What's the scoop on Hebsy, Mike?

I don't have the scoop to share, but I touched base with Hebsy just yesterday and he tells me he's fine.

People often forget "The House of the Rising Sun" is an old folk song from the 1800s.

Here's Lead Belly's version:

There are rumours he was suspended for slugging a guy at work.

April 10, 2015 @ 8:59 AM

Like many classic folk ballads, the authorship of "The House of the Rising Sun" is uncertain. Musicologists say that it is based on the tradition of broadside ballads such as The Unfortunate Rake of the 18th century, and that English emigrants took the song to America where it was adapted to its later New Orleans setting.[citation needed][dubious – discuss] There is also a mention of a house-like pub called the "Rising Sun" in the classic "Black Beauty" tale, published in 1877, which was set in London, England, and which may or may not have influenced the song's title.[citation needed]

The oldest known existing recording is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it for Vocalion Records in 1934.[2] Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley.

The braniacs at NASA have just predicted that we'll have proof of alien life within the next decade.

Given my extensive knowledge of the universe based on 4 years of high school science, I was fairly certain this would happen within my lifetime. But with the rate of technology increasing exponentially, it doesn't seem far fetched that we'll have hard evidence by 2025. So the question is, how will you react?

People like the dude on the right are the ones you should really worry about .

I actually look forward to the ensuing gong show. It will be like watching the ultimate societal train wreck. Will there be mass suicides? How quickly will stock prices of gun and ammunition companies go through the roof? How long will it be before we have a reality show featuring the first person to have sex with an alien? And, how will the religious folk handle it?

What's also interesting is whether or not we'll come across alien life less or more advanced than us. Given earth's relatively young age and the millions (billions?) of planets across the galaxies similar to our own, we should expect the unexpected. Will they be a hostile species looking to exploit earth's resources, or will they be benign 9 eyed jelly-fish creatures who have been sitting back and allowing us to find our own way?

My sources will always remain a secret.

April 10, 2015 @ 10:04 AM

I don't mind Blundell but his sidekick George is annoying. Its not so much what he says but his voice is difficult to listen to in the morning.

let's hope NASA is wrong just because of that.

Open Mike! We missed you earlier this week!

April 10, 2015 @ 11:11 AM

How about those Habs. They won in overtime. Lars Eller scores in overtime. PK Subban got a goal and an assist. Great game. My Coyotes lost. The season is finished for them though. My Orioles and Diamondbacks didn't play yesterday. Royals won yesterday which helps my pool. Nationals lost which does not help my pool though. Orioles are going to beat the Jays this weekend. They will so I get more wins in my pool and I love my Orioles. Hopefully Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers. Royals and Angels play each other. That does not matter. I will get wins in my pool either way. My trainer even said yesterday that he is tired of Dean Blundell. Good for him.

a question for the hivemind regarding a traffic sign that annoys me.

Every Thursday I have to take a different a route different than my usual to get home.
I am driving South along Islington and I want to make a left turn (ie go West) on Bloor.
There is a black traffic sign with a white arrow pointing left (ie West) that says "TTC BUSES EXCEPTED"

WTF does this mean?
At first I was thinking it was something about turning left - but there are no other signs at this intersection about turning?

Can someone elighten me?

April 10, 2015 @ 11:46 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I know that intersection very well. I'm pretty sure the "TTC BUSES EXCEPTED" is regarding a right turn on Bloor, not left.

Upon further review, you said west, so I think "left" was a typo on your part. And to answer your question, it makes no sense, because cars can turn right in that lane as well as buses, so what exactly are buses being excepted from?

April 10, 2015 @ 12:00 PM

@GUNter: it means that if you're in that lane, you *MUST* make a right turn. TTC buses are excepted from it. They can get in that lane (to pick up and drop off passengers), then drive STRAIGHT into the intersection and re-merge with traffic (and thus not make a right turn).

April 10, 2015 @ 12:18 PM

@mike - yes it was my typo - i meant turn 'right'
@ Lorne - OMG YES! that must be it. seriously this has been bugging me for months, and everytime i turn there i fear a cop pulling me over. Thanks alot!

Has anyone else noticed that Shell charges $.20 more than regular unleaded (Bronze) for their V-Power Gold (91) while Petro Canada and others are around $.16 or $.17 more for their premium gases?

This kinda bugs me. They list their regular unleaded as the same price as the competition but it appears as they are trying to pull a fast one by charging more for their premium unleaded and hoping people aren't paying attention.

How about those Orioles.
Love them TOO - Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Eddie Murray, Mike Flanagan, Cal Ripkin, Earl Weaver, etc.
OH I forgot, this is 2015 - they are terrible now after getting rid of their 2 best players late last year.

