Kids Like Shite and That's Okay

musicMy buddy Pete was tweeting tonight about an 8-year old he caught singing "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5.

I asked Pete what bugged him so much about what he witnessed, and he said it was that she was singing a shite song. I agree with Pete, Moves Like Jagger is a shite song, in fact, it's one of the worst songs I heard in 2011, but Pete and I aren't 8-years old. I remember being 8-years old, and I have both a 9-year old and a 7-year old, so I can state with some authority that kids like shite.

At that age, I was really into Duran Duran. Top 40 pop was my genre of choice. It was mostly crap, but I outgrew it. A few years later I discovered the Sex Pistols and the rest is history.

My kids seem to like Katy Perry and Usher and even the horrible Black Eyed Peas but they're kids, and kids like shite. This too shall pass.

What shite did you enjoy when you were a kid?

Oh, probably all that horrid 70s stuff -- you know, disco and soft rock.

Actually, I am pleased to say my 12 year old has graduated from hip-hop to CLASSIC ROCK!!!! The boy had his warts, but he's learned well... :)

When I was 8, I listened to anything my big sister would play - Wham, Culture Club, Stevie Wonder, Police & Duran Duran. The only artist I liked that she didn't was Michael Jackson. Then I turned 10 and discovered hard rock!
My pre-teen nephews like (shock!) Justin Bieber!!

Mike, I agree with you 100%.

My little guy (who is 6) loves that song. I can't stand it, but hey...thats me.

I am just glad that he loves music. I am sure one day, when he is 10, 11, 12 or so, he'll all of a sudden discover something musically that blows his mind.

By the way, my son also knows most of the words to a Fleet Foxes song, and he also likes a couple of Rheostatics songs, so, it isn't all doom and gloom.
