Some bookkeeping items....

"this guest" is taking some time away from the site while he address some health issues. I wish him well and hope he returns.

"Corey" banned himself. He thinks I hate him, but I really don't. I just found most of his comments fell somewhere between annoying and obnoxious.

I aim for weekly... Elvis has bailed on me the last couple of weeks, but Mad Dog is on his way as I type. Episode 92 will be available today.

Best wishes for "this guest" and hopefully Corey returns. We need more intelligent conservatives on this blog.

I didn't have a dislike for Corey, but I don't know if you can quantify his postings as intelligent conservative. I think he just liked poking the bear a.k.a toronto mike with contrary comments vs. taking an ardent stand like Argie.

We all hope that
this guest is on the mend
and back posting here
before too long.

I disagree with Mike often, but have never been banned or made to feel like "Mike hates me". It's all about the delivery, and not being contrary just for the sake of stirring the pot.

NHL on Sportsnet? Down 14% from last year. Trend? Laffs? Or indicative of the smaller reach of Rogers vs CBC? 12yr contract eh...

Hey Mike, this is interesting: Corus seems to have rebranded the edge morning show once again. "Fred and Mel" is now "The Fearless Fred Show With Fred & Melanie."

I was still trying to figure out whether "this guest" was a he/she but now you blew it!

I thought you had a "no spoilers" policy...

BTW. In the "Sixth Sense", the guy is dead, in the "Crying Game", the she is a he and in the end of the Sopranos Tony dies. There you go

October 14, 2014 @ 12:31 PM

@thisguest: speedy recovery. ODing on line breaks is a scary thing to go through.

@gump: Actually, Tony Soprano was actually a woman all along who died after being accidentally shot in a botched mob hit. She was a waitress in a restaurant frequented by the mob. The entire series is her dying hallucinations of being a powerful mob boss getting revenge on those who killed her. It all comes back to that one scene in that one restaurant when she finally passes, which is why it ended so suddenly.

My understanding from the article I read is that SN's -14% is due to CBC's reach being larger.

For those of you who shave. In my continued push to get "off the grid" I have started using an old fashioned straight razor. Got the whole little tub for the shaving paste, etc. The shave is awesome. Initially it takes a little longer and you have to learn to take care of the blade but well worth it.

Ralph Platner aka "Ralph the program guy" has passed at age 67. If you have been to a Leafs or Jays game over the past few decades you know who this guy is. If there was a big event in Toronto he was there. Also a legend in the Jewish community for crashing bar-mitzvahs in the 60s and 70s, he was well-known to everyone who grew up going to bar-mitzvahs at that time. As told my dad, Ralph gained a cult following where people always wondered if "Ralph the party crasher" would show up to the bar mitzvah that night. Truly beloved by many Torontonians, Ralph will be missed.

Get well soon, This Guest. Speedy recovery. Well, the game got rained out last night so they are playing tonight, and then tomorrow and Thursday 4:00 games. Believe me, the Orioles are going to make a comeback, Orioles in six who will beat the Giants in the World Series hopefully just four or five. My Habs got clobbered last night. The game sucked. They lost 7 to 1. Brendan Gallagher scored the only Habs goal. This sucks. As for my football pool, I am still ahead on top with 11 wins. That's great. As long as the Ravens, Cardinals and Seahawks win, I'm in good shape, but Seahawks losing is good for my Cardinals though, so they both should keep winning and my Ravens should keep winning as well. I have the Bob Seger album. It's awesome. If you don't have it yet, you have to get it. It's well worth it. His voice keeps getting better and better. This guy can really sing. I'm telling you you need to get this awesome album. Bob Seger is going to make music for many more years.

Get back here so we can disagree about everything again.

Has any Toronto mayoral or city council candidate supported or even mention car sharing services like Uber in their platforms?

What many politicians fail to understand is the transportation system in Toronto isn't just about subways and street cars. The private sector can play a very important role as well. We just need a little imagination.

@Glen

I disagree with Selley about Uber, vehemently. He shows he doesn't know the issue and is ignorant of Uber's implications.

Uber itself is a great service. I love it. Gets you a cab faster, shows you when it'll get there, and it eliminates the need for cash. Cabbies with Beck, Co-op, or any other cab service can sign up to be an Uber driver and gain additional fares to the ones they get through their dispatcher. Good for the people, good for the cab drivers. UberX is a different story. It'll destroy the industry. Let me explain.

There are 3500 taxi "plates" or licenses in Toronto. The market value to buy one of these plates is about 300,000 and up. If you want to be a taxi driver, you have to essentially pay that much up front just for the chance to earn a living. The pay off is, once you retire, you can sell the plate for a profit and cash-out (which is somewhat of a replacement for the pension that taxi drivers don't get). Of course, the more plates there are, the less valuable they become. That's why there's always grumblings in the taxi industry if the City of Toronto decides to issue more plates. With UberX, ANYONE can be a taxi driver. ANYONE. No more plates! No more licenses! The whole industry becomes unregulated! Taxi drivers' plates get to be worth WAY LESS because why buy a 300,000 plate when you can become an UberX driver?

UberX would destroy the livelihood of taxi drivers who have worked their whole lives to be able to eventually sell their plates at a large profit when retiring. It would spell the end of Beck Taxi, other large taxi services, and hard-working Torontonians whose life's work all of a sudden gets severely devalued. Other cities have banned UberX and for good reason. Toronto has a long history of screwing up the taxi industry - I can write a short book on the bureaucratic and political incompetence on this issue - but here's hoping they won't screw this one up.

