Support Me and Help Conquer Cancer

Thanks and Pleas: RTCC 2014On June 7-8 I'll be embarking on a 220km bicycle ride across Ontario in support of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. This means a great deal to me personally for two reasons:

1. It's the month I turn 40, so a monster physical goal like this is the ideal way to celebrate.

2. Just before Christmas, my good friend was being cared for at the Princess Margaret. This is my way of saying thanks.

Donate to my ride by clicking right here. The following fine people have already done so, and I'm extremely grateful:

  • Ellen M.
  • Rick C in Oakville

This is a great start, but I've got a long way to go to hit my target. In fact, if I don't hit $2,500, I won't be allowed to ride. Do it for my 40th, do it to help conquer cancer and do it for my buddy Mike.

Let Them Play

Let Them PlayMy kids didn't have recess yesterday. Well they had the break, but they were told they had to stay inside. The powers that be deemed it too cold to play outdoors.

I agree with this Toronto pediatrician who says the health benefits of staying active during winter far outweigh the health risks of cold exposure. "If you dress your kids up properly, if you dress them according to the weather, there really isn't much risk," he said.

I don't mean to sound like an old fart here, but I don't remember being kept inside for a single recess because it was too cold. Kids spend enough time indoors... bundle 'em up and let them play!

Pete Seeger, Dead at 94

In MemoriumPete Seeger was 94. He was the singer, folk-song collector and songwriter who spearheaded an American folk revival and spent a long career championing folk music as both a vital heritage and a catalyst for social change. Seeger's best known songs include "Where Have All the Flowers Gone," "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)" and "If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)."

I strongly urge you to seek out the documentary Pete Seeger: The Power of Song for more on this extraordinary individual. The world will miss Pete Seeger.

Jim Henson Memorial Service - Just One Person

There were two public memorials for Jim Henson in 1990, and both closed with "Just One Person" performed by Muppets. Here's one of those performances.

"Just One Person" was written for 1975's Snoopy! The Musical, but it's this version for Jim Henson that gets me every time.

The 2nd Raptor 51 Point Game I've Seen Live

Air CanadaMy daughter and I were at the Raptors game tonight to witness Terrence Ross score 51 points and tie a franchise record.

I was there the night Vince Carter scored 51 back in 2000. Here's my ticket stub from that game. It sort of blows my mind that I've been at the ACC for both games to feature 51 point games from a Raptor, considering I don't go to many Raptors games.

If anyone is good at math and wants to do the calculations, I've probably been to 12 Raptors games in my life. I'll bet the odds of seeing both 51 point games are pretty miniscule.

We were actually tied with the Clippers at 102 late in the fourth quarter, making this an incredibly entertaining game. My daughter loved it, including the half-time performance of "Whoop! (There it is) by Tag Team.

My poor daughter now thinks all basketball games are this exciting #raptors

A big thanks to the awesome people at Ford Canada who gave me these tickets so I could take my buddy. My buddy wasn't feeling up to it tonight, so my daughter happily pinch hit.

21 Years Later, I Just Had a Simpsons Epiphany

21 Years Later, I Have a Simpsons EpiphanyWhile shovelling snow this morning, I started thinking about The Simpsons episode "The Front", the 19th episode of season four in which Homer attends his Class of 1974 high school reunion.

In this episode, Homer wins several awards, including one for travelling the least distance to be there.

And the person who traveled the least distance to be here-- Well, kiss my grits! - Homer Simpson!

While shovelling snow, I thought this would be far easier to determine today. A program could easily take everyone's home address and determine who lived closest to the high school. But then, it hit me.

Why didn't Homer have to share that award with Marge? Don't they live together? Didn't they travel the identical distance to be at their reunion?

I originally saw this episode on April 15, 1993. That means it took me almost 21 years to have this epiphany. That's got to be some kind of record.

Once a Jays Fan, Always a Jays Fan

Once a Jays Fan, Always a Jays FanThe team you grew up rooting for is almost always the team you love as an adult. I grew up primarily rooting for our home teams, and no matter where I end up in this world, I know I'll always be a fan of Toronto's teams.

I recently found a box of old photos at my mom's house, and it included this one of me in my Blue Jays shirt.

Me in my Blue Jays shirt

Years ago, I discovered this picture of me and my brother Ryan.

Ryan and I as Kids

Once a Jays fan, always a Jays fan.

I'm interested in examples where someone was raised rooting for one team, and switched allegiances as an adult. For example, was anyone raised a Montreal Canadiens fan but became a Leafs fan? Perhaps you were raised a Detroit Tigers fan but grew up to become a Jays fan?

Tell me your story below!

  • Skype - I use Skype daily
  • Songza - great music playlists streamed on-demand
  • Street View on Google Maps - for Google Maps
  • theScore - for sports scores and following my teams
  • TuneIn Radio - whether I'm listening to CBC Radio, indie88, 102.1 or a station London, England, this app is amazing
  • Twitter - for Twitter
  • Voice Search - a must-have Google app for Android
  • YouTube - so my kids can watch music videos and epic rap battles of history

Starting From Scratch with Baby Stuff

Starting From Scratch with Baby StuffMy wife will be 27 weeks pregnant on Wednesday. That's got us thinking about all the stuff we'll need for our newborn son.

It's been a decade since I went through this with my daughter, and we still had most of the baby stuff from her older brother, who was only two at the time. But to be honest, I thought I was done, so I didn't keep a damn thing. Now, we're essentially starting from scratch.

