Had to drive last night and this morning. It honestly wasn't that bad. Visibility was down, but you could see far enough as to not overdrive your headlights. Lots of snow, but it's packing snow. A steady foot and the occasional gas/brake pumping, and traction wasn't a problem. Everything took longer, but was do-able. I was more worried a couple weeks ago when we had the sudden freezing rain storm.

Snow I can deal with and drive carefully through. Ice is ice, and no amount of skill will help when there just is no traction.

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm still shocked and surprised just how fucking awful some drivers are, though. Taking corners too fast and spinning out. Following too close and ramming into other cars. Sliding through intersections because they waited too long to brake. Spinning their tires to try to get traction instead of slowly pumping the gas. Not clearing their windshields.

Heck, why the hell don't people turn on their rear windshield wiper? I got a new car this year, and have a rear wiper for the first time every-- and it's AMAZING! I love it. Water/snow on the rear windshield/ WIPE WIPE NOT ANY MORE HAHAHAHAAHAHAH!

I also have ABS brakes for the first time, and again-- best thing ever. As careful as I am (or think I am), there's been a couple times this year when the ABS kicked in. It's like a built-in driving critique. "I think I'm ok doing 40 on this side street. Stop sign coming up, let's start to brake and--" {massive loud grinding, car shudders to a stop} -- " eep. Okay, 30 it is."

But seriously, how hard and foreign is the concept-- snow == slippery == stay further back from everyone one else and don't drive directly beside them because you'll skid and fishtail. :|

I can understand elementary schools being closed today. I DON'T understand why universities are cancelling classes as well. A 23 year old English major can't make it to a class she paid for?

Although the snow is still falling, the amount of snow in Toronto this morning is pretty underwhelming. My kids are in school... although I think they cancelled school buses.

When I pick them up at 5, I'll borrow my lady friend's car which has winter tires. :)

February 8, 2013 / 09:15

Mississauga Phil

I'm with Lorne. It took me an extra half hour to get in to work today, but as long as you drive with some sense, and don't have bald tires, it wasn't that bad!

February 8, 2013 / 09:23

Dwano

Hard to believe that the Ministry of Transportation is cancelling motor vehicle tests today. This would be the perfect day to test the skills of novice drivers! When I learned to drive, it was in the winter and I believe it made me a safer driver today.

I agree with Lorne. I don't mind driving in the snow, I am just wary of the other knuckledraggers behind the wheel. Also need to mention the big transports that have no fear or sense as they fly down the 401 at the speed of sound.

Andrew

I can finally see across the street here in Niagara. We had some freezing rain this morning with ice pellets that then turned to snow - I'd say we've had 10-15cm so far.

All schools in the DSBN are closed - but my son wanted to goto daycare instead of hanging out with boring old dad...

So.. I got the Die Hard blu-ray all raring to go for a little dad time!!!

Stay safe everyone and Mike, have fun tonight. Kerri's really looking forward to it they've put in a lot of time and effort to make it a great event, hopefully the weather cooperates. I just hope she makes it there!

Cheers,
Andrew

Not Not Dean

I listen to Humble and Fred's podcast and can't take it any more. The hypocrisy!

When Fred Patterson was fired by 99.9, he started a blog and had warm fuzzies for Corus. This resulted in much love for Corus stations including 640, the best talk in the city with the best personalities. Mike Stafford was the very best, of course.

Then that Corus love toned down when Humble and Fred signed a deal with Rogers.

But when the Rogers deal was replaced by the Astral deal, the new line from Freddie P was about how 1010 is the best talk in the city and the talk radio for smart people and Mike Richards et al are the best personalities in the city. Forget 640, 1010 is the best.

See, it's all about which company has Fred's favour at the time. There's no integrity or honesty at play.

Oh, and Frederick, how would you feel now about your daughter breast feeding your beloved grandson in a food court? I remember your blog rants about how breast feeding should only be done in completely privacy.

Since the weather is complete ass today, I don't dare go to timmies for a coffee I had little choice but to get a coffee and sandwich off the coffee truck. BIG MISTAKE!!! It was like I ate a week old egg/cheese sandwich and the coffee looked and tasted like sludge. NEVER AGAIN COFFEE TRUCK MAN NEVER AGAIN!

For those that care, My Bloody Valentine released their first album in EVER last week (OK, maybe more like 20 years, but whatever).
MBV have never been my cup of tea, so I find their new album to be, well, meh...
But, if you want some music to inspire you, check out The Local Natives. Beautiful music. It goes to show that there is musical life out there, besides PSY, Bieber, and Swift.

Argie

Mike,

Most woman with a brain can do it discreetly - which is fine by me. Then of course there are some women who are just militant about it. They want to make a political statement about it - not sure why.

Then of course, that would lead us to women who insist on breastfeeding their child who is about to enter kindergarten. To me that's a sign of a mental disorder.

February 8, 2013 / 10:38

Andrew

@Mike..

Hmmmm, not that I'm aware of, however, there are some things she doesn't share with me.

Yes, she will be too busy taking care of the party guests to look after me.. we're used to it.

