Congrats, Mike!

May you be poor in misfortune, rich in blessings, slow to make enemies and quick to make friends. And may you know nothing but happiness from this day forward.

Queston for the hivemind:

Does anyone still deny that the video of Ford smoking crack exists?

If 3 reporters seeing it wasn't enough, Ford's name is all over the police wiretaps, and has been for weeks before the Gawker story broke.

Just wondering if anyone is still in denial...

Have a great weekend, Mike.
All the best to you, and the soon to be Mrs. Toronto Mike!

Oh there's a video all right.

Most damning in a sea of damning reports? This one with police sources confirming that Rob Ford knew the men in his infamous 15 Windsor Road photo.

"I take pictures with lots of people" just doesn't cut it when cops say otherwise.

Congrats and best wishes to our most excellent moderator but let's not forget it's also Father's Day weekend.

Where's the honeymoon taking place?

Congrats Mike!

Question for H+F... where's Kinder?

Normally when he's out of town there's a lot of talk about where he is, etc. It's as if Kinder's been deleted from the show.

Thanks everybody. Still lots to do but looking forward to the big party tomorrow.

And yes, happy Father's Day to fellow dads. I can't wait to have some fun chill time with my kids on Sunday. My son is my best man.

@No Dope

All reasonable people are reasonably sure there was (or is) a video of Rob Ford smoking crack.

@markosaar

Go Hawks!

@Anonymous

We'll honeymoon in October in Venice.

@Andy

Jason Kinder is no longer with the Humble and Fred show. His last day was May 31. I don't think Humble and Fred have ever mentioned this on the show.

As Kinder told me yesterday, he had a great 20 months with the show, but Humble and Fred wanted to go in a different direction.

Kinder, if you're out there, good luck to you. You seemed to do a good job.

"A different direction". I hate that term. It's one of those vague, empty and pat responses that suits usually use.

I noticed Kinder hadn't been contributing very much lately. Too bad. I liked him.

@Corey, I liked Kinder's dry wit, and was wondering what was up with his non contribution lately. Just figured he was off on vacation.
Met him at the Nut Hut Shit show 1 year anniversary, a really nice guy.
Good Luck JK, let Mike know where you land.

After reading Mike's and other posts about the Ford Edge, I can't help but take a moment for a little rant. Kindly indulge me and my "logic".

Being a Driver (and and instructor at advanced driver clinics/schools), I am very much against being forced to take my eyes or hands off of the task of having full control of my car. That is exactly what is happening with the stupid consumer desire to have everything be touchscreen. There are some systems that are better, but changing volume, tone, radio station, audio track, the fan, temperature, etc. should not require me to take my eyes off of the road for even a second, let alone three to five seconds. Three to five seconds? That is what the NHTSA's has determined it takes a typical driver to perform a task on current touchscreen systems in cars. NHTSA is in the process of setting a requirement of under two seconds (still not quick enough - read on).

Nearly all auto manufacturers had actually developed excellent audio and heat-A/C systems, with tactile buttons and knobs that a driver could very quickly master the use of without having to take one's eyes off the road. By definition, a touchscreen requires you to look carefully to ensure that you are going to touch the screen in the exact position required. At 100 km/h, that's over 27m or five full-size car lengths per second. The best performance cars on the road cannot stop from 100 km/h in that distance (that becomes possible, not necessarily likely, as you get below 60 km/h). Redundant controls on the steering wheel do help, but touch screens, in the hands of the typical driver are nothing short of a collision waiting to happen. When an inattentive touchscreen using driver has that inevitable collision, it will not be an "accident", because the driver will be at fault.

June 14, 2013 / 10:08

Rick C in Oakville

@Douglas: My Prius has the steering wheel controls also, takes a bit to become accustomed to, but work quite well. Being in the medical technology field, I wonder how long the touch screens will last in a cars hostile operating environment, and the costly repairs that would bring.

June 14, 2013 / 10:10

Lorne

@Douglas: 100% agree. Touchscreen controls are a horrible idea in a car. I hate them. I can control everything in my car by touch without taking my eyes off the road because of knobs, buttons and tactile feedback. I would never want a touchscreen device.

