Just Clinch Already Open Mike

Open MikeThe Leafs' first playoff appearance in nine years is all but certain, but it would be nice if we could go ahead and clinch already. This English and History major is tired of doing all that math.

What's on your mind?

My question is whether this is going to be considered home-grown terrorism or not.

The brothers were born in Chechnya and lived in Kazakhstan but have lived in the US for 12 years.

I suspect America will label them Russian Muslims but 12 years is a long time. I feel like this is home grown.

Hopefully the 2nd suspect is captured alive. If they've planted bombs anywhere else, let's find out where before someone else gets hurt.

Argie will be happy they're Muslim, but disappointed they're white.

I'm a Canadian ex-pat of a little over 4 years now. I still keep in touch with the news back home though - including the sports.

Right now that consists of watching games when they play my new local teams and reading the news the following day to check results when they don't.

Because of the new culture I live in, sports scores for Toronto teams have to be sought out rather than being available on TV, radio, etc. I'm fine with checking nhl and mbl's scores sites each morning - but I have to admit it gets a little tiresome when all of my other news reaches me via RSS.

Is anyone aware of an RSS feed that posts the _final_ scores for the Leafs and the Jays (I don't need updates all evening), so that if I'm not able to watch a game locally I can see the results first thing the following morning with all my other news - rather than having to seek the scores out individually later on?

For the Jays, try: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/tor/rss.xml

For the Leafs, try: http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/tor/rss.xml

Where are you living now?

No Dope,

You're a moron to imply I'm a racist. I'm not happy about anything - only not surprised that they're muslim. As for being white, most terrorists are white (as people from the middle east are considered white).

Its fair to note most serial killers and rapists are also white so there's nothing for white people to feel superior about.

Oh and can someone please tell that wanker Justin Trudeau that the "root cause" is that they're muslim? Nuff said.

April 19, 2013 @ 10:05 AM

What ever happened to "Orange" bathroom cleaner(s)? The stuff worked great and I loved the scent. I can't tolerate ammonia bathroom cleaners especially in the confines of a glass enclosed shower stall.
The only place that sells something similar is the dollar store but like most cleaners sold there it's terrible containing mostly water and orange food colouring.

Get your head out of your ass - he could have been born in the US but it doesn't hide the fact he was influenced by that "religion of peace". Just like those 4 "home-grown" terrorists from London ON who went off to Algeria to kill that bad "infidels". Do you follow the news at all?

Thanks for the links, I'll get them added to my feed right away.

We now live in south central PA, around the Chambersburg area. You won't find a bigger change from the city than rural Pennsylvania, but the job opportunity was very good - and my wife has always wanted to be a 'farmer'.

I try to get my city fixes from DC, Baltimore and Philly - although Baltimore is actually about the population size of Mississauga...

@ Mike - seriously...can we just clinch it already...

@ Argie - No, we've established that you aren't racist, just prejudiced.

However, do we know that being Muslim had anything to do with it. With them being Chechnian (did i spell that right?) it could just as easily be a political message since the US are an ally of the Russian gov't.

By your logic, all Irish Catholics must be suspected of terrorism because the IRA are made up of Irish Catholics.

April 19, 2013 @ 10:43 AM

The fact is they are Muslim.

April 19, 2013 @ 10:44 AM

@ Speyside - What is your religion and cultural background?? Cause if you're anything other than a Buddhist, I'm willing to bet I could find some examples of "terrorism" committed by your fore bearers as well..

I'm Irish Catholic...should I be put on a watch list?

April 19, 2013 @ 10:47 AM

Blind Dave

Yup, the Americans are saying they're from Chehenya, and the Chechens are saying they were just kids then and have been gone too long.

My beef (other than the terrorism) is the people who piss over the country that gives them freedom and a new lease on life.

Do Chechen Muslims get their 72 virgins too?

April 19, 2013 @ 10:51 AM

I don't suspect all muslims are terrorists - where the hell have I ever written that? However, when there is a terrorist attack, the chances are pretty good (like 99 out of 100) that they'll be muslim. Do you understand that logic?

As for Irish Catholics, your brothers aren't bombing much around the world - in fact not much at all these days. Romans and Vikings were also pretty bad in their day, but we don't look at Italians and Scandinavians as terrorists do we? Maybe if we could go a few days or weeks without an islamist attack, I might cut them some slack.

