What's on your mind?
113 Responses to "It's March Open Mike"Dave Williams The NDP/Bloq marriage is starting to crumble. Thankfully Stephen Harper has governed over and above of what he was elected for. Toronto Mike @Declan Yes, I'm still in Frankfurt. I hope you kids are behaving yourselves! Toronto Mike The last time I went to Germany for a week during the NHL season the Leafs went undefeated. I think they went 4-0, and quickly went into a tailspin when I returned home. I was a little relieved to see we lost to the Habs the other day. Bill Carroll is tanking on 640 and can't get much right these days. Plus he sounds like he's doing his show from inside his washroom. Dave Williams @Jodie, please explain, I feel that Bill Carroll is doing a great job. I don't mind Carroll - he's certainly more enjoyable than that so-called conservative John Tory. As for 590, McCown is two years away from dementia judging by his frequent brain farts and TSN is still trying - which is me being kind. Mississauga Phil @ Argie - It's sad too, cause I used to love McCowan, but you're right, he's slipping. TSN 1050 was interesting as a novelty for about the 1st 5 min... Mississauga Phil @ Kevin - " I musht varn you Meester Burnz, Ve Chermans are not all smiles und Sunshine" "Oh no Smithers!! The Germans are Mad at me.... Save me from the Germans Smithers" ...one of my favorite classic Simpsons episodes. Dave Williams @Argie, people revert to profanity when they cannot match wit. Mississauga Phil is a prime example of that. I thought I was the only one who thought McCowan was slipping. I have noticed recently that he also goes on about insignificant and boring sports topics that no-one is interested in. If it weren't for some good co-hosts (and I don't include Cox in this) and his history...I think his show could be in trouble. Too bad TSN can't seem to get it together. Toronto Mike Simpsons references are always welcome here. As is Argie. @Dave Williams I think the battle with @Mississauga Phil has run its course. I declare peace on these pages. It's a balmy 4 degrees here in Frankfurt. I might wear shorts tonight. Derrick Can we all just agree this is the right way to deal with a tailgater. http://www.wheels.ca/news/pink-tied-driver-deals-with-tailgater-with-intimidating-staredown/ And Officer Dameian Muirhead does not deserved to be charged with misconduct? Dave Williams @Mike, I will ease up on Phil. As a pacifist that is what I need to do. I am so geeked about the Jays this year that I'm actually going to watch the World Baseball Classic to get my fix of jays players(R.A Dickey especially) and root root root for Team Canada. Nigel Trousershrapnel @Derrick Derrick Mr. Trousershrapnel, I would normally agree with you, but in this case the drivers were on an on ramp to a highway. How does one "get the fuck out of the way" on an on ramp? That's just being a jerk and an asshole. Nigel Trousershrapnel @ Derrick, Derrick Then the individual who was doing the tailgating has an opportunity to pass the person in front him/her in only seconds and therefore does not need to be tailgating. MrFascination I Called It On Bill Carroll.. Same As Humble And Fred On CFRB... Just Awful... Sounds Like A Bunch of Washed Up Radio Guys Trying To ReCapture Their Hay Day. 4x4 Time Saw Lake Side Dive last night at The Horeshoe, one of the best live shows I have seen in a while. Check them out online. Ben Vidal You know what's despicable, other than the farce that is the Catholic Church and it mattering who becomes the next pope? Our current federal government and it's muzzling of our national scientists. Not just that, but also attempting to muzzle international scientists at the same time. So if I'm to get this straight our scientists’ do their thing and report back with their findings and let’s say they find that Saskatchewan has a massive fault line and is in imminent danger of an earthquake. They have to first report this to our federal government that isn't made up of a single scientist. Then the conservatives get to decide whether or not the people of this country who pay taxes towards having these scientists funded get to learn of these findings? Does anyone find this insulting to each and every one of us Canadians? Is this not an abuse of power? Isn't this part of why Canada dropped so significantly in the freedom of information ranking by country? @ Dave: You sir are not a pacifist. You are an antagonist hiding behind a pacifist moniker. A pacifist does not attempt to instigate a situation and then hide behind the guise of peace and love. A weasel perhaps a pacifist I would no. I’m sure you were that annoying kid at school that would bug people that were bigger than yourself and when they gave you a good beating go and cry to your parents and the teacher that you didn’t do anything they just beat you up. At least Argie has the balls to admit the fact he enjoys riling people up and being slightly bigoted towards nearly every type of minority. Drop the act no one cares Dave. If you want a good restaurant use Yelp or go back to Frank D’Angelo’s place. Blind Dave I have taken up Mike's quest from last year to lose weight. My "right" weight is probably around 170 