I even hate the touchscreen on my mp3 player. My old one (well, a palm pilot) had physical buttons. I could exercise and change the song by touch. Now I have to look at the screen to change songs. Even on a treadmill I notice the distraction. My speed and pace go down for a moment while I look down to change. I can't imagine what this would do to a driver!

I'm hoping auto manufactures give up the touch screen in favor of on-steering wheel controls. I would love to be able to adjust volume and station without even taking my hands off the wheel. I'm seriously tempting to buy a little bluetooth keyboard so I can glue it to the steering wheel (away from the airbag, of course). =)

June 14, 2013 / 10:11

Al The Royal Pain

@Douglas

I couldn't have said that better. I suppose as we move closer to self-driving cars, this will become less of an issue...but I swear to god that either I'm getting grumpier in my old age (and I'm only 38) or people are becoming worse drivers. Encouraging them to take their eyes off the road even for a second frightens the hell out of me.

I'll be the guy who'll still be looking for the manual transmition car when everyone else is sitting in their self-driving googlemobile.

Sorry to hear Kinder's gone. Was also wondering.

@Speysidephil: disagreeing with you doesn't make this blog "far left". Though I suppose anything is relatively far left compared to your opinions.

I consider myself fiscally conservative, socially liberal. To me, the Ford video has NOTHING to do with being left or right. Hell, to a certain extent I don't even CARE that he's mayor and may have smoked crack. It's the hypocrisy & lying about it.

Happy Friday, Kids!

I know I'm behind on my H&F episodes but even I noticed the lack of participation by Jason - met him at the Nut Hut Shit Show and thought he was a sweet and pretty quiet, nice dude.

I don't care for that 'different direction' phrase either. It's a lazy catch all that really says we don't want you any longer and we don't want to expend the energy and brain power going over it - so here's your hat, and what's your hurry. Somehow Jason never really seemed to be able to penetrate that H&F inner 'kindred spirit' circle. Not good, not bad, just is.

In any event, I hope this is a good thing for Jason and his talents will surely be in demand. A lot of changes to be sure.

Looking forward to following the live wedding tweet tomorrow while attending the New Student Orientation at Trent with my son. I'll be thinking happy wishes throughout (Mike, I loved where you said this would be Monica's first and only wedding - good for you - I thought that was sweet :)

I echo @Bo's comments - I hope you and Monica laugh long and often for many years to come. Enjoy each other and be good to each other. Congratulations on your many fortunes, Mike - dear friends, a wonderful family, priceless children and now a partner who is not only gorgeous, but smart. I loved hearing Rosie's enthusiasm on the podcast when talking about attending your wedding tomorrow - so genuine and kind.

And, Venice in the fall - perfect!

Take it all in, Mike. Have a total blast - life is short.

June 14, 2013 / 10:50

Congratulations Mike. Happy wedding.

Well, the Bruins are going to win tomorrow. They will. The thing isn't over yet. It's going to go seven games with the Bruins winning in seven. They're going to do it. The Hawks got lucky. Sure hope every game doesn't go so many overtimes. I love hockey, but the games are too late if they go to lots of overtimes. Remember June 26 is the last day and there will be a game 7.

Innocent until proven guilty.
Rule of law.
Burden of proof.

But only for people like us.
Right guys? Guys?

Oh yeah, he's guilty of something and we'll make shit up until something sticks. And I thought the lefties were the open minded ones. Sad, sad sad.

June 14, 2013 / 13:25

Oh yeah, we're open minded... but not stupid.
Regardless of ideology, an sane person would look at this and have an opinion that this guy is lying through his teeth.
Yes, he isn't guilty (yet), but don't leave your brain at the door because you think "ending the gravy train" is the most important thing when running the 4th largest city in NA.

June 14, 2013 / 14:03

Nigel Trousershrapnel

@anon,
So anyone who believes in due process is stupid?
Interesting take. Not one that I could support, but everyone is allowed an opinion.
A closed mind is an empty mind in my book, so I think I'll reserve judgement until the whole story plays out.

Novel idea, right?

In the meantime, let the man do his job, and when you get the chance, you can vote him out. That's how democracy works.
Or continue with the lynch mentality that seems to be very pervasive in the hallowed halls of the left wing fraternity.

Haters gonna hate!

Enjoy the weekend!

Have I found Rinse? In case people are still interested...