February 8, 2013 / 11:07

Mississauga Phil

@ Argie - have to agree with you about breasfeeding any child over the age of 2...just not needed or appropriate....My son was breast fed until he could eat solid food, then he was slowly weened.

Before the Moms go crazy...I'm pretty much always on your side, Moms are the best!! But I just don't see a need for it.

I've heard the argument that it breeds intimacy, but there are other ways to get that with your child. Once a child can eat solid food (i don't mean baby food, I mean cut up the chicken and veggies you made for yourself and give some to the kid) the need for breast milk is gone. They can get the vitamins and nouishment they need through proper diet and whole milk.

One of my sons friends was breast fed too long in my opinion and is now attached to his mother at the hip, he's 5 and still needs mommy to wipe his backside, so he won't go at school...not good.

February 8, 2013 / 11:19

Mississauga Phil

That being said, any mom who wants to breastfeed their baby is entitled to do it wherever they'd like (within reason) and the rest of us should just butt out of it.

February 8, 2013 / 11:22

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I haven't been in a maternity ward in about 8.5 years, but at the time there were posters up on the walls of Women's College Hospital encouraging mothers to breastfeed for 2 years.

So let's not pick on women for doing what the Women's College Hospital posters told them to do!

My kids didn't go nearly that long, but that was their mother's call, as it should be.

And like Mississauga Phil said, if they want to breastfeed their child in public, that's their right. It certainly doesn't bother me.

February 8, 2013 / 11:25

Mississauga Phil

@ Mike - I'm fine with it for the first 2 years...it the 3-5 year olds still doing it that bugs me.

To me, at that point it's either that the mother doesn't want to stop (very selfish of them) or they don't want to go through the hassle of weening (lazy)

Not trying to be a man telling women what to do with their bodies...just a father who has an opinon

4x4 Time

I have a bit of a dilemma..On our street, most of my neighbours do not get a long with the people that live next door to us, it's a long story but it is a deserved disliking.
Mark (the husband) is overseas, and his wife (Simone) is home alone and is about 60.
My wife says I should go over and snowblow out her driveway.
I cannot stand the woman, and protest but my wife says "Grow up". What to do?
Keep my ground, or cave in and snowblow her out?

February 8, 2013 / 11:34

@4x4 Time

If she's 60 and her husband is overseas, I think you bite your lip and plow.

February 8, 2013 / 11:37

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Mississauga Phil

Those posters definitely said "up to 2 years old". I remember b/c at the time I thought that was pretty old to be breast fed.

I agree, there's a creepiness factor that sets in after the kid turns two.

February 8, 2013 / 11:38

Mississauga Phil

@ 4x4 - I used to face a similar dilema on the street i grew up on. THere was an old lady who yelled at us everytime we played hockey on the street/rode our bikes past her house/just for the hell of it. But My old man and I would still shovel her driveway any time it snowed.

My dad said that her attitude was irrellivant, that it was our resposibility as canadains to dig out those who can't do it themselves.

My question to you is if (many years from now) you pass before your wife, you'd want the men on your street to help your widow.

You'll have to hold your nose while doing it, but i think you kinda have to clear her out....

Now, hopefully she see's this and maybe changes her attitudes towards her neighbors.

February 8, 2013 / 12:54

Gary

Mike...I was surprised to see that you wrote you were underwhelmed with the snowfall. I just came in from shovelling my driveway and there is a lot of snow and it is still coming down hard.

February 8, 2013 / 13:08

CQ

@ Mississauga Phil (12:54)
There's all sorts of neighbour nuisances besides kids playing road hockey? Is it played every day while constanting yelling, cussing, and shouting?
How 'bout a person that gets pestered by all sorts of Rap, Good ol Boy, Dance, Death Metal etc. crap music everytime(!) they open their door or are even just living quietly indoors? Or maybe its a gearhead operating his power tools at all hours?
How about kids banging upon a basketball all day and every day plus having their shots miss a standalone basket pole postioned in front of one's own car?
How about mobs of youngsters around 13 still showing up at one's door on Halloween?
How about neighbours that take up the entire area for parking 3 or 4 cars - like it was their own junkyard?
How about neighbours that have a road clogging guest list every weekend?
How about cats and dogs that are poorly managed?
How about the constant smells of BBQ or pot, etc.?
How about streams of litter blowing about onto one's yard or frontage?
How about the neighbour that blocks out the sun with their own mega fence or monster scaled addition?
How about neighbours that turn their peaceful residental homes into a never-ending yard sale or any other venture?

February 8, 2013 / 13:26

@Gary

Firstly, it's science. It's not necessary for you to believe it for it to be true. We could start this world from scratch and in time the new science would be identical to the old science.

As for being underwhelmed, that was my 9am glance out the window. It's been snowing for 4.5 hours since then. But I'm still old enough to remember when a foot of snow wasn't that big a deal.

February 8, 2013 / 13:28

Dave Williams

@Phil, I cannot believe that I sort of agree with you again. I also shoveled a miserable neighbours yard several times in the past, but when given the chance she never even stated thank you, I refused to do it again.