April 19, 2013 @ 10:59 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie- No, you're right, my "brothers" don't do much bombing these days. Instead they sell bombs and guns to the new breed of terrorist, and revel in the carnage.....that's much better.

Oh, and since we're on the subject of Italians, no, we don't tend to call them terrorists, we call them gangsters. If you're Italian and you murder a bunch of rival criminals, it's called gangland violence. If two Muslim groups went at it, you'd call them both terrorists and call it a day.

April 19, 2013 @ 11:06 AM

@Mississauga Phil:
Not that it's any of your business what my religion is but for the sake of this post I don't have a religion.
But we are talking about events that have happened in the last 30 or so years (terrorism) and the one link is irrefutable."Muslim".
And your reference to Irish terrorism doesn't hold water .

April 19, 2013 @ 11:08 AM

What's your motivation for being politcally correct? Do you get soem kind of reward?

The topic of the day is terrorism. It is not unreasonable for a person to assume that recent terrorist attack was likely comitted by a muslim. Like the Pittsburgh Penguins, they're the odds on favour to win. Do you not agree?

BTW, I love the Irish. The people, the culture and their courage to stand up to the Brits like my ancestors.

April 19, 2013 @ 11:11 AM

Since tomorrow is 4/20 (or 20/4 for those of us who prefer the sane SI system), now would be a good time to listen to this :

... and go to the April 04th episode. CBC's Jian talks to Mark Kleiman, the newly-appointed head of Washington State's pot legalization efforts.
It is an interesting discussion that focuses on the next step in legalization of cannabis. It is easy to want legalization, but much much harder to administer that legalization.

I for one, don't care about the stuff, but those that do should take some time to rationally think about what legalization would mean.

April 19, 2013 @ 11:14 AM

Justin Trudeau revealed just how naive and/or inexperienced he really by making that "root cause" comment. What's even more shocking are the amount of his "fans" that are lapping that statement up as if it was the most profound thing ever uttered.

Tell me, if (emphasis on IF) this Boston thing turns out to be another act of radical, religious extremism, how will determining that root cause help us? Placate them? Ban them from the US? Bomb them? That was just the type of meaningless lip-service I expect from this twerp.

April 19, 2013 @ 11:22 AM

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - No reward, but I have family members that converted to Muslim, and in my life I have worked with many more, and the people in their community are as sickened, if not more, than you are by this stuff.

What about those people?? What about the people who just want to live their lives, don't care if you say Merry Christmas to them. The people who just want to work and raise their families.

Taking people like Al-Quida as an accurate description of most Muslims, is like taking the Grand Dragon of the KKK as a typical example of a North American Christian...every culture has nutbags and extremists.

@ Speyside - please explain to me how my Irish argument doesn't hold water??

April 19, 2013 @ 11:24 AM

@ Corey - so right. Trudeau is a douche...but the sad thing is he just might win (God help us all)

April 19, 2013 @ 11:26 AM

Sorry - I have to question your comment too - why would being Irish Catholic mean you would be considered for a watch list?

April 19, 2013 @ 11:31 AM

I do not know what to believe any more in the world of political spin, but I heard on CNN Sat radio this morning that 42 of the 45 Senators who voted against Obama’s Gun background check reform and proposal to ban some semi-automatic military style assault weapons, were paid cash political donations directly from the NRA. They said the total dollars were close to $800k and were paid out in late March and early April of this year.

They also had a guy from the NRA on who claimed Obama was using Newtown victims as “props”.

There is something seriously wrong here…..

April 19, 2013 @ 11:54 AM

Ben Vidal

Can i ask why it's wrong for a politician to want to get to the root cause or want to think or question things? If it turns out it's home grown terrorism, why? How do you stop it. Or if it's foreign grown and they got through loop holes here how?

I just don't see what the problem is with what he said.
It's very easy to shoot from the hip and say shoot them all. When has it ever paid to shoot from the hip and just go all guns blazing?

It's also easy for Harper to comment once Trudeau commented. Yet has anyone taken a look at some of the things Harper said before he became prime minister?

It's also quite funny that the same people that would say give Harper a chance, you hate him because he's right wing are the very same that hate Trudeau for being left wing or being Pierre's son. Hypocrisy at its finest

April 19, 2013 @ 12:05 PM

For chissakes Phil (that's right I said "Christ"), you keep missing the point. Or maybe you're just doing this to bug me.

