The more Olivia Chow talks...the more I realize that she really has no clue. For the sake of this city, let us not go from one extreme (Ford), to another.

I think its great that Chow is against gun crime. I'm sure Tory, Ford and the others are also against murder, stealing, rape and other crime.

One of her advisors might want to tell her we already strict gun control laws.

July 15, 2014 @ 8:39 AM

Actually

The evidence suggests Ford is pretty okay with gun grime.

July 15, 2014 @ 9:18 AM

What did everyone think of the world cup?

I thought it was a great..some matches became a little to cagey but over all a great tournament and the best team through out won (although had Argentina not missed three glorious chances that may not have been the case)

July 15, 2014 @ 9:22 AM

Happy birthday Elvis!!!

@ Argie- yup...you know you put your foot in it when Rob Ford is correcting you. Gun laws are a Federal thing. Municipalities have little to no say in this

If you could have one singer (not a band) stop by your house and sing a few songs, who would it be?

I would choose Tom Waits.

July 15, 2014 @ 9:46 AM

@4X4
I would prefer if they brought a guitar and a few backing musicians. If that's the case, Dave Matthews.

Sugar Beach was mostly paid for with federal monies. But still civically engaged people have opinions. Or as in the case of Ford outright lies. Gun laws are federal but good thing civic politicians request/demand certain standards, enforcements, initiatives.

July 15, 2014 @ 11:36 AM

Argie

That Anonymous is funny.

July 15, 2014 @ 12:18 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Argie- You should check out some of Dave Matthews acoustic albums...the man needs nothing but a guitar.

So @ 4x4 - My answer is Dave Matthews...unless you can find a way to resurrect John Lennon....

July 15, 2014 @ 1:02 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Anon - there is a difference between saying that as a Mayoral Candidate you'd like to see more gun regulation, and saying you will do something about it.

The Mayor of Toronto has no power to enact gun laws...they can lobby the feds to make changes, but they themselves have no power whatsoever! This is a fact!

Chow was talking like she herself would make these changes. I wouldn't be comfortable electing someone who doesn't even know what powers they have....

July 15, 2014 @ 1:06 PM

mrmojorisinca

I hope to never see a Lennon hologram!

I'd Take Ed vedder or Neil Young, Jack White would also be very cool.

July 15, 2014 @ 1:07 PM

Chow is pointing out a clear difference between her campaign and the Ford campaign which is based on a personal cult of a drug user who hired a 'sobriety coach' to 'run interference' with his suppliers. It's utterly insane that gun and drug gangs should have to be kept at arms length from an elected official by a 'sobriety coach.' All Chow is doing is making a statement about what sort of a city she would like to live in. She knows very well that gun laws are a federal matter.

July 15, 2014 @ 1:53 PM

Argie

@Phil
I've heard a few of them. Cry Freedom (acoustic version) is terrific but to me the more the merrier.

Besides, it would be kind of awkward if its just one guy and his guitar serenading me, don't ya think?

July 15, 2014 @ 1:55 PM

Does anyone know how I can discourage rabbits from eating the plants in my vegetable garden? They've devoured my beets and broccoli plants. I worked too hard on this garden to let Bugs get the better of me.

I captured one in a cage trap but there are others who have avoided it completely.

They seem to breed like....um......I forget how the rest of that saying goes.

@ this guest - Love it!

@ Argie - if you are the downloading type, you should check out Dave Matthew & Tim Reynolds :

Live at Luthor College
Live at Radio City Music Hall
Live in Las Vegas

Certain songs, like Crush or Tripping Billies, are completely different songs when they're stripped down to just 2 acoustic guitars.

@ Nigel - you can keep trying man, but applying logic to someone who has none (like...say our buddy Anon) is just an exercise in Einstein's definition of insatiably.....

I still don't know who I'm voting for, but it won't be Ford or Chow. AS for singer I would like to be with, Bob Seger or John Mellencamp. That would be so cool if one of them could come. Happy birthday Elvis. Anyway, I don't know if my trainer's wife won or not. They went to a cottage for the weekend and missed the game and my trainer doesn't know if their team won or not.

Rob Ford says that he is the only candidate "fighting for underground transit".
His campaign manager Doug Ford insists that "putting commuters underground kills jobs".

Also, neither of these somnambulant fucktards is aware that over half the Eglinton LRT is in fact underground. Doug considers this a "war on the car" despite the fact that the LRT will remove a metric fuck tonne of buses from the road.

The only people on Earth exhibiting more concentrated stupidity than these two imbeciles are the braying idiots that somehow still support them.

chow's reasons for more buses:
So, for example, we need more buses — something we can address right now, so people at bus stops don’t have to watch overloaded buses drive right by them during rush hour. Sixty per cent of TTC rides involve a bus. For this reason, I propose the city provide the TTC with $15 million a year to improve bus service, right now. It’s a sensible short-term priority.

@Sammi,

Buses do alleviate congestion, substantially. In one simple gif, I'm sure Toronto Mike has linked this before:

I love Baseball as played during my early years growing up, coached my kids on Rep teams for many years & I love the Blue Jays & 2nd fave team are the Yankees. Remembering driving with my late Dad to old Yankee stadium in early 70's for a weekend.

