Every cloud has a silver lining.

John Milton coined the phrase 'silver lining' in Comus: A Mask Presented at Ludlow Castle, 1634

I see ye visibly, and now believe
That he, the Supreme Good, to whom all things ill
Are but as slavish officers of vengeance,
Would send a glistering guardian, if need were
To keep my life and honour unassailed.
Was I deceived, or did a sable cloud
Turn forth her silver lining on the night?
I did not err; there does a sable cloud
Turn forth her silver lining on the night,
And casts a gleam over this tufted grove.

Today I learned that tanneries in India use pigeon poo to soften leather, thanks to an awesome doc series called The Human Planet. Highly recommended.

@Al

Pigeon poo has many practical purposes. It's also tasty on toast.

Went to the movies last night to see Now You See Me. The place was packed and my wife and I were in the last row, but dead centre.
Anyway, an older couple came in just before the start, and all the seats left were up high. They were obviously having difficulty getting up the stairs. Two young men, I am guessing early 20's get up and go down and help them up to their seats. At the end of the show, they waited, and helped them down the stairs.
I waited for the young men to come out of the theatre and told them how decent it was of their act of kindness, and offered to pay them back for their tickets. They would have no part of it, and just said, "Those folks needed help, and we helped them, no worries"..Good on those young men..

I see that the LCBO has ordered an automated inventory system.Currently, it is 1 year past promised delivery date and $450,000.00 over budget.

I wonder if kick-backs to the vendor and Ontario Government elected officials were paid long ago?

Just a thought,deep down I have a feeling I am incorrect.

A new study says you only need to see the dentist once a year.

http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/news/20130610/annual-dental-cleaning-may-be-enough-for-some-study

How often do you see the dentist? I go every six months...

Banger

@Toronto Mike

I take it no word from Rinse since March...

And has anyone contacted Jasmine?

Toronto Mike
June 11, 2013 / 11:18

@Banger

No word from Rinse since March...

And I haven't heard anything about Jasmine.

I do know that Rinse couldn't have tied Ford to Crack, an old Italian woman's house and a granddaughter named Jasmine with a mom with a crack connection without knowing what he or she is talking about.

In other words, Ford's caught in another lie and foolish enough to think he can get reelected by refusing to answer any questions about this.

@Another Lurker

I had a cleaning and checkup just yesterday. I get the cleaning every three months and the checkup by the dentist every six months.

@4x4
agreed, great story

@Dawn Keibals
Despite being slightly left of center and having never voted conservative, I would honestly vote for the politician who ran on the platform of cleaning up government by getting rid of pensions or benefits to any politician who ever broke public trust, and bringing them to proper justice...left or right.

@Another Lurker

I go as often as me benefits allow which is quarterly.

@Another Lurker - now that I don't have benefits I go to the dentist once every few years. And darn I only seem to get cavities when I go to the dentist.

As bad as the Crumble In Debt podcast is it somehow gets even worse when that annoying Josh Rachlis makes an appearance.

I would love to know how many tune in their SiriusXM show. I'll bet it's measured in single digits.

Just sayin'....

@ ABS - As anyone here will tell you, I am all in favor of same sex marriage, and am proud that my country is one of the world leaders in fixing this inequality....

However....I do find it kinda creepy that (in that picture at least) the men look like they could be brothers, very similar facial features....

markosaar
June 11, 2013 / 12:24

@Not Dean, not sure why you listen to Humble & Fred since you seem to only despise them. Might be time for a new hobby.

I have to agree though that Josh Rachlis is the worst. He almost fits, "it's so bad it's good", but no, he just keeps talking and it becomes plain terrible.

markosaar
June 11, 2013 / 12:27

@Mississauga Phil, people often say hetero couples "look like brother and sister," so I don't really find it different when applied to gay men. Both are creepy.

Hey Kids,

Since there are a lot of computer saavy people here, I'm hoping for some advice/help. I have an older computer that needs some attention - I'd like to keep it going for a little longer. I think it needs a few hours of love in the right hands. For example, it keeps telling me my C drive is full when I have deleted tons of things, and removed them. Anyway, for someone who knows what they're doing, the fix is problably no big deal. Thoughts?

markosaar
June 11, 2013 / 12:33

@Liz:

See if you can squeeze this programme onto your computer:

http://windirstat.info/

It'll give you great insight into where that space is going. Consider getting an external drive to move any music, videos, and maybe photos to. You'd be looking at $80-120.