Thanks for taking the time to read this for those who have read this far as I feel this is a very important issue that deserves more public attention. Selley is ignorant of the facts, you don't have to be. Learn more at http://www.taxinews.com/.

@Anonymous. re: UberX. The whole deregulated sharing economy has it's merits. I think that as a competitive force Uber will force cab companies to adopt technology must faster. I'm less sold on the security idea & got a chuckle at the whole background "check". I'm not denying background check make sense to but only naive civilians believe they're foolproof.

Doug: I've seen one and played with one. They're not that big but they are quite expensive. $699.00. One thing I really like is the Blackberry OS. It's a sold SECURE OS & the developers understand what SQLite VACUUM command is used for. I also like the functionality of it and apparently you can use Android Apps on it though I haven't tried it myself. I use Apple myself but I was not permitted to put anything work related (even email) on any phone outside of an RSA token.

On that topic I wish Blackberry would create an ecosystem that's secure. I attended a seminar about smart phone security hosted by a former CIA "security guy". I left thinking "holy shit". I think Blackberry could find a solid market for those interested in security. Sadly, they lack the apps for regular use.

R.I.P. Doug Queen ‪#‎HonouringDoug‬

Sometimes.. things are not quite what they appear.

I thought to share this tragic Toronto story here as the family would like for us to share it where we can. They want Doug'a story to be known & the truth of who he was & how he died to be straight for the record.

I went to public & high school with the Queen brothers. They where a grade ahead of me & though we where not close friends they always where nice to me in the halls & at various parties through out the years. They treated me with warmth, respect & as a equal even though they where older & that really meant allot to me.

It is somewhat comforting to know that Doug's legacy will/can live on as authentically bright & good as he was during his time on this earth... as tragic as the reality of his death & the situation around it maybe.

Andrew Queen posted these on Facebook this past weekend & if you knew Doug or heard about this story, now you can know what really happened.

I heard about this Uber thing. I never used them though. I can't send texts so this service isn't good for me. Anyway, my Orioles lost. That sucks. They lost 2 to 1, but they will still win the World Series. They have four games which they can win. The Royals are going to fall, believe me. The Orioles are going to win the next four and then the World Series. I told you there is no party. There won't be one. I did not post my address here. There is no party.

It's funny, but when I'm watching playoff baseball, which I love to do, and I see the Royals beating the Orioles, I have two reactions.

First, it's positive. I'm rooting for the Royals and rather dislike the Orioles.

Then, I think of poor Cheryl...

@Anonymous

I LOVE Uber - everything about it, in fact. My experiences have been excellent. Just this past Saturday morning, used UberX to get from St. Lawrence Market to Liberty Village. The driver was a newly licensed mechanic with student loans to pay down. I really enjoyed chatting with him. I liked that he spoke English and was not conversationally challenged.

I hear what you're saying about people who've worked their whole lives etc. It's sad for sure. The false construct of their whole business model is blowing up. Market demand will continue to drive the popularity of Uber. Their prices are a good 40% less than traditional cabs. If I never got into a traditional cab again, I'd be happy. That certainly doesn't mean I'm celebrating what's happening financially with the drivers and their livelihoods. I'm simply choosing what works best for me.

I like the rating process too - riders rate drivers and drivers rate riders. Payment is also great. I get a text immediately after being dropped off that tells me the amount being charged to my Visa card.

I'll be uber-ing again tonight.

Cheryl's been through it all with her O's.

She remembers those hay days of June when they caught the Jays, she remembers flying high in July and August and clinching the pennant in September. She goes way back with the orange.

My Orioles lost. That's no good. Well, that's it for baseball. My subscription is still around until March though. That's how long it will last. Well, it was nice of my trainer to buy me that gift. Next year I will have to decide whether I pay or not. If I don't pay, then I won't have it. I like a fast game. Anyway, I know my trainer isn't going to buy me this every year. Well, so sad about my Orioles. It sucks.

October 15, 2014 @ 7:50 PM

Cheryl

There is no party. There's always next year. My Orioles will win next year. Anyway, I have hockey, football, and basketball now. I will probably get baseball again next year. I do have to pay though and it all depends on how much, but I think I should be able to get it. Anyway, Orioles and diamondbacks in next year's World Series. Again there is no party.

October 16, 2014 @ 4:33 AM

Jason from Sudbury

There's always next year."
Yes Cheryl, Leaf fans have been saying this since 1968.

October 16, 2014 @ 8:38 AM

Cheryl

Habs play tonight and will win. That will be wonderful. No more baseball until next year. I can't use Uber. I don't have a cellphone and you need a cellphone to use Uber. You can't phone and order a cab and say on the phone that you are blind. No, I won't be able to use them. Well, three more wins for me in the football pool. Atlanta is at my Ravens, easy Ravens win. My Cardinals are in Oakland. Oakland sucks. They can't win a game. One guy in my pool has them and he hasn't gotten any wins from him so when he found out that Cleveland was up for grabs, he took them. Seahawks will also win. I don't really want them to, but they will help my pool if they do.

I've seen you recommend Sense Appeal coffee shop on more than one occasion. I might have to check it out. Without your recommendation I never would have bothered.

That storefront has been many different things in the 8 years I've lived in Mimico, all of them questionable. Until now there has never been any reason to consider going into whatever was located there. There was even a sex club in the basement for awhile.

I don't think the name "Sense Appeal" is doing them any favours.

I think there's still a swingers club downstairs from Sense Appeal.

I've been to Sense Appeal twice (never been to the swinger's club) for lunch. Once I had an awesome pulled pork sandwich and once I had a lovely pasta dish. It's a little pricey, but the ambiance is great and the food and cafe superb.
