Outdoor Rinks Closed for Winter in February

high park rinkMy son plays hockey at George Bell Arena, but his practices take place outdoors at High Park Rink. There are weekly practices scheduled through March.

Yesterday, I received an email from my son's coach letting me know the outdoor practices are cancelled for the rest of the season because the city has shut down the rink. The reason? Warm weather.

When was the last time outdoor rinks in Toronto were closed due to warm weather when the calendar still read February? I'll bet it's never happened.

High for today was 11.1 C in 1954. Cold as hell in Europe. Maybe we will see better European players in the next few years.

Well, the rink at Rosedale Park is closed as well. That's where my trainer takes me skating. He thinks they have a certain time of year to close the rinks. Anyway, looks like no skating for the rest of the year until winter again, but snow on the way tomorrow so not time for tennis yet either.

Hmmm, warmer this year in Toronto. Couple of Montreal bloggers I follow have complained that they've had more snow this winter, so maybe we'll see more Quebecois players in the NHL soon!

Warm this winter on the prairies as well. We had one snowstorm in November, and another just this past weekend. The most recent one is already melting.

How about 1983? I remember that year in university, I was able to ride my bicycle for most of the winter. On Valentine's Day, I rode from McMaster in Hamilton to my girlfriend's house in Burlington because it was warm enough to do that, about 15°C. The weather stayed warm right up until a few days before Reading Week, at which point we were royally dumped on with snow.