lb, give or take, and I am 5'9" (almost). I was 180 lb a couple of years ago, and then two weeks ago at my physical I clocked in at 198 lb! Yeah, I do look a bit pregnant, but have an average-sized body everywhere else. My day would be considered light activity, and I do try to walk to/from work every day, which would be about 35 minutes round trip. My wife and I have also taken to walking for 30 minutes in the evening, and when the snow and ice melt, we'll hit the track at the local school. I can't run much, as I have a soft head from brain surgery six years ago, but I can do sprints. So I figured walk a lap, sprint the straightaway, walk a lap.... and so on. I've also cut down on my portions, and ditched the goodies except for our Saturday night couch-fest (though I take it more carefully now). I normally stay away from fatty foods anyway, so really it's just the portion size and mid-week snacks that needed changing. I started some ab exercises in my basement, and am also looking into yoga. Riding a bike is a wee bit dangerous for me. My wife, though she still has a nice shape, adamantly refuses to be seen in a swimsuit, so I can't convince her to try that. I've been at it for two weeks and have yet to drop a pound, even though I am taking Mike's advice and charting calories, with a few small meals every day. Perhaps my body metabolism is still adjusting. I would like to start seeing some results soon! Dave Williams Ben, why all of the hostility towards organized religion and our government and myself. I feel a sense of pride that you hold me in such high regard, but do you realize that you will longer if you are not so hostile? Ben, Firstly I don't enjoy riling people up for kicks. I give my honest opinion - usually with an attempt of humour thrown in. In fact, I get annoyed that there are so many people who are over sensitive. I would rather people simply refute what I have to say than just call me a douchebag or tell me to eff-off. And no, I'm not implying you're one of those wanks. Which brings me to the Catholic bashing. You have just proved what I've been saying all along - there is a huge double standard among the clueless masses who readily attack the Church but easily get bent out of shape when someone makes an unpopular remark about the sacred group of 4. Ironically, you used the word "bigoted" which isn't as bad as being called a racist by people who obviously have no idea what the word means. Hell, I should just go ahead and call you a racist for bashing the RC Church except I know better - you're just being bigoted. I wont defend Dave as I'm sure he can go a pretty good job on you. But seriously Ben, I believe in free speech (even if I don't agree with your opinions) so I'm not going to go crying to Mike to have you blocked like some others have to me. Mississauga Phil ...and that was an intentional double post...thought we might need 2 verses of it to cut throught the tension Hey Phil, I loved the intended double post. You know me I'm all about peace, love and dancing barefoot in the field to hippie music. Mississauga Phil @ Arige - Oh yeah... hippie...thats you in a nutshell. Seriously though, just for the record, I apologized for implying you were racist a while back. You are right that bigoted would be a more apt word to use...and I for one have never asked Mike to block anyone. I agree on the free speech part, even though you and I rarely agree, I'll have a healthy debate with you on any topic under the sun....however, i think you would have to admit that from time to time, you do say inflamitory things to get a rise out of people. Thats not a bash, just how I see it. I would site one of the Open Mike's a few weeks ago when you posted something to the effect of "how bout I post my views on gay marriage and we''ll get the comment count the highest it's ever been" - not a direct quote but i think that was the gist of it. Regardless, I'll return to the words I try to live by: My Choice is what I choose to do If anyone still believes there's no difference between religion, just check this out: And no, this is not to rile anyone up. Just the facts. Dave Williams @Phil; I will try to be more civil. Mississauga Phil @ Argie - No doubt there are some truly fucked up people in the muslim community. My only issue is your tendancy to paint all members of that community witht he same brush. I have known many muslims who are happy to conform to our society and are jsut as sickened as you are by the actions of the extremists. I would have the same issue with someone who tried to imply that ALL catholic preists are pedophiles just because some are.... Phil, I know this going to anger some of the softies out there but a majority of these disgusting priests (which represent about 1% of priests everywhere), were homosexual men preying on teenage boys. The cases of abuse on pre-pubescent boys was minuscule - which I know doesn't make it any better. I'm only trying to present the facts. I realize the truth may hurt some of these said softies. Mississauga Phil @ Dave you are right of course. However, since I don't have any abuse problem, my words stand. Note to anyone new to this argument: I made an offhand comment about a year