The story below describes the horrific "cleaning" of Christians in Mosul. Its not getting much coverage in the mainstream media but I'm sure it could be different if it were another religion or another identifiable group.

@Argie

Maybe.

Or Maybe with a Malaysian airlines jet shot down at the Ukraine-Russia border and Israel sending ground troops into the Gaza Strip it's just got too big a fight for coverage.

The CBC has been doing their typical excellent job covering the crisis in Iraq:

There we go, there is the minimum amount of times Rob Ford must be mentioned in an Open Mike.

Now we don't have to mention him at all today and we can get on to other subjects. Like say, the aforementioned cleaning in Mosul...or the invasion of Gaza, or well...I'd even rather hear what Mike's dog had for breakfast.

@Argie. Seem to need a subscription to read the article

July 22, 2014 @ 9:36 AM

Philly-Bob

@ Argie - it's horrible, I agree. But do yo need to deliver it with such condescension?

The fact that it is happening doesn't make the situation in Gaza any less horrific, or the Malaysian Airlines fiasco any more tragic and confusing.

July 22, 2014 @ 9:38 AM

McNulty

Who isn't reporting this?

While it is terrible, there has been a lot in the news lately. But this is getting coverage.

Of course, if Mikey Ford was in Mosul, it would be headline news.

Lyle Lanley

@Argie

Are you suggesting the world doesn't care when Christians are killed, only when Muslims are killed?

Most would argue the exact opposite is true.

July 22, 2014 @ 9:40 AM

Argie

@Phil
There's no "condescension" in my post, just my opinion. There you go, shooting the messenger again.

@Mike
I agree but CBC has devoted a lot of coverage to Mike Duffy's issues. I'm all for outing pigs like Duffy but its been covered a lot more than the impending genocide in Mosul.

Maybe the media will give it attention AFTER the killing starts.

I believe Mikey Ford is just keeping the seat warm for Robbie.

Robbie will lose the mayoral election this October and then run for Mikey's seat next time.

July 22, 2014 @ 9:48 AM

McNulty

If Mikey can win. Doug has been doing all the talking.

But to Argie's point...

There is a lot of things going on in the world. It won't make headline news unless someone is killed.

Although I wonder why any Christian would want to live in Mosul. Not that they should be kicked out but it isn't a place I would live due to the social climate.

July 22, 2014 @ 9:53 AM

Argie

@McNulty
Then again there already has been lots of killing of Christians by Islamic extremists in various parts of the world (Somalia, Nigeria to name a few).

I do agree as to why a Christian (or anyone for that matter) would want to live in that part of the world is beyond me.

July 22, 2014 @ 10:14 AM

Philly-Bob

@ Argie - I wasn't shooting the messenger. I agree with what you are saying, I'm just pointing out that sometimes your delivery sucks.

http://online.wsj.com/articles/the-christian-purge-from-mosul-1405984542

My way sparks a discussion about an atrocity that does seem to be getting less coverage than other things.

Your way just comes across as the typical Argie rant about how everyone's trying to keep the white christian middle class down. And I'm thinking that wasn't your intent.

So why doesn't the world get together to punish Putin?

How about all airlines stop flying into Russian airports and also stop allowing all Russian airlines to fly into all airports outside of Russia effectively grounding all Russian airline travel. That will cripple the Russian economy immediately and send a stern message to Putin to pull out of the Ukraine immediately and return all land!

a prophecy:

Mikey Ford wins the Toronto City Council seat in a landslide. Mayor David Socknacki is convicted of jaywalking and stripped of power. Council unanimously declares Mikey Ford the new mayor. Harper resigns paving the way for Mikey to assume total control of the Conservative 'brand' in Canada. Prime Minister Mikey Ford leads a worldwide condemnation of Putin and flies to Moscow to personally close all airports. While there he takes a side trip to the Ukraine to solve that problem and marries a mail order bride. They return to Toronto. But she has unsavoury connections and is found consorting with gangs in Rexdale by the Toronto Star. There is talk of a video and crack pipes.

