Lana Del Rey Can Sing

Published by Toronto Mike on January 19, 2012 @ 11:09 in Music

musicI missed Lana Del Rey on Saturday Night Live last weekend, but judging from my Twitter feed she was terrible. Most people were probably hearing her name for the first time, and from what I've read she was a little nervous and had an off night. People love to hate, so the Lana Del Rey jokes started to fly.

I like Lana Del Rey, and she can sing. Trust me, she's far more talented than the usual top 40 slop folks are inundated with. Here she is performing live on German television.

I take it her SNL performance wasn't as good as that...

Good?
Well, Princess Vespa from Spaceballs: The Movie sounded better singing Swing Low, Sweet Cheery Eye in prison than this performance.

It sounded like she was popping Valium as she was singing.

I hope it was just a bad performance and she can totally redeem herself!

Cheers,
Andrew

@Andrew

Love the Princess Vespa from Spaceballs reference!

Quick Story: A couple of months ago, I scored a copy of Spaceballs and was all excited to show it to the kids for the first time. They've both seen all the Star Wars several times and I remember loving Spaceballs.

Sadly, they didn't dig Spaceballs the way I did. I ended up watching it alone. :(

As for this Lana Del Rey tune, I still dig it. Am I the only one?

The lady has pipes and can sing a great tune. I think her style is what throws people off. I see her as a cross between Hope Sandoval and Poe with a little lady gag gag (from her "born to die" video.

It seemed to me that she had a less than geat night on SNL, but it was still a good performance. Better than I could do!

I see the "Pic every day" lasted a long time...
Another reason to believe everything you say.

Spaceballs is a classic!
Not his best, but still a great parody.

Hat tip for H&F for introducing me to Lana Del Ray when Ivar Hamilton was on the podcast a while back.

Having said that, I don't like her. Video Games is alright but other than that she's very meh.