ago that I hoped that, as an adult, my son (currently 5 years old) and I would be close enough that a beer and a joint around the campfire would't be out of the question. Dave, who seems to think that pot is the devil's plant, has taken every opportunity to take digs at me, imply that I have a chemical substance abuse problem (despite the fact that I have never touched any checmial drug in my life) that I am an unfit parent, that pot caused the crazy man who shot up a school before chistmas to do what he did....basically, Dave thinks the movie "Reefer Madness" is a docuimentary as opposed to a piece of propaganda...and so on and so on Dave - no bullying or anything else of that naure, I just really have nothing to say to you. Once more with feeling, please refrain from posting to me or about me, you are a non entity in my world. Missisauga Phil @ Argie - yes, but as opposed to admitting that there was a problem and dealing with it, the vatican just shuffles the offending priest off to a church far far away and sweep it under the rug. I was an alter boy as a child and our priest, Fr. Wayne, was the best!! He was a freindly and welcoming man, and a fixture in our community. I would be massivly offended to hear someone lump him in with Father Bad-Touch...all I ask is that you give the non-militant memebers of the muslim community the same courtesy..not all muslims want to kill us... Dave Williams @Phil, I was not referencing you in self abuse, I was merely stating that people who abuse themselves eg smoking, feel they are only hurting themselves, but the truth is we all pay for their sins. 4x4 Time As a society, we are all guilty to some degree of painting certain groups of people with the same brush..For example, with the ridiculous conduct and ludicrous excuses of a couple of non elected Canadian Senators, you may feel all Senators in Canada are trough feeding pigs...Wait, bad example. Nigel Trousershrapnel @ Derrick, The asshole allows himself to enjoy special advantages and does so systematically; Derrick Well said. @Dave, maybe we should make pot legal and tax it in order to pay for the social harm it causes. We could do the same for pollution. Force those who do harm to pay for it. 4x4, We should abolish the Senate. And no not because of what's happened recently but in general its a complete waste of taxpayers' money. Nigel, There's no such thing as karma. It would nice of there was but it doesn't exist. Dave, I think the penalties for any kind of abuse should be much more severe than what currently exists. Phil, As I've stated this many times before, I don't think all muslims are terrorists. MIke, I almost forgot - I saw Sliver linings Playbook. Excellent movie with great performances by the main cast. What is the matter with you? 4x4 Time Argie - Agree on the Senate..Quick google search shows 105 Senators, all in annual operating budget (that they tell us) is $90 Million...Not counting pensions etc. I am sure. Time to get rid of these oxygen thieves... Cheryl That was great about my Habs beating the Leafs. That's wonderful. I got some more junk mail from Bell though. they have to stop. They want me back, but they're not getting me back. Primus is tons better. Oh well, we still have winter, but my local skating rink closed at Rosedale Park. Would be nice to have more skating. It should be open at least until the end of March. 4x4 Time For the Vinyl fans in Mikes World..A couple of re-mastered releases I took for a spin this week- Nigel Trousershrapnel @ Argie, Like I said, karma has a special plan for you. 4x4 Time I always wondered what "Good Karma to you" meant....Now I am worried, should I be? Dave Williams @Derek, by legalizing pot, it opens doors that we as a civil country do not need open. We should increase the penalties on all banned substances. Guys, these Open Mikes are really starting to suck. I sometimes like to get into it, but really the same drivel between Phil and Dave, religion, whether pot should be legalized, blah, blah. Stale. If Cheryl mentions her Habs I might just lose it. Dave Williams @Corey; I am going to make a concentrated effort to diffuse the negative back and forth with Phil. We may not agree on many issues, but Phil can and does debate his side of the equation very well. Rick C in Oakville Not sure if Rob Ford's soliciting for more donations on behalf of his charity again is sticking a finger in the eyes of his foes, but can't he take his near brush with political death and maybe put some of these things on the back burner or at least in a 3 rd party's hands to improve the optics? 