Ian Curtin killed himself 30 years ago yesterday. He was Joy Division's songwriter and lyricist and he took his life on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour.

A few Joy Division tunes seem to always make my playlists. "Atmosphere" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" are great, but I like to start with "Transmission".

30 years, huh? Damn I'm old. There are 2 excellent films on the subject that have come out in the last couple of years: A doc called "Joy Division" and "Control" - directed by Anton Corbijn. The guy who plays Curtis is brilliant. The rest of the 'band' all insisted on learning to play the instruments - and then the songs - so it was as authentic as possible. Find some footage of Curtis on stage and you can't help but figure Gord Downie took something from him.