I have NEVER wrote or even thought all muslims are potential terrorists. Like you I know several muslims who would never carry out terrorists acts but that doesn't eliminate the fact that most if not all terrorists committed in the past 20 years or so are done by muslims. This is my last attempt at this.

Great weather! We'll hit double digits by late next week!!!

April 19, 2013 @ 12:28 PM

4x4 Time

First, let me preface this by saying I am not a fan of either Political party or Party Leader we have in Federal and Provincial government. I am looking for a Party with leadership skills to get things done that are right for the country/province/municipality as a whole and be respectful of taxpayer’s money. I know, a pipe dream, so each election I choose who I think is the best of all evils. Seldom am I right.

But my question is, are the Conservative attack ads on Trudeau a wise strategy, or will they just succeed in pissing off Canadians? I realize the Conservatives and NDP should be worried about his brand appeal with younger voters. But would a better strategy be to simply treat him like the leader of the third party and simply ignore him. Wait until his policies are presented then attack those.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but I think these types of ads will only secure the public’s general cynicism toward the political system and distrust of politicians. In the end, the citizens lose as corporate and lobby groups buy the vote for power. Sad really..

I have something to say...

The NHL is trying to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

The outdoor classic was an event. New Year's Day, lots of hype... it was special.

Now they're going to have 6 of them, totally de-valuing them and making them much less special. It makes little sense to me.

April 19, 2013 @ 1:32 PM

It's a cash grab from the head office plain and simple. They make way more money off an outdoor game than they do off a regular broadcast....gotta make up the money the owners lost from the self imposed lockout somehow.

For me, this greatly tarnishes the planned Leafs/Red Wings game planned for January......

Trudeau's comments were stupid because they were meaningless. He was obviously parroting what has been said lately in regards to the Sandy Hook shootings; that the root cause of mass shootings needs to be identified. In the Sandy Hook case, that's an entirely reasonable statement, because mental illness is the root cause, and more can be done sooner to identify and treat mental illness. That's an actionable step in solving the problem. Terrorists act as an organized group to achieve ideological goals. Understanding their motivations isn't going to help anyone prevent this kind of violence. They can't be reasoned with, or treated medically or financially. There isn't a solution to fundamental extremism.

People like to pick on Justin Trudeau... But let us look at
some famous quotes by our PM.

"This country will not go into recession next year and will lead the G7 countries."
- Prime Minister Stephen Harper (Oct. 2010)

WRONG! In fact anyone with half a brain at the time could see we were heading into a recession.. Yet out PM and fiance minister were DEAD WRONG!

His record on the economy, budget and foreign policy is a joke with contradictions every step of the way.

Really if the Liberals or NDP wanted for stoop down and start attack ad's, they would have plenty of material to work with.

Attack ad's are now working against Harper and the conservatives.

People want a leader with a vision - that maybe why Justin's popularity is sky rocketing - even with people that were conservatives supporters in the past.

April 19, 2013 @ 3:57 PM

@Mr. Fasination - You know, I see that quote spattered around liberal-minded blogs all over the net, but I haven't seen it in any actual accredited news sites. I wonder if it's because Harper didn't say it, or it's been mangled out of context. Please provide a credible source next time and you'll be taken seriously.
Secondly, Canada did, and continues to this day to lead the G7. In fact we're the only country in the G7 with a top credit rating thanks to the federal budget. I wonder how Justin would top that.

April 19, 2013 @ 4:11 PM

Your kidding right??

April 19, 2013 @ 4:14 PM

Well, my Habs were in a slump, but they won last night so that's great. I hope the Leafs don't clinch. I hate the Leafs. My Habs are going to win the cup. You'll see.

As for politicians, nothing like George Smitherman. I hope he will run somewhere so I can vote for him again.

Well, I hope we don't get a crap summer. I want a sunny summer so I can play lots of tennis and play baseball again hoping I'll like baseball more.

April 19, 2013 @ 4:34 PM

@Mike - Ok, and as I expected, with a big IF that never accompanies the quote,""We have every reason to believe Canada will stay out of recession if Canada doesn't start raising taxes and spending itself into deficit." I should remind you that it was the Libs and NDP that rejected the first budget tabled because it lacked stimulus spending - spending which ultimately put us in a deficit.

Elvis at 6:33 p.m.,
Yawn. Another one of your near empty follow-up naggings against me.