4x4 Time Do the Liberals REALLY think they can be taking seriously with Justin Trudeau?...or any of the other leadership candidates? Rick C in Oakville @4x4, even the provincial Liberals are giving it a try with Kathleen Wynne, must be in their DNA. Dave Williams The exact problem for the Liberal party is that they do not ever seem interested in protecting the tax payer dollar. If Justin is anything like his father, we are doomed if he becomes PM. Mississauga Phil @Corey- Agreed. On another note; - was having a debate with a friend of mine. She and I are both excited about the prospect of Justin Trudeau winning the Federal Liberal Part vote. She is because she thinks he'd make a great prime minister, I'm excited because I know if he's the one running for PM, Harper has nothing to worry about. Thoughts? @Nigel Trousershrapnel Anonymous I don't think Harper is a great PM. The man has done some foolish and irresponsible things. However, he was smart enough to see the US crash and took steps to sheild us from it as much as possible. Like him or hate him, things could have been a lot worse. I'm not loyal to any one party. I vote for whomever I think is going to run the country best. Right now the liberals are in shambles, that party needs a reboot almost as bad as the US Repiblicans. The NDP lost what credibility it had when Layton died. While I redpect his desire to keep it private, he made no provisions for his successor, so the jackals are now at eachother. I support Harper as the best option, not because I share his ideals. @Dave Williams what does it matter if Mississauga Phil smokes pot with his kid? It is strange but it could be worse. 4x4 Time You know, I have not chimed in on the 'pot" debate, because, in my life it is not relevant...My son is a touring musician. Yes, I have smoked a joint with him and shared a beer or Jack...Does not matter to me, I love him just the same...Wherever he is he calls on dates that are important to our family...Works for me. The guy who asked his fans to send him Canadian Tire money to fiance his latest CD has reached his goal. Corin Raymond has raised over $7300 in Canadian Tire money for his album "Paper Nickels". Way to go!! You can find more information on his site here.... http://www.dontspendithoney.com/
Dave Williams What I cannot understand about Laytons saga is that he knew he was dying and he could not gather his party together before the election, express his thoughts to his allies within the party to select or even groom a successor for him. I've come up with a personal theory about Ford. I think his actions have been orchestrated by the Conservatives. Toronto needed some very hardline, tough measures to stop the runaway deficits they were incurring under the leftist factions in charge. The Mayor that forced those changes was going to be reviled and hated by the bleeding heart Toronto-proper constituents, and likely be turfed in the next election even if he/she was a moderate. Therefore, put an outrageous loose cannon in the Mayor's seat, get the necessary dirty work done, and then in the next election, any reasonable conservative candidate is going to look attractive by comparison. Nigel Trousershrapnel @Nana, Assholes are legion. They know no geographic boundary. They come in all sizes, all colours, male and female. In the meantime, call your by-law office to complain and keep calling until something is done to your satisfaction. Trousershrapnel out! The guy who asked his fans to send him Canadian Tire money to finance his cd has reached his goal. Corin Raymond has raised over $7300 in Canadian Tire money for his album "Paper Nickels". Way to go!! Humble and Fred had him on their show a few weeks ago. That's how I found out about it.
Rick C in Oakville @ Nigel: Better yet, report their vehicle as a "smoker" to drive clean, forcing them to redo their emmissions test. Had a member of my car club have to go through this after someone put in a bogus report. http://www.ene.gov.on.ca/environment/en/category/drive_clean/STDPROD_075706.html He passed with flying colours, but was inconvenienced and had to pay for the 2nd drive clean test. Rick C in Oakville @ Gary: Sent Corin my wadded up mass of Bonny Scot cash after hearing that episode also. Pure Canadiana that is! Rick C in Oakville Too many pints, meant @ Glen re Corin and @ Gary, the goats are hilarious. Mike need's a 5 minute edit feature on post so we don't look ridiculous with some of our postings, or at least me anyways. Douglas I was invited to the Brampton Battalion vs. Oshawa Generals game tonight at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa. That was the first time I have been there. In short, I have to say that was one of the best hockey games I have attended in many years. The teams were closely matched, and higher in the OHL standings. Lots of hustle, clean play, effort and more. I loved that nobody was afraid to shoot the puck at the net instead of passing the it around for ages, waiting for that "perfect" shot that usually gets blocked by a defender, if it's taken at all. The crowd was great, cheering on the Generals, but also recognizing a few really great efforts by Brampton players. Bonus - I found free on-street parking only a few minutes' walk away from the arena, and the drive home was less than 20 minutes. Southern Ontario folks - if you just cannot stomach further lining the gilded pockets of MLSE and their employees, you might want to consider taking in an OHL game instead. Cheryl Well, my Suns won last night so that's great. Hey, they won three games in a row now so that's wonderful. Hopefully my Habs will win tonight. That will be great. Anyway, Bell keeps sending me junk mail. I wish they wouldn't do that anymore. I hate Bell. I don't know why I stuck with them years ago. Switching to Primus was the