There's a "rinseout" posting on the social media site untz.ca. He's about the right age (24), and he's based in Southern Ontario. He had an active account...until his last entry on June 5th, 2012, in which he seems to have all but shut down his site (apparently there were pics, etc.) but it's all gone except for one "peace out" message posted on his wall.

June 5th, of course, is the day the 15 Windsor Rd. story broke, and when the Bassos became a news story. It's also the same date that the Rinse comment went viral.

Could be a coincidence, but maybe not?

June 14, 2013 / 14:54

markosaar

@Nigel, could you be any more condescending?

I could argue you're the one being close-minded by refusing to believe the accounts of 2.5 respected reporters. You can reserve judgement to whenever you want, that doesn't make anyone else close-minded. Close-minded would suggest that people refuse to incorporate new information into their opinions and/or world-view. We have yet to see the end of this story -- "we" would be close-minded if Ford is exonerated and refuse to accept it (and apologise for that matter).

I'm so sick of this "left-wingers" vs. "right-wingers" bullshit I see everywhere online, painting each other with such ignorant, stereotypical, broad strokes. I honestly don't know how anyone can identify with one particular side unilaterally.

It seems like religion to me: most people are born into it, and many never bother to question it because it gives them comfort and an identity.

First of all, what does "bsd" stand for? Do I have to live at Church and Wellesley to figure it out?

Secondly, tell us how did you "win"? Ford is still mayor, there's still no video, and it seems even the Star is running out of smear stories.

June 14, 2013 / 14:59

@Argie: trust me you don't care. It's another operating system, like when Mike suggests people replace Windows with Linux on their PCs.

June 14, 2013 / 15:21

@Markosaar,

Obviously anon has made up his mind, so no matter what happens next, anon has closed his mind to any argument other than his and those who support his belief.
It was he who suggested that anyone who didn't clearly see that Ford is lying isn't sane. A tad condescending, oui?

I merely point out the fact that evidence and proof are still required and we have yet to see any evidence or proof.

And to answer your first question, yes, I can be more condescending. A lot more.

Ask Argie or Liz.

Argie you stated adamantly that the crack tape allegations were the work of left wing media. The police have publically stated their wiretap traffic picked up mention of this tape. This was 2 weeks before the viewing.

Please admit you were wrong.

June 14, 2013 / 15:58

Tron

It's really becoming no point of trying to discuss this with Ford fans. The "no video, no proof" crowd literally means they will only change their mind (they say) if they see a video. Therefore no other proof can be presented to change their mind, imagine you have this person sitting on the jury who said only will convict if there's a video of the incident & no other evidence will be even looked out. They'd throw you out for being a loon. But that's Ford nation. Also Ford Nation now claims if there's not a conviction in court, than political wrong doings didn't happen. So I guess McGuinty power plants didn't happen?

The talk about if The Fords hang around drug dealers is not even a question, he does, and when asked about the photo of him in front of a known drug hut whose house is occupied by old friends of Rob with a bunch of drug dealers. His answer is to literally lie on radio by saying "I take pictures with a lot of people" Sure you do Rob, but not in your casuals, in front of a buddy place, who's known to have druggies come in and out, with everybody in the picture either shot or arrested.

Not sure what to make out of yesterday. The leak of Ford name being in the wiretap being send to CTV (BTW not a coincidence it was send to a new media source & not to GlobeStarCBC combo). Blair being pretty coy about everything, instead of just coming out and saying "Ford not involved". But on the other hand, today presentation Ford's old friend (Taverner)was front & Centre. With the Ford cloud hanging all over this situation, you would think there's a conflict here. Taverner was Ford's go to guy during the football/bus incident & wanting to push that Woodbine didn't increase the crime rate.

What is with political scum sneaking through the kitchen to avoid reporters. Today after his real estate board lunch speech, Ford snuck through the kitchen to avoid reporter just like Mike Duffy did back in February. Ford today "He did not speak with reporters when he left the event, ducking out through a back entrance and what appeared to be a kitchen or food serving area" Duffy in Feb "Duffy as he walked down the kitchen hallway while staff barred reporters from approaching him." These guys are all cut from the same corrupt mold. Sneaking out through kitchens are really normal behavior.

Ford today and Duffy in Feb

@Liz,
The gentleman asked if I could be more condescending. I said yes and suggested he check with you and/or Argie. I have, on occasion been condescending to many individuals, some deserving, and others just for fun. You know, for shits and giggles.