Go Jays Go - going to opening game on Monday

April 10, 2015 @ 6:24 PM

That was an awful baseball game today. My Orioles lost and it was big. That's awful and that's a loss in my pool. Why are the Jays so good? Anyway, they won't win again tomorrow. My Orioles will bounce back. They have to. I want my money. I want to win my pool.

Blind Dave

I'm betting that Connor McDavid goes to the Kings. @torontomike said this on twitter awhile back but this very thing has also been on my mind too.

Oh, and the Sabres just clinched 30th. A 20% chance of landing Connor and barring that, a 100% chance of landing Jack Eichel.

I will offer advanced condolences to the kid who goes to, and gets ruined by, the Leafs.

Time to make the draft lottery a real lottery. Fourteen even chances drawn from fourteen down to one.

@ dale..... Like last year a team does not always improve by adding players but,by subtracting the dead weight.
J.P. Arencibia is a perfect example.
2015 will turn out to prove that Rasmus & Lawrie & Lind being gone will make the team better.

April 11, 2015 @ 2:24 AM

Well, hopefully my Orioles will turn it around. They have to. My Diamondbacks won though. That's great. They won 4 to 3 giving me a pool win. Royals won over the Angels. That is a win for my pool. I have both the Royals and angels so if it went the other way, it would still be a win. Nationals lost as well though, a loss for my pool. I need to win this pool so I get the money. Well, my Nets won last night, but my Suns lost and the Raptors won another one.

April 11, 2015 @ 7:58 AM

Well, my Nets won, but my Suns lost. Anyway, the Raptors also won. Well, my Diamondbacks won last night fortunately. Anyway, Royals beat Angels. If that went the other way, it still would have been a win for my pool. I really need my Orioles to win today though. I don't want a big long slump. Nationals also lost which is a loss for my pool.

Here's what I don't get about you. You live in Toronto, but didn't start listening to baseball games until you received a subscription, which requires annual payment. You subsequently adopted the Baltimore Orioles as your team for no particularly good reason except they were leading the division at the time.

Meanwhile, you can hear every single Jays game for free with a simple AM radio. All you had to do was adopt the Jays as your team, which really makes the most sense. Then, you can save your money and drop the MLB subscription.

There's a monetary advantage to rooting for the home team, and when we win, the entire city celebrates together.

My wife's 2012 VW Eos has been in the shop 3 times in the last 3 weeks. Started with a check engine light, deep de carbon ing of the valves (common VW issue) and other maintenance $1200.00. Within 24 hours car breaks down and towed back to dealer, failed coil Pack. Dealer makes good and covers everything except rental, so good on them. Less than 3 weeks later, car dies towed back to dealer today. Won't know the costs $$$ until Monday, but on hook for rentals as car is out of warranty.
I'm a car guy but haven't ever seen this back to back issues in all the years I have had cars. Car has just 100k but have heard it's about the age and mileage to dump a VW, anyone with any VW experience outside of the TDI diesel fans?

Anybody following the Duffy thing. Pretty crazy stuff.

My highlight so far is that Duffy paid Ezra Levant $2,000 for a speech. What a "rebel" getting paid off by the current government. Personally I am a bigger fan of a bag of money with a $ sign.

BTW does anybody else really hate those "Action Plan" commercials. The idea of using our own tax money to advertise their agenda is as absurd as you can get. There's going to be tons of them during the playoffs.

April 11, 2015 @ 3:36 PM

Well, Habs are going to win the cup. They won last night so that's great. Just wait until they win the cup. It's their year and it will be 25 cups for Habs so there is still hockey. Baseball was great last night as well. My Orioles won this time 7 to 1. That's great. This is it. I think it's worth paying for a baseball subscription. It's not that much and I really like to choose what games and broadcasters to listen to. It would cost a lot more to get a TV subscription as well or to go to a game even more. Anyway, my Diamondbacks won as well. That's great 6 to 0. Elsewhere in my pool, Royals won again and also Cardinals won. My pool is doing well I think so far. Anyway, looking forward to some more baseball today. Another Orioles and another Diamondbacks win at least.

April 12, 2015 @ 8:22 AM

Piggy Bank

Money people might find this lawsuit in federal court (ignored by media) interesting. Why do Canadians allow private banks to profit off our public debt, when our national public central bank, the Bank of Canada, is constitutionally legislated to provide no-interest loans for human capital and infrastructure spending?

