That Horrible, Horrible Auto-Tune

Published by Toronto Mike on February 1, 2010 @ 20:30 in Music

grammyLike a sucker, I watched the Grammy Awards last night. I PVR'd the show and started it about 45 minutes in, so I could skip the commercials. I never like the Grammies, but I always feel compelled to watch them for some reason.

The music was once again mediocre. Actually, this year I felt the music was worse than usual, and that's saying something. As bad as the bulk of the performances were, nothing was as horrible as the performance by Jamie Foxx and T-Pain. The song, entitled "Blame It", was just about the most awful thing my ears have ever had the displeasure of hearing, and I like rap.

What did you think? I couldn't believe how bad it was (Slash's solo excepted - Slash performing the solo from November Rain almost saved this steaming pile of shite) and my second time through it, it's even worse than I remembered. I blame Auto-Tune.

Auto-Tune is horrible. It should be reserved for the news. I blame Cher for starting the Auto-Tune fad, and it's gotten completely out of control. Jamie Foxx and T-Pain (if that's his real name - I suspect it's not) should be ashamed. Auto-Tune isn't just cheating, it's killing popular music.

Death to Auto-Tune.

No wonder the kids are down loading this Shite for free, who would want to admit to paying for it.

The whole hiphop gangsta rap genre I keep hoping will die a quick and violent death. All sounds the same, unintelligible lyrics, same contrived computer generated beat. Only liked the early performers like Run DMC, MC Hammer, and Young MC.

Im glad im not the only one who felt like this, I wrote about it being bad and I only had to look at the winners and performances, nothing good all high profile money earners but not the most talented or best musicians.

What is auto-tune?

Jamie Foxx should pick one...actor or singer not both

I was suprised that kings of Leon won

You know Auto-tune when you hear it.

From Wikipedia:

Auto-Tune is a proprietary audio processor created by Antares Audio Technologies. Auto-Tune uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. It is used to disguise off-key inaccuracies and mistakes, and has allowed singers to perform perfectly tuned vocal tracks without the need of singing in tune. While its main purpose is to slightly bend sung pitches to the nearest true semitone (to the exact pitch of the nearest tone in traditional equal temperament), Auto-Tune can be used as an effect to distort the human voice when pitch is raised or lowered significantly.

Christ. I could barely watch 30 seconds of that clip you posted Mike. With or without auto tune.

You certainly seem to have an appreciation of most forms of music including rap. That's admirable. I on the other hand cannot tolerate it. I'm a bit of a music snob i suppose. Not to the point where i won't listen to anything but indie rock (i know people who are like that), but rap, country, top 40 and screaming "alt-rock" make me want to stab myself in the eye.

I don't watch the Grammy's, and for the 20 seconds i did watch when flipping by, it was just a bunch of bullshit. The fake audience jumping up in the front made it look like the whole place was going nuts..then you cut to the main audience who are sorta just sitting there (feeling elitist to the fake audience i might add).

Since comments here aren't linked w/ Facebook:

Blame it on the a-a-a-a-a-auto-tune.

They provided no reason to watch this year. The performers were re-runs of previous years, and the performances are the only reason to watch. I already knew in advance King of Leon would get their Grammy. Again, there was no other reason to watch.

On a sidenote, there isn't actually such a thing as "someone who will only listen to indie rock". Over half those "indie" bands are signed, Ryan.
