Dave Bolland Traded to Leafs

Dave Bolland Traded to LeafsThe Toronto Maple Leafs have traded three draft picks to the Chicago Blackhawks for centre Dave Bolland. We'll give up #51 and #117 this year and our 4th round pick in 2014. Bolland, 27, scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal for the Blackhawks less than a week ago.

We're still looking for a #1 centre, so if you're a #1 centre and interested in playing for the Leafs, David Nonis would like to have a word with you.

The Month of Cars: Chevy, Ford, Infiniti and Hyundai

The Month of CarsThere's been an abundance of automobiles in my life this month.

It began with an invitation from Chevy to attend a retreat in a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. I took my buddy Elvis and we had a blast.

Then, for my wedding, Ford kindly lent me a 2013 Ford Edge in tuxedo black. It was perfectly roomy for hauling a ton of stuff to and from the venue.

Last week, I zipped around the city in a 2013 Infiniti M37xS. It was great fun to experience such luxury after 13 years in a Mazda Protege.

Now, I'm driving a Hyundai Genesis Sedan and my son and I have a road trip to Huntsville planned. I'm told there's a "blood-pumping" 348 hp from the 3.8 GT engine. I'll report back how it all went.

Untitled

No, this isn't the new normal, just a perfect storm of test drives that has left my old beater feeling neglected. The month of cars is winding down.

Nick Carter and I Ten Years Ago

This entry originally appeared on July 2, 2003.

Nick CarterI've gotta share this story, because it's too surreal not to post.

Yesterday my buddy Marc gave me a call and asked me if I wanted to join a pick-up game of softball a few of our fellow teammates started up. With a couple of hours before Ribfest, softball was just what the doctor ordered.

We arrive at the diamond and start warming up. We're waiting for a few more guys to show up before picking teams. Moments later they arrive, and one of these dudes is instantly recognizable. Lo and behold I'm about to play ball with Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys. No foolin'.

Now I'm not exactly a Backstreet Boys fan, but I'm well aware that there was no bigger band on this planet a few years ago. And on the Backstreet Boy scale, there was no bigger Backstreet Boy than Nick.

So that's my story. Just me and Nick playin' ball on Canada Day. Hot times, summer in the city.

For Dave Price, One of the Daves I Know

For Dave PriceDave Price is Rob Ford's Director of Logistics and Operations. Back in April, when we thought he was Robbie's old football coach, I didn't like the optics. We taxpayers were paying Price's salary to do who knows what and it reeked of payback. We have since learned from the Globe and Mail that Price is in fact Doug Ford's old hash dealing partner in crime. Like Dougie said, "You can't teach loyalty".

Recently, Dave Price was revealed to be a frequent caller into Rob and Doug's radio show on 1010. Dave would pretend to be a wide assortment of Toronto Dave's, raving about the Mayor and trashing his rivals. Somehow, Rob and Doug were never able to recognize his voice.

Don Peat, on the other hand, recognized Dave Price's voice when he called the Toronto Sun to complain about their headline for this story. Price has since been suspended for a week without pay.

This song is for Dave Price, a.k.a. Dave from Scarborough, Dave from Etobicoke, Dave from North York, etc.

Milos Raonic on Grass

Raonic on GrassMilos Raonic is the best singles tennis player in Canadian history. That's right, he's even better than Andrew Sznajder, believe it or not. He's the best we've ever produced, but you wouldn't know it from the Wimbledon betting odds.

The most exciting part of Raonic's game is his booming serve, which you'd think would make him a threat on grass. In reality, he's been awfully mediocre on the green stuff, going 8-8 over his short career.

With Wimbledon underway at the All England Club you'll forgive me if I keep my hopes for Raonic low.

Jonathan Bernier Traded to Leafs for Matt Frattin, Ben Scrivens and 2nd Rounder

Jonathan Bernier Traded to Leafs for Matt Frattin, Ben Scrivens and 2nd RounderThe Toronto Maple Leafs have acquired Los Angeles Kings backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier in exchange for forward Matt Frattin, backup goaltender Ben Scrivens and a second-round pick in either the 2014 or 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

I'm a big James Reimer fan, and the addition of Jonathan Bernier tells me Dave Nonis isn't sold on Reimer being a number one goalie. Bernier was stuck behind Jonathan Quick playing only 62 career regular-season games with the Kings, compiling a 29-20-6 record, .912 save percentage, 2.36 goals-against-average and six shutouts.