April 12, 2015 @ 1:20 PM

Well, not a good day. My Orioles lost. Chris Tillman didn't pitch all that well and they lost 10 to 7. That's no good so my Orioles are 3 and 3. My Diamondbacks also lost again, but at least they won the series, but they're at 3 and 3. Anyway, the best team in my pool is the Royals. I can't believe it, but they are 6 and 0. I didn't think they would be that good. I wanted the Tigers and they are also 6 and 0 so go figure. Anyway, so the Royals are always giving me a win. I need my Orioles and Diamondbacks to go on hot streaks. The Cardinals and Nationals won today as well wich is good, but I wish I had the Braves in the NL east. I could have taken them, but I thought the Nationals would be better so picked them. It's too late to change. Once I pick, I have to keep it. Oh, my Nets lost this afternoon as well which also sucks. Well, Habs are winning the cup. Yes they will.

April 12, 2015 @ 8:06 PM

Kill me now if I have to listen/read to Cheryl talk about her "Orioles" and the "pool" for another 162 games.

April 12, 2015 @ 11:05 PM

Well, on top of everything, my Suns lost. That's no good. Well, the Habs are going to win the cup. I know they are. First game is on Wednesday. Okay. I'm not here to hurt anyone, but the thing is maybe there should be a thread where I talk about stuff like my pool and it would be in one separate thread. Mind you if there is only one, it would get longer and longer.

April 13, 2015 @ 6:52 AM

Good idea. Haven't found a thread yet though. Guess Mike hasn't read it for a while. Oh well, I understand if he's busy. Anyway, my Orioles lost. That sucks. The fricken Yankees won. No good. My diamondbacks did win though. That's great. Elsewhere in my pool, the Royals continue to win. I'm glad I picked them. If I would have had the Tigers, I would have ended up with an AL central loss. That would suck. Angels also won, but they're not doing well. Nationals and Cardinals lost. The only team doing well in my pool is the Royals. I didn't think they would be this good. My Nets lost last night as well. If they keep it up, no playoffs.

There are Open Mikes on Fridays only now. The Tuesday Open Mike is on hiatus.

April 14, 2015 @ 10:11 AM

Okay. I know there is only one open Mike, but it can be used for a whole week. Okay. I thought maybe a thread for my ramblings as well as the normal weekly open Mike would be a good idea, but of course, you don't have to. Anyway, my little heart is cheering for the Habs. There is a problem though. Someone decided to set up a playoff pool. I tried to get the Habs. I was hoping and hoping I could have them. Someone else picked them before I did. This means I am stuck with Ottawa. Well, my little heart wants the Habs to win but Ottawa has to win to get some money out of all this. This is really going to be hard. It's more upsetting than not getting the Tigers in the pool. Now I'm glad I don't have the Tigers. The Royals are better. Anyway, my Orioles won last night. It's about time. Miguel Gonzalez got the win and Zack Britton the save. Adam Jones homered. Boy he's hot. Diamondbacks lost last night though. Also the Nationals lost and the Angels lost. The only win I got was my Orioles. My Suns lost. My little heart still says go Habs.

April 15, 2015 @ 10:33 AM

Have you considered sports media as writer as your updates keep me informed & they are entertaining at the least.

Hey a thought . Mike, can you use Cheryl as your sports reporter for this blog as she seems so knowledgeable about scores with all sports - hockey, baseball. football, curling .
Oh I forgot Mike, you live in Toronto & Cheryl MUST live elsewhere, probably Baltimore!!

April 15, 2015 @ 6:24 PM

Jason from Sudbury

Well Cheryl guess you're not getting money in your playoff pool cause the Habs are gonna beat Ottawa in 6, and they're off to a fine start as they won tonight.

April 15, 2015 @ 10:28 PM

Well, good win for my Habs. My little heart cheers for the Habs. Anyway, the pool works like this. Lots are in it and each have one team. If Ottawa loses, I am gone out of the pool and I have no chance of getting any money. Anyway, Habs will probably win anyway. Forget the money and screw that pool. My Nets won, but so did the Raptors. Baseball was good. My Orioles won. That's great. My Diamondbacks lost which is not so great. The Royals lost a game. Goes to show you they are human. It would hurt my pool if they go on a losing skid. Other winners in my pool were the Angels, Nationals and Cardinals.

Dr. Farid Fata is accused of misdiagnosing cancer patients in a fraud scheme

DETROIT -- DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit-area cancer doctor accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients and ordering unnecessary treatments will remain in jail until trial, a judge said Wednesday after prosecutors insisted he might flee to the Middle East.

Dr. Farid Fata, in custody since Aug. 6, wanted the judge to lower his $9 million bond to $500,000 and give him a chance to win release. But the decision was worse for the Oakland County man: No bond.
