Martin Streek Tribute Audio - 8 Hours from Edge 102 and David Marsden

martin streek tribute audioIn the weeks following long-time Toronto deejay Martin Streek's passing three years ago today, two significant tribute shows aired on radio stations in the GTA. First, there was David Marsden's five hour tribute to Martin Streek that aired on 94.9 The Rock and then there was a three hour tribute that aired on Edge 102.

I shared some heavy thoughts in real-time while listening to these three hours on 102.1 that conveniently failed to mention Streek was fired from Edge 102 two months before committing suicide, but it's still a fitting tribute to Martin Streek. Marsden's tribute is even better. Here's all 8 hours of tribute audio for your listening pleasure.

Sorry to hear about your loss Mike.

He took his own life & was "reborn" again. He didn't have an accident or disease, he did himself in.

Get over it.

This might be the least sensitive comment you've ever left. Congrats!

Thanks, Mike & good Luck with your proposed podcast opportunity.

I have very mixed feelings on suicide. Having said that, there is nothing gained from making light of it, like you've done Andrew.
I can't figure out why you'd post something like that?

@519 Rob

He can write shit like that b/c he feels anonymous. He'd never sign his full name to a statement like that.

As for suicide, when someone feels it's time to exit when they have so much to live for, it's often because of a disease. A disease called depression. Mental illness is no joke.

Mike not to sound insensitive but was it ever announced how Martin commited suicide?

He hanged himself.

Andrew a man is dead!!!

It is sad ,pointless and gut wrenching. How he died is of no consequence. Think before you post asinine comments

Mike, thanks for your continued remembrance of Martin.

I'm sorry but you couldn't pay me listen to an Edge 102 tribute of Martin Streek and to peddle it is distasteful.

@Jason Patterson

I get your point, and appreciate your consistent messaging, but I thought about this long and hard...

It's people who genuinely liked Martin and worked with him talking about him positively while playing music he would have liked. Yes, it's a Corus production, and there's no mention of the firing, but I don't believe it was distasteful for me to "peddle" these three hours that aired three years ago.

I enjoyed Martin's time on the Edge. His termination from the radio station and ultimate choice to end his life was tragic to all who cared about him. Andrew, you are a coward.

Martin was awesome. Miss listenning to him on the Thursday Thirty and the live to air nights.

So Mike, you thought about this "long and hard", did you?

Then you must recall how initially Edge 102 made no mention of his death. In fact, one could easily argue that it was the HUGE public outcry & media coverage that forced Edge 102's hand in this matter. My opinion is that if it hadn't become a public spectacle nothing would have been said or done.

This blog & many others were filled with claims of "I will never listen to 102.1 again". Really? The station's ratings seem to be doing just fine. Further to that, you condemned the stations actions YET repeatedly write about them in this blog. And you still listen (as you have told us all repeatedly).

You're the type of guy that would send accolades to the Conservative government for their changes to the mortgage rules ignoring they were the ones that changed them in the first place.

@Those calling Andrew a coward

Not only do I find Andrew's comments incredibly insensitive. I also find them simplistic & stupid.

BUT..the rest of you are just as hypocritical. I've seen lots of nasty anonymous comments on here directed at others. This blog mirrors what happens at SOWNY. It's a group think circle jerk of people that defend their own right to say what they want but not others.

Finally Mike, you know what I find really nauseating about you? How you are all about your own ego. This blog is filled with countless posts where you gloat about your freebies. Even the name of this blog. It's Toronto Mike..almost imply you're somehow a spokesperson for the city versus say "Mike from Toronto" an average citizen just talking about what interests him.

AND, I believe posts like this one are as much about getting hits on your blog as they are remembering Mr Streek. Isn't it you that manipulates Google so your site & posts appear at the top of the list? Seems egocentric to me.

I wish I had recording of his Sunday night live to air. I used to have some of my most creative times listening to that...

I have an hour of Martin Streek's live to air that I'll post once I get a second to dig it up and upload it.

@Irvine

I assure you, I didn't post the Streek audio for hits. I'm the guy who wrote about Streek's dismissal in the first place back in May 2009, remember? There's no fakery here.

Re: my ego... I've put ten years into this blog. Ten years of blood, sweat and even a few tears. If it gets me into the odd cocktail party or a test drive from Ford or whatever, what's the harm? I don't make a living off this blog, it's just a hobby I enjoy that gets me a perk here and there. It's hardly ego filling.

And the name Toronto Mike is just a simple and catchy handle I invented. Not for a second do I think I represent the city of Toronto. I represent myself, nothing more.

July 7, 2012 @ 2:51 PM

Irvine

@Toronto Mike

Sure Mike. And the rehashed "Toronto Mike vs Fearless Fred" thing wasn't rehashed for hits either, was it?