February 8, 2013 / 13:31

@ Not Not Dean; why would Freddie bite the hand that feeds him. If you worked for Fed-Ex, would you go around blowing the horn for UPS? Grow a brain.

February 8, 2013 / 13:47

By your reasoning we shouldn't expect anything but sunshine and rainbows about the Blue Jays by any Rogers employee including the Fan 590.

February 8, 2013 / 14:03

It wouldn't feel like winter in Canada without a snow day or two.

Yes, she will be too busy taking care of the party guests to look after me.. we're used to it.

February 8, 2013 / 14:21

Dave Williams

@ Not Not Dean; what warped logic are you speaking of. The reporters on the Fan590 are paid to generate conversation about the Jays good or bad. If they went on the air stating how the Sportsnet Radio broadcast is so much superior to theirs, they would be out of work in short order. You seem very obtuse.

February 8, 2013 / 14:38

Not Not Dean

Obtuse?

Rogers owns Fan590. Rogers owns the Blue Jays. By your reasoning, biting the hand that feeds and all, Fan590 can't criticize the Blue Jays.

February 8, 2013 / 14:51

What an upset in curling. My trainer's team beat Glenn Howard last night 7 to 6. That was something, a surprise. My trainer wasn't doing well at the beginning of the week and he turned stuff around. Anyway, they're winning now as well and after this, one game left with playoffs on the weekend.

What an afternoon...Did the dig next door...About half way through, joined by 3 teenage kids, who I know to see, but not by name. We got a front door blind pull and stare from Simone, but that's fine. I joined the kids and brought the blower to 4 other houses we did, and helped push cars in the street. Anyone else following the saga of Angelina and Michele Mastrangelo, the two sisters who claimed they were insulted with taunts of "dirty Canadians", humiliated, and falsely arrested by Miami Beach Police? I thought their story stank to high heaven when I first read it, and figured they were two typical self-entitled brats who figured the law didn't apply to them. Turns out I was right. Check out the police surveillance video of these two ditch-pigs taunting the cops, dancing like idiots, and worst of all, deliberately urinating on the chairs and spreading it from chair to chair. Disgusting, and embarrassing. The term "dirty Canadians" is unfortunately applicable here.

February 9, 2013 / 10:26

@Corey. I always hold my nose when I read stories like this one, where the "victims" always claim police brutality, and I'm not a fan of the force some officers use. Maybe they were trying to get on an episode of Campus PD, and their lives would be fulfilled.

You're outing real people without their knowledge or consent.
There's a number of commenters here that have been regularly coaxing and mocking others. That includes using words like see, look, and 'eye on' when hassling a blind person, as well as sound alike fake names. Plus the pre-insult postings repeated during multiple weeks as well.
There's already been a series of similar postings throughout these Friday Open Mikes in early 2013. Toronto Mike is the person who moderates his website; you can't individually take back your own comments if asked.

Nobody was outed. Cheryl wrote herself "My trainer's team beat Glenn Howard last night 7 to 6.".

Awesome

@Mike re: podcast. I recognize almost all of those, but remind me, which one is "In Her Shoes?"

That was a really awful game. Do we have to talk about it? My Habs better win next time, believe me.

Yeah that was a painful game to watch. And I do agree it's time for Bob Cole to retire.

In Her Shoes is my lady friend's new podcast. She lets me co-host. I think you'll like it.

My dislike of the NHL will never stop me from enjoying the habs getting destroyed! Anytime they lose, it brings a smile to my face.

Anyone else think their symbol sort of resembles a toilet seat?

I'm a Bob Cole fan too.

He has a unique voice, and I really like the fact he has a personality and that he DOES make mistakes.

The turn off for me is these generic media "personalities" who all look alike and sound alike.

Yecch. Give me Bob Cole or Tom Cheek anyday!

Bob Cole is a disaster as a play by play guy.

Seriously, he needs to be carted off somewhere very far.

I agree with Mike, Bob Cole is a legend. Sports is about emotion - anticipation of the game, thrilling skills on display, tense moments with your team is holding back the opposition (or pressing for the tying goal) and many, many more (annual disappointment with the Leafs, boredom with the trap, etc.). I want a play-by-play man who can help carry that emotion and nobody does it better than Cole. Even his signature quote "everything is happening" sums up perfectly the moments of the game where it does seem that - everything is happening.
If you want perfectly called games, get a robot. I don't really care about perfection, give the 'feeling' of the game anytime.

Went to the Sportsmen show at the Ex today. Hadn't been in a few years and was disappointed at what it has shrunk down to. $50.00 for 2 with parking and went through it in 2.5 hours. The old show would last the March break and take at least 4-5 hours to go through. Suspect the economy is partly to blame, not many trailer or Power Sports displays as in past years. My Parents in the 70's carted us down to check out all the fold down trailers so we could get the best idea of what suited our family. Don't believe I saw one display for this type.

I don't listen to Bob cole. I listen to the Habs announcers on the net in real audio. It's absolutely free.

Howard won the curling again. I'm tired of him winning all the time. It would have been nice to have a change. Even if my trainer didn't make it, it would have been nice to have another team other than Howard. It's Howard year after year after year.