Is Bernier marginally better than Reimer or is he going to be another Toskala?

Our Wedding Duet: Anyone Else But You

Our Wedding Duet: Anyone Else But YouFollowing Monica's speech last Saturday, she wanted to sing a duet. I tried to talk her out of it but she was certain it would be fun. As usual, she was right.

Here we are singing our own rendition of The Mouldy Peaches' "Anyone Else But You". The lyrics are below the video. I apologize in advance for our inability to hold a tune.

You're my full-time lover and a full-time friend
The mane on your head was never the latest trend
I don't see what anyone can see
In anyone else but you

I kiss you on the brain during Leaf games
I kiss you all starry eyed, like Reimer skating from side to side
I don't see what anyone can see
In anyone else but you

I'm so damn glad that I've met my equal
We sure are great for two married people
I don't see what anyone can see
in anyone else but you

My love for you is completely out of whack
The mayor of this city really loves his crack
I don't see what anyone can see
In anyone else but you

I will find your glove in my car
With your chewing gum and chocolate bars,
I don't see what anyone can see
In anyone else but you

We both are cool with our difference in age
You want more kids, I need to hit the batting cage
I don't see what anyone can see
In anyone else but you

2013 Infiniti M37xS

2013 Infiniti M37xSI paid a visit yesterday to Infiniti Canada's head office where I received a thorough demo of a 2013 Infiniti M37xS. They also lent me one for a week so I could see for myself what this luxury automobile can do.

Untitled

It may surprise you to learn that I don't often drive luxury cars like the Infiniti M37xS. This model competes directly with the BMW 5 Series. It's way out of my price range, but you can feel that with every kilometre you drive. It's stylish, comfortable and fully loaded with a 3.7L, 24-valve, DOHC V6.

I'm only on day two of driving the 2013 Infiniti M37xS and so far it's feeling like more of a sports car than a 4-door sedan, and that's a good thing.

Electric Bikes Don't Belong in Bike Lanes

Electric Bikes Don't Belong on Bike PathsThere's a trend emerging that I'd like to nip in the bud. I'm an avid user of Toronto's bike lanes and trails, and recently I've seen people using these lanes while riding an electric bike.

It saw it again today on Royal York. E-bikes belong on the road with automobiles, trucks and motorcycles, not on bike paths.

While in Amsterdam last year, I noticed the electric bikes and scooters rode alongside bicycles on their extensive bike path system. I didn't like it there, and I hate it here.

If you're going to ride in the bike lane, use your pedals and turn off the motor. Thanks.

You Never Know in Sports: 2013 Jays Edition

Your Never Know in Sports: 2013 Jays EditionI've been a bit distracted lately with the wedding, the Stanley Cup final and NBA final. In fact, I haven't seen much Blue Jays action since I attended the longest game in Blue Jays history.

It seems things have changed dramatically these past two weeks. The Jays have won eight games in a row, and although we're still last in the AL East, we're only 4.5 games out of the wild card.

I didn't see this coming. Making the playoffs is still a long shot, but the fact we can talk about it on June 20 is pretty amazing. Of course, it required an 8-game winning streak to spark the convo, but there's no denying the fact the Jays are playing much better baseball.

This is why I love sports. You never really know...

Ford Edge Saves My Life (But Not Literally)

2013 Ford Edge in Tuxedo BlackOne of the things about planning your own wedding is that you've got to personally deliver a ton of stuff to the venue. I'm talking about liquor, beer, pop, juice, cupcakes, charger plates, table clothes, centerpieces, etc. I can't imagine how many trips in my old Mazda it would take.

Luckily for us, I was driving a 2013 Ford Edge this past week and this crossover has loads of space.

Untitled

In addition to being roomy, the Edge was great fun to drive. It's quiet, peppy and loaded with fun perks like keyless entry and start, a rear cam and blind spot warnings.

You Are Not Cheryl's Trainer

You Are Not Cheryl's TrainerHello friends...