Only discussing Rob Ford (who no longer exists in my mind) because
of your suggestion:

I find (almost) everybody interesting. You're interesting Argie.
But to be honest Rob is about a .333 on a scale of 1.00 - 1000.00
What would there be to talk about?
Ultimately one would want to help him get control of his life and expand his
horizons. That is a full time job.
Plus he's violent and unhinged. Interesting? With all due respects to

So the Leafs have now fired their assistant GMs to go along with their fired assistant coaches but retained their GM and coach.

Why do I feel that this upcoming season is going to suck?

July 22, 2014 @ 12:21 PM

Corey

@Phil
You need to be told. You're attempts to police comments and lectures on how to write isn't helpful. It's fucking annoying. All it does is devolve into petty arguments. Reply to the topic or ignore the comment.

July 22, 2014 @ 12:29 PM

McNulty

@ Argie

The logic with those dismissals....

They did exactly what their coach told them to do. And the they did exactly what their GM told them to do. So...since the coach and the GM were clearly wrong it is the fault of the assistants for not doing something else. Therefore they should be fired.

Now they will hold secret meetings to find the right assistants to blame for next season!

July 22, 2014 @ 12:31 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Argie - You feel that way because you're right

@ McNulty - Next year they'll blame the fans...cause we're about the only ones (other than themselves) that are left to blame.

You're
You're is a contraction of you are. It has no other uses. This is a 100% rule. If you cannot expand it to you are in your sentence, then it is wrong.

Examples:

The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win, you're still a rat. (Lily Tomlin)
(Expands to you are – correct)

Doing nothing is very hard to do. You never know when you're finished. (Leslie Nielsen)
(Expands to you are – correct)

Please ask Joan to post the parcel when you're in London.
(Expands to you are – correct)

You said that you couldn't believe you're ears.
(Does not expand to you are – should be your)
Your
The word your sits before another word (usually a noun or a pronoun) to show that it belongs to "you" (e.g., your car, your arm), is of "you" (e.g., your picture, your photograph) or is related to "you" (e.g., your uncle).

Your is a possessive adjective. (Other possessive adjectives are: my, your, his, her, its, our, and their.)

Examples:

Our expert will answer your questions about pensions and savings.
(questions belonging to "you")

Sarah doesn't look like your sister.
(related to "you")

July 22, 2014 @ 2:52 PM

Grammar Police

Argie -

he = who
him = whom

Examples:
Who/Whom wrote the letter?
He wrote the letter. Therefore, who is correct.

Who/Whom should I vote for?
Should I vote for him? Therefore, whom is correct.

We all know who/whom pulled that prank.
This sentence contains two clauses: we all know and who/whom pulled that prank. We are interested in the second clause because it contains the who/whom. He pulled that prank. Therefore, who is correct.

We wondered who/whom the book was about.
This sentence contains two clauses: we wondered and who/whom the book was about. Again, we are interested in the second clause because it contains the who/whom. The book was about him. Therefore, whom is correct.

Note: This rule is compromised by an odd infatuation people have with whom—and not for good reasons. At its worst, the use of whom becomes a form of one-upmanship some employ to appear sophisticated. The following is an example of the pseudo-sophisticated whom.

Incorrect: a woman whom I think is a genius

In this case whom is not the object of I think. Put I think at the end and witness the folly: a woman whom is a genius, I think.

Correct: a woman who I think is a genius

I'm sorry, I can't explain what CQ just said. I don't think anyone can lol

Philip-Robert -

Hyperbole (/haɪˈpɜrbəliː/ hy-pur-bə-lee;[1] Greek: ὑπερβολή hyperbolē, "exaggeration") is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally.[2][3]

Hyperboles are exaggerations to create emphasis or effect. As a literary device, hyperbole is often used in poetry, and is frequently encountered in casual speech.[4] An example of hyperbole is: "The bag weighed a ton."[5] Hyperbole makes the point that the bag was very heavy, though it probably does not weigh a ton.

Hope that helps :)

I have always despised OLP and thought they were rip off artists shortly after the grunge era began.

July 22, 2014 @ 3:54 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Mike - Who exactly did they rip off. Love them or hate them, OLP have one of the most distinctive sounds out there. You immediately know when you are listening to an OLP song....Now, I'm of the opinion that they haven't had a good album since Spiritual Machines, but rip off artists??.....nah

July 22, 2014 @ 4:10 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

OLP had a good run.... a string of big CanCon hits on high rotation on CFNY and MuchMusic. I've personally spent real money to see them live and will sing along with one of their hits when it comes on the radio.

