1998, The Hockey News listed their top 100 National Hockey League players of all-time. The judges who helped make the selections for this list included writers, journalists, and broadcasters (Don Cherry, John Davidson, Milt Dunnell, Stan Fischler, Dick Irvin, Brian McFarlane, Bob McKenzie, Jim Matheson, Harry Neale, Frank Orr), as well as coaches, referees, general managers, and former players (Al Arbour, Scotty Bowman, Emile Francis, Howie Meeker, Scotty Morrison, Roger Neilson, Bud Poile, Sam Pollock, Marcel Pronovost, Billy Reay, Glen Sather, Harry Sinden, Red Storey).

On that list, in 1998, Dave Keon was #69. Now think how many players would now bump him further down that list. Players like Crosby, Ovechkin, Getzlaf, Toews, Iginla, Niedermayer, Thornton, Brodeur, Keith, Pronger, Weber, Doughty, Bergeron.... and that's just the Canadians. You'd have to add Ovechkin, Modano, Datsyuk, Lidstrom, Forsberg.....

By the time you've updated this 1998 list, where do you think Keon ends up?

October 17, 2016 @ 4:13 PM

Anyway, let's win another one today and then go on to the World Series. Let's go Indians. Jason Kipnis and Mike Napoli each hit home runs. Anyway, I want a sweep and hopefully I will get one. My Cardinals won last night as well, so that's good although I have the Jets in my pol as well, but glad my Cardinals won. My football pool isn't doing very well though. Anyway, Kean didn't win the curling on the weekend. That's not good.

I haven't seen it covered in the news, but the CHUM building is no more. As of this morning there is only a bit of the facing of the south end of the building left, and it looks like that might be gone by day's end.

It wasn't an architectural gem, by any means -- it wasn't even an interesting building, structurally -- but CHUM was a huge deal at one time and many on-air personalities and popular music stars made their way through that building. I'll miss seeing it and remembering the old neon "CHUM / DIAL 1050" sign that vanished many years ago.

If Q107 were to flip back to a hard rock format do you think it would work? I miss the pure rock days.

I'm also interested to hear about her time working at HTZ FM.

I don't listen to much radio in the morning, but when I do, it's always Matt Galloway on Metro Morning.

But I'm certain many intentionally listen to CHFI. It's light and breezy and fun and inoffensive... And they do very well in the ratings books, so it can't just be dentist offices and coffee shops!

October 19, 2016 @ 11:35 AM

As a bit of a conspiracy-theorist, I assumed the choice of CHFI was to ensure customers didn't loiter past 30 minutes. For me, it really is the verbal assault of the ads. I love CBC Radio 1 for its ad-free programming.

As my previous post last night. The priest has read last rights to the Jays a short while ago.
How can the best hitting team in MLB not hit Cleveland pitchers as their best starting 2 are injured & haven't played. Andrew Miller has been lights out & the kid today Merritt was not shakin' in his boots as JBats said. Joey & rest of the team were "Shakin' All Over" today.

Game now over. Life support done. Next year?

JBats gone (no loss at 36), Saunders sign him for home town discount, money save for JB give a blank cheque to Edwin PLEASE. Gibby did an admirable job this year taking the team from WC win & ALDS win more than expected.

Great season overall.

How about those Indians. How about Ryan Merritt. Anyway, Bautista is so full of it. Shaken in his boots. Anyway, Indians win and they are going to win the World Series. I just know they will. Anyway, great hockey game tonight. My Coyotes are at my Habs. I think it will be close. It will go to overtime with each team getting at least a point. Hopefully I will have a good week in my football pool. My Ravens have to turn it around though.

Oh, I forgot to give you the Indians home runs. Carlos Santana hit one and also Coco Crisp hit one. It was an awesome game.

Mike,

I cannot believe that Mike Bullard was let go because of that clip. I guess we will never know.

@GDB

To be clear, I'm not suggesting he was let go because of that clip. A listener of my show emailed that clip to me and I share it in that context.

Personally, I don't know what he's gone, but if I had to guess I'd guess budget cuts.

I highly doubt Bullard got let go over that clip, it would've been nice to hear the rest of that convo too though, but if that's all that happened,I highly doubt that was the reason.
As if she didn't even catch on though. That was funny.