I've been exchanging emails with Cheryl. I've never met Cheryl and don't know her outside of this blog, but she's been commenting regularly here since November 1, 2009. As of this moment, she's left 1,096 comments.

Cheryl can be awfully repetitive, going on and on about her love of the Habs, but I don't believe she's self-aware. As a result, I cut her a lot of slack.

I like her comments and I'd like her to feel welcome here. She's quite upset that people are giving her a hard time and some are impersonating her trainer. She assures me her trainer doesn't read this blog and doesn't play shuffleboard.

A fan of satire myself, I'm not going to ban parody commenters, but perhaps we can all give Cheryl a break and pick on someone else? I'm fair game, for example, and I highly recommend picking on elvis.

My TorontoMike.com includes Cheryl.

I'm Marrying the Most Organized Person in the World

I'm Marrying the Most Organized Person in the WorldI'm getting married on Saturday. As the day gets closer, I'm helping out where I can but mainly I'm blown away by how organized my future wife is.

We didn't hire a wedding planner, opting to do it all ourselves. The following parts all have to come together in perfect harmony Saturday:

  • Venue
  • Officiant
  • DJ
  • Chair rental
  • Dishes, napkins and a million other parts rental
  • Food
  • Desserts
  • Coffee
  • Booze
  • Wedding cake
  • Servers
  • Bartender
  • Photographer

Then, there's lots of legal stuff like:

  • Security
  • Liquor license
  • Photography permit
  • Marriage license

Not to mention the typical wedding stuff, from scheduling the day, making seating arrangements, writing vows, making a speech, organizing the wedding party, wedding favours, table centerpieces, etc.

It looks like it's going to be an amazing day and I know who deserves all the credit. Great job, babe!

Touring the GM Plant in Oshawa

Touring the GM Plant in OshawaAt the end of my retreat with the 2014 Chevy Impala, I was lucky enough to get a tour of the GM plant in Oshawa. Well, to be honest, the tour was only a small part of the 10 million square feet Oshawa Car Assembly, but it was still very impressive.

2013-06-04 10.37.20

Logistically, it's a mind bender. They make the Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Camaro, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Impala and Buick Regal around the clock, and everything runs like a finely tuned watch. It takes about 25-28 hours to build a car from start to finish

2013-06-04 10.46.11

There are approximately 5,400 hourly employees and 400 salaried employees, and many working in the plant have their own boombox blasting their own tunes. As you walk the tour you'll go from golden oldies to hard rock to classic rock and country.

When I've Been Wrong: Domingo Martínez

When I've Been Wrong: Domingo MartínezDuring yesterday's 18-inning Blue Jays game, my brother Steve and I reminisced about the best games we've seen live. One such game, on September 18, 1992, featured a highlight from Domingo Martínez.

Domingo Martínez was a beast, and with Rance Mulliniks on base after his final career hit, he hit a monster 2-run homer to deep CF. It was the first career homer for rookie first baseman Domingo Martínez and Steve and I wondered if he'd one day hit 50 in a season. Our hopes for him were sky high.

We won that day 13-0 over the Rangers and Domingo Martínez finished the day 2 for 2. We were certain he'd get more playing time in 1993 and eventually replace John Olerud as our everyday first baseman. After all, he has so much power, and Steve and I agreed, he was going to be a star.

Domingo Martínez played exactly 15 major league games during his career, hitting a grand total of 2 career homeruns. Sometimes, I'm wrong. This time, I was very wrong.

Windsor Road House From Rob Ford Photo Linked to Rinse's Comment

The Comment From Rinse about Rob Ford's Crack UseAs we've discussed, this comment left by Rinse on March 26 included details about Rob Ford's use of crack cocaine:

Here's the thing: Rob Ford DOES use crack cocaine. A friend of mine, her mother is a serious drug addict. Rob Ford regularly goes over to her house to smoke crack.

The problem is this: The daughter wants to expose Rob Ford's drug abuse, but her oldschool Italian grandmother won't allow her to "bring shame" upon the family, long story short. So basically the daughter has become complicit with the entire thing instead of doing the right thing. Shame on you Jasmin.

According to this Globe and Mail article, information about the house Rob Ford was photographed in front of with Anthony Smith gives credence to Rinse's comments.

The house on Windsor Road is officially owned by an elderly couple. The neighbours believe the husband died in the past few years and say that the primary residents of the home are the grownup children, believed to be in their 40s.

A Redditor did a little digging and discovered the following:

15 Windsor Rd is listed to "E Basso" in the phonebook. I found an obituary that says "Elio Basso" passed away on November 6, 2009, with funeral service at a chapel at Rexdale & Kipling. The obituary lists Jasmine as his granddaughter. "Jasmin" is the name mentioned at torontomike.com/2013/03/the_problem_with_rob_ford_and.html#comment-234172

Here's the Canada411 listing for E Basso at 15 Windsor Road, and here's the obituary for Elio Basso that mentions Jasmine.

Holy shit. Rinse wasn't kidding.

Update: The Star story confirming the details is here.

2014 Chevrolet Impala Test Drive Review

Test Driving a 2014 Chevrolet ImpalaI was invited to participate in the Chevrolet Impala Drive Event this week. I've already written about the golf and the whiskey tasting, and I'll soon write about my tour of the GM plant in Oshawa, but this entry is about the 2014 Chevrolet Impala we drove from Oshawa to Fenelon Falls and back.

2013-06-04 08.37.07

When I think Impala, I think cop car. Now that I've spent some time with the new Impala, I think it's a sexier version of the new Ford Taurus.

2013-06-03 13.28.08

It looks great, drives silently and wonderfully and has the roomiest trunk I've ever seen. I could fit at least three hockey bags in here.

2013-06-03 10.50.19

The standard Impala's MSRP is $28,445. The version I drove had MyLink pairing my smart phone and making it easy to surf media and the navigation system with natural voice commands. Elvis and I listened to a lot of Lithium 34 on XM.

Malt Whiskey Tasting: Elixir, Ben Nevis and Glen KeithI spent the last two days on a retreat of sorts with Chevrolet as they showed off their new Impala. I'll write about the Impala later, but right now I want to write about the malt whiskey tasting.

I'm not much of a drinker. I enjoy a bottle of Heineken (or two) during a hockey game, but that's about it. I don't even keep malt whiskey in the house, so when Chevrolet brought in Ed Patrick from the International Order of Companions of The Quatch, Canada's premier malt whisky society, I knew I was going to learn something new.

Ed's extremely passionate about malt whiskey, and held my hand through the tasting of three single malts: Elixir, Ben Nevis and Glen Keith.

By the third glass, my eyes were watering and my throat was burning. I have no idea how you acquire a taste for whiskey, but until I do, I'm sticking with my Heineken.

My Golf Game with Elvis

Ending My Monster Golf DroughtI mentioned that I hadn't golfed since lifetime gym over twenty years ago. Yesterday, on a blustery day in Fenelon Falls, I played the nine hole course at Eganridge Inn and Spa overlooking beautiful Sturgeon Lake with my buddy Elvis, courtesy of Chevrolet.

Things got off to a rocky start when I thought I needed to rent left-handed clubs but was assured by the golf pro that I was likely right-handed. I shoot left-handed in hockey, but bat right-handed in baseball, and I'm honestly not sure which feels more natural with my golf swing.

With my right-handed clubs, I did my very best. Golf is a humbling game, and although I won handedly, I'm sure you'll have a good laugh at my score of 56.

Jean Stapleton, Dead at 90

In MemoriumJean Stapleton was 90. She was best known for her portrayal of Edith Bunker, the long-suffering, yet devoted wife of Archie Bunker and mother of Gloria Stivic, on the 1970s situation comedy All in the Family.

Ending My Monster Golf Drought

Ending My Monster Golf DroughtI've only golfed once in my life. It was in grade 12 when my lifetime gym class shot nine holes. That was awhile ago, and I never felt the urge to golf again.

I'm scheduled to end this monster drought on Monday when elvis and I are set to play the course at Eganridge Inn and Spa overlooking beautiful Sturgeon Lake. I've got Chevrolet to thank for this amazing pre-wedding treat.

It's been over twenty years. I might be a little rusty.