Hell, I'll sing 4am by myself.... still love that song.

But even Jeremy told me during that episode that they were inspired by other musicians at the time. I wouldn't call them rip-off artists.... many bands are inspired by the sounds of others.

I like them, but I can imagine Raine's delivery isn't everyone's cup of tea.

July 22, 2014 @ 4:18 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Mike - oh yeah, Raine has a very polarizing voice to be sure.

Out of curiosity...were you at Somersault 2000 (it was the last appearance of the original Smashing Pumpkins line up) OLP started playing 4am....all 20,000 of us started singing along and Raine picked up an acoustic and stepped away form the mike...let us sing it all (we even got the layering on the "I hope to God I figure out" part at the end).

It was one of those "goosebumps" moments for me

Sorry to hear Rogers canned Mary Ellen Beninger.

I remember her doing the news back on CFNY. In fact, she met her husband there.... some guy named Alan Cross.

Rogers has a bad habit of firing female broadcasters who have been around enough to make a decent wage. After all, a 23 year old out of college will do it for 1/3rd the price.

July 22, 2014 @ 8:24 PM

Wonder if Beninger losing her job was a factor in Cross accepting the new position.

The GoPro tether thing ... the internet is full of stories of people losing them one way or another. I'm pretty sure the instructions it comes with don't mention the tether point anywhere. Also those plastic pivots are just total crap. I really need to find a metal one.

Most bike accessories nowadays come with mounts that are affixed with quality rubber bands. I think that's a big problem with the GoPro ... zero shock-absorption.

Mike, sad news, always enjoyed her voice and delivery. Sucks to be deemed too old and expensive, and all the talent is forgotten. Given the cash cows that Bell and Rogers control, all they are beholden to is the investors.

I think Jeremy should have left sooner. The last two OLP albums were complete and utter garbage. The only saving grace is he left before they released their latest single. It's actually worse than garbage and I couldn't even make it through half the song.

I know we all have moments where grammatically our sentences aren't structured right or we misspell words. In CQ's case, sometimes I re-read his comments 3 and 4 times and have no idea what he's saying. He writes like someone who talks without ever truly finishing one sentence before he starts another.

I agree with Mike, nothing you said CQ is self explanatory.

Thanks. I just listened to it. Well, that's right he did get inducted, but he should also be the king. Bob Seger is alive so he should be the king and not Elvis. Well, forget Rogers and Bell. Everyone should just get rid of those two cash grabbing companies and get Primus. Primus has won several awards for best company. Primus hardly ever goes down. Primus has great customer service if you need them, but most of the time they're not needed as Primus is so reliable. Anyone who switches to Primus won't be sorry they did, believe me. They also don't bombard anyone with junk mail.

I used to follow WWF wrestling in the mid-to-late 80s.

I remember when Handsome Harley Race came back... they made him king, with a crown and everything. This crown and title became like a new belt... people would wrestle to be king.

It would be fun if rock had a similar crown and it could be won by others... so someone could actually take the title "king" from Elvis. I doubt Bob Seger would be up to the challenge, but I'd like to see Chuck Berry give it a go... or maybe Alice Cooper.

seeing his obvious
halo

RIP Bill Stephenson sports commentator mainly with 1010 CFRB in the 60's-70's who Brian Williams said was his mentor today on the news.

One of the best ever.

Yes, why wouldn't Subban be the great one. Gretzky doesn't play anymore. well, I finally get to meet my trainer's kid. Well, it won't be for a few weeks though, but it will be on August 16 when they will come to Toronto to go visit other friends, but will drop in for a visit with me first. That will be good. Anyway, I love Bob Seger. He has a beautiful voice. He's alive. You can't have a dead king so that's why I'm saying Bob Seger should be king.

@Cheryl -

Some people believe Elvis is still alive. Maybe he's hiding in Hawaii or something, but if he's alive than he's king. Who knows. Even if he is dead, he might still be king. Jesus is dead but he is king because he rose from the dead and is the one true lord. So if dead Jesus is king of the world, then dead Elvis is the king of rock and roll. Elvis is the king and Bob Seger is just the prince. How about that?