On the topic of Fred, it was YOU that stereotyped Fred. You never listened to him Mike. You googled him and you made your assumptions from what you found. It never once occurred to you that Fearless Fred worked in a rock station in a blue collar city. Fred was entertaining his audience & he understood what they liked. Would you be so quick to judge Jason Barr as a mullethead? After all, he works at 97,7 HTZ FM. It's a rock station comparable to the Bear & ostensibly has the same demo. The only mistake that Fearless Fred made was even acknowledging YOU exist. Fred's a talented guy that worked his way up the radio ladder to get where he is. You're well....a blogger.

AND, your comment "Ten years of blood, sweat and even a few tears" just demonstrates your arrogance. You make it sound like you completed a medical degree. I can't imagine the agony of posting stuff like "What Would Wendel Do" or "Jays Win Again" or endless photos of the Leaf games you got free tickets too & tell us all about.

Is their harm in attending free hockey games? No. But in your case it's just arrogance. As is you manipulating this blog so the subjects you talk about end up on the top of Google. You didn't GET to the top spot because of content Mike. You got there because you manipulated shit. It's the digital equivalent of payola in the music industry. I'm sure you take comfort in knowing most people don't realize it's possible to do that.

July 7, 2012 @ 3:39 PM

@Irvine

As I explained, the Fearless Fred subject resurfaced when it was mentioned on Humble and Fred's podcast and I started getting emails about it. It's not really fair when you only hear one side of the story, hence my entry.

If I wanted hits, I'd write about Lindsay Lohan, the Kardashians, the Tom Cruise ~ Katie Holmes divorce, etc. I completely avoid the popular topics because they don't interest me. I write about stuff that interests me.

As for the payola comment... ridiculous! You don't know what you're talking about.

July 7, 2012 @ 3:47 PM

Irvine

Oh, well how stupid of me. I should have assumed that everyone that reads this site listens to the H&F podcast.

And "it's not really fair when you only hear on side of the story". Really?

Of course it was entirely fair of you to make decisions on Fearless Fred's character & talent by what you read on the internet & then share this "truth" with those that read your blog. Did you ever listen to Fred on The Bear? Did you ever put what Fred did in context given the type of radio he was doing? Have you ever gone to Edmonton? (you wouldn't last 10 minutes in Mill Woods).

Re: Payola. Get real man. Links to this blog end up at the top of Google not because of content. They end up there because of technical manipulation. Is it still called Googlewashing or Google Bombing? I have more important things to do than worry if my website is number one.

If anything Mike, you OWE Fearless Fred an apology. I demand you apologize for making assumptions about him without even hearing what he did.

And to sweeten the pot if you say sorry I'll pay for your airfare & taxi fare to Clareview in Edmonton. #ETown

Hey Irvine... Jealous of Mike much? Come up with something to get your own freebies and quit your bitching you sound petty and whiny. Mike I applaud you for your blog and if you can get rewarded for it that's fantastic! Keep on doing what you do and I'll be here almost daily to read it.

Cheers Jamie from Burlington.

My God - how absolutely surreal to read comments from Irvine complaining about someone's ego. Irvine, a guy so full of himself that he can't post something without mentioning how wonderful he his.
You're pathetic dude. Really.

What a nice pic of Martin Streek. Life is short, can be very hard and is full of jerks. That's why we have to love our family and friends as fiercely as possible and try to squeeze joy from every moment that we can. If you can manage to pay your bills doing something you love that also brings happiness to others, then you are really lucky. I think Martin must have been one of those people. Some of my favourite university memories were his Sunday night live shows at Whiskey Saigon... I think he loved Depeche Mode as much I do, and just when I thought the music couldn't get any better he would play Just Can't Get Enough and I practically wanted to climb up into the booth and hug him. Hopefully he had far more joy and love in his life than the pain and sadness that must have overcame him in the end.

Played a lot of pool with Martin at the Phoenix in the 90s. He was a sweet and kind dude. I didn't know him like a friend, but from the interactions we had, he was a gentleman.

Glad to have seen a link to this posted on FB this week -- Martin was a mainstay in my life for many many many Saturday nights at the Phoenix. Grateful for the music and the memories. He is still missed by many.

I only knew Martin for a short while. I do however remember bleeding all over the leather interior of his white Mercedes, after skating down some hills in Burlington, only hours after live to air at the phoenix and the 6th bottle of win(e). He handed me some newspaper and said, no sweat bro, it's just a car. Regardless of your opinion on dependency, he was a solid human being.

I'm pretty sure he'd be stoked as fuck to know that some people are butt-hurt enough to trash him after his passing. He lived more of a life than any of you ever will. Go enjoy your own lives, fools.

I'm amped to have known him. Peace and love brother. You helped us all realize a part of ourselves we never knew before.