Mr. Fascination at 15:57 p.m. bought up the general G7 political / fiscal issue and Corey at 16:11 p.m. responded. Those are clock time references of their comments, btw.
Earlier I commented, at 15:11 p.m., of the now-captured bombing and MIT cop killing suspect's own recent gov't scholarship and his being a 'refugee status' immigrant, of an apparent financially comfortable family.
As my own comment at 17:35 p.m., after Corey's 16:11 p.m., I noted that Cdn. Conservatives and also as implied with their own cronies haven't been very much more fiscally responsible than their political opponents. In doing so, I used a 2010 Ont. University scholarship offer given out to a Cdn. killer.

April 19, 2013 @ 9:32 PM

What's "clock time"?

April 19, 2013 @ 11:36 PM

@CQ - I have no idea what this means: "Another one of your near empty follow-up naggings against me."

My original question was genuine - I'm having difficulty connecting the dots of what you're trying to say (again) so I was asking for clarification. My question was neither empty or nagging.

April 20, 2013 @ 12:57 AM

Yes, your question to me, your same question over and over and over, is empty and nagging! Every time.

A clock is an instrument for measuring time. I used the phrase "clock time" as an off-hand direction to the exact comment(s) my response at 17:35 continued, shortly after, from within this thread.

As I said at 21:32 (or 9:32 p.m. depending on the preview comment page listings), "Yawn." This is because I knew elvis's empty and nagging question reply was going to follow my comment. It almost always does. I still haven't a clue what his issue is with my commenting. I don't care about it either. He even cripes right after me if or when I comment at a 'passings' entry as he did when Frank Bank recently died.

Before you ask, Corey - I used the word 'passings' in the preceding sentence of this comment as indicating when someone dies. Are you tired of this? I'm tired of this effort to participate at this blog's commenting thread too.

April 20, 2013 @ 2:05 AM

Another bad loss....Can we stop saying it is still early?? The Jays look horrible. A disjointed group of individuals and small groups that don't act like or resemble a team. The Red Sox on the other hand have cohesion and look so much better, and I hate the Red Sox.

April 20, 2013 @ 7:37 AM

@CQ - No wonder you're tired. It must take considerable effort to make your comments as incomprehensible as they are.

Do you think this was a well written sentence: "...an off-hand direction to the exact comment(s) my response at 17:35 continued, shortly after, from within this thread."
No one wants to have to puzzle over your comments to suss out whatever it is you're trying to say. Do you know the KISS acronym? Practice it.

April 20, 2013 @ 8:09 AM

The Leafs won't clinch. My Habs are cup contenders and they will win the cup. So the Jays are losing too much. I don't care about the Jays or the Redsox for that matter. I really don't care for any baseball team, but if I had to pick one, it would be the diamondbacks because they're from Arizona and I love Arizona, but baseball is such a long and boring game. Playing it, at least I'm doing something.

Let me get this straight, you are critical of Trudeau because he wants information before running into things? Of course the alternative is to vote for a war in Iraq, even though there no connection, they are brown people so it's okay. of course it's not racist.

The people speaking out most against that comments is a desperate political party that had to resort to taking A CHARITY EVENT for an attack ad and a bunch of RW lap dogs in the media who cheer Harpo every move. You know who believes in root causes, EVERY expert in the field.

It does make a difference that these guys did it because of religion, or if it's due to geo political reasons, or it could be a couple of losers who couldn't get a job and lashes out that way. It's obviously wrong for whatever reason, but it's imporant to know the cause.

It was hilarious, talk host Mike Bullard mocked Trudeau, but late on Fri show he said "Hope they catch this guy alive so we know why they did this" there was this awkward pause, you can tell BULLard just caught his own words and embarassed himself as he just agreed with Trudeau. He then said i don't mean "root cause" Smooth backpeddle BULLard, wanting to know why he did it is the definition of "root cause"

Obviously we need to know WHY these dirtbags did it. His "root cause" comment was just another buzzword any person of little credibility would use when they the only thing they know is to tow the company/liberal line.

What your boy Justin was implying was that somehow there's an explanation as to what motivated them (i.e. maybe we can do things differently so that no one will hate us..etc).

We dont need weak empty suits like him running the country. I'm not a fan of Harper either but at least he has enough brains not to make a moronic comment like that.

April 20, 2013 @ 3:47 PM

Would you be willing to publicly stand behind your comments Argie?