best thing I've ever done. Primus never mails anything out. All their stuff is email and their customer service is so good and they're a lot cheaper than Bell is. You get more services that Bell charges extra for each one. Anyway, Primus rules. Everyone should get Primus and then Bell would go out of business and so would rogers. Primus has cellphone service if you want it, but I don't have it because I don't need a cellphone. I mean who really needs that stuff. It's dangerous when you're driving and texting so why get that stuff. I know, I don't drive, but there is nothing that can't wait until I am near my phone or computer to get messages. Nobody needs a Blackberry or IPhone or anything like that. Dave Williams @Cheryl, you obviously like saving money. I do not get why you would elect a person like George Smitherman who literally threw over 1 billion of our dollars away while disliking Rob Ford who has saved you more money than Primus ever would. Cheryl Well, George Smitherman is a nice guy. My trainer voted for him as well so I'm not the only one who did. Anyway, my Habs lost last night. tought OT loss 7 to 6. Well, PK Subban scored a goal. that was great. My coyotes won though in a shootout. That's wonderful. Boon better get back soon - ALL of the reasons have been posted. Where the fuck is @Fake Cheryl when she/he's needed the most? C'mon! i just erased a screed about the wonders of 'cut and paste' Cheryl. Talk about Chinese water torture...trainer...Habs...Primus...Bell...Grocery Getaway...Handy J's for My Trainer Because He's SO Dreamy...Cell phones suck and are useless...no need to read a book or a newpaper because Smithershit will tell my two brain cells what to think...ugh!!!! In my heart of hearts I know that @Cheryl really is some hilarious frat boy who gets high and does the cut and paste thing that drives us crazy. Okay dude, you win. In fact, you SOOOOO win. Podcast notes for Boon - you might be shocked to hear that I am not a CBC devotee! :) ha! That uppity, affected way of speaking drives me batty. Here's torture for you - I had to spend a LOOOOOONG road trip trapped in a car listening to the many (and I mean, many) adventures of Dave and Morley and their two devil spawn, Sam and Stephanie. The episode where this douche is held captive by the blood pressure machine in the drug store was the last straw. Vinyl Cafe? Rot in hell. And you can take the bloody Ron James with ya while you're at it. Mary Walsh, too (go on now Mary and play yer spoons out back now, would ya?!) Big election in Kenya tomorrow - shit should probably hit the fan (if they can find one). Dave Williams @Cheryl, George Smitherman may be a nice guy, but he is a guy that has proven he cannot be trusted managing taxpayers money. I am sure as a person that cares about saving your own personal funds, you will research who you vote for in the future and not waste your vote on someone like Smitherman again. Cheryl My Habs won last night 4 to 3. That's wonderful. My Habs are back in first place. PK Subban got another assist. He's the best. Well, some people happen to like George Smitherman. My trainer really voted for him as well. You bet I'll vote for him again if he ever got back into running. Believe me. If I got the facts correctly....the provincial government is cutting about $3 Billion from the budget. Isn't that about the same amount that was wasted on Ehealth and Ornge? And I can't seem to remember who was in charge of those ministries ...?? Dave Williams @Cheryl, so you want to have more money to spend, but you would vote for a man that has cost you personally in taxes because he "is a good man"? Very confusing. I am sure some people do like George Smitherman as the billion dollas plus that he wasted went to somebody. Speysidephil @Dave Why are you trying to have an intelligent conversation with Cheryl?? Dave Williams @Spey, when I saw her rant on why she is with Primus, I just could not figure out why she wants to save money in one sense, but would clearly throw it away with someone like Smitherman controlling the local public coffers. Her logic would place Rob Ford as the Primus of mayoral candidates. @Liz. I too am convinced "Cheryl" is an elaborate prank. Also you forgot about P.K Subban! He is the best hockey player ever! Toronto Mike @Matt He's reading, just not commenting. I get an email now and then from him... And as for Cheryl, she's the real deal. Irv (but not really) I'm like Rumplestiltskin bitches!!!! Just say my name and I appear Glad you're back, Mike! We're an unruly bunch - as you know. Hope you enjoyed your trip - your photos are wonderful - thanks for sharing them. Cheryl I just told you my trainer likes George Smitherman and he voted for him as well. He is a nice guy. Problem is you just don't know him. Primus really is the best. Try them for yourself. You will be so glad you did. Get rid of Rogers and Bell and get Primus. My Habs are going to win tonight. PK Subban really is a great hockey player. He's the best. Rick C in Oakville Hey Mike just listened to Michelles podcast where she sings, you need to get her and Spencer Glassman to do a duet. For a grade 3 she has a terrific voice!

Are you still in Germany, Mike?
