It's Not The Heat, It's The Stupidity

sunAn Associated Press article got my attention with the headline "Northeast braces for temps near boiling point".

stupidity

That's pretty scary stuff. The boiling point, of course, would be 100°C or 212°F. What exactly are these temps near 100°C or 212°F?

Boston's 99 degrees on Friday could feel like 105 degrees; Philadelphia's 102 degrees like 114 degrees and Washington, D.C.'s 103 degrees may seem the same as a melting 116 degrees.

Really, Associated Press? Aren't you still trying to pass as a legitimate news service? Has it come to this?

It's not the heat, it's the stupidity.

For purists, the normal boiling point of water is 99.97 degrees Celsius at a pressure of 1 atm (i.e., 101.325 kPa). Until 1982 this was also the standard boiling point of water, but the IUPAC now recommends a standard pressure of 1 bar (100 kPa). At this slightly reduced pressure, the standard boiling point of water is 99.61 degrees Celsius.

But what is the boiling point of BLOOD?!! Oh wait, I googled it. Pretty much the same as water. OK yep this reporter is an idiot.

I think the reporter was using boiling point as a metaphor, you know, to sensationalize,(think FOX) remember they use Fahrenheit down there.

Kind of like official temps vs the humidex. It just "feels like" the boiling point. :)