April 20, 2013 @ 4:41 PM

And the Jays lose again and Wilner keeps defending them and saying it's still early.

They look unprepared and just awful. And the Red Sox and Yankees keep winning.

I think Gibbons is the problem.

For the Lulz

While you're all in the Open Mike waiting room, please enjoy Stephen Harper’s search for the root causes of terrorism

April 20, 2013 @ 5:34 PM

That would be a no, PSA. I'm not keen on death threats or lawsuits. Anyway, thanks for asking.

April 20, 2013 @ 6:55 PM

My Habs are losing 2 to 0 after one period. This is not good at all. They better pull things together. Now is not a good time to be losing. I sure don't want the Leafs to clinch, that's for sure. Let's just hope we can get George Smitherman back and then he would win over Trudeau and Harper. That would be good.

April 20, 2013 @ 8:13 PM

Doug Gilmour- No f'ing tablet. Did they leave that in on purpose?

I hear "no fucking tablet" every time.

So Argie, you're saying you have a problem attaching your opinions to your own name? We need some clarification on this issue.

By the way Argie, how did you choose that name for your online endeavors?

April 20, 2013 @ 9:58 PM

The Leafs did clinch. This sucks. I hate the leafs. I really really do. My Habs better come out of their slump. Now the Leafs clinched. It really sucks. grocery Gateway sucks as well. I kept trying to put an order in, and I kept getting stupid error messages. It took all day just to resolve some issues. Their customer service sucks. They put you on hold for a long time with this boring hold music. It's the same music all the time. I hate being put on hold. Primus never puts people on hold. Well, Primus is good in the first place so people don't need to call them all the time.

Cheryl, have you tried other services?

I work at home, so most definitely!

April 21, 2013 @ 10:46 AM

@ Cheryl, The Hab's goalie stinks. I hope they meet the leafs in the playoffs because if they do they are going down.@ Argie, I agree with eveything you said.......

I love it when our Prime Minister talks out of both sides of his mouth. What a hypocrite.

for all of you who wanted to take it to Justin for what he said....

April 22, 2013 @ 10:37 AM

I haven't heard of Realfood toronto Before. Are they any good?

Anyway, Grocery Gateway wants me to call them every time I put an order in. It's rare I get a customer service person right away. They put me on hold and there is this same old boring piece of music to listen to.

don't say the Habs goalie stinks. He doesn't stink, not Carey Price. He's in a slump though at the wrong time. I hate the Leafs. I'm telling you if they win the cup, I'm digging a hole and hiding in the hole for a long time.

What I want to know is what Toronto Mike thinks about the recent Boston Bombings and todays RCMP arrests of terrorists and the apparent link to the Muslim faith. Mike has a lot to say about Christianity but I never read anything about the Muslim faith.

I've been clear about this. I'm against all religion...

But I write about Catholicism because that's the one I know. That's the one I was born into and raised with.

April 22, 2013 @ 4:05 PM

I know much more about Cat holism than I do islam but there's no denying it, islam seems to attract or influences those who are either pre-disposed to kill or those who become killers. When will you acknowledge this?

Does it have to happen here in Toronto before you realize what these people will do? Since the Boston bombings there have been numerous bombings around the world - committed by those warm and fuzzy friends of yours. And no, its not by Amish or Methodists

You've never played for the Leafs or for the Jays but you write about them. What gives?

But notice I focus on one per category:

MLB: Blue Jays
NHL: Leafs
NBA: Raptors
Italian Restaurants: Palma Pasta
Religion: Catholicism

In that case, makes perfect sense to me.

@Ben Vidal, sir you are mentally challenged. The spin doctors of Mcleans have you hook , line and sinker. I hope for your sake that they do not enter the real estate field. If they do, you are bound to end up with either swampland or a deed to property in space.

April 23, 2013 @ 10:01 AM

Ben Vidal

@Dave: I don't need to buy into anything. There a difference between fact and buying into a lie. Oh I forgot you supposedly know better because you are in venture capitalism.... Although I don't think the guy who gets people their coffee is really in venture capitalism.

What happened to your supposed high road? You tell Phil off for getting angry and hurling insults, but every single time you post you insult someone. Must be nice being a hypocrite.

I'm sure you would also try and argue that the guy who debunked the success of austerity measures is a moron. Even though the "respected" men who came up with the data, said they never reviewed it and there was incorrect data used.

I take my coffee black. So hurry up.