Also I wouldn't be doing my due-diligence as a geek if I didn't suggest you consider a second external drive, or burning some discs, to insure any data you couldn't afford to lose isn't stored in at least two different places.

I hate to say it but when I see that Josh Rachlis is going to be on Humble and Fred I know there's a huge chunk of the show I'm going to skip through. Can't stand listening to Josh - he just not a fit for the show.

I miss Kelly.

Jewleen gets more annoying every single syllable.

I still laugh when Phil says, "Haroo." Especially when he attempts to sex-it-up.

Mississauga Phil

Toronto Mike
June 11, 2013 / 12:45

Fun fact re: Michael Leshner and Michael Stark's marriage...

It is indeed the first same-sex marriage in Canada since the Court of Appeal for Ontario confirmed that current Canadian law on marriage violated the equality provisions in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in being restricted to heterosexual couples, which does in fact make it the first legal same-sex wedding in Canada, but...

Some same-sex marriages were made legal retroactively, so there are same-sex couples in Canada who have been married legally longer than Michael Leshner and Michael Stark.

Argie
June 11, 2013 / 13:07

Well, I'm going to stay out of the whole same-sex marriage love-in as it futile to debate it here.

On a positive note, this woman in England is a true hero. She showed compassion and most remarkably, amazing courage during this imfamous heinous attack by the Islamaists.

I used to watch Tiny Talent Time as a kid.

Does anyone else have fond memories of Tiny Talent Time?

June 11, 2013 / 14:57

@Liz - interesting - I completely disagree with you! I find Jewleen's detached or laid back delivery endearing, and I think Phil is overdoing the "harooo" thing. It's starting to bug me. I notice they replaced Kelly's intro and extrovert. When I first heard the new one, it sounded like it was recorded in the public washroom at Union Station. Anyone else notice that?

Mike,

I remember TTT (of course we didn't call that back then). Does anyone remember a show on CFTO (channel 9) where people were encouraged to adopt an orphan? The theme song of the show was the Beatles "All you need is love". I think it was on Sundays.

Blind Dave
June 11, 2013 / 15:34

Yes, I remember both of those shows.

But I can't for the life of me remember the name of the adopt an orphan show. I can see it clear as day (never mind) and it's right on the tip of my tongue...

I go to the dentist every six months. I've been doing that all my life. Anyway, looking forward to the hockey tomorrow. Also as well, PK Subban is going to be awarded the Norris trophy during the finals. That's exciting as well. Anyway, Bruins win in seven games. I'm going to dread June 26 because after that, hockey will be all over for a few months.

Liz
June 11, 2013 / 17:35

@Corey I hear you! At first I thought Jewleen's style was refreshing - so maybe that's not what's grating. Maybe it's the fact that she never finishes things; leaves a bit hanging in mid-air.

The intro's and the extro's are done by a friend of theirs (Fred Ball's Mrs)- nothing against her - she sounds like a nice lady (from the interview) but Kelly has a way more compelling voice. Kelly added so much to the show! Eileen does too but in a much different way.

courtasy of raptor from UrbanTo

Ford parked illegally at First Canadian Place during lunch. Guy who took the picture told an officer that our beloved Mayor was parked illegally, his response "Oh, Okay" and drove rode off without doing anything.

Not sure what bothers me most, a)Rob entitlement to park illegally. b) authorities again doing nothing when he breaks the rules. or c) It literally takes ten minutes to walk from city hall to FCP (from Queen to King), the freakin underground PATH connects the two places if you don't want to go outside, but he still rather ride that behemoth for a block, yet he complains about traffic.

Rick C in Oakville
June 11, 2013 / 21:39

@Liz and Corey: Jewleen adds another dimension to the show, she is slowly developing her style. She may not have expected to be pushed into the limelight, but is adjusting.
Funny how we all like the program for a whole lot of different reasons, lots of variety for all. I actually like Josh's contribution, more maybe that he frustrates Humble when he goes off the rails on one of his stories.
Good Luck on Saturday Mike to you and Moneca.

Biggest problems with the Blue Jays this season so far:

Mediocre (at best) starting pitching.

It seems like every game they're behind by 2 or 3 runs in the first few innings. Hard to win many games that way.

