Help Me Rename Victoria Day

Published by Toronto Mike on May 23, 2011 @ 09:24 in My 2 Cents

Victoria DayHere in Canada, today is Victoria Day. This holiday is in celebration of Queen Victoria's Birthday.

Hold on just a moment. We get a holiday devoted to some Queen of Britain who's been dead for over a hundred years? Surely we can do better than that. Where is our Canadian pride?

I suggest we re-brand today's holiday Terry Fox day, or Wayne Gretzky day or John Candy day or even Steve Nash Day.

Leave your suggestions in the comments. What Canadian deserves this day more than Queen Victoria?

Lionel Conacher, Pat Verbeek, and Tommy Chong (born in Edmonton apparently) have birthdays on the 24th.

I vote Chong.

I second Tommy Chong Day.

Dave's not here, man.

@Pat

Argie Day.... God help us all.

I was going to suggest Toronto Mike Day, just to piss off the rest of Canada... especially Irvine.

Who would argue with any of the following:

~ Pat Burns Day
~ Leslie Neilsen Day
~ Margaret Atwood Day
~ Norman Bethune Day

Argie already thinks EVERY day is Argie Day.

How about Beer Day. Simple, essentially the first party holiday of the summer.

Toronto Maple Leaf Day... this always being the latest possible day of the NHL calender year the the Blue and White could play in a game since '67.

Wow, I'm honored but really it should be re-named Tommy Douglas Day. That way it can truly reflect the nation we currently have: A NATION OF CRAZY SOCIALISTS.

@Toronto Mike
Don;t you want to keep any of Canada's History?
I suggest you do some research on Queen Victoria and Prince Albert before you want to erase her from the Canada.

How about George Smitherman Day. That sounds good or how about Guy Lafleur Day.

How about just a simple name: May Day!

Margaret Atwood Day? NO WAY. I'm fine with having Canada's historic ties continue. I'll be fine if is updated as Prince William day, too.

Keep it. Named in honor of Victoria, and is now the official birthday of the Monarch. Figurehead or no, I like the tradition of the Monarchy.

I too like Victoria Day. Why don't we rename Family Day instead? Or the August long weekend, which I think every city names differently.

I agree with Ajax and J9. Keep it the same and rename Family Day.

Toronto Maple Leaf day? Bwaaa Haaa Haaa Haaaa

I'll pile on with Ajax Mike, J9 and Boomer. There's nothing wrong with Victoria Day. Family Day is a joke.

Also, who could argue with "Leslie Neilsen Day", ah, I for one. What has he done for Canada? Sure he's a decent actor and a funny guy, but not funny enough to give a National Holiday to.

I have to agree with Freddie on this. Rename it 'Stephen Harper Day', who will be known as one of the greatest Prime Ministers in Canadian history.

Victoria was only the famine queen, presiding over the entire British Empire as the population of its neighbour was cut by half with half of the population drop due to death and the other from emigration.

If you're celebrating queen Vic, then you may as well have Pol Pot day, or Oliver Cromwell day.

Hows about Republic Day? We'll have to toss the monarchs first.

Keep it as Victoria Day. As a kid I called it firecracker day. Sure, there are fireworks on Canada Day/Dominion Day but it is just not the same.

@Duce,I think you mean the largest cabinet in Canadian history?
Just like a dictator. Surrounding himself with as many pawns as he can and costing us 9 million extra a year to do so. Yea, great Prime Minister....NOT!

Wayne Gretzky or Rick Hansen day

On second though, Leslie Neilsen Day. Cause he was the man!