So far we've bought one item, a new high chair from a Sears clearance sale. My wife has been doing her homework with regards to which stroller she wants, which car seat makes sense and what crib little Jarvis Henry will be sleeping in. We need it all.

If you have any baby stuff you don't need anymore, let me know. Except a high chair... that I've taken care of.

When Did "The Shit" Become a Good Thing?

When Did I still remember the first time I heard something was "the shit". The "the" in "the shit" is vitally important, for without it, the statement means the exact opposite.

When something or someone is "the shit", it means they're the best, but when they're just "shit", it means they're... well.... shit. Personally, I'd rather be "the shit".

But when did "the shit" become a good thing? A post on Urban Dictionary attributes it to drugs.

the shit
The best. Originated as a term to describe high quality drug substances. IE, "this is good shit."

Evolved to common usage for any item of high quality. However, in typical usage, the article "the" is required to denote superiority. Without the word "the" prefacing the word "shit," a different, usually negative, meaning applies.
This joint is the shit./This is potent marijuana.
His new car is the shit./His car is excellent.

This joint is shit./This is poor quality marijuana.
His new car is shit./His new car is not desirable.

Wikipedia is less helpful:

In slang, prefixing the article the to shit gives it a completely opposite definition, meaning the best, as in Altered Beast is the shit, or The Oregon Trail is the shit. Again, other slang words of the same meaning, crap for example, are not used in such locutions.

Does anyone know when we started saying something awesome was "the shit"? Can anyone confirm the origin of this term?

  • Mike Smith, Phoenix Coyotes

I'm not sure I'd have chosen Marleau and Kunitz, and it's interesting that Claude Giroux didn't make this team, but who am I to argue with Steve Yzerman?

E-Bikes in Bike Lanes? Don't Legalize It!

Electric Bikes Don't Belong on Bike PathsBack in June, I shared my thoughts about e-bikes in bike lanes. I thought it was a bad idea. I still do.

A newly released city staff report recommends that the city make it legal for e-bikes to ride in most bike lanes.

This is a very bad idea. If you're not pedalling your bike, you don't belong in the bike lane. I fully understand the allure of e-bikes as an alternative to a car or motorcycle, they don't require a license or insurance and are a far greener mode of transportation, but for a cyclist in a bike lane they're downright dangerous.

If you're not pedalling, you belong on the street with cars, not on a bike lane with cyclists.

From the Buick Encore to the Mazda Protegé: 5 Biggest Differences

From the Buick Encore to the Mazda Protegé: 5 Biggest DifferencesI just returned the Buick Encore I've been driving the past two weeks. As I started driving my freezing cold '99 Mazda Protegé, these were the biggest differences.

No More Silence
The Buick Encore was much, much quieter. In my old Protegé, I hear everything... it's loud in there. The Encore offers a comfy, quiet ride.

Back to Being Low
The Encore is what they call a "Luxury Crossover", essentially, a small SUV. Although I've test driven several cars higher off the ground than the Encore, it still takes a while to get used to how comparably low you are in the compact Protegé. It feels like I'm sitting on the road.

No More SiriusXM
The Encore GM lent me had SiriusXM radio, which meant I got to hear the best of Howard Stern in 2013. That kept me thoroughly entertained as I heard Stern interview Jerry Seinfeld, Mike Tyson, Kid Rock, Jason Bateman and more. I also got to hear the episode when they discussed Robin's cancer. It was both heavy and inspiring. I miss it already.

No More Rear Backup Camera
Of all the features found on modern automobiles, the one I always miss most is the rear backup camera. I put my Protegé in reverse and my eyes immediately shot to the dashboard to see what was behind me. I was very disappointed.

Nothing Beats New
My car will turn 15 this spring. It looks old, it smells old and it drives old. It's tough to go back to old when you've been enjoying that new car smell, that new car cleanliness and that EcoTec3 1.4L I-4 138hp engine intercooled turbo, 6-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), side seat mounted airbags, curtain 1st and 2nd row overhead airbags, rear side-impact airbag, driver and passenger knee airbag, airbag occupancy sensor, air conditioning, 18" aluminum wheels, cruise control, ABS and driveline traction control, and a StabiliTrak electronic stability.

Picking up my ride for the next 10 days. Glad it's Santa red! #buick #encore #gm

1986 W5H Metro Champs (Almost)

W5H Metro Champs (Almost)Not to brag or anything, but I led our "small Separate school" to a "Metro-wide second place showing" in the 1986 W5H competition.

W5H Champs

This article appeared in the Bloor West Villager. I'm the cool looking guy in the front row who needed a haircut and tucked his shirt into his shorts, as was the style of the day.

Mimico: What's So Special About Mimico?

Mimico: What's So Special About Mimico?During yesterday's Winter Classic, Detroit's Brendan Smith was referred to as being "from Mimico". A couple of Leafs, Dave Bolland and David Clarkson, are also "Mimico boys". In high school, I heard all about the legend of alumnus Brendan Shanahan "from Mimico".

For the unaware, Mimico is a neighbourhood in southwest Toronto, part of the old Borough of Etobicoke. Mimico is not in any way separate from Toronto. Anyone from Mimico is actually from the city of Toronto.

mimico

Full disclosure: I now live in the Toronto neighbourhood that borders Mimico to the west and seriously considered buying in Mimico. My new neighbourhood is called New Toronto, but you'll never hear someone's a "New Toronto boy" or "from New Toronto". They'll just be from Toronto, or maybe Etobicoke.

My question is simple... Why are those from Mimico labelled such as if it's seperate from Toronto? What's so special about Mimico?