Guilt is relative, so I'm sure you're guilty of something, but that's not for me to decide.

Although speculative character assassination is rife on this site, my intention when I mentioned you and Argie, was honourable. It was merely to confirm that I can be more condescending.

1: You need some new material. Desperately. Please, for the love of cute fluffy things, go find you some.
2: Even you have got to be picking up on the fact people are picking on you. I mean okay, there's slow, but you have to have at least gotten to first gear. Also: Pretty sure your trainer wouldn't appreciate that you've escentially offered to hand over his contact info. You're lucky most of the folks here aren't jackasses enough to take advantage.
3: If it meant I wouldn't have to read your 8000th comment on how the Bruins are going to win it in 7 games and you wish there was 24/7 hockey, I'd be just fine with the playoffs ending in about 5 minutes.
4: With maybe 0.5 exceptions, no one cares. Kay? Kay. I'm done.

Anyone got any good heartburn home remedies? I don't get it often but 99% of the time I've got milk in the fridge which usually always works for me or gaviscon if/when I have some. Sitting here listenning to the new Sabbath album. Still not quite sure how I feel about it yet. Guess I'll probably have to listen to it a few times before it growes on me. Most of the tracks on it are over 7 minutes long. Tony and Geezer are sounding great! As far as Ozzy... well, he sounds better than he did on Black Rain and Scream. I've always been a huge Ozzy fan but also think he should've retired after the Down To Earth Album.

June 15, 2013 / 18:34

Dean Dumbell

There's so much low-brow one-downsmanship on the radio now it's not often something is in such bad taste or so offensive it grabs my attention to the point of outrage, but The Dean Blundell Show at 102.1 The Edge managed it today.

Blundell, an Albertan and a talk show host based in Toronto, apparently finds humor in what is feared to be the drowning former Edmonton Oil King and Edmonton Oiler draft pick Kristians Pelss in Riga, Latvia.

While family, friends, fans and members of the Oil Kings and Oilers hope for the best and fear the worst while awaiting word on the fate of Pelss, who has been missing for three days, Blundell and his co-host used this unfolding tragedy as material on their show today – as pointed out by an Edmontonian going by the handle of JRM on Twitter.

Listening to the podcast of Blundell's show, which runs 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., made me numb – as numb as I felt when I first heard reports yesterday Pelss has gone missing was feared drowned. I'll resist the urge to mount the soap box here and let Blundell's routine speak for itself.

WHAT HE SAID

"Edmonton Oilers prospect Kristians Pelss disappeared without a trace after reportedly jumping off a bridge in his native Latvia. Pelss, who played two seasons with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the WHL is believed to have jumped into the dark of a river in the capital city of Riga, Latvia early Tuesday morning," said Blundell, reading the first part of the item in straight news style. "Rescuers have seen no sign of him, according to a news agency.

"His clothes were found on the scene but a search of the river failed to turn him up. Edmonton Oil Kings organization along with the Edmonton Oilers and AHL Barons ba-da-ba-da-ba-da said that reports of him going missing are being looked at this week. There's been contradictory information reported at times. They are hoping he returns to the Edmonton Oilers and Oil Kings organization shortly."

Then, the item takes a sickening turn.

"How much must it suck playing hockey in Edmonton when you . . . I'm not going back. I mean, you'd rather jump off a bridge in like a war-torn country in a freezing cold river than go back to Edmonton. Shame. I hope they find him. I've been to Edmonton. I know what that guy's talking about (laughs)."

I don't think George Smitherman posts on this board. I would love to know who the person postingas Cheryl's trainer and George Smitherman really are. I have no idea. Well, how about those bruins. They won. Unfortunately it had to go into overtime though. Well, it's Bruins in Seven. There will be a game 7. Oh how about PK Subban. He won the Norris. That's great.

I'm leaving. I know, I liked it here, but I had enough. You guys hate me, I know. You guys don't have to put up with me anymore. Of course you don't, so I'm gone, never coming back. All this stuff about my trainer and shuffleboard is not true. You guys talk about all the Ford stuff. Well, guess what. I'm sick of that as well. Anyway, no worries. I'm leaving. Bye and enjoy the blog without me. I know you will.

