My Daughter's Learn To Play Hockey Progress

Published by Toronto Mike on February 20, 2010 @ 14:56 in Family

familyBack in November, my daughter didn't know how to skate let alone play hockey. When she hit the ice, she'd attempt to stay on her feet by taking little steps. That's not skating, that's walking on ice.

We enrolled in the Swansea Hockey Association's Learn To Play Hockey program. I say "we" because a parent can accompany the child on the ice in this program. This was my third year in a row skating at Rennie Park each Saturday morning, having participated in the program the last two years with my son who has since graduated to House League.

For one hour every Saturday, my daughter not only worked on her skating, but learnt the fundamentals of hockey; everything from receiving a pass and skating backwards, to stick handling and crossovers. Three months in and the improvement is extraordinary. Here's video of her skating this morning in warmups.

I absolutely love this rink at Rennie Park, home to the largest outdoor hockey league in the world. The only downside to playing outdoors is that the seasons are a little shorter, so my son's team played their final regular season game today and my daughter and I only have one more week of Learn To Play Hockey.

I hate to see these Learn To Play Hockey seasons end because nothing's better than skating alongside your child while he or she learns this fabulous sport. Luckily, I get one more year of this before being permanently relegated to the sidelines.

How awesome is that Mike, thanks for posting it. I bet you're a proud papa...now if only Brian Burke can sign her to play along side Phil Kessel...then we'd be onto something!

Cheers/David

Classic Argie!

Dare I say, vintage?

I'm not biting. It's a trap!

Argie, don't take this the wrong way, but what on earth is wrong with you?

on second thought, you can take that the wrong way.

argie is a caveman

he believes girls belong in the kitchen - barefoot and pregnant

he's as relevant as typewriters and phonebooks

Argie - seriously? SERIOUSLY!? Wow, good thing I don't know you in real life... I may have to smack you upside the head for that comment.

I'm surprised the rock Argie lives under has the internet.

If men can figure skate then what's wrong with women playing hockey?

No problem with either.

Women can be just as incompetenat as men in what ever they choose to do.

Argie as Jed Clampet use to say "one day I need to have a long talk with that boy".

Ah, the tolerant south of Bloor, CBC radio listening crowd shows their stripes once again. I make am unpopular statement and several of you want to physically harm me. Wow, you people are an odd lot. Andy Barrie would not be proud.

And also, I beg to CTV please do not inflick anymore women`s hockey on our airwaves.

I wish Argie wouldn't "inflick" his prehistoric views on us.

Or at least have the decency to explain them.

Every good blog has its troll. And me without my shotgun.

Wow. Apparently "several" means "one" in Argie's world. And are you really so sensitive that a smack upside the head would "physically harm" you?

So, what else shouldn't girls do I wonder?

I'm sure "Archaic Argie" subscribes to all these notions as well......
Women shouldn't drive
women shouldn't vote
women shouldn't drink beer
women shouldn't wear pants
women shouldn't be police officers
women shouldn't have any position of power
women shouldn't go to war
women shouldn't discuss politics
women shouldn't initiate sex
women shouldn't be funny
women shouldn't lift weights

One little typo and people are distracted by the point that girls should not play hockey. Soccer is OK but hockey, really? Hockey is too rough for most of the supposed males who have attacked me, albeit behind a computer.

Wow, and more physical threats. People are really passionate about forcing women's hockey on everyone. Please dont bother posting about how you're going to beat me up if you're not wiling to back it up. Not only is it wimpy to do so its also against the law.

Uhm... who's forcing Women's hockey on anyone? It's called equal access. If women want to play hockey, they can. If we want to watch, we can. Those who aren't interested don't need to play, don't need to watch.

You say hockey is too rough for women. What makes you say that? If a woman has the skill to compete on the ice, what right does anyone have to deny her that, if she wants to?

Actually, they have none. Not only would it be misogynistic to do so, it'd be against the law.

I’m in favour of girls playing hockey in all girl leagues but my support does not extend to co-ed hockey leagues. Boys are bigger and often rougher than most girls. If I had a daughter I wouldn’t stop her from playing if that’s what she wanted to do. But then I can’t say I’d like it either. I couldn’t see her going through the same injuries that I had to endure

Memo to all the women: If you think men are attracted to women hockey players - think again! It just aint sexy.

Mind you the American side had a few hot women, unlike our Cdn squad. Speaking of which has anyone seen the Cdn women's coach? She looks like a manlier version of Mike Babcock.

Ahhh, so Women shouldn't play hockey because men might find them unattractive? Wait, wait, let me extrapolate that one more step. Women shouldn't play hockey because men might be intimidated by a female athlete.

You know, in previous comments I've expressed admiration for Argie because while I've rarely agreed with him, at least he's presented his opinions intelligently and without being insulting. I take it back. Argie, you're a neanderthal.

Men do like women acting tough and playing rough sports, in fact we hate it. Have you seen the women's so called professional players? Not one of them resembles a women, they are all carbon copies of Hailey Wickenhauser, "butch" and butt ugly. Stop trying to act tough, we don't like it and it turns us right off!