Many of those players were & still are my favorites. Thurman Munson, Ron Gidrey, Chris Chambliss, Catfish Hunter, Don Mattingly & my fave of all time REGGIE JACKSON.

Tonight Derek Jeter will be playing his last All Star Game as he is retiring after this season. He only played for the Yankees & has been a true professional during his career without any "questions or accusations" about his time playing.

Gotta love this player even though a Yankee & what he has accomplished.

BTW - a known fact about Derek Jeter is that his parents named him after a Boston Bruin hockey player - Derek Sanderson & actually Jeter's middle name is Sanderson.

Jeter # 2 in my books

@markosaar - hate to be a stickler here, but that .gif really only illustrates the potential to reduce congestion if everyone riding streetcars and buses a) owned cars and b) abandoned them. The reality is quite different.

I would have Adele over for a little fire side sing along, if I had a choice.

Glad Humble and Fred are back, seemed like a long 2 weeks. Saw Mark Correia (Escaping Parkinson fundraiser) in my local paper this past weekend. Nice to see he got some time to explain his cause on H&F Monday, and if anybody is worried about the youth of today ever amounting to anything, he puts these negative thoughts to rest.

Chow hasn't spoken as well since she suffered that bout of Bell's Palsy but
i like her civic policies. I find Soknacki very engaging and intelligent. Stinz is making up for inspiration with exhortation. She looks like she would get excited about playing Santa at the office party. Ford is very adaptable to being programmed and repeating canned lines. Tory is a smooth customer as befits one of his pedigree and grooming.

I still maintain that Soknacki is the true dark horse in all this and I can only envision
his support growing.
I was very happy that Chow attacked Ford as a bad role model for children and brought up her successes under Lastman.

Socknacki is ideal, but he can't win. It's too bad, because I really like him.

My vote is still with Chow, but I'll be happy if anyone but Ford wins.

The day after Labour Day I'll pop out of the Winchester and see what's happening.

Guys, Ford was able to access child care spending stats instantly for a "random" audience question?! I'm so thinking these questions were set up or given to Rob.

Are there anymore debates? Chow better hope there aren't and Tory better hope there are.

Given the cheer squad for Ford, and the planted questions, do you have any doubt he hired the audience? Well, I guess since he's sober now, he can afford to pay a bunch of homeless kids in crack. Half-now, half-later-- especially half-now, so they're properly riled and tweaked and loud.

"Weird Al" is blowing me away this week. In two days he debuts two videos. Both videos are brilliant. The first one, "Tacky", is just excellent filmmaking. One long continuous shot without cuts. The staging of it is incredible.

Then he produces Word Crimes and the writing is fantastic. Yeah, he's no Tom Wait (my choice for a private concert) but the dude bleeds talent.

Anyway....back to Rob Ford....

July 16, 2014 @ 8:01 AM

markosaar

@Corey,

Well it's idealised sure, but I generally don't ever see any empty street cars on the Queen & King routes during rush hour. Whether all those people would drive cars instead I can't really answer. Probably? Gotta get to work somehow.

@Paul,

What's dumb about it? Maybe hyperbolic, but it's pretty clear Ford's team had audience plants asking him weirdly specific questions that he magically had stats ready for.

The auditorium was also full of people shouting down the other candidates whenever they tried to speak, but that could just be Ford's popularism at work.

July 16, 2014 @ 8:19 AM

markosaar

@McNulty,

I listened to the album last night -- really liked the Pixies-style First World Problems. Hope it gets a video too -- twelve tracks, with eight videos in eight days. "Foil" was pretty good too.

He did a reddit ask-me-anything yesterday:

Karen must have gone home last night and reenacted every question and reply in
the mirror.
Rob had a legal sedative and accidentally called his wife 'Viva.'
John Tory had a finest of the fine Scotch in a crystal glass once owned by Lord Mountbatten.
Olivia reminded herself to get a new back tire for her bike and to not let herself be shouted down again by Ford's Cretin Army.
Soknacki fiddled with some statistics about creative innovation labs for youth.

The 'spontaneous' audience questions were recycled. Then retrieved and burned.

This is the thing that pisses me off with municipal polititians. They forget about where their boundaried are. Gun control laws are a Federal thing. She can say that she would like to make the sky pink, she has no control or say on the matter.

July 16, 2014 @ 9:24 AM

@this guest,

I started reading Moe Berg's The Green Room.

First glance I felt like I couldn't fairly review it -- I have little context for modern canlit, or books of this style.

But the further I got, it really felt like an extension of his songwriting. Brutally honest -- reminded me of some of his more cringe-inducing songs like One Thing or Shave Your Legs from One Sided Story. But as I read, I remembered virtually all his songs are sort of like that, just perhaps more subtle on later albums. The short stories are more crass, and leave less to the imagination.

Much like listening to TPOH, I've found myself wincing at some scenes or language. Also though the protagonists are given names like, "Peter" or "Adam", I can't help but wonder how much is autobiographical. Especially about ex-girlfriends, or when he talks about thinking he has a herpes sore.

I am finding it compelling, and will finish in a few days.