@Cheryl:
I'm not trying to be mean but if you're going, then just go. lol Every time I've seen a person post somewhere that they're never coming back they eventually always come back sooner or later.
Other than that I really don't know what else to say. It's obvious that people are just having a little fun messing with you. How the hell have you not figured this out yet? You've been visiting this blog for how long now? Not that I would ever condone or want this but trust me it could be much worst then someone posting as George Smitherman or your trainer and going to shuffleboard.
People are just messing with you and having a little fun. Relax.

@Glen - Where did you get that bee house? I'm interested in getting one.

@Douglas

Garden expert Mark Cullen has his own brand of bee house called "Mark's Choice Mason Bee House". You can find them at Home Hardware which is where I bought mine.

Hate's a strong word. No one hates you - we don't know you. A little advice, maybe mix your posts up a bit - a little of this, and a little of that. Variety is said to be the spice of life. I think then people will have other ways of interacting with you - ways that you might enjoy. So how about giving that a whirl? Outside of the Rob Ford stuff, everyone brings a little something different to the site, sharing different stories and ideas - whereas you seem to not. Is this remotely helpful? What do you think?

Yes, have always said that it's the colourful roster of characters that keep me checking in, including Cheryl's posts. Liz says all I would say, just mix it up a little.

Cheryl,

When I was a kid, I always thought I was "hated". I was born with a severe visual disability, was obviously different, I didn't fit in, I was teased relentlessly, and I was small (not sure what happened with the being small bit, but oh well...). So I understand your feelings and your point of view. Now with that said, though I don't like the teasing that comes your way, there's been much nastier stuff directed to and from a handful of posters here that have nothing to do with you. You get off pretty lucky.

I will not tell you to go or stay, as that is your decision. But if you choose to stay, the advice to mix up your posts a little with different information is great advice. And you can do that because I have seen you do it. And when you do that, it's refreshing. Look, there's nothing wrong with mentioning hockey, your trainer, or your grocery woes. But even the best entertainers need new material to keep themselves fresh and funny. So if you want to cheer for your favourite team, great, do that! But throw in a current event or two along with it. Something that interested you, something you did, something you want to do. You get the idea!

Look at our host, Mike. He has new ideas every day and he posts those ideas. I have zero interest in most tv shows, movies or rap, so I skip over that stuff and add my two cents to the posts I consider interesting. You, as a visitor, can contribute the same way. Pick a new topic that interests you, have fun composing a response, and people will respond to you!

I hate to bring the Ford debate back into things BUT....................the mayor of Montreal was just arrested on corruption charges. The London ON mayor literally stole money from taxpayers to pay for his kid's wedding and Hazel just dodged being thrown out of office despite the fact she was clearly in a conflict of interest (I guess they just felt sorry for the old lady) yet all we hear about in the news and blogs everywhere is how terrible Rob Ford is.

Really? Of all of the BS accusations, he's never been accused of stealing taxpayers' money, nor has he handed out govt contracts to friends or family and here's the important part: he's never been arrested unlike a few other mayors out there.

Let him govern and if you still don't like him in 2014, don't vote for him.

June 17, 2013 / 09:39

Pete

Did everyone loose their radar this weekend? I believe the @Cheryl "I'm leaving" post was from an imposter. Seriously, if it were Cheryl, wouldn't there have been a "Bruins in 7" at the end of that post? @Mike, can you confirm?

@Glen, thanks for the bee house tip, I had never heard of them before. My wife and I plant "bee friendly" plants in our back yard just to help the local keepers.

Also, congrats Mike and Monica, you 2 look very happy, but really, shouldn't you be updating the hockey pool page? ;-) I only need 13 points to get in to 2nd place and get my money back.

June 17, 2013 / 10:24

Cheryl

Okay. I'm back. I just got fed up, that's all and I felt I couldn't take it anymore. I don't just talk about one thing. I really don't. I have no idea where everyone gets that idea from. Anyway, I'm not here to hurt anyone at all, and I don't cut and paste anything at all. I just didn't understand the joke about shuffleboard. Okay. Let's just agree that you won't use the name Cheryl's trainer again because he never posts here and I really don't want that to happen. Anyway, Bruins will win in seven.

