Least Inspiring Toronto Mayoral Race Ever

Published by Toronto Mike on August 6, 2010 @ 13:18 in Rob Ford Watch, Toronto News ~ Toronto Focus

City HallI don't know if it's because we're in the middle of a very busy, hot summer, but from where I'm sitting this is the least inspiring Toronto mayoral race I can remember.

The simple fact this is the first I've written about this election to choose Toronto's new mayor since Rob Ford announced his candidacy tells you a great deal. That was March 16th. Since then, I haven't been motivated to write a single word about an election taking place October 25, 2010, except to chew Rocco Rossi out for his Sympatico spam.

Last I checked there were 34 candidates. They are:

  • Achampong, Rocco
  • Andrews, Don
  • Babula, George
  • Ball, Christopher
  • Barton, Andrew
  • Campbell, Douglas
  • Castillo, Jaime
  • Clarke, Kevin
  • Cole, Keith
  • Cottle, Charlene
  • Firth, Selwyn
  • Flie, Michael
  • Ford, Rob
  • Ghazi, Abdullah-Baquie
  • Gomberg, Howard
  • Hossain, Monowar
  • Lee, Dewitt
  • Letonja, John
  • Macklin, Carmen
  • Magee, Colin
  • McMillan, Jim
  • Pampena, Joseph
  • Pantalone, Joe
  • Rossi, Rocco
  • Smitherman, George
  • State, Mark
  • Steinberger, Tibor
  • Syed, Himy
  • Taylor, Phil
  • Thomson, Sarah
  • Vallance, David
  • Wadhwa, Ratan
  • Walker, Daniel
  • Yeung, Sonny

In reality, our next mayor will be one of the following: Rob Ford, Joe Pantalone, Rocco Rossi, George Smitherman or Sarah Thomson. You already know what I think about Rob Ford, but none of the other four leading candidates inspire me, either. If George Smitherman wins, it's not because he ran a stellar campaign. It's because he was the best of a bad lot.

Who would you vote for in this 2010 Toronto mayoral race?

No one will care until after Labour Day.

Okay. Beat me up if you want, but I'll say this. I'm voting for George Smitherman. My personal trainer is voting for him as well. He was his landlord a while back, and I even met him. He's very nice, and he is going to get my vote. Plain and simple.

Good rationale.

But, I think the question you all need to ask yourselves is, "Who's better than Bad Boy?!"

...?

If Smitherman wins, I will move out of Toronto. He spent over a billion dollars on e-health and it still isn't close to being ready. How can you vote for him Cheryl?? Typical Toronto stupidity.

People make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. I'm not the only one voting for him. My personal trainer will be as well. You just haven't met him. I have, and he's very nice. Believe me.

Sarah Thompson is the visionary. Her plan for transit is stunning. Her subway plan is very ambitious and just what we need because the existing network is too crowded and limited in scope. We can't just focus on tram lines in the suburbs. They're needed but so are new subway lines.

Sarah Thompson has proposed policies for architecture and urban design which would improve the situation in the city in this regard.

We need bold leaders who are ambitious and passionate about the development of the city. Rob Ford and Rocco Rossi have not exhibited much passion, ambition and knowledge in terms of city-building. George Smitherman has exhibited some passion, but little knowledge or ambition.

Hello,
I'm Dewitt Lee, a Mayor Candidate for the City of Toronto and I just wanted to share a thought with you all. I believe now is the time Toronto really steps up to fulfill it's full potential and I believe that's done as a city and a people. We will not be a successful city if we have unsuccessful people living in it. I want to help get those dreamers into store fronts, I want to help those artists get on to T.V. Building cities is done by building people and that's what my campaign focuses on.

please visit my website at www.abettertoronto.ca to learn more about me and Team Toronto.

Have a great day and May God keep our land glorious and free!