Lack of situational hitting.

Frustrating inability to get bunts down, unable to make contact with runners on 3rd and less than 2 out and too many guys swinging for the fences instead of playing team baseball.

Shaky infield defence (partly due to injuries).

Too many extra bases/outs given, also contributing to the starting pitching issues due to extra pitches thrown.

Coco
June 11, 2013 / 23:08

Ummm, yeah.... the Josh Rachlis stuff on the H and F podcast is awful.

I skip his entire segments and if he becomes a regular I'm going to start skipping every episode.

Gary
June 12, 2013 / 07:49

@felix

Or to sum it up another way....they hired the wrong manager for this team. It needed a different voice and approach but they are too stubborn to acknowledge it and the cheerleaders on the Fan 590 get annoyed when anyone suggests it.

June 12, 2013 / 09:26

@Liz - Here's a small (4 MB) application that will clean "crap" (redundant, unused, leftover installation, etc. files) from your computer: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download

Get the free version download from FileHippo. I've never had a problem doing that. Install. The default installation options are safe (no "free!" add-ons). Go to the Cleaner tab on the left. The first time you run it, just use the "analyze" button, to see what and how much is going to get deleted. You have some options. Then run the cleaner. It's a pretty self-explanatory and safe application. Given what you said about your computer knowledge, I suggest you stay away from the Registry tab.

The application was rather appropriately called CrapCleaner earlier on in it's life, but now it just goes by CCleaner.

markosaar
June 12, 2013 / 10:01

Good tip Douglas, and nice to hear that a programme intended for cleaning out crap doesn't come bundled with it.

Cheryl
June 12, 2013 / 11:08

Well, just a few more hours left until hockey. Just nine hours left. Anyway, Bruins in seven with the last game June 26. Two more weeks of hockey yet. I don't care about the Jays. They suck. So rob Ford is lazy. He drives places that are within walking distance and parks illegally. What an awful mayor. He won't win again.

Banger
June 12, 2013 / 11:22

They meet at last!

Liz
June 12, 2013 / 11:37

@Douglas

Thanks for that! I'll give it a shot - and you're absolutely correct, I do need to stay far away from the Registry tab.

Hoping, with fingers crossed, that I'll be able to migrate to a Mac in the fall.

On another matter, I think Humble Howard would be just fine wearing a nice suit jacket to your wedding, Mike. He's the kind of guy who could carry it off beautifully. As Fred suggested, no one will be looking at him. They'll be studying the gorgeous Lady Friend - and of course, the beautiful bride. And, the weather is supposed to be perfect for a spectacular June wedding this Saturday. All the stars are lining up for you!

Toronto Mike
June 12, 2013 / 11:39

@ Liz

I never cared if Humble wore a suit to my wedding, but Rosie thought he should. I thought spiffy pants and a nice blazer was sufficient, because that's often how I rol!

But Humble is now going to wear his Hugo Boss suit... so crisis averted.

Corey
June 12, 2013 / 13:52

And Freddie will be wearing track pants and dress shoes.

felix
June 12, 2013 / 21:53

Gary,

Yeah, I'll admit it, when I heard it was Gibby again the excitement that I had been feeling about the season dissipated somewhat. I can't blame him for the starting pitching woes, though. Hardly his fault they can't throw consistent strikes.

A little late to the party, but hey, it's a party.

@Mike Congrats on your upcoming nuptials, as someone said, it looks like the weather is going to be awesome. Have fun and don't worry about anything.

@Not Dean, please return to the rock you came out from under. If you don't like the H&F show, stop listening.

@Tron, David Miller jay walked across Bloor Street, just west of Bay St a few years back (while mayor) and stepped right in front of my car. I had to brake hard enough to squeal the tires otherwise that fat pr*ck (he was large at that time) would have been road kill. He turned to me a smiled, I gave him the finger and my wife prevented me from more. Should I have called the police?

I go to my dentist once a year, he suggeste dit 15 years ago. I have a nice benefits package that I pay 100% myself as I own the Company. Yes, I pay my employees packages 100% as well.

@4x4 Time, excellent story, so great to hear that there are still nice, respectable people like those young gentleman and yourself.

I'm just getting in to Game of Thrones, so please, no spoilers, if you haven't seen any of GoT, >.