June 17, 2013 / 11:12

Ben Vidal

@ Argie: Sorry, but as all the Ford supporters tout the line with him. She was never charged, or found guilty. So your point on Hazel is moot.

As for handing out government contracts to friends and family? He's hired a bunch of people with no real experience, some of them filling roles that had never existed before. Oh then there is the business of him buying his business cards on the city's dime through his own company at nearly double the cost of regular city business cards.

I guess in your eyes all of that is fine?

Lastly Rob ford was arrested in Florida. So please stop lying and perpetrating the lie that he was never arrested.

June 17, 2013 / 11:21

Argie

Ben,

That's a poor effort by you.

Arrested in Florida? When was that? 10-15 yrs ago and totally unrelated to stealing taxpayers' money.

Again, no corruption nor unlike the other mayors who go untouched. I'll take Ford any day over those criminals.

June 17, 2013 / 11:45

@Glen - Thanks!

@Mike: Nice picture, but it seems like kinda fancy dress for just a dinner out. What was going on, were you getting married or something?

June 17, 2013 / 11:48

@Lorne everyone looked VERY fancy. It was spectacular on Saturday in the Distillery District, perfect weather and Luminato was on so it was extra bustling.
What a fun night. Mike what do you have planned for us this Saturday?

Speaking of Ford, I'm surprised no one mentioned the woman who got charged with assault for throwing juice on him!

June 17, 2013 / 12:20

@Mike. Congratulations! However I noticed both Heineken bottles appear to still be full ;) Have you ever tried the cans? I find it tastes better.

June 17, 2013 / 12:25

@Matt I'm also a fan of their minikegs. Great in winter where it can sit on my balcony, or when the girlfriend's away and it can reside in the fridge ;)

Mississauga Phil

@ Cheryl - I will freely admit I was posting as "Cheryl's Trainer", I was not attempting to hide it, and put my email address on every post (Mike can confirm).

Please don't take it as hate. Honestly I was a joke to try and get you out of your shell, and to mix up the content a bit. We all implored you to look into what a crook Smitherman is. He may have been nice to you, but Toronto would be much worse off with him as mayor, the man is dishonest and wasted billions of our tax dollars...this is just a fact.

I can promise you will never see another post from me as your "trainer" if you can promise to try and keep a bit more of an open mind.

....and seriously..how can you cheer for the Bruins if you're a Habs fan...I just don't get it

@Matt

I consumed three entire bottles of Heineken throughout the evening. I finished one while visiting Barry's table, then he got me a 2nd.... when I got back to my seat with that bottle, I saw a third already waiting for me.

There was also Mill St. organic which was a big hit, as well as plenty of liquor.

June 17, 2013 / 12:59

Tron

@Argie - Every time I try to walk away from the Ford subject, Argie PULLS ME BACK IN lol. The Montreal political corrupt story has been in the media for months, even years. MacLeans magazine even called Quebec the most corrupt province. There's been a heck of a lot of stories involving Montreal politicians (before they were charged) locally in Quebec and even nationally from even some of the same writers (Andrew Coyne for example) that have talked about Ford has his controversies.

This is the perfect example of the "alternative universe/Ford a victim" mentality Ford nation lives. Somehow there is never any media investigation on politicians ANYWHERE except Ford. If the Mayor is hanging around drug dealers and smoking crack, it's a story. That is what good investigation reporting does.

Can I ask a open question to the "Leave Rob Ford alone" crowd. Why do you say that? Do you feel about all politicians (if they win an election they are allowed free reign and impunity on everything else) or do you think drug trade is not a big deal (therefore I haven't heard anybody say leave those drug dealers alone who were gathered on Friday)

I am not the only person who finds the "Leave Rob alone" crowd to be some of the most absurd people out there. New York magazine, yes NEW YORK had an article showing Rob Ford fans who want the media to ignore the whole pictured and videotaped with drug dealers thing. Ford supporters are now being shamed on an international level. If other parts of the world view you and your leader as foolish and in the wrong, maybe the problem is with you and your leader. Below NY magazine just reprinted Rob Ford supporters twitter just to show the world Fools nation.

Okay. Well, the Bruins beat the Leafs. They also beat the Pens, my second most hated team. Claude Julian used to coach my Habs. Anyway, I will cheer for the Bruins until they win the cup. Next season though I'll be back to my Habs and coyotes